Unitary control of multiport wave transmission

Controlling wave transmission is crucial for various applications. In this work, we apply the concept of unitary control to manipulate multiport wave transmission. Unitary control aims to control the behaviors of a set of orthogonal waves simultaneously. The approach fully harnesses the capability of wavefront shaping techniques, with promising applications in communication, imaging, and photonic integrated circuits. Here we present a detailed theory of unitary control of wave transmission, focusing on two key characteristics: total (power) transmittance and direct (field) transmission. The total transmittance for an input port represents the fraction of total transmitted power with respect to the input power for wave incident from an input port. The direct transmission for an input port denotes the complex transmission amplitude from that input port to its corresponding output port. We address two main questions: (i) the achievable total transmittance and direct transmission for each port, and (ii) the configuration of unitary control to attain desired transmission values for each port. Our theory illustrates that unitary control enables uniform total transmittance and direct transmission across any medium. Furthermore, we show that reciprocity and energy conservation enforce direct symmetry constraints on wave transmission in both forward and backward directions under unitary control.

Transport measurements of majorization order for wave coherence

We investigate the majorization order for comparing wave coherence and reveal its fundamental consequences in transport measurements, including power distribution, absorption, transmission, and reflection. We prove that all these measurements preserve the majorization order under unitary control, enabling direct experimental characterization of the majorization order. Specifically, waves with lower coherence in the majorization order exhibit more restricted ranges of achievable measurement values. Our results deepen the understanding of coherence in transport phenomena.

Unitary control of partially coherent waves. I. Absorption

The coherent control of wave absorption has important applications in areas such as energy harvesting, imaging, and sensing. However, most practical scenarios involve the absorption of partially coherent rather than fully coherent waves. Here we present a systematic theory of unitary control over the absorption of partially coherent waves by linear systems. Given an absorbing system and incident partially coherent wave, we provide analytical expressions for the range of attainable absorptivity under arbitrary unitary transformations of the incident field. We also present an explicit algorithm to construct the unitary control scheme that achieves any desired absorptivity within that attainable range. As applications of our theory, we derive the conditions required for achieving two new phenomena - partially coherent perfect absorption and partially coherent zero absorption. Furthermore, we prove a theorem relating the coherence properties of the incident field, as quantified by majorization, to the resulting absorption intervals. Our results provide both fundamental insights and practical prescriptions for exploiting unitary control to shape the absorption of partially coherent waves. The theory applies across the electromagnetic spectrum as well as to other classical wave systems such as acoustic waves.

Unitary control of partially coherent waves. II. Transmission or reflection

Coherent control of wave transmission and reflection is crucial for applications in communication, imaging, and sensing. However, many practical scenarios involve partially coherent waves rather than fully coherent ones. We present a systematic theory for the unitary control of partially coherent wave transmission and reflection. For a linear time-invariant system with an incident partially coherent wave, we derive analytical expressions for the range of attainable total transmittance and reflectance under arbitrary unitary transformations. We also introduce an explicit algorithm to construct a unitary control scheme that achieves any desired transmission or reflection within the attainable range. As applications of our theory, we establish conditions for four novel phenomena: partially coherent perfect transmission, partially coherent perfect reflection, partially coherent zero transmission, and partially coherent zero reflection. We also prove a theorem that relates the degree of coherence of the incident field, quantified by the majorization order, to the resulting transmission and reflection intervals. Furthermore, we demonstrate that reciprocity (or energy conservation) imposes direct symmetry constraints on bilateral transmission (or transmission and reflection) of partially coherent waves under unitary control. Our results provide fundamental insights and practical guidelines for using unitary control to manipulate the transmission and reflection of partially coherent waves. This theory applies to various wave systems, including electromagnetic and acoustic waves.

Exceptional features in nonlinear Hermitian systems

Non-Hermitian systems and their topological singularities, such as exceptional points (EPs), lines, and surfaces, have recently attracted intense interest. The investigation of these exceptional constituents has led to fruitful applications. The responsivity of the eigenvalue diverges at EPs, and chiral state transfer occurs when encircling an EP. Traditionally, it was believed that these exceptional features were unique to non-Hermitian systems requiring gain, loss, or nonreciprocal hopping. Here, we show that these exceptional features are also present in nonlinear Hermitian systems. We consider two coupled resonators with Kerr nonlinearity in one resonator, and no non-Hermitian terms. We identify EP-like points (ELPs) on the eigenspectra where the critical behaviors are the same as those of typical EPs. Additionally, this nonlinear Hermitian system can be mapped to linear non-Hermitian systems, with ELPs corresponding to EPs. We also demonstrate that encirclement around an ELP in the parameter space leads to unique chiral state transfer behavior.

Topological winding guaranteed coherent orthogonal scattering

Coherent control has enabled various novel phenomena in wave scattering. We introduce an effect called coherent orthogonal scattering, where the output wave becomes orthogonal to the reference output state without scatterers. This effect leads to a unity extinction coefficient and complete mode conversion. We examine the conditions for this effect and reveal its topological nature by relating it to the indivisibility between the dimension and the winding number of scattering submatrices. These findings deepen our understanding of topological scattering phenomena.

