PPDM: Parallel Point Detection and Matching for Real-time Human-Object Interaction Detection

We propose a single-stage Human-Object Interaction (HOI) detection method that has outperformed all existing methods on HICO-DET dataset at 37 fps on a single Titan XP GPU. It is the first real-time HOI detection method. Conventional HOI detection methods are composed of two stages, i.e., human-object proposals generation, and proposals classification. Their effectiveness and efficiency are limited by the sequential and separate architecture. In this paper, we propose a Parallel Point Detection and Matching (PPDM) HOI detection framework. In PPDM, an HOI is defined as a point triplet < human point, interaction point, object point>. Human and object points are the center of the detection boxes, and the interaction point is the midpoint of the human and object points. PPDM contains two parallel branches, namely point detection branch and point matching branch. The point detection branch predicts three points. Simultaneously, the point matching branch predicts two displacements from the interaction point to its corresponding human and object points. The human point and the object point originated from the same interaction point are considered as matched pairs. In our novel parallel architecture, the interaction points implicitly provide context and regularization for human and object detection. The isolated detection boxes are unlikely to form meaning HOI triplets are suppressed, which increases the precision of HOI detection. Moreover, the matching between human and object detection boxes is only applied around limited numbers of filtered candidate interaction points, which saves much computational cost. Additionally, we build a new application-oriented database named HOI-A, which severs as a good supplement to the existing datasets. The source code and the dataset will be made publicly available to facilitate the development of HOI detection.

GreedyNAS: Towards Fast One-Shot NAS with Greedy Supernet

Training a supernet matters for one-shot neural architecture search (NAS) methods since it serves as a basic performance estimator for different architectures (paths). Current methods mainly hold the assumption that a supernet should give a reasonable ranking over all paths. They thus treat all paths equally, and spare much effort to train paths. However, it is harsh for a single supernet to evaluate accurately on such a huge-scale search space (e.g., $7^{21}$). In this paper, instead of covering all paths, we ease the burden of supernet by encouraging it to focus more on evaluation of those potentially-good ones, which are identified using a surrogate portion of validation data. Concretely, during training, we propose a multi-path sampling strategy with rejection, and greedily filter the weak paths. The training efficiency is thus boosted since the training space has been greedily shrunk from all paths to those potentially-good ones. Moreover, we further adopt an exploration and exploitation policy by introducing an empirical candidate path pool. Our proposed method GreedyNAS is easy-to-follow, and experimental results on ImageNet dataset indicate that it can achieve better Top-1 accuracy under same search space and FLOPs or latency level, but with only $\sim$60\% of supernet training cost. By searching on a larger space, our GreedyNAS can also obtain new state-of-the-art architectures.

An Approach for Process Model Extraction By Multi-Grained Text Classification

Process model extraction (PME) is a recently emerged interdiscipline between natural language processing (NLP) and business process management (BPM), which aims to extract process models from textual descriptions. Previous process extractors heavily depend on manual features and ignore the potential relations between clues of different text granularities. In this paper, we formalize the PME task into the multi-grained text classification problem, and propose a hierarchical neural network to effectively model and extract multi-grained information without manually-defined procedural features. Under this structure, we accordingly propose the coarse-to-fine (grained) learning mechanism, training multi-grained tasks in coarse-to-fine grained order to share the high-level knowledge for the low-level tasks. To evaluate our approach, we construct two multi-grained datasets from two different domains and conduct extensive experiments from different dimensions. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with statistical significance and further investigations demonstrate its effectiveness.

CentripetalNet: Pursuing High-quality Keypoint Pairs for Object Detection

Keypoint-based detectors have achieved pretty-well performance. However, incorrect keypoint matching is still widespread and greatly affects the performance of the detector. In this paper, we propose CentripetalNet which uses centripetal shift to pair corner keypoints from the same instance. CentripetalNet predicts the position and the centripetal shift of the corner points and matches corners whose shifted results are aligned. Combining position information, our approach matches corner points more accurately than the conventional embedding approaches do. Corner pooling extracts information inside the bounding boxes onto the border. To make this information more aware at the corners, we design a cross-star deformable convolution network to conduct feature adaption. Furthermore, we explore instance segmentation on anchor-free detectors by equipping our CentripetalNet with a mask prediction module. On MS-COCO test-dev, our CentripetalNet not only outperforms all existing anchor-free detectors with an AP of 48.0% but also achieves comparable performance to the state-of-the-art instance segmentation approaches with a 40.2% MaskAP. Code will be available at https://github.com/KiveeDong/CentripetalNet.

