Stacked Intelligent Metasurface-Aided MIMO Transceiver Design

Next-generation wireless networks are expected to utilize the limited radio frequency (RF) resources more efficiently with the aid of intelligent transceivers. To this end, we propose a promising transceiver architecture relying on stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM). An SIM is constructed by stacking an array of programmable metasurface layers, where each layer consists of a massive number of low-cost passive meta-atoms that individually manipulate the electromagnetic (EM) waves. By appropriately configuring the passive meta-atoms, an SIM is capable of accomplishing advanced computation and signal processing tasks, such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding/combining, multi-user interference mitigation, and radar sensing, as the EM wave propagates through the multiple layers of the metasurface, which effectively reduces both the RF-related energy consumption and processing delay. Inspired by this, we provide an overview of the SIM-aided MIMO transceiver design, which encompasses its hardware architecture and its potential benefits over state-of-the-art solutions. Furthermore, we discuss promising application scenarios and identify the open research challenges associated with the design of advanced SIM architectures for next-generation wireless networks. Finally, numerical results are provided for quantifying the benefits of wave-based signal processing in wireless systems.

Learning Decentralized Traffic Signal Controllers with Multi-Agent Graph Reinforcement Learning

This paper considers optimal traffic signal control in smart cities, which has been taken as a complex networked system control problem. Given the interacting dynamics among traffic lights and road networks, attaining controller adaptivity and scalability stands out as a primary challenge. Capturing the spatial-temporal correlation among traffic lights under the framework of Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) is a promising solution. Nevertheless, existing MARL algorithms ignore effective information aggregation which is fundamental for improving the learning capacity of decentralized agents. In this paper, we design a new decentralized control architecture with improved environmental observability to capture the spatial-temporal correlation. Specifically, we first develop a topology-aware information aggregation strategy to extract correlation-related information from unstructured data gathered in the road network. Particularly, we transfer the road network topology into a graph shift operator by forming a diffusion process on the topology, which subsequently facilitates the construction of graph signals. A diffusion convolution module is developed, forming a new MARL algorithm, which endows agents with the capabilities of graph learning. Extensive experiments based on both synthetic and real-world datasets verify that our proposal outperforms existing decentralized algorithms.

Beamforming Design for the Distributed RISs-aided THz Communications with Double-Layer True Time Delays

In this paper, we investigate the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided terahertz (THz) communication system with the sparse radio frequency chains antenna structure at the base station (BS). To overcome the beam split of the BS, different from the conventional single-layer true-time-delay (TTD) scheme, we propose a double-layer TTD scheme that can effectively reduce the number of large-range delay devices, which involve additional insertion loss and amplification circuitry. Next, we analyze the system performance under the proposed double-layer TTD scheme. To relieve the beam split of the RIS, we consider multiple distributed RISs to replace an ultra-large size RIS. Based on this, we formulate an achievable rate maximization problem for the distributed RISs-aided THz communications via jointly optimizing the hybrid analog/digital beamforming, time delays of the double-layer TTD network and reflection coefficients of RISs. Considering the practical hardware limitation, the finite-resolution phase shift, time delay and reflection phase are constrained. To solve the formulated problem, we first design an analog beamforming scheme including optimizing phase shift and time delay based on the RISs' locations. Then, an alternatively optimization algorithm is proposed to obtain the digital beamforming and reflection coefficients based on the minimum mean square error and coordinate update techniques. Finally, simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

GMC-Pos: Graph-Based Multi-Robot Coverage Positioning Method

Nowadays, several real-world tasks require adequate environment coverage for maintaining communication between multiple robots, for example, target search tasks, environmental monitoring, and post-disaster rescues. In this study, we look into a situation where there are a human operator and multiple robots, and we assume that each human or robot covers a certain range of areas. We want them to maximize their area of coverage collectively. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the Graph-Based Multi-Robot Coverage Positioning Method (GMC-Pos) to find strategic positions for robots that maximize the area coverage. Our novel approach consists of two main modules: graph generation and node selection. Firstly, graph generation represents the environment using a weighted connected graph. Then, we present a novel generalized graph-based distance and utilize it together with the graph degrees to be the conditions for node selection in a recursive manner. Our method is deployed in three environments with different settings. The results show that it outperforms the benchmark method by 15.13% to 24.88% regarding the area coverage percentage.

