Active Reasoning in an Open-World Environment

Recent advances in vision-language learning have achieved notable success on complete-information question-answering datasets through the integration of extensive world knowledge. Yet, most models operate passively, responding to questions based on pre-stored knowledge. In stark contrast, humans possess the ability to actively explore, accumulate, and reason using both newfound and existing information to tackle incomplete-information questions. In response to this gap, we introduce $Conan$, an interactive open-world environment devised for the assessment of active reasoning. $Conan$ facilitates active exploration and promotes multi-round abductive inference, reminiscent of rich, open-world settings like Minecraft. Diverging from previous works that lean primarily on single-round deduction via instruction following, $Conan$ compels agents to actively interact with their surroundings, amalgamating new evidence with prior knowledge to elucidate events from incomplete observations. Our analysis on $Conan$ underscores the shortcomings of contemporary state-of-the-art models in active exploration and understanding complex scenarios. Additionally, we explore Abduction from Deduction, where agents harness Bayesian rules to recast the challenge of abduction as a deductive process. Through $Conan$, we aim to galvanize advancements in active reasoning and set the stage for the next generation of artificial intelligence agents adept at dynamically engaging in environments.

Evaluating and Inducing Personality in Pre-trained Language Models

Standardized and quantified evaluation of machine behaviors is a crux of understanding LLMs. In this study, we draw inspiration from psychometric studies by leveraging human personality theory as a tool for studying machine behaviors. Originating as a philosophical quest for human behaviors, the study of personality delves into how individuals differ in thinking, feeling, and behaving. Toward building and understanding human-like social machines, we are motivated to ask: Can we assess machine behaviors by leveraging human psychometric tests in a principled and quantitative manner? If so, can we induce a specific personality in LLMs? To answer these questions, we introduce the Machine Personality Inventory (MPI) tool for studying machine behaviors; MPI follows standardized personality tests, built upon the Big Five Personality Factors (Big Five) theory and personality assessment inventories. By systematically evaluating LLMs with MPI, we provide the first piece of evidence demonstrating the efficacy of MPI in studying LLMs behaviors. We further devise a Personality Prompting (P^2) method to induce LLMs with specific personalities in a controllable way, capable of producing diverse and verifiable behaviors. We hope this work sheds light on future studies by adopting personality as the essential indicator for various downstream tasks, and could further motivate research into equally intriguing human-like machine behaviors.

Interactive Visual Reasoning under Uncertainty

One of the fundamental cognitive abilities of humans is to quickly resolve uncertainty by generating hypotheses and testing them via active trials. Encountering a novel phenomenon accompanied by ambiguous cause-effect relationships, humans make hypotheses against data, conduct inferences from observation, test their theory via experimentation, and correct the proposition if inconsistency arises. These iterative processes persist until the underlying mechanism becomes clear. In this work, we devise the IVRE (pronounced as "ivory") environment for evaluating artificial agents' reasoning ability under uncertainty. IVRE is an interactive environment featuring rich scenarios centered around Blicket detection. Agents in IVRE are placed into environments with various ambiguous action-effect pairs and asked to determine each object's role. They are encouraged to propose effective and efficient experiments to validate their hypotheses based on observations and actively gather new information. The game ends when all uncertainties are resolved or the maximum number of trials is consumed. By evaluating modern artificial agents in IVRE, we notice a clear failure of today's learning methods compared to humans. Such inefficacy in interactive reasoning ability under uncertainty calls for future research in building human-like intelligence.

Twin-field quantum key distribution with local frequency reference

Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) overcomes the linear rate-loss limit, which promises a boost of secure key rate over long distance. However, the complexity of eliminating the frequency differences between the independent laser sources hinders its practical application. Here, taking the saturated absorption spectroscopy of acetylene as an absolute reference, we propose and demonstrate a simple and practical approach to realize TF-QKD without requiring relative frequency control of the independent laser sources. Adopting the 4-intensity sending-or-not-sending TF-QKD protocol, we experimentally demonstrate the TF-QKD over 502 km, 301 km and 201 km ultra-low loss optical fiber respectively. We expect this high-performance scheme will find widespread usage in future intercity and free-space quantum communication networks.

