Open Set Recognition with Conditional Probabilistic Generative Models

Deep neural networks have made breakthroughs in a wide range of visual understanding tasks. A typical challenge that hinders their real-world applications is that unknown samples may be fed into the system during the testing phase, but traditional deep neural networks will wrongly recognize these unknown samples as one of the known classes. Open set recognition (OSR) is a potential solution to overcome this problem, where the open set classifier should have the flexibility to reject unknown samples and meanwhile maintain high classification accuracy in known classes. Probabilistic generative models, such as Variational Autoencoders (VAE) and Adversarial Autoencoders (AAE), are popular methods to detect unknowns, but they cannot provide discriminative representations for known classification. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, called Conditional Probabilistic Generative Models (CPGM), for open set recognition. The core insight of our work is to add discriminative information into the probabilistic generative models, such that the proposed models can not only detect unknown samples but also classify known classes by forcing different latent features to approximate conditional Gaussian distributions. We discuss many model variants and provide comprehensive experiments to study their characteristics. Experiment results on multiple benchmark datasets reveal that the proposed method significantly outperforms the baselines and achieves new state-of-the-art performance.

A simple artificial damping method for total Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics

In this paper, we present a simple artificial damping method to enhance the robustness of total Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (TL-SPH). Specifically, an artificial damping stress based on the Kelvin-Voigt type damper with a scaling factor imitating a von Neumann-Richtmyer type artificial viscosity is introduced in the constitutive equation to alleviate the spurious oscillation in the vicinity of the sharp spatial gradients. After validating the robustness and accuracy of the present method with a set of benchmark tests with very challenging cases, we demonstrate its potentials in the field of bio-mechanics by simulating the deformation of complex stent structures.

Nanoscale magnetization and current imaging using scanning-probe magneto-thermal microscopy

Magnetic microscopy that combines nanoscale spatial resolution with picosecond scale temporal resolution uniquely enables direct observation of the spatiotemporal magnetic phenomena that are relevant to future high-speed, high-density magnetic storage and logic technologies. Magnetic microscopes that combine these metrics has been limited to facility-level instruments. To address this gap in lab-accessible spatiotemporal imaging, we develop a time-resolved near-field magnetic microscope based on magneto-thermal interactions. We demonstrate both magnetization and current density imaging modalities, each with spatial resolution that far surpasses the optical diffraction limit. In addition, we study the near-field and time-resolved characteristics of our signal and find that our instrument possesses a spatial resolution on the scale of 100 nm and a temporal resolution below 100 ps. Our results demonstrate an accessible and comparatively low-cost approach to nanoscale spatiotemporal magnetic microscopy in a table-top form to aid the science and technology of dynamic magnetic devices with complex spin textures.

Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution over 511 km Optical Fiber Linking two Distant Metropolitans

The basic principle of quantum mechanics guarantee the unconditional security of quantum key distribution (QKD) at the cost of inability of amplification of quantum state. As a result, despite remarkable progress in worldwide metropolitan QKD networks over the past decades, long haul fiber QKD network without trustful relay has not been achieved yet. Here, through sending-or-not-sending (SNS) protocol, we complete a twin field QKD (TF-QKD) and distribute secure keys without any trusted repeater over a 511 km long haul fiber trunk linking two distant metropolitans. Our secure key rate is around 3 orders of magnitudes greater than what is expected if the previous QKD field test system over the same length were applied. The efficient quantum-state transmission and stable single-photon interference over such a long distance deployed fiber paves the way to large-scale fiber quantum networks.

Feynman Integrals and Scattering Amplitudes from Wilson Loops

We study Feynman integrals and scattering amplitudes in ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills by exploiting the duality with null polygonal Wilson loops. Certain Feynman integrals, including one-loop and two-loop chiral pentagons, are given by Feynman diagrams of a supersymmetric Wilson loop, where one can perform loop integrations and be left with simple integrals along edges. As the main application, we compute analytically for the first time, the symbol of the generic ($n\geq 12$) double pentagon, which gives two-loop MHV amplitudes and components of NMHV amplitudes to all multiplicities. We represent the double pentagon as a two-fold $\mathrm{d} \log$ integral of a one-loop hexagon, and the non-trivial part of the integration lies at rationalizing square roots contained in the latter. We obtain a remarkably compact "algebraic words" which contain $6$ algebraic letters for each of the $16$ square roots, and they all nicely cancel in combinations for MHV amplitudes and NMHV components which are free of square roots. In addition to $96$ algebraic letters, the alphabet consists of $152$ dual conformal invariant combinations of rational letters.