Moving Object Localization based on the Fusion of Ultra-WideBand and LiDAR with a Mobile Robot

Localization of objects is vital for robot-object interaction. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) application in robotics is an emerging and widely used object localization technique due to its accurate distance measurement, long-range, wide field of view, and robustness in different conditions. However, LiDAR is unable to identify the objects when they are obstructed by obstacles, resulting in inaccuracy and noise in localization. To address this issue, we present an approach incorporating LiDAR and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) ranging for object localization. The UWB is popular in sensor fusion localization algorithms due to its low weight and low power consumption. In addition, the UWB is able to return ranging measurements even when the object is not within line-of-sight. Our approach provides an efficient solution to combine an anonymous optical sensor (LiDAR) with an identity-based radio sensor (UWB) to improve the localization accuracy of the object. Our approach consists of three modules. The first module is an object-identification algorithm that compares successive scans from the LiDAR to detect a moving object in the environment and returns the position with the closest range to UWB ranging. The second module estimates the moving object's moving direction using the previous and current estimated position from our object-identification module. It removes the suspicious estimations through an outlier rejection criterion. Lastly, we fuse the LiDAR, UWB ranging, and odometry measurements in pose graph optimization (PGO) to recover the entire trajectory of the robot and object. Extensive experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach.

Stacked Intelligent Metasurface Performs a 2D DFT in the Wave Domain for DOA Estimation

Staked intelligent metasurface (SIM) based techniques are developed to perform two-dimensional (2D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. In contrast to the conventional designs, an advanced SIM in front of the receiving array automatically performs the 2D discrete Fourier transform (DFT) as the incident waves propagate through it. To arrange for the SIM to carry out this task, we design a gradient descent algorithm for iteratively updating the phase shift of each meta-atom in the SIM to minimize the fitting error between the SIM's response and the 2D DFT matrix. To further improve the DOA estimation accuracy, we configure the phase shifts in the input layer of SIM to generate a set of 2D DFT matrices having orthogonal spatial frequency bins. Extensive numerical simulations verify the capability of a well-trained SIM to perform 2D DFT. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the SIM having an optical computational speed achieves an MSE of $10^{-4}$ in 2D DOA estimation.

SafeSpace MFNet: Precise and Efficient MultiFeature Drone Detection Network

The increasing prevalence of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, has generated a demand for reliable detection systems. The inappropriate use of drones presents potential security and privacy hazards, particularly concerning sensitive facilities. To overcome those obstacles, we proposed the concept of MultiFeatureNet (MFNet), a solution that enhances feature representation by capturing the most concentrated feature maps. Additionally, we present MultiFeatureNet-Feature Attention (MFNet-FA), a technique that adaptively weights different channels of the input feature maps. To meet the requirements of multi-scale detection, we presented the versions of MFNet and MFNet-FA, namely the small (S), medium (M), and large (L). The outcomes reveal notable performance enhancements. For optimal bird detection, MFNet-M (Ablation study 2) achieves an impressive precision of 99.8\%, while for UAV detection, MFNet-L (Ablation study 2) achieves a precision score of 97.2\%. Among the options, MFNet-FA-S (Ablation study 3) emerges as the most resource-efficient alternative, considering its small feature map size, computational demands (GFLOPs), and operational efficiency (in frame per second). This makes it particularly suitable for deployment on hardware with limited capabilities. Additionally, MFNet-FA-S (Ablation study 3) stands out for its swift real-time inference and multiple-object detection due to the incorporation of the FA module. The proposed MFNet-L with the focus module (Ablation study 2) demonstrates the most remarkable classification outcomes, boasting an average precision of 98.4\%, average recall of 96.6\%, average mean average precision (mAP) of 98.3\%, and average intersection over union (IoU) of 72.8\%. To encourage reproducible research, the dataset, and code for MFNet are freely available as an open-source project: github.com/ZeeshanKaleem/MultiFeatureNet.