Everybody's Talkin': Let Me Talk as You Want

We present a method to edit a target portrait footage by taking a sequence of audio as input to synthesize a photo-realistic video. This method is unique because it is highly dynamic. It does not assume a person-specific rendering network yet capable of translating arbitrary source audio into arbitrary video output. Instead of learning a highly heterogeneous and nonlinear mapping from audio to the video directly, we first factorize each target video frame into orthogonal parameter spaces, i.e., expression, geometry, and pose, via monocular 3D face reconstruction. Next, a recurrent network is introduced to translate source audio into expression parameters that are primarily related to the audio content. The audio-translated expression parameters are then used to synthesize a photo-realistic human subject in each video frame, with the movement of the mouth regions precisely mapped to the source audio. The geometry and pose parameters of the target human portrait are retained, therefore preserving the context of the original video footage. Finally, we introduce a novel video rendering network and a dynamic programming method to construct a temporally coherent and photo-realistic video. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method over existing approaches. Our method is end-to-end learnable and robust to voice variations in the source audio.

A Coarse-to-Fine Adaptive Network for Appearance-Based Gaze Estimation

Human gaze is essential for various appealing applications. Aiming at more accurate gaze estimation, a series of recent works propose to utilize face and eye images simultaneously. Nevertheless, face and eye images only serve as independent or parallel feature sources in those works, the intrinsic correlation between their features is overlooked. In this paper we make the following contributions: 1) We propose a coarse-to-fine strategy which estimates a basic gaze direction from face image and refines it with corresponding residual predicted from eye images. 2) Guided by the proposed strategy, we design a framework which introduces a bi-gram model to bridge gaze residual and basic gaze direction, and an attention component to adaptively acquire suitable fine-grained feature. 3) Integrating the above innovations, we construct a coarse-to-fine adaptive network named CA-Net and achieve state-of-the-art performances on MPIIGaze and EyeDiap.

QuanTI-FRET: a framework for quantitative FRET measurements in living cells

Foerster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) allows for the visualization of nanometer-scale distances and distance changes. This sensitivity is regularly achieved in single-molecule experiments in vitro but is still challenging in biological materials. Despite many efforts, quantitative FRET in living samples is either restricted to specific instruments or limited by the complexity of the required analysis. With the recent development and expanding utilization of FRET-based biosensors, it becomes essential to allow biologists to produce quantitative results that can directly be compared. Here, we present a new calibration and analysis method allowing for quantitative FRET imaging in living cells with a simple fluorescence microscope. Aside from the spectral crosstalk corrections, two additional correction factors were defined from photophysical equations, describing the relative differences in excitation and detection efficiencies. The calibration is achieved in a single step, which renders the Quantitative Three-Image FRET (QuanTI-FRET) method extremely robust. The only requirement is a sample of known stoichiometry donor:acceptor, which is naturally the case for intramolecular FRET constructs. We show that QuanTI-FRET gives absolute FRET values, independent of the instrument or the expression level. Through the calculation of the stoichiometry, we assess the quality of the data thus making QuanTI-FRET usable confidently by non-specialists.

FAB: A Robust Facial Landmark Detection Framework for Motion-Blurred Videos

Recently, facial landmark detection algorithms have achieved remarkable performance on static images. However, these algorithms are neither accurate nor stable in motion-blurred videos. The missing of structure information makes it difficult for state-of-the-art facial landmark detection algorithms to yield good results. In this paper, we propose a framework named FAB that takes advantage of structure consistency in the temporal dimension for facial landmark detection in motion-blurred videos. A structure predictor is proposed to predict the missing face structural information temporally, which serves as a geometry prior. This allows our framework to work as a virtuous circle. On one hand, the geometry prior helps our structure-aware deblurring network generates high quality deblurred images which lead to better landmark detection results. On the other hand, better landmark detection results help structure predictor generate better geometry prior for the next frame. Moreover, it is a flexible video-based framework that can incorporate any static image-based methods to provide a performance boost on video datasets. Extensive experiments on Blurred-300VW, the proposed Real-world Motion Blur (RWMB) datasets and 300VW demonstrate the superior performance to the state-of-the-art methods. Datasets and models will be publicly available at https://keqiangsun.github.io/projects/FAB/FAB.html.