A diffusive wetting model for water entry/exit based on the weakly-compressible SPH method

This paper proposes a diffusive wetting model for the weakly-compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method to simulate individual water entry/exit as well as the complete process from water entry to exit. The model is composed of a physically consistent diffusive wetting equation to describe the wetting evolution at the fluid-solid interface, a wetting-coupled identification approach to determine the type of fluid particles by taking into account the wetting degree of the contacted solid, and a numerical regularization on the fluid particles at fully wetted fluid-solid interface. The accuracy, efficiency, and versatility of the present model are validated through qualitative and quantitative comparisons with experiments, including the 3-D water entry of a sphere, the 2-D water entry/exit of a cylinder, and the complete process from water entry to exit of a 2-D cylinder.

Self-Supervised 3D Scene Flow Estimation and Motion Prediction using Local Rigidity Prior

In this article, we investigate self-supervised 3D scene flow estimation and class-agnostic motion prediction on point clouds. A realistic scene can be well modeled as a collection of rigidly moving parts, therefore its scene flow can be represented as a combination of the rigid motion of these individual parts. Building upon this observation, we propose to generate pseudo scene flow labels for self-supervised learning through piecewise rigid motion estimation, in which the source point cloud is decomposed into local regions and each region is treated as rigid. By rigidly aligning each region with its potential counterpart in the target point cloud, we obtain a region-specific rigid transformation to generate its pseudo flow labels. To mitigate the impact of potential outliers on label generation, when solving the rigid registration for each region, we alternately perform three steps: establishing point correspondences, measuring the confidence for the correspondences, and updating the rigid transformation based on the correspondences and their confidence. As a result, confident correspondences will dominate label generation and a validity mask will be derived for the generated pseudo labels. By using the pseudo labels together with their validity mask for supervision, models can be trained in a self-supervised manner. Extensive experiments on FlyingThings3D and KITTI datasets demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance in self-supervised scene flow learning, without any ground truth scene flow for supervision, even performing better than some supervised counterparts. Additionally, our method is further extended to class-agnostic motion prediction and significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art self-supervised methods on nuScenes dataset.

Essentially non-hourglass and non-tensile-instability SPH elastic dynamics

Since the tension instability was discovered in updated Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ULSPH) at the end of the 20th century, researchers have made considerable efforts to suppress its occurrence. However, up to the present day, this problem has not been fundamentally resolved. In this paper, the concept of hourglass modes is firstly introduced into ULSPH, and the inherent causes of tension instability in elastic dynamics are clarified based on this brand-new perspective. Specifically, we present an essentially non-hourglass formulation by decomposing the shear acceleration with the Laplacian operator, and a comprehensive set of challenging benchmark cases for elastic dynamics is used to showcase that our method can completely eliminate tensile instability by resolving hourglass modes. The present results reveal the true origin of tension instability and challenge the traditional understanding of its sources, i.e., hourglass modes are the real culprit behind inducing this instability in tension zones rather that the tension itself. Furthermore, a time integration scheme known as dual-criteria time stepping is adopted into the simulation of solids for the first time, to significantly enhance computational efficiency.

Exploring Mirror Twin Higgs Cosmology with Present and Future Weak Lensing Surveys

We explore the potential of precision cosmological data to study non-minimal dark sectors by updating the cosmological constraint on the mirror twin Higgs model (MTH). The MTH model addresses the Higgs little hierarchy problem by introducing dark sector particles. In this work, we perform a Bayesian global analysis that includes the latest cosmic shear measurement from the DES three-year survey and the Planck CMB and BAO data. In the early Universe, the mirror baryon and mirror radiation behave as dark matter and dark radiation, and their presence modifies the Universe's expansion history. Additionally, the scattering between mirror baryon and photon generates the dark acoustic oscillation process, suppressing the matter power spectrum from the cosmic shear measurement. We demonstrate how current data constrain these corrections to the $Λ$CDM cosmology and find that for a viable solution to the little hierarchy problem, the proportion of MTH dark matter cannot exceed about $30\%$ of the total dark matter density, unless the temperature of twin photon is less than $30\%$ of that of the standard model photon. While the MTH model is presently not a superior solution to the observed $H_0$ tension compared to the $Λ$CDM+$ΔN_{\rm eff}$ model, we demonstrate that it has the potential to alleviate both the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions, especially if the $S_8$ tension persists in the future and approaches the result reported by the Planck SZ (2013) analysis. In this case, the MTH model can relax the tensions while satisfying the DES power spectrum constraint up to $k \lesssim 10~h\rm {Mpc}^{-1}$. If the MTH model is indeed accountable for the $S_8$ and $H_0$ tensions, we show that the future China Space Station Telescope (CSST) can determine the twin baryon abundance with a $10\%$ level precision.

