Imaging domain reversal in an ultrathin van der Waals ferromagnet

The recent isolation of two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials has uncovered rich physics that often differs from the magnetic behaviour of their bulk counterparts. However, the microscopic details of fundamental processes such as the initial magnetization or domain reversal, which govern the magnetic hysteresis, remain largely unknown in the ultrathin limit. Here we employ a widefield nitrogen-vacancy (NV) microscope to directly image these processes in few-layer flakes of magnetic semiconductor vanadium triiodide (VI$_3$). We observe complete and abrupt switching of most flakes at fields $H_c\approx0.5-1$ T (at 5 K) independent of thickness down to two atomic layers, with no intermediate partially-reversed state. The coercive field decreases as the temperature approaches the Curie temperature ($T_c\approx50$ K), however, the switching remains abrupt. We then image the initial magnetization process, which reveals thickness-dependent domain wall depinning fields well below $H_c$. These results point to ultrathin VI$_3$ being a nucleation-type hard ferromagnet, where the coercive field is set by the anisotropy-limited domain wall nucleation field. This work illustrates the power of widefield NV microscopy to investigate magnetization processes in van der Waals ferromagnets, which could be used to elucidate the origin of the hard ferromagnetic properties of other materials and explore field- and current-driven domain wall dynamics.

Magic continuum in twisted bilayer WSe2

Emergent quantum phases driven by electronic interactions can manifest in materials with narrowly dispersing, i.e. "flat", energy bands. Recently, flat bands have been realized in a variety of graphene-based heterostructures using the tuning parameters of twist angle, layer stacking and pressure, and resulting in correlated insulator and superconducting states. Here we report the experimental observation of similar correlated phenomena in twisted bilayer tungsten diselenide (tWSe2), a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD). Unlike twisted bilayer graphene where the flat band appears only within a narrow range around a "magic angle", we observe correlated states over a continuum of angles, spanning 4 degree to 5.1 degree. A Mott-like insulator appears at half band filling that can be sensitively tuned with displacement field. Hall measurements supported by ab initio calculations suggest that the strength of the insulator is driven by the density of states at half filling, consistent with a 2D Hubbard model in a regime of moderate interactions. At 5.1 degree twist, we observe evidence of superconductivity upon doping away from half filling, reaching zero resistivity around 3 K. Our results establish twisted bilayer TMDs as a model system to study interaction-driven phenomena in flat bands with dynamically tunable interactions.

Muon spin rotation and relaxation in Pr$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$: superconductivity and magnetism in Pr-rich alloys

The Pr-rich end of the alloy series Pr$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has been studied using muon spin rotation and relaxation. The end compound PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is an unconventional heavy-fermion superconductor, which exhibits a spontaneous magnetic field in the superconducting phase associated with broken time-reversal symmetry. No spontaneous field is observed in the Nd-doped alloys for x $>$ 0.05. The superfluid density is insensitive to Nd concentration, and no Nd$^{3+}$ static magnetism is found down to the lowest temperatures of measurement. Together with the slow suppression of the superconducting transition temperature with Nd doping, these results suggest anomalously weak coupling between Nd spins and conduction-band states.

Charge-stripe order, antiferromagnetism, and spin dynamics in the cuprate-analog nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$

We report a muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) study of the cuprate-analog nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$, which undergoes a transition at 105 K to a low-temperature phase with charge-stripe and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order on square planar NiO$_2$ layers. Zero-field $μ$SR shows that this transition is abrupt and that the AFM configuration is commensurate. Comparison of observed muon precession frequencies with Ni dipolar field calculations yields Ni moments $\lesssim 0.5μ_B$. Dynamic muon spin relaxation above 105 K suggests critical slowing of Ni spin fluctuations, but is inconsistent with corresponding $^{139}$La NMR results. Critical slowing and an abrupt transition are also observed in the planar cuprate AFM La$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$, where they are evidence for weakly interplanar-coupled two-dimensional AFM spin fluctuations, but our $μ$SR data do not agree quantitatively with theoretical predictions for this scenario.