Modeling and Designing Routing Protocols in Quantum Networks

Quantum networks enable a number of important applications such as quantum key distribution. The basic function of a quantum network is to enable long-distance quantum entanglement between two remote communication parties. This work focuses on the entanglement routing problem, whose objective is to build long-distance entanglements for the concurrent source-destination pairs through multiple hops. Different from existing works that analyzes the traditional routing techniques on special network topologies, we present a comprehensive entanglement routing model that reflects the differences between quantum networks and classical networks and new entanglement routing algorithms that utilize the unique properties of quantum networks. Evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm Q-CAST increases the number of successful long-distance entanglements by a big margin compared to other methods. The model and simulator developed by this work may encourage more network researchers to study the entanglement routing problem.

TRB: A Novel Triplet Representation for Understanding 2D Human Body

Human pose and shape are two important components of 2D human body. However, how to efficiently represent both of them in images is still an open question. In this paper, we propose the Triplet Representation for Body (TRB) -- a compact 2D human body representation, with skeleton keypoints capturing human pose information and contour keypoints containing human shape information. TRB not only preserves the flexibility of skeleton keypoint representation, but also contains rich pose and human shape information. Therefore, it promises broader application areas, such as human shape editing and conditional image generation. We further introduce the challenging problem of TRB estimation, where joint learning of human pose and shape is required. We construct several large-scale TRB estimation datasets, based on popular 2D pose datasets: LSP, MPII, COCO. To effectively solve TRB estimation, we propose a two-branch network (TRB-net) with three novel techniques, namely X-structure (Xs), Directional Convolution (DC) and Pairwise Mapping (PM), to enforce multi-level message passing for joint feature learning. We evaluate our proposed TRB-net and several leading approaches on our proposed TRB datasets, and demonstrate the superiority of our method through extensive evaluations.

BePT: A Behavior-based Process Translator for Interpreting and Understanding Process Models

Sharing process models on the web has emerged as a common practice. Users can collect and share their experimental process models with others. However, some users always feel confused about the shared process models for lack of necessary guidelines or instructions. Therefore, several process translators have been proposed to explain the semantics of process models in natural language (NL). We find that previous studies suffer from information loss and generate semantically erroneous descriptions that diverge from original model behaviors. In this paper, we propose a novel process translator named BePT (Behavior-based Process Translator) based on the encoder-decoder paradigm, encoding a process model into a middle representation and decoding the representation into NL descriptions. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that BePT satisfies behavior correctness, behavior completeness and description minimality. The qualitative and quantitative experiments show that BePT outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines.

Make a Face: Towards Arbitrary High Fidelity Face Manipulation

Recent studies have shown remarkable success in face manipulation task with the advance of GANs and VAEs paradigms, but the outputs are sometimes limited to low-resolution and lack of diversity. In this work, we propose Additive Focal Variational Auto-encoder (AF-VAE), a novel approach that can arbitrarily manipulate high-resolution face images using a simple yet effective model and only weak supervision of reconstruction and KL divergence losses. First, a novel additive Gaussian Mixture assumption is introduced with an unsupervised clustering mechanism in the structural latent space, which endows better disentanglement and boosts multi-modal representation with external memory. Second, to improve the perceptual quality of synthesized results, two simple strategies in architecture design are further tailored and discussed on the behavior of Human Visual System (HVS) for the first time, allowing for fine control over the model complexity and sample quality. Human opinion studies and new state-of-the-art Inception Score (IS) / Frechet Inception Distance (FID) demonstrate the superiority of our approach over existing algorithms, advancing both the fidelity and extremity of face manipulation task.

Aggregation via Separation: Boosting Facial Landmark Detector with Semi-Supervised Style Translation

Facial landmark detection, or face alignment, is a fundamental task that has been extensively studied. In this paper, we investigate a new perspective of facial landmark detection and demonstrate it leads to further notable improvement. Given that any face images can be factored into space of style that captures lighting, texture and image environment, and a style-invariant structure space, our key idea is to leverage disentangled style and shape space of each individual to augment existing structures via style translation. With these augmented synthetic samples, our semi-supervised model surprisingly outperforms the fully-supervised one by a large margin. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness of our idea with state-of-the-art results on WFLW, 300W, COFW, and AFLW datasets. Our proposed structure is general and could be assembled into any face alignment frameworks. The code is made publicly available at https://github.com/thesouthfrog/stylealign.