Joint Power and 3D Trajectory Optimization for UAV-enabled Wireless Powered Communication Networks with Obstacles

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs) are promising technologies in 5G/6G wireless communications, while there are several challenges about UAV power allocation and scheduling to enhance the energy utilization efficiency, considering the existence of obstacles. In this work, we consider a UAV-enabled WPCN scenario that a UAV needs to cover the ground wireless devices (WDs). During the coverage process, the UAV needs to collect data from the WDs and charge them simultaneously. To this end, we formulate a joint-UAV power and three-dimensional (3D) trajectory optimization problem (JUPTTOP) to simultaneously increase the total number of the covered WDs, increase the time efficiency, and reduce the total flying distance of UAV so as to improve the energy utilization efficiency in the network. Due to the difficulties and complexities, we decompose it into two sub optimization problems, which are the UAV power allocation optimization problem (UPAOP) and UAV 3D trajectory optimization problem (UTTOP), respectively. Then, we propose an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II with K-means initialization operator and Variable dimension mechanism (NSGA-II-KV) for solving the UPAOP. For UTTOP, we first introduce a pretreatment method, and then use an improved particle swarm optimization with Normal distribution initialization, Genetic mechanism, Differential mechanism and Pursuit operator (PSO-NGDP) to deal with this sub optimization problem. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategies under different scales and settings of the networks.

Resource Scheduling for UAVs-aided D2D Networks: A Multi-objective Optimization Approach

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-aided device-todevice (D2D) networks have attracted great interests with the development of 5G/6G communications, while there are several challenges about resource scheduling in UAVs-aided D2D networks. In this work, we formulate a UAVs-aided D2D network resource scheduling optimization problem (NetResSOP) to comprehensively consider the number of deployed UAVs, UAV positions, UAV transmission powers, UAV flight velocities, communication channels, and UAV-device pair assignment so as to maximize the D2D network capacity, minimize the number of deployed UAVs, and minimize the average energy consumption over all UAVs simultaneously. The formulated NetResSOP is a mixed-integer programming problem (MIPP) and an NP-hard problem, which means that it is difficult to be solved in polynomial time. Moreover, there are trade-offs between the optimization objectives, and hence it is also difficult to find an optimal solution that can simultaneously make all objectives be optimal. Thus, we propose a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III with a Flexible solution dimension mechanism, a Discrete part generation mechanism, and a UAV number adjustment mechanism (NSGA-III-FDU) for solving the problem comprehensively. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the stability of the proposed NSGA-III-FDU under different scales and settings of the D2D networks.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Localization: Performance Analysis and Algorithm Design

The target sensing/localization performance is fundamentally limited by the line-of-sight link and severe signal attenuation over long distances. This paper considers a challenging scenario where the direct link between the base station (BS) and the target is blocked due to the surrounding blockages and leverages the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) with some active sensors, termed as \textit{semi-passive IRS}, for localization. To be specific, the active sensors receive echo signals reflected by the target and apply signal processing techniques to estimate the target location. We consider the joint time-of-arrival (ToA) and direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation for localization and derive the corresponding Cramér-Rao bound (CRB), and then a simple ToA/DoA estimator without iteration is proposed. In particular, the relationships of the CRB for ToA/DoA with the number of frames for IRS beam adjustments, number of IRS reflecting elements, and number of sensors are theoretically analyzed and demystified. Simulation results show that the proposed semi-passive IRS architecture provides sub-meter level positioning accuracy even over a long localization range from the BS to the target and also demonstrate a significant localization accuracy improvement compared to the fully passive IRS architecture.