Engineering field-insensitive molecular clock transitions for symmetry violation searches

Molecules are a powerful platform to probe fundamental symmetry violations beyond the Standard Model, as they offer both large amplification factors and robustness against systematic errors. As experimental sensitivities improve, it is important to develop new methods to suppress sensitivity to external electromagnetic fields, as limits on the ability to control these fields are a major experimental concern. Here we show that sensitivity to both external magnetic and electric fields can be simultaneously suppressed using engineered radio frequency, microwave, or two-photon transitions that maintain large amplification of CP-violating effects. By performing a clock measurement on these transitions, CP-violating observables including the electron electric dipole moment, nuclear Schiff moment, and magnetic quadrupole moment can be measured with suppression of external field sensitivity of $\gtrsim$100 generically, and even more in many cases. Furthermore, the method is compatible with traditional Ramsey measurements, offers internal co-magnetometry, and is useful for systems with large angular momentum commonly present in molecular searches for nuclear CP-violation.

CrossZoom: Simultaneously Motion Deblurring and Event Super-Resolving

Even though the collaboration between traditional and neuromorphic event cameras brings prosperity to frame-event based vision applications, the performance is still confined by the resolution gap crossing two modalities in both spatial and temporal domains. This paper is devoted to bridging the gap by increasing the temporal resolution for images, i.e., motion deblurring, and the spatial resolution for events, i.e., event super-resolving, respectively. To this end, we introduce CrossZoom, a novel unified neural Network (CZ-Net) to jointly recover sharp latent sequences within the exposure period of a blurry input and the corresponding High-Resolution (HR) events. Specifically, we present a multi-scale blur-event fusion architecture that leverages the scale-variant properties and effectively fuses cross-modality information to achieve cross-enhancement. Attention-based adaptive enhancement and cross-interaction prediction modules are devised to alleviate the distortions inherent in Low-Resolution (LR) events and enhance the final results through the prior blur-event complementary information. Furthermore, we propose a new dataset containing HR sharp-blurry images and the corresponding HR-LR event streams to facilitate future research. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. A Phase-Coded Time-Domain Interleaved OTFS Waveform with Improved Ambiguity Function

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a significant application scenario in future wireless communication networks, and sensing capability of a waveform is always evaluated by the ambiguity function. To enhance the sensing performance of the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) waveform, we propose a novel time-domain interleaved cyclic-shifted P4-coded OTFS (TICP4-OTFS) with improved ambiguity function. TICP4-OTFS can achieve superior autocorrelation features in both the time and frequency domains by exploiting the multicarrier-like form of OTFS after interleaved and the favorable autocorrelation attributes of the P4 code. Furthermore, we present the vectorized formulation of TICP4-OTFS modulation as well as its signal structure in each domain. Numerical simulations show that our proposed TICP4-OTFS waveform outperforms OTFS with a narrower mainlobe as well as lower and more distant sidelobes in terms of delay and Doppler-dimensional ambiguity functions, and an instance of range estimation using pulse compression is illustrated to exhibit the proposed waveform\u2019s greater resolution. Besides, TICP4-OTFS achieves better performance of bit error rate for communication in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios.

Weakly supervised learning for pattern classification in serial femtosecond crystallography

Serial femtosecond crystallography at X-ray free electron laser facilities opens a new era for the determination of crystal structure. However, the data processing of those experiments is facing unprecedented challenge, because the total number of diffraction patterns needed to determinate a high-resolution structure is huge. Machine learning methods are very likely to play important roles in dealing with such a large volume of data. Convolutional neural networks have made a great success in the field of pattern classification, however, training of the networks need very large datasets with labels. Th is heavy dependence on labeled datasets will seriously restrict the application of networks, because it is very costly to annotate a large number of diffraction patterns. In this article we present our job on the classification of diffraction pattern by weakly supervised algorithms, with the aim of reducing as much as possible the size of the labeled dataset required for training. Our result shows that weakly supervised methods can significantly reduce the need for the number of labeled patterns while achieving comparable accuracy to fully supervised methods.

Robust Geometry-Preserving Depth Estimation Using Differentiable Rendering

In this study, we address the challenge of 3D scene structure recovery from monocular depth estimation. While traditional depth estimation methods leverage labeled datasets to directly predict absolute depth, recent advancements advocate for mix-dataset training, enhancing generalization across diverse scenes. However, such mixed dataset training yields depth predictions only up to an unknown scale and shift, hindering accurate 3D reconstructions. Existing solutions necessitate extra 3D datasets or geometry-complete depth annotations, constraints that limit their versatility. In this paper, we propose a learning framework that trains models to predict geometry-preserving depth without requiring extra data or annotations. To produce realistic 3D structures, we render novel views of the reconstructed scenes and design loss functions to promote depth estimation consistency across different views. Comprehensive experiments underscore our framework's superior generalization capabilities, surpassing existing state-of-the-art methods on several benchmark datasets without leveraging extra training information. Moreover, our innovative loss functions empower the model to autonomously recover domain-specific scale-and-shift coefficients using solely unlabeled images.