Low-cost and high-performance data augmentation for deep-learning-based skin lesion classification

Although deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have achieved significant accuracy in skin lesion classification comparable or even superior to those of dermatologists, practical implementation of these models for skin cancer screening in low resource settings is hindered by their limitations in computational cost and training dataset. To overcome these limitations, we propose a low-cost and high-performance data augmentation strategy that includes two consecutive stages of augmentation search and network search. At the augmentation search stage, the augmentation strategy is optimized in the search space of Low-Cost-Augment (LCA) under the criteria of balanced accuracy (BACC) with 5-fold cross validation. At the network search stage, the DCNNs are fine-tuned with the full training set in order to select the model with the highest BACC. The efficiency of the proposed data augmentation strategy is verified on the HAM10000 dataset using EfficientNets as a baseline. With the proposed strategy, we are able to reduce the search space to 60 and achieve a high BACC of 0.853 by using a single DCNN model without external database, suitable to be implemented in mobile devices for DCNN-based skin lesion detection in low resource settings.

Infections Forecasting and Intervention Effect Evaluation for COVID-19 via a Data-Driven Markov Process and Heterogeneous Simulation

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused tremendous amount of deaths and a devastating impact on the economic development all over the world. Thus, it is paramount to control its further transmission, for which purpose it is necessary to find the mechanism of its transmission process and evaluate the effect of different control strategies. To deal with these issues, we describe the transmission of COVID-19 as an explosive Markov process with four parameters. The state transitions of the proposed Markov process can clearly disclose the terrible explosion and complex heterogeneity of COVID-19. Based on this, we further propose a simulation approach with heterogeneous infections. Experimentations show that our approach can closely track the real transmission process of COVID-19, disclose its transmission mechanism, and forecast the transmission under different non-drug intervention strategies. More importantly, our approach can helpfully develop effective strategies for controlling COVID-19 and appropriately compare their control effect in different countries/cities.

Compositional Prototype Network with Multi-view Comparision for Few-Shot Point Cloud Semantic Segmentation

Point cloud segmentation is a fundamental visual understanding task in 3D vision. A fully supervised point cloud segmentation network often requires a large amount of data with point-wise annotations, which is expensive to obtain. In this work, we present the Compositional Prototype Network that can undertake point cloud segmentation with only a few labeled training data. Inspired by the few-shot learning literature in images, our network directly transfers label information from the limited training data to unlabeled test data for prediction. The network decomposes the representations of complex point cloud data into a set of local regional representations and utilizes them to calculate the compositional prototypes of a visual concept. Our network includes a key Multi-View Comparison Component that exploits the redundant views of the support set. To evaluate the proposed method, we create a new segmentation benchmark dataset, ScanNet-$6^i$, which is built upon ScanNet dataset. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms baselines with a significant advantage. Moreover, when we use our network to handle the long-tail problem in a fully supervised point cloud segmentation dataset, it can also effectively boost the performance of the few-shot classes.

Generative Adversarial Networks with Physical Evaluators for Spray Simulation of Pintle Injector

Due to the adjustable geometry, pintle injectors are specially suitable for the liquid rocket engines which require a widely throttleable range. While applying the conventional computational fluid dynamics approaches to simulate the complex spray phenomena in the whole range still remains to be a great challenge. In this paper, a novel deep learning approach used to simulate instantaneous spray fields under continuous operating conditions is explored. Based on one specific type of neural networks and the idea of physics constraint, a Generative Adversarial Networks with Physics Evaluators (GAN-PE) framework is proposed. The geometry design and mass flux information are embedded as the inputs. After the adversarial training between the generator and discriminator, the generated field solutions are fed into the two physics evaluators. In this framework, mass conversation evaluator is designed to improve the training robustness and convergence. And the spray angle evaluator, which is composed of a down-sampling CNN and theoretical model, guides the networks generating the spray solutions more according with the injection conditions. The characterization of the simulated spray, including the spray morphology, droplet distribution and spray angle, is well predicted. The work suggests a great potential of the prior physics knowledge employment in the simulation of instantaneous flow fields.

Differentially Private ADMM for Distributed Medical Machine Learning

Due to massive amounts of data distributed across multiple locations, distributed machine learning has attracted a lot of research interests. Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is a powerful method of designing distributed machine learning algorithm, whereby each agent computes over local datasets and exchanges computation results with its neighbor agents in an iterative procedure. There exists significant privacy leakage during this iterative process if the local data is sensitive. In this paper, we propose a differentially private ADMM algorithm (P-ADMM) to provide dynamic zero-concentrated differential privacy (dynamic zCDP), by inserting Gaussian noise with linearly decaying variance. We prove that P-ADMM has the same convergence rate compared to the non-private counterpart, i.e., $\mathcal{O}(1/K)$ with $K$ being the number of iterations and linear convergence for general convex and strongly convex problems while providing differentially private guarantee. Moreover, through our experiments performed on real-world datasets, we empirically show that P-ADMM has the best-known performance among the existing differentially private ADMM based algorithms.