Enhancing Near-Field Sensing and Communications with Sparse Arrays: Potentials, Challenges, and Emerging Trends

As a promising technique, extremely large-scale (XL)-arrays offer potential solutions for overcoming the severe path loss in millimeter-wave (mmWave) and TeraHertz (THz) channels, crucial for enabling 6G. Nevertheless, XL-arrays introduce deviations in electromagnetic propagation compared to traditional arrays, fundamentally challenging the assumption with the planar-wave model. Instead, it ushers in the spherical-wave (SW) model to accurately represent the near-field propagation characteristics, significantly increasing signal processing complexity. Fortunately, the SW model shows remarkable benefits on sensing and communications (S\&C), e.g., improving communication multiplexing capability, spatial resolution, and degrees of freedom. In this context, this article first overviews hardware/algorithm challenges, fundamental potentials, promising applications of near-field S\&C enabled by XL-arrays. To overcome the limitations of existing XL-arrays with dense uniform array layouts and improve S\&C applications, we introduce sparse arrays (SAs). Exploring their potential, we propose XL-SAs for mmWave/THz systems using multi-subarray designs. Finally, several applications, challenges and resarch directions are identified.

Massive Access of Static and Mobile Users via Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Protocol Design and Performance Analysis

The envisioned wireless networks of the future entail the provisioning of massive numbers of connections, heterogeneous data traffic, ultra-high spectral efficiency, and low latency services. This vision is spurring research activities focused on defining a next generation multiple access (NGMA) protocol that can accommodate massive numbers of users in different resource blocks, thereby, achieving higher spectral efficiency and increased connectivity compared to conventional multiple access schemes. In this article, we present a multiple access scheme for NGMA in wireless communication systems assisted by multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this regard, considering the practical scenario of static users operating together with mobile ones, we first study the interplay of the design of NGMA schemes and RIS phase configuration in terms of efficiency and complexity. Based on this, we then propose a multiple access framework for RIS-assisted communication systems, and we also design a medium access control (MAC) protocol incorporating RISs. In addition, we give a detailed performance analysis of the designed RIS-assisted MAC protocol. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MAC design outperforms the benchmarks in terms of system throughput and access fairness, and also reveal a trade-off relationship between the system throughput and fairness.

Performance Bounds for Near-Field Localization with Widely-Spaced Multi-Subarray mmWave/THz MIMO

This paper investigates the potential of near-field localization using widely-spaced multi-subarrays (WSMSs) and analyzing the corresponding angle and range Cramér-Rao bounds (CRBs). By employing the Riemann sum, closed-form CRB expressions are derived for the spherical wavefront-based WSMS (SW-WSMS). We find that the CRBs can be characterized by the angular span formed by the line connecting the array's two ends to the target, and the different WSMSs with same angular spans but different number of subarrays have identical normalized CRBs. We provide a theoretical proof that, in certain scenarios, the CRB of WSMSs is smaller than that of uniform arrays. We further yield the closed-form CRBs for the hybrid spherical and planar wavefront-based WSMS (HSPW-WSMS), and its components can be seen as decompositions of the parameters from the CRBs for the SW-WSMS. Simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy of the derived closed-form CRBs and provide further insights into various system characteristics. Basically, this paper underscores the high resolution of utilizing WSMS for localization, reinforces the validity of adopting the HSPW assumption, and, considering its applications in communications, indicates a promising outlook for integrated sensing and communications based on HSPW-WSMSs.

A Multi-Head Ensemble Multi-Task Learning Approach for Dynamical Computation Offloading

Computation offloading has become a popular solution to support computationally intensive and latency-sensitive applications by transferring computing tasks to mobile edge servers (MESs) for execution, which is known as mobile/multi-access edge computing (MEC). To improve the MEC performance, it is required to design an optimal offloading strategy that includes offloading decision (i.e., whether offloading or not) and computational resource allocation of MEC. The design can be formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which is generally NP-hard and its effective solution can be obtained by performing online inference through a well-trained deep neural network (DNN) model. However, when the system environments change dynamically, the DNN model may lose efficacy due to the drift of input parameters, thereby decreasing the generalization ability of the DNN model. To address this unique challenge, in this paper, we propose a multi-head ensemble multi-task learning (MEMTL) approach with a shared backbone and multiple prediction heads (PHs). Specifically, the shared backbone will be invariant during the PHs training and the inferred results will be ensembled, thereby significantly reducing the required training overhead and improving the inference performance. As a result, the joint optimization problem for offloading decision and resource allocation can be efficiently solved even in a time-varying wireless environment. Experimental results show that the proposed MEMTL outperforms benchmark methods in both the inference accuracy and mean square error without requiring additional training data.