Deep Comprehensive Correlation Mining for Image Clustering

Recent developed deep unsupervised methods allow us to jointly learn representation and cluster unlabelled data. These deep clustering methods mainly focus on the correlation among samples, e.g., selecting high precision pairs to gradually tune the feature representation, which neglects other useful correlations. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering framework, named deep comprehensive correlation mining(DCCM), for exploring and taking full advantage of various kinds of correlations behind the unlabeled data from three aspects: 1) Instead of only using pair-wise information, pseudo-label supervision is proposed to investigate category information and learn discriminative features. 2) The features' robustness to image transformation of input space is fully explored, which benefits the network learning and significantly improves the performance. 3) The triplet mutual information among features is presented for clustering problem to lift the recently discovered instance-level deep mutual information to a triplet-level formation, which further helps to learn more discriminative features. Extensive experiments on several challenging datasets show that our method achieves good performance, e.g., attaining $62.3\%$ clustering accuracy on CIFAR-10, which is $10.1\%$ higher than the state-of-the-art results.

Concury: A Fast and Light-weighted Software Load Balancer

A load balancer (LB) is a vital network function for cloud services to balance the load amongst resources. Stateful software LBs that run on commodity servers provides flexibility, cost-efficiency, and packet consistency. However current designs have two main limitations: 1) states are stored as digests which may cause packet inconsistency due to digest collisions; 2) the data plane needs to update for every new connection, and frequent updates hurt throughput and packet consistency. In this work, we present a new software stateful LB called Concury, which is the first solution to solve these problems. The key innovation of Concury is an algorithmic approach to store and look up large network states with frequent connection arrivals, which is succinct in memory cost, consistent under network changes, and incurs infrequent data plane updates. The evaluation results show that the Concury algorithm provides 4x throughput and consumes less memory compared to other LB algorithms, while providing weighted load balancing and false-hit freedom, for both real and synthetic data center traffic. We implement Concury as a prototype system deployed in CloudLab and show that the throughput of Concury on a single thread can reach 62.5% of the maximum capacity of two 10GbE NICs and that on two threads can reach the maximum capacity.

Multilayer silicene: structure, electronics, and mechanical property

Herein, we performed first principle calculation and classical molecular dynamics simulation to study structural optimization, band structure, and mechanical properties of differently stacked multilayer silicene. Several local energy minima have been identified as metastable conformation with different stacking mode and layer number. Bandstructure of low buckled AA bilayer silicene optimized with SCAN+rvv10 presents semiconducting behavior with a bandgap of 0.4419ev. Young's modulus of multilayer silicene shows low dependency on layer number or stacking mode. Whereas, fracture stress and strain is sensitive to the number of layers, specific stacking mode, and chirality. Furthermore, bending modulus of multilayer silicene (e.g., 0.44ev for monolayer silicene) is even lower than that of graphene, which may attribute to the flexibility of bond angle.

TraceWalk: Semantic-based Process Graph Embedding for Consistency Checking

Process consistency checking (PCC), an interdiscipline of natural language processing (NLP) and business process management (BPM), aims to quantify the degree of (in)consistencies between graphical and textual descriptions of a process. However, previous studies heavily depend on a great deal of complex expert-defined knowledge such as alignment rules and assessment metrics, thus suffer from the problems of low accuracy and poor adaptability when applied in open-domain scenarios. To address the above issues, this paper makes the first attempt that uses deep learning to perform PCC. Specifically, we proposed TraceWalk, using semantic information of process graphs to learn latent node representations, and integrates it into a convolutional neural network (CNN) based model called TraceNet to predict consistencies. The theoretical proof formally provides the PCC's lower limit and experimental results demonstrate that our approach performs more accurately than state-of-the-art baselines.

Disentangling Content and Style via Unsupervised Geometry Distillation

It is challenging to disentangle an object into two orthogonal spaces of content and style since each can influence the visual observation differently and unpredictably. It is rare for one to have access to a large number of data to help separate the influences. In this paper, we present a novel framework to learn this disentangled representation in a completely unsupervised manner. We address this problem in a two-branch Autoencoder framework. For the structural content branch, we project the latent factor into a soft structured point tensor and constrain it with losses derived from prior knowledge. This constraint encourages the branch to distill geometry information. Another branch learns the complementary style information. The two branches form an effective framework that can disentangle object's content-style representation without any human annotation. We evaluate our approach on four image datasets, on which we demonstrate the superior disentanglement and visual analogy quality both in synthesized and real-world data. We are able to generate photo-realistic images with 256*256 resolution that are clearly disentangled in content and style.