Antisymmetric magnetoresistance in van der Waals Fe3GeTe2/graphite/Fe3GeTe2 tri-layer heterostructures

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials are rapidly establishing themselves as effective building blocks for next generation spintronic devices. When layered with non-magnetic vdW materials, such as graphene and/or topological insulators, vdW heterostructures can be assembled (with no requirement for lattice matching) to provide otherwise unattainable device structures and functionalities. We report a hitherto rarely seen antisymmetric magnetoresistance (MR) effect in van der Waals heterostructured Fe3GeTe2/graphite/Fe3GeTe2 devices. Unlike conventional giant magnetoresistance (GMR) which is characterized by two resistance states, the MR in these vdW heterostructures features distinct high, intermediate and low resistance states. This unique characteristic is suggestive of underlying physical mechanisms that differ from those observed before. After theoretical calculations, the three resistance behavior was attributed to a spin momentum locking induced spin polarized current at the graphite/FGT interface. Our work reveals that ferromagnetic heterostructures assembled from vdW materials can exhibit substantially different properties to those exhibited by similar heterostructures grown in vacuum. Hence, it highlights the potential for new physics and new spintronic applications to be discovered using vdW heterostructures.

Renormalizations in unconventional superconducting states of Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_{x}$CoIn$_{5}$

We have measured the superconducting penetration depth~$Λ(T)$ in the heavy-fermion/intermediate-valent superconducting alloy series~Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_x$CoIn$_5$ using transverse-field muon spin relaxation, to study the effect of intermediate-valent Yb doping on Fermi-liquid renormalization. From $Λ(T)$ we determine the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$, and find that it decreases continuously with increasing nominal Yb concentration~$x$, i.e., with increasing intermediate valence. The temperature-dependent renormalization of the "normal" fluid density~$ρ_N(T) = ρ_s(0) - ρ_s(T)$ in both the heavy-fermion and intermediate valence limits is proportional to the temperature-dependent renormalization of the specific heat. This indicates that the temperature-dependent Fermi-liquid Landau parameters of the superconducting quasiparticles entering the two different physical quantities are the same. These results represent an important advance in understanding of both intermediate valence and heavy-fermion phenomena in superconductors.

Broken time-reversal symmetry in superconducting Pr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Pt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$

The superconducting state of the filled skutterudite alloy series Pr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Pt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ has been systematically studied by specific heat, zero-field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), and superconducting critical field measurements. An additional inhomogeneous local magnetic field, indicative of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS), is observed in the superconducting states of the alloys. For $x \lesssim 0.5$ the broken-TRS phase sets in below a temperature $T_m$ distinctly lower than the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. For $x \gtrsim 0.5$ $T_m \approx T_c$. The local field strength decreases as $x \to 1$, where LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is characterized by conventional pairing. The lower critical field $H_{c1}(T)$ of PrPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ shows the onset of a second quadratic temperature region below $T_q \sim T_m$. Upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ measurements suggest multiband superconductivity, and point gap nodes are consistent with the specific heat data. In Pr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Pt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ only a single specific heat discontinuity is observed at $T_c$, in contrast to the second jump seen in PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ below $T_c$. These results suggest that superconductivity in PrPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is characterized by a complex order parameter.

Taming Distrust in the Decentralized Internet with PIXIU

Decentralized Internet is booming. People are fascinated by its promise that users can truly own their data. However, in a decentralized Internet, completing a task usually involves multiple nodes with mutual distrust. Such distrust might eventually become a major obstacle for the growth of the decentralized Internet. In this paper, we analyze the distrust using a simple model and highlight the properties required to faithfully accomplish one task in a decentralized Internet. We also introduce our draft solution -- PIXIU, a framework to mitigate the distrust among different nodes. In PIXIU, we design and utilize trust-λ and decentralized executor to achieve the above-needed properties.

Integrated Stabilization Policy over a Software Defined Network

In this paper, we mainly investigate an integrated system operating under a software defined network (SDN) protocol. SDN is a new networking paradigm in which network intelligence is centrally administered and data is communicated via channels that are physically separated from those conveying user data. Under the SDN architecture, it is feasible to set up multiple flows for transmitting control signals to an actuator with high priority for each individual application. While each flow may suffer random transmission delay, we focus on the stabilization problem under the joint design of the event-driven strategy in actuator and the control policy in decision-maker. By introducing a predefined application time, the integrated system can be reformulated as the form of stochastic system with input delay and multiplicative noise. For such system, we propose a set of necessary and sufficient stabilization conditions. Specifically, for the scalar system, we derive the allowable sampling period bound that can guarantee stabilization in terms of the probability distributions of the random transmission delays. A simple example is included to show the performance of our theoretic results.