A Transmit-Receive Parameter Separable Electromagnetic Channel Model for LoS Holographic MIMO

To support the extremely high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency requirements, and emerging applications of future wireless communications, holographic multiple-input multiple-output (H-MIMO) technology is envisioned as one of the most promising enablers. It can potentially bring extra degrees-of-freedom for communications and signal processing, including spatial multiplexing in line-of-sight (LoS) channels and electromagnetic (EM) field processing performed using specialized devices, to attain the fundamental limits of wireless communications. In this context, EM-domain channel modeling is critical to harvest the benefits offered by H-MIMO. Existing EM-domain channel models are built based on the tensor Green function, which require prior knowledge of the global position and/or the relative distances and directions of the transmit/receive antenna elements. Such knowledge may be difficult to acquire in real-world applications due to extensive measurements needed for obtaining this data. To overcome this limitation, we propose a transmit-receive parameter separable channel model methodology in which the EM-domain (or holographic) channel can be simply acquired from the distance/direction measured between the center-points between the transmit and receive surfaces, and the local positions between the transmit and receive elements, thus avoiding extensive global parameter measurements. Analysis and numerical results showcase the effectiveness of the proposed channel modeling approach in approximating the H-MIMO channel, and achieving the theoretical channel capacity.

Holographic MIMO Communications: Theoretical Foundations, Enabling Technologies, and Future Directions

Future wireless systems are envisioned to create an endogenously holography-capable, intelligent, and programmable radio propagation environment, that will offer unprecedented capabilities for high spectral and energy efficiency, low latency, and massive connectivity. A potential and promising technology for supporting the expected extreme requirements of the sixth-generation (6G) communication systems is the concept of the holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO), which will actualize holographic radios with reasonable power consumption and fabrication cost. The HMIMO is facilitated by ultra-thin, extremely large, and nearly continuous surfaces that incorporate reconfigurable and sub-wavelength-spaced antennas and/or metamaterials. Such surfaces comprising dense electromagnetic (EM) excited elements are capable of recording and manipulating impinging fields with utmost flexibility and precision, as well as with reduced cost and power consumption, thereby shaping arbitrary-intended EM waves with high energy efficiency. The powerful EM processing capability of HMIMO opens up the possibility of wireless communications of holographic imaging level, paving the way for signal processing techniques realized in the EM-domain, possibly in conjunction with their digital-domain counterparts. However, in spite of the significant potential, the studies on HMIMO communications are still at an initial stage, its fundamental limits remain to be unveiled, and a certain number of critical technical challenges need to be addressed. In this survey, we present a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in the HMIMO communications paradigm, with a special focus on their physical aspects, their theoretical foundations, as well as the enabling technologies for HMIMO systems. We also compare the HMIMO with existing multi-antenna technologies, especially the massive MIMO, present various...

Pilot Power Allocation for Channel Estimation in a Multi-RIS Aided Communication System

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that enables the customization of electromagnetic propagation environments in next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate the optimal pilot power allocation during the channel estimation stage to improve the ergodic channel gain of RIS-assisted systems under practical imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we commence by deriving an explicit closed-form expression of the ergodic channel gain of a multi-RIS-aided communication system that takes into account channel estimation errors. Then, we formulate the pilot power allocation problem to maximize the ergodic channel gain under imperfect CSI, subject to the average pilot power constraint. Then, the method of Lagrange multipliers is invoked to obtain the optimal pilot power allocation solution, which indicates that allocating more power to the pilots for estimating the weak reflection channels is capable of effectively improving the ergodic channel gain under imperfect CSI. Finally, extensive simulation results corroborate our theoretical analysis.