Learning Parallax for Stereo Event-based Motion Deblurring

Due to the extremely low latency, events have been recently exploited to supplement lost information for motion deblurring. Existing approaches largely rely on the perfect pixel-wise alignment between intensity images and events, which is not always fulfilled in the real world. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel coarse-to-fine framework, named NETwork of Event-based motion Deblurring with STereo event and intensity cameras (St-EDNet), to recover high-quality images directly from the misaligned inputs, consisting of a single blurry image and the concurrent event streams. Specifically, the coarse spatial alignment of the blurry image and the event streams is first implemented with a cross-modal stereo matching module without the need for ground-truth depths. Then, a dual-feature embedding architecture is proposed to gradually build the fine bidirectional association of the coarsely aligned data and reconstruct the sequence of the latent sharp images. Furthermore, we build a new dataset with STereo Event and Intensity Cameras (StEIC), containing real-world events, intensity images, and dense disparity maps. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed network over state-of-the-art methods.

An SPH formulation for general plate and shell structures with finite deformation and large rotation

In this paper, we propose a reduced-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) formulation for quasi-static and dynamic analyses of plate and shell structures undergoing finite deformation and large rotation. By exploiting Uflyand-Mindlin plate theory, the present surface-particle formulation is able to resolve the thin structures by using only one layer of particles at the mid-surface. To resolve the geometric non-linearity and capture finite deformation and large rotation, two reduced-dimensional linear-reproducing correction matrices are introduced, and weighted non-singularity conversions between the rotation angle and pseudo normal are formulated. A new non-isotropic Kelvin-Voigt damping is proposed especially for the both thin and moderately thick plate and shell structures to increase the numerical stability. In addition, a shear-scaled momentum-conserving hourglass control algorithm with an adaptive limiter is introduced to suppress the mismatches between the particle position and pseudo normal and those estimated with the deformation gradient. A comprehensive set of test problems, for which the analytical or numerical results from literature or those of the volume-particle SPH model are available for quantitative and qualitative comparison, are examined to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the present method.

Extended Eulerian SPH and its realization of FVM

Eulerian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (Eulerian SPH) is considered as a potential meshless alternative to a traditional Eulerian mesh-based method, i.e. finite volume method (FVM), in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). While researchers have analyzed the differences between these two methods, a rigorous comparison of their performance and computational efficiency is hindered by the constraint related to the normal direction of interfaces in pairwise particle interactions within Eulerian SPH framework. To address this constraint and improve numerical accuracy, we introduce Eulerian SPH extensions, including particle relaxation to satisfy zero-order consistency, kernel correction matrix to ensure first-order consistency and release the constraint associated with the normal direction of interfaces, as well as dissipation limiters to enhance numerical accuracy and these extensions make Eulerian SPH rigorously equivalent to FVM. Furthermore, we implement mesh-based FVM within SPHinXsys, an open-source SPH library, through developing a parser to extract necessary information from the mesh file which is exported in the MESH format using the commercial software ICEM. Therefore, these comprehensive approaches enable a rigorous comparison between these two methods.

PivotNet: Vectorized Pivot Learning for End-to-end HD Map Construction

Vectorized high-definition map online construction has garnered considerable attention in the field of autonomous driving research. Most existing approaches model changeable map elements using a fixed number of points, or predict local maps in a two-stage autoregressive manner, which may miss essential details and lead to error accumulation. Towards precise map element learning, we propose a simple yet effective architecture named PivotNet, which adopts unified pivot-based map representations and is formulated as a direct set prediction paradigm. Concretely, we first propose a novel point-to-line mask module to encode both the subordinate and geometrical point-line priors in the network. Then, a well-designed pivot dynamic matching module is proposed to model the topology in dynamic point sequences by introducing the concept of sequence matching. Furthermore, to supervise the position and topology of the vectorized point predictions, we propose a dynamic vectorized sequence loss. Extensive experiments and ablations show that PivotNet is remarkably superior to other SOTAs by 5.9 mAP at least. The code will be available soon.