On Stability Condition of Wireless Networked Control Systems under Joint Design of Control Policy and Network Scheduling Policy

In this paper, we study a wireless networked control system (WNCS) with $N \ge 2$ sub-systems sharing a common wireless channel. Each sub-system consists of a plant and a controller and the control message must be delivered from the controller to the plant through the shared wireless channel. The wireless channel is unreliable due to interference and fading. As a result, a packet can be successfully delivered in a slot with a certain probability. A network scheduling policy determines how to transmit those control messages generated by such $N$ sub-systems and directly influences the transmission delay of control messages. We first consider the case that all sub-systems have the same sampling period. We characterize the stability condition of such a WNCS under the joint design of the control policy and the network scheduling policy by means of $2^N$ linear inequalities. We further simplify the stability condition into only one linear inequality for two special cases: the perfect-channel case where the wireless channel can successfully deliver a control message with certainty in each slot, and the symmetric-structure case where all sub-systems have identical system parameters. We then consider the case that different sub-systems can have different sampling periods, where we characterize a sufficient condition for stability.

Possible gapless spin liquid in a rare-earth kagomé lattice magnet Tm$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$Zn$_{2}$O$_{14}$

We report the thermodynamic and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) evidences for a possible gapless spin liquid in Tm$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$Zn$_{2}$O$_{14}$, with the rare-earth ions Tm$^{3+}$ forming a two-dimensional kagomé lattice. We extract the magnetic specific heat of Tm$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$Zn$_{2}$O$_{14}$ by subtracting the phonon contribution of the non-magnetic isostructural material La$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$Zn$_{2}$O$_{14}$. We obtain a clear linear-$T$ temperature dependence of magnetic specific heat at low temperatures, with the heat-capacity coefficient $γ$ = 26.6(1) mJ mol-Tm$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ in the zero temperature limit. No long-range magnetic order was observed down to 0.35 K in the heat capacity measurement. A broad hump around 9 K was observed in the zero field magnetic specific heat and is gradually suppressed in the magnetic fields that also create a spin gap in the specific heat. The absence of magnetic order is further confirmed by the $μ$SR measurement down to 20 mK. We find that the spin-lattice relaxation time remains constant down to the lowest temperatures. We point out that the physics in Tm$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$Zn$_{2}$O$_{14}$ is fundamentally different from the Cu-based herbertsmithite and propose spin liquid ground states with non-Kramers doublets on the kagomé lattice to account for the experimental results.

Learning Based Control Policy and Regret Analysis for Online Quadratic Optimization with Asymmetric Information Structure

In this paper, we propose a learning approach to analyze dynamic systems with asymmetric information structure. Instead of adopting a game theoretic setting, we investigate an online quadratic optimization problem driven by system noises with unknown statistics. Due to information asymmetry, it is infeasible to use classic Kalman filter nor optimal control strategies for such systems. It is necessary and beneficial to develop a robust approach that learns the probability statistics as time goes forward. Motivated by online convex optimization (OCO) theory, we introduce the notion of regret, which is defined as the cumulative performance loss difference between the optimal offline known statistics cost and the optimal online unknown statistics cost. By utilizing dynamic programming and linear minimum mean square biased estimate (LMMSUE), we propose a new type of online state feedback control policies and characterize the behavior of regret in finite time regime. The regret is shown to be sub-linear and bounded by O(ln T). Moreover, we address an online optimization problem with output feedback control policies.

The Efficient Server Audit Problem, Deduplicated Re-execution, and the Web

You put a program on a concurrent server, but you don't trust the server; later, you get a trace of the actual requests that the server received from its clients and the responses that it delivered. You separately get logs from the server; these are untrusted. How can you use the logs to efficiently _verify_ that the responses were derived from running the program on the requests? This is the _Efficient Server Audit Problem_, and it abstracts real-world scenarios, including running a web application on an untrusted provider. We give a solution based on several new techniques, including simultaneous replay and efficient verification of concurrent executions. We implement the solution for PHP web applications. For several applications, our verifier achieves 5.6--10.9x speedup versus simply re-executing, with less than 10 percent overhead for the server.

Hard magnetic properties in nanoflake van der Waals Fe3GeTe2

Two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials have demonstrated fascinating optical, electrical and thickness-dependent characteristics. These have been explored by numerous authors but reports on magnetic properties and spintronic applications of 2D vdW materials are scarce by comparison. By performing anomalous Hall effect transport measurements, we have characterised the thickness dependent magnetic properties of single crystalline vdW Fe3GeTe2. The nanoflakes of this vdW metallic material exhibit a single hard magnetic phase with a near square-shaped magnetic loop, large coercivity (up to 550 mT at 2 K), a Curie temperature near 200 K and strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using criticality analysis, we confirmed the existence of magnetic coupling between vdW atomic layers and obtained an estimated coupling length of ~ 5 vdW layers in Fe3GeTe2. Furthermore, the hard magnetic behaviour of Fe3GeTe2 can be well described by a proposed model. The magnetic properties of Fe3GeTe2 highlight its potential for integration into vdW magnetic heterostructures, paving the way for spintronic research and applications based on these devices.