Experimental quantum computational chemistry with optimised unitary coupled cluster ansatz

Quantum computational chemistry has emerged as an important application of quantum computing. Hybrid quantum-classical computing methods, such as variational quantum eigensolvers (VQE), have been designed as promising solutions to quantum chemistry problems, yet challenges due to theoretical complexity and experimental imperfections hinder progress in achieving reliable and accurate results. Experimental works for solving electronic structures are consequently still restricted to nonscalable (hardware efficient) or classically simulable (Hartree-Fock) ansatz, or limited to a few qubits with large errors. The experimental realisation of scalable and high-precision quantum chemistry simulation remains elusive. Here, we address the critical challenges {associated with} solving molecular electronic structures using noisy quantum processors. Our protocol presents significant improvements in the circuit depth and running time, key metrics for chemistry simulation. Through systematic hardware enhancements and the integration of error mitigation techniques, we push forward the limit of experimental quantum computational chemistry and successfully scale up the implementation of VQE with an optimised unitary coupled-cluster ansatz to 12 qubits. We produce high-precision results of the ground-state energy for molecules with error suppression by around two orders of magnitude. We achieve chemical accuracy for H$_2$ at all bond distances and LiH at small bond distances in the experiment, even beyond the two recent concurrent works. Our work demonstrates a feasible path towards a scalable solution to electronic structure calculation, validating the key technological features and identifying future challenges for this goal.

FinRobot: An Open-Source AI Agent Platform for Financial Applications using Large Language Models

As financial institutions and professionals increasingly incorporate Large Language Models (LLMs) into their workflows, substantial barriers, including proprietary data and specialized knowledge, persist between the finance sector and the AI community. These challenges impede the AI community's ability to enhance financial tasks effectively. Acknowledging financial analysis's critical role, we aim to devise financial-specialized LLM-based toolchains and democratize access to them through open-source initiatives, promoting wider AI adoption in financial decision-making. In this paper, we introduce FinRobot, a novel open-source AI agent platform supporting multiple financially specialized AI agents, each powered by LLM. Specifically, the platform consists of four major layers: 1) the Financial AI Agents layer that formulates Financial Chain-of-Thought (CoT) by breaking sophisticated financial problems down into logical sequences; 2) the Financial LLM Algorithms layer dynamically configures appropriate model application strategies for specific tasks; 3) the LLMOps and DataOps layer produces accurate models by applying training/fine-tuning techniques and using task-relevant data; 4) the Multi-source LLM Foundation Models layer that integrates various LLMs and enables the above layers to access them directly. Finally, FinRobot provides hands-on for both professional-grade analysts and laypersons to utilize powerful AI techniques for advanced financial analysis. We open-source FinRobot at \url{https://github.com/AI4Finance-Foundation/FinRobot}.

Efficient Representation of Natural Image Patches

Utilizing an abstract information processing model based on minimal yet realistic assumptions inspired by biological systems, we study how to achieve the early visual system's two ultimate objectives: efficient information transmission and accurate sensor probability distribution modeling. We prove that optimizing for information transmission does not guarantee optimal probability distribution modeling in general. We illustrate, using a two-pixel (2D) system and image patches, that an efficient representation can be realized through a nonlinear population code driven by two types of biologically plausible loss functions that depend solely on output. After unsupervised learning, our abstract information processing model bears remarkable resemblances to biological systems, despite not mimicking many features of real neurons, such as spiking activity. A preliminary comparison with a contemporary deep learning model suggests that our model offers a significant efficiency advantage. Our model provides novel insights into the computational theory of early visual systems as well as a potential new approach to enhance the efficiency of deep learning models.

Braiding topology of symmetry-protected degeneracy points in non-Hermitian systems

Degeneracy points in non-Hermitian systems are of great interest. While a homotopic framework exists for understanding their behavior in the absence of symmetry, it does not apply to symmetry-protected degeneracy points with reduced codimension. In this work, utilizing algebraic topology, we provide a systematic classification of these symmetry-protected degenerate points and investigate the braid conservation rule followed by them. Using a model Hamiltonian and circuit simulation, we discover that, contrary to simple annihilation, pairwise-created symmetry-protected degeneracy points merge into a higher-order degeneracy point, which goes beyond the abelian picture. Our findings empower researchers across diverse fields to uncover new phenomena and applications harnessing symmetry-protected non-Hermitian degeneracy points.

Online Action Recognition for Human Risk Prediction with Anticipated Haptic Alert via Wearables

This paper proposes a framework that combines online human state estimation, action recognition and motion prediction to enable early assessment and prevention of worker biomechanical risk during lifting tasks. The framework leverages the NIOSH index to perform online risk assessment, thus fitting real-time applications. In particular, the human state is retrieved via inverse kinematics/dynamics algorithms from wearable sensor data. Human action recognition and motion prediction are achieved by implementing an LSTM-based Guided Mixture of Experts architecture, which is trained offline and inferred online. With the recognized actions, a single lifting activity is divided into a series of continuous movements and the Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation can be applied for risk assessment. Moreover, the predicted motions enable anticipation of future risks. A haptic actuator, embedded in the wearable system, can alert the subject of potential risk, acting as an active prevention device. The performance of the proposed framework is validated by executing real lifting tasks, while the subject is equipped with the iFeel wearable system.