An efficient fully Lagrangian solver for modeling wave interaction with oscillating wave energy converter

In this paper, we present an efficient, accurate and fully Lagrangian numerical solver for modeling wave interaction with oscillating wave energy converter (OWSC). The key idea is to couple SPHinXsys, an open-source multi-physics library in unified smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) framework, with Simbody which presents an object-oriented Application Programming Interface (API) for multi-body dynamics. More precisely, the wave dynamics and its interaction with OWSC is resolved by Riemann-based weakly-compressible SPH method using SPHinXsys, and the solid-body kinematics is computed by Simbody library. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed solver can accurately predict the wave elevations, flap rotation and wave loading on the flap in comparison with laboratory experiment. In particularly, the new solver shows optimized computational performance through CPU cost analysis and comparison with commercial software package ANSYS FLUENT and other SPH-based solvers in literature. Furthermore, a linear damper is applied for imitating the power take-off (PTO) system to study its effects on the hydrodynamics properties of OWSC and efficiency of energy harvesting. In addition, the present solver is used to model extreme wave condition using the focused wave approach to investigate the extreme loads and motions of OWSC under such extreme wave conditions. It worth noting that though the model validation used herein is a bottom hinged oscillating Wave Energy Converter (WEC), the obtained numerical results show promising potential of the proposed solver to future applications in the design of high-performance WECs.

Stringy canonical forms and binary geometries from associahedra, cyclohedra and generalized permutohedra

Stringy canonical forms are a class of integrals that provide $α'$-deformations of the canonical form of any polytopes. For generalized associahedra of finite-type cluster algebra, there exist completely rigid stringy integrals, whose configuration spaces are the so-called binary geometries, and for classical types are associated with (generalized) scattering of particles and strings. In this paper we propose a large class of rigid stringy canonical forms for another class of polytopes, generalized permutohedra, which also include associahedra and cyclohedra as special cases (type $A_n$ and $B_n$ generalized associahedra). Remarkably, we find that the configuration spaces of such integrals are also binary geometries, which were suspected to exist for generalized associahedra only. For any generalized permutohedron that can be written as Minkowski sum of coordinate simplices, we show that its rigid stringy integral factorizes into products of lower integrals for massless poles at finite $α'$, and the configuration space is binary although the $u$ equations take a more general form than those "perfect" ones for cluster cases. Moreover, we provide an infinite class of examples obtained by degenerations of type $A_n$ and $B_n$ integrals, which have perfect $u$ equations as well. Our results provide yet another family of generalizations of the usual string integral and moduli space, whose physical interpretations remain to be explored.

Manual-Label Free 3D Detection via An Open-Source Simulator

LiDAR based 3D object detectors typically need a large amount of detailed-labeled point cloud data for training, but these detailed labels are commonly expensive to acquire. In this paper, we propose a manual-label free 3D detection algorithm that leverages the CARLA simulator to generate a large amount of self-labeled training samples and introduces a novel Domain Adaptive VoxelNet (DA-VoxelNet) that can cross the distribution gap from the synthetic data to the real scenario. The self-labeled training samples are generated by a set of high quality 3D models embedded in a CARLA simulator and a proposed LiDAR-guided sampling algorithm. Then a DA-VoxelNet that integrates both a sample-level DA module and an anchor-level DA module is proposed to enable the detector trained by the synthetic data to adapt to real scenario. Experimental results show that the proposed unsupervised DA 3D detector on KITTI evaluation set can achieve 76.66% and 56.64% mAP on BEV mode and 3D mode respectively. The results reveal a promising perspective of training a LIDAR-based 3D detector without any hand-tagged label.

Learning Disentangled Representations of Video with Missing Data

Missing data poses significant challenges while learning representations of video sequences. We present Disentangled Imputed Video autoEncoder (DIVE), a deep generative model that imputes and predicts future video frames in the presence of missing data. Specifically, DIVE introduces a missingness latent variable, disentangles the hidden video representations into static and dynamic appearance, pose, and missingness factors for each object. DIVE imputes each object's trajectory where data is missing. On a moving MNIST dataset with various missing scenarios, DIVE outperforms the state of the art baselines by a substantial margin. We also present comparisons for real-world MOTSChallenge pedestrian dataset, which demonstrates the practical value of our method in a more realistic setting. Our code and data can be found at https://github.com/Rose-STL-Lab/DIVE.