Anomalous quantum-critical spin dynamics in YFe2Al10

We report results of a muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) study of YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, a quasi-2D nearly-ferromagnetic metal in which unconventional quantum critical behavior is observed. No static Fe$^{2+}$ magnetism, with or without long-range order, is found down to 19~mK\@. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate~$λ$ exhibits power-law divergences in temperature and magnetic field, the latter for fields that are too weak to affect the electronic spin dynamics directly. We attribute this to the proportionality of $λ(ω_μ,T)$ to the dynamic structure factor~$S(ω_μ,T)$, where $ω_μ\approx 10^5$--$10^7~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ is the muon Zeeman frequency. These results suggest critical divergences of $S(ω_μ,T)$ in both temperature and frequency. Power-law scaling and a 2D dissipative quantum XY (2D-DQXY) model both yield forms for $S(ω,T)$ that agree with neutron scattering data ($ω\approx 10^{12}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$). Extrapolation to $μ$SR frequencies agrees semi-quantitatively with the observed temperature dependence of $λ(ω_μ,T)$, but predicts frequency independence for $ω_μ\ll T$ in extreme disagreement with experiment. We conclude that the quantum critical spin dynamics of YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ are not well understood at low frequencies.

Nodal superconductivity coexists with low-moment static magnetism in single-crystalline tetragonal FeS: A muon spin relaxation and rotation study

We report muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on hydrothermally-grown single crystals of the tetragonal superconductor~FeS, which help to clarify the controversial magnetic state and superconducting gap symmetry of this compound. $μ$SR time spectra were obtained from 280~K down to 0.025~K in zero field (ZF) and applied fields up to 20 mT. In ZF the observed loss of initial asymmetry (signal amplitude) and increase of depolarization rate~$Λ_\mathrm{ZF}$ below 10~K indicate the onset of static magnetism, which coexists with superconductivity below $T_c$. Transverse-field $μ$SR yields a muon depolarization rate $σ_\mathrm{sc} \propto λ_{ab}^{-2}$ that clearly shows a linear dependence at low temperature, consistent with nodal superconductivity. The $s{+}d$-wave model gives the best fit to the observed temperature and field dependencies. The normalized superfluid densities versus normalized temperature for different fields collapse onto the same curve, indicating the superconducting gap structure is independent of field. The $T=0$ in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}$(0) = 198(3) nm.

Ultrafast Graphene Light Emitter

Ultrafast electrically driven nanoscale light sources are critical components in nanophotonics. Compound semiconductor-based light sources for the nanophotonic platforms have been extensively investigated over the past decades. However, monolithic ultrafast light sources with a small footprint remain a challenge. Here, we demonstrate electrically driven ultrafast graphene light emitters that achieve light pulse generation with up to 10 GHz bandwidth, across a broad spectral range from the visible to the near-infrared. The fast response results from ultrafast charge carrier dynamics in graphene, and weak electron-acoustic phonon-mediated coupling between the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom. We also find that encapsulating graphene with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers strongly modifies the emission spectrum by changing the local optical density of states, thus providing up to 460 % enhancement compared to the grey-body thermal radiation for a broad peak centered at 720 nm. Furthermore, the hBN encapsulation layers permit stable and bright visible thermal radiation with electronic temperatures up to 2,000 K under ambient conditions, as well as efficient ultrafast electronic cooling via near-field coupling to hybrid polaritonic modes. These high-speed graphene light emitters provide a promising path for on-chip light sources for optical communications and other optoelectronic applications.

Recursive Exponential Weighting for Online Non-convex Optimization

In this paper, we investigate the online non-convex optimization problem which generalizes the classic {online convex optimization problem by relaxing the convexity assumption on the cost function. For this type of problem, the classic exponential weighting online algorithm has recently been shown to attain a sub-linear regret of $O(\sqrt{T\log T})$. In this paper, we introduce a novel recursive structure to the online algorithm to define a recursive exponential weighting algorithm that attains a regret of $O(\sqrt{T})$, matching the well-known regret lower bound. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first online algorithm with provable $O(\sqrt{T})$ regret for the online non-convex optimization problem.