Incentivizing Investment and Reliability: A Study on Electricity Capacity Markets

The capacity market, a marketplace to exchange available generation capacity for electricity production, provides a major revenue stream for generators and is adopted in several U.S. regions. A subject of ongoing debate, the capacity market is viewed by its proponents as a crucial mechanism to ensure system reliability, while critics highlight its drawbacks such as market distortion. Under a novel analytical framework, we rigorously evaluate the impact of the capacity market on generators' revenue and system reliability. More specifically, based on market designs at New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), we propose market equilibrium-based models to capture salient aspects of the capacity market and its interaction with the energy market. We also develop a leader-follower model to study market power. We show that the capacity market incentivizes the investment of generators with lower net cost of new entry. It also facilitates reliability by preventing significant physical withholding when the demand is relatively high. Nevertheless, the capacity market may not provide enough revenue for peaking plants. Moreover, it is susceptible to market power, which necessitates tailored market power mitigation measures depending on market dynamics. We provide further insights via large-scale experiments on data from NYISO markets.

Redistributing the Precision and Content in 3D-LUT-based Inverse Tone-mapping for HDR/WCG Display

ITM(inverse tone-mapping) converts SDR (standard dynamic range) footage to HDR/WCG (high dynamic range /wide color gamut) for media production. It happens not only when remastering legacy SDR footage in front-end content provider, but also adapting on-theair SDR service on user-end HDR display. The latter requires more efficiency, thus the pre-calculated LUT (look-up table) has become a popular solution. Yet, conventional fixed LUT lacks adaptability, so we learn from research community and combine it with AI. Meanwhile, higher-bit-depth HDR/WCG requires larger LUT than SDR, so we consult traditional ITM for an efficiency-performance trade-off: We use 3 smaller LUTs, each has a non-uniform packing (precision) respectively denser in dark, middle and bright luma range. In this case, their results will have less error only in their own range, so we use a contribution map to combine their best parts to final result. With the guidance of this map, the elements (content) of 3 LUTs will also be redistributed during training. We conduct ablation studies to verify method's effectiveness, and subjective and objective experiments to show its practicability. Code is available at: https://github.com/AndreGuo/ITMLUT.

Edge Cloud Collaborative Stream Computing for Real-Time Structural Health Monitoring

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is crucial for the safety and maintenance of various infrastructures. Due to the large amount of data generated by numerous sensors and the high real-time requirements of many applications, SHM poses significant challenges. Although the cloud-centric stream computing paradigm opens new opportunities for real-time data processing, it consumes too much network bandwidth. In this paper, we propose ECStream, an Edge Cloud collaborative fine-grained stream operator scheduling framework for SHM. We collectively consider atomic and composite operators together with their iterative computability to model and formalize the problem of minimizing bandwidth usage and end-to-end operator processing latency. Preliminary evaluation results show that ECStream can effectively balance bandwidth usage and end-to-end operator computation latency, reducing bandwidth usage by 73.01% and latency by 34.08% on average compared to the cloud-centric approach.

Concealed Object Detection for Passive Millimeter-Wave Security Imaging Based on Task-Aligned Detection Transformer

Passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) is a significant potential technique for human security screening. Several popular object detection networks have been used for PMMW images. However, restricted by the low resolution and high noise of PMMW images, PMMW hidden object detection based on deep learning usually suffers from low accuracy and low classification confidence. To tackle the above problems, this paper proposes a Task-Aligned Detection Transformer network, named PMMW-DETR. In the first stage, a Denoising Coarse-to-Fine Transformer (DCFT) backbone is designed to extract long- and short-range features in the different scales. In the second stage, we propose the Query Selection module to introduce learned spatial features into the network as prior knowledge, which enhances the semantic perception capability of the network. In the third stage, aiming to improve the classification performance, we perform a Task-Aligned Dual-Head block to decouple the classification and regression tasks. Based on our self-developed PMMW security screening dataset, experimental results including comparison with State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) methods and ablation study demonstrate that the PMMW-DETR obtains higher accuracy and classification confidence than previous works, and exhibits robustness to the PMMW images of low quality.

Topological nature of non-Hermitian degenerate bands in structural parameter space

In photonics, band degeneracies at high-symmetry points in wavevector space have been shown to exhibit rich physical phenomena. However, obtaining degenerate bands away from such points is highly nontrivial. In this work, we achieve complex band degeneracy in a photonic crystal structure over a region of momentum space. We show that this band degeneracy corresponds to polarization-independent transmission, which can be harnessed for nonlocal metasurface design. Moreover, we find that the band degeneracy manifests as a topological singularity in the structural parameter space of the system. Our work highlights the importance of topological concepts in the design of polarization-independent photonic structures.
