On hypergraph cliques and polynomial programming

Motzkin and Straus established a close connection between the maximum clique problem and a solution (namely graph-Lagrangians) to the maximum value of a class of homogeneous quadratic multilinear functions over the standard simplex of the Euclidean space in 1965. This connection provides a new proof of Turán's theorem. Recently, an extension of Motzkin-Straus theorem was proved for non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1 or 2 vertices in \cite{PPTZ}. It is interesting if similar results hold for other non-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we give some connection between polynomial programming and the clique of non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1, or 2, and more vertices. Specifically, we obtain some Motzkin-Straus type results in terms of the graph-Lagrangian of non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1, or 2, and more vertices.

An extension of Motzkin-Straus Theorem to non-uniform hypergraphs and its applications

In 1965, Motzkin and Straus established a remarkable connection between the order of a maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph and provided a new proof of Turán's theorem using the connection. The connection of Lagrangians and Turán densities can be also used to prove the fundamental theorem of Erdös-Stone-Simonovits on Turán densities of graphs. Very recently, the study of Turán densities of non-uniform hypergraphs have been motivated by extremal poset problems. In this paper, we attempt to explore the applications of Lagrangian method in determining Turán densities of non-uniform hypergraphs. We first give a definition of the Lagrangian of a non-uniform hypergraph, then give an extension of Motzkin-Straus theorem to non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1 or 2 vertices. Applying it, we give an extension of Erdös-Stone-Simonovits theorem to non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1 or 2 vertices.

On Lagrangians of r-uniform Hypergraphs

A remarkable connection between the order of a maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph was established by Motzkin and Straus in [7]. This connection and its extensions were successfully employed in optimization to provide heuristics for the maximum clique number in graphs. It has been also applied in spectral graph theory. Estimating the Lagrangians of hypergraphs has been successfully applied in the course of studying the Turan densities of several hypergraphs as well. It is useful in practice if Motzkin-Straus type results hold for hypergraphs. However, the obvious generalization of Motzkin and Straus' result to hypergraphs is false. We attempt to explore the relationship between the Lagrangian of a hypergraph and the order of its maximum cliques for hypergraphs when the number of edges is in certain range. In this paper, we give some Motzkin-Straus type results for r-uniform hypergraphs. These results generalize and refine a result of Talbot in [19] and a result in [11].

Some Results on Lagrangians of Hypergraphs

In 1965, Motzkin and Straus [5] provided a new proof of Turan's theorem based on a continuous characterization of the clique number of a graph using the Lagrangian of a graph. This new proof aroused interests in the study of Lagrangians of r-uniform graphs. The Lagrangian of a hypergraph has been a useful tool in hypergraph extremal problems. Sidorenko and Frankl-Furedi applied Lagrangians of hypergraphs in finding Turan densities of hypergraphs. Frankl and Rodl applied it in disproving Erdos' jumping constant conjecture. In most applications, we need an upper bound for the Lagrangian of a hypergraph. Frankl and Furedi conjectured that the r-uniform graph with m edges formed by taking the first m sets in the colex ordering of $N^(r)$ has the largest Lagrangian of all r-uniform graphs with m edges. Talbot in [14] provided some evidences for Frankl and Furedi's conjecture. In this paper, we prove that the r-uniform graph with m edges formed by taking the first m sets in the colex ordering of $N^(r)$ has the largest Lagrangian of all r-uniform graphs on t vertices with m edges when ${t choose r}-3$ or ${t choose r}-4$. As an implication, we also prove that Frankl and Furedi's conjecture holds for 3-uniform graphs with ${t choose 3}-3$ or ${t choose 3}-4$ edges.

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Theory of Dipolar Fermi Gases

We construct a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory that describes a spinless Fermi gas with long-range interaction. We apply this theory to a system of uniform dipolar fermionic polar molecules, which has attracted much attention recently, due to rapid experimental progress in achieving such systems. By calculating the anisotropic superfluid order parameter, and the critical temperature $T_{c}$, we show that, "hign $T_c$" superfluid can be achieved with a quite modest value of interaction strength for polar molecules. In addition, we also show that the presence of the Fock exchange interaction enhances superfluid pairing.

Astrodynamical Space Test of Relativity using Optical Devices I (ASTROD I) - A class-M fundamental physics mission proposal for Cosmic Vision 2015-2025

ASTROD I is a planned interplanetary space mission with multiple goals. The primary aims are: to test General Relativity with an improvement in sensitivity of over 3 orders of magnitude, improving our understanding of gravity and aiding the development of a new quantum gravity theory; to measure key solar system parameters with increased accuracy, advancing solar physics and our knowledge of the solar system and to measure the time rate of change of the gravitational constant with an order of magnitude improvement and the anomalous Pioneer acceleration, thereby probing dark matter and dark energy gravitationally. It is an international project, with major contributions from Europe and China and is envisaged as the first in a series of ASTROD missions. ASTROD I will consist of one spacecraft carrying a telescope, four lasers, two event timers and a clock. Two-way, two-wavelength laser pulse ranging will be used between the spacecraft in a solar orbit and deep space laser stations on Earth, to achieve the ASTROD I goals. A second mission, ASTROD II is envisaged as a three-spacecraft mission which would test General Relativity to one part per billion, enable detection of solar g-modes, measure the solar Lense-Thirring effect to 10 parts per million, and probe gravitational waves at frequencies below the LISA bandwidth. In the third phase (ASTROD III or Super-ASTROD), larger orbits could be implemented to map the outer solar system and to probe primordial gravitational-waves at frequencies below the ASTROD II bandwidth.

Influence of configuration and acoustic phonons on three-qubit controlled-phase gate

We discuss the configuration and acoustic phonon effect on the conditional phase gate using self assembled quantum dots. As an example, we discuss the simplest three dots conditional phase gate, and we found that the fidelity of conditional phase gate depends strongly on the configuration and temperature. Numerical simulation shows that line-configuration resonant with lower single exciton energy level performs better during the gate operation.