Geometric All-Way Boolean Tensor Decomposition

Boolean tensor has been broadly utilized in representing high dimensional logical data collected on spatial, temporal and/or other relational domains. Boolean Tensor Decomposition (BTD) factorizes a binary tensor into the Boolean sum of multiple rank-1 tensors, which is an NP-hard problem. Existing BTD methods have been limited by their high computational cost, in applications to large scale or higher order tensors. In this work, we presented a computationally efficient BTD algorithm, namely \textit{Geometric Expansion for all-order Tensor Factorization} (GETF), that sequentially identifies the rank-1 basis components for a tensor from a geometric perspective. We conducted rigorous theoretical analysis on the validity as well as algorithemic efficiency of GETF in decomposing all-order tensor. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world data demonstrated that GETF has significantly improved performance in reconstruction accuracy, extraction of latent structures and it is an order of magnitude faster than other state-of-the-art methods.

SPHinXsys: an open-source multi-physics and multi-resolution library based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics

In this paper, we present an open-source multi-resolution and multi-physics library: SPHinXsys (pronunciation: s'finksis) which is an acronym for \underline{S}moothed \underline{P}article \underline{H}ydrodynamics (SPH) for \underline{in}dustrial comple\underline{X} \underline{sys}tems. As an open-source library, SPHinXsys is developed and released under the terms of Apache License (2.0). Along with the source code, a complete documentation is also distributed to make the compilation and execution easy. SPHinXsys aims at modeling coupled multi-physics industrial dynamic systems including fluids, solids, multi-body dynamics and beyond, in a multi-resolution unified SPH framework. As an SPH solver, SPHinXsys has many advantages namely, (1) the generic design provides a C++ API showing a very good flexibility when building domain-specific applications, (2) numerous industrial or scientific applications can be coupled within the same framework and (3) with the open-source philosophy, the community of users can collaborate and improve the library. SPHinXsys presently (v0.2.0) includes validations and applications in the fields of fluid dynamics, solid dynamics, thermal and mass diffusion, reaction-diffusion, electromechanics and fluid-structure interactions (FSI).

Long-range multi-body interactions and three-body anti-blockade in a trapped Rydberg ion chain

Trapped Rydberg ions represent a flexible platform for quantum simulation and information processing which combines a high degree of control over electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. The possibility to individually excite ions to high-lying Rydberg levels provides a system where strong and long-range interactions between pairs of excited ions can be engineered and tuned via external laser fields. We show that the coupling between Rydberg pair interactions and collective motional modes gives rise to effective long-range multi-body interactions, consisting of two, three, and four-body terms. Their shape, strength, and range can be controlled via the ion trap parameters and strongly depends on both the equilibrium configuration and vibrational modes of the ion crystal. By focusing on an experimentally feasible quasi one-dimensional setup of $ {}^{88}\mathrm{Sr}^+ $ Rydberg ions, we demonstrate that multi-body interactions are enhanced by the emergence of a soft mode associated, e.g., with a structural phase transition. This has a striking impact on many-body electronic states and results, for example, in a three-body anti-blockade effect. Our study shows that trapped Rydberg ions offer new opportunities to study exotic many-body quantum dynamics driven by enhanced multi-body interactions.

Integrated Cooling (i-Cool) Textile of Heat Conduction and Sweat Transportation for Personal Perspiration Management

Perspiration evaporation plays an indispensable role in human body heat dissipation. However, conventional textiles show limited perspiration management capability in moderate/profuse perspiration scenarios, i.e. low evaporation ability, ineffective evaporative cooling effect, and resultant human body dehydration and electrolyte disorder. Here, we propose a novel concept of integrated cooling (i-Cool) textile of heat conduction and sweat transportation for personal perspiration management based on unique functional structure design. By integrating heat conductive pathways and water transport channels decently, this textile not only shows the capability of liquid water wicking, but also exhibits superior evaporation rate than traditional textiles. Furthermore, compared with cotton, about 2.8 $^\circ$C cooling effect causing less than one third amount of dehydration has also been demonstrated on the artificial sweating skin platform with feedback control loop simulating human body perspiration situation. Moreover, the practical application feasibility of the i-Cool textile design principles has been validated as well. Owing to its exceptional personal perspiration management performance in liquid water wicking, fast evaporation, efficient cooling effect and reduced human body dehydration/electrolyte loss, we expect this i-Cool textile provides promising design guidelines for next-generation personal perspiration management textile.
