Microscopic derivation of the one-dimensional constrained Euler equations

We provide a new existence result for weak solutions to the one-dimensional Euler equations with a maximal density constraint, corresponding to a unilateral constraint on the density. Such models arise in the description of congestion phenomena in compressible flows. Our approach is based on a microscopic approximation by a system of N solid particles of identical radius r, with 2r = 1/N . The particles move freely until collision, after which perfectly inelastic interactions are imposed, so that colliding particles stick together. At this level, the non-overlapping condition is encoded through Signorini-type constraints from contact mechanics. Passing to the limit as N $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$, we rigorously establish the connection between these microscopic Signorini conditions and the macroscopic unilateral constraint on the density, together with the associated sign condition on the congestion pressure. The analysis is carried out in a Lagrangian framework, which is natural at the microscopic level and relies at the macroscopic level on the monotone rearrangement associated with the density. A key ingredient of our result is a monotonicity property of the congested region, which allows us to reduce the dynamics to a first-order evolution in time.

Microscopic derivation of a one-dimensional lubrication model with roughness

We derive a hydrodynamic model for the motion of inertial particles with a spherical hard core, interacting through lubrication forces and pairwise repulsive forces. The repulsion arises from the assumption that each particle is surrounded by a thin rough layer of reduced permeability. We prove that, as the number of particles tends to infinity (and their size tends to 0), the microscopic dynamics converges to a macroscopic hydrodynamic model in which congestion effects are encoded directly into the macroscopic interaction forces, depending on a local critical density transported by the flow. In particular, we extend the work of Lefebvre-Lepot and Maury where non-inertial particles, submitted to only a lubrication force were considered, and present the convergence proof when inertial effects and roughness are taken into account.

Duality solutions to the hard-congestion model for the dissipative Aw-Rascle system

We introduce the notion of duality solution for the hard-congestion model on the real line, and additionally prove an existence result for this class of solutions. Our study revolves around the analysis of a generalised Aw-Rascle system, where the offset function is replaced by the gradient of a singular function, such as $\rho$ $\gamma$ n , where $\gamma$ $\rightarrow$ $\infty$. We prove that under suitable assumptions on the initial data, solutions to the Aw-Rascle system converge towards the so-called duality solutions, which have previously found applications in other systems which exhibit compressive dynamics. We also prove that one can obtain weak solutions to the limiting system under stricter assumptions on the initial data. Finally, we discuss (non-)uniqueness issues.

Hard-congestion limit of the p-system in the BV setting

This note is concerned with the rigorous justification of the so-called hard congestion limit from a compressible system with singular pressure towards a mixed compressible-incompressible system modeling partially congested dynamics, for small data in the framework of BV solutions. We present a first convergence result for perturbations of a reference state represented by a single propagating large interface front, while the study of a more general framework where the reference state is constituted by multiple interface fronts is announced in the conclusion and will be the subject of a forthcoming paper. A key element of the proof is the use of a suitably weighted Glimm functional that allows to obtain precise estimates on the BV norm of the front-tracking approximation.

Hard congestion limit of the dissipative Aw-Rascle system

In this study, we analyse the famous Aw-Rascle system in which the difference between the actual and the desired velocities (the offset function) is a gradient of a singular function of the density. This leads to a dissipation in the momentum equation which vanishes when the density is zero. The resulting system of PDEs can be used to model traffic or suspension flows in one dimension with the maximal packing constraint taken into account. After proving the global existence of smooth solutions, we study the so-called "hard congestion limit", and show the convergence of a subsequence of solutions towards a weak solution of an hybrid freecongested system. In the context of suspension flows, this limit can be seen as the transition from a suspension regime, driven by lubrication forces, towards a granular regime, driven by the contact between the grains.

Local and global well-posedness of one-dimensional free-congested equations

This paper is dedicated to the study of a one-dimensional congestion model, consisting of two different phases. In the congested phase, the pressure is free and the dynamics is incompressible, whereas in the non-congested phase, the fluid obeys a pressureless compressible dynamics. We investigate the Cauchy problem for initial data which are small perturbations in the non-congested zone of travelling wave profiles. We prove two different results. First, we show that for arbitrarily large perturbations, the Cauchy problem is locally well-posed in weighted Sobolev spaces. The solution we obtain takes the form (vs, us)(t, x -- x(t)), where x < x(t) is the congested zone and x > x(t) is the non-congested zone. The set {x = x(t)} is a free surface, whose evolution is coupled with the one of the solution. Second, we prove that if the initial perturbation is sufficiently small, then the solution is global. This stability result relies on coercivity properties of the linearized operator around a travelling wave, and on the introduction of a new unknown which satisfies better estimates than the original one. In this case, we also prove that travelling waves are asymptotically stable.

Traveling waves for the porous medium equation in the incompressible limit: asymptotic behavior and nonlinear stability

In this study, we analyze the behavior of monotone traveling waves of a one-dimensional porous medium equation modeling mechanical properties of living tissues. We are interested in the asymptotics where the pressure, which governs the diffusion process and limits the creation of new cells, becomes very stiff, and the porous medium equation degenerates towards a free boundary problem of Hele-Shaw type. This is the so-called incompressible limit. The solutions of the limit Hele-Shaw problem then couple "free dynamics" with zero pressure, and "incompressible dynamics" with positive pressure and constant density. In the first part of the work, we provide a refined description of the traveling waves for the porous medium equation in the vicinity of the transition between the free domain and the incompressible domain. The second part of the study is devoted to the analysis of the stability of the traveling waves. We prove that the linearized system enjoys a spectral gap property in suitable weighted $L^2$ spaces, and we give quantitative estimates on the rate of decay of solutions. The nonlinear terms are treated perturbatively, using an $L^\infty$ control stemming from the maximum principle. As a consequence, we prove that traveling waves are stable under small perturbations.

Partially congested propagation fronts in one-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

These notes are dedicated to the analysis of the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations. After a brief synthesis of the results obtained in [4] related to the existence and the asymptotic stability of partially congested profiles associated to the soft congestion Navier-Stokes system, we present a first local well-posedness result for the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations.

Existence and stability of partially congested propagation fronts in a one-dimensional Navier-Stokes model

In this paper, we analyze the behavior of viscous shock profiles of one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a singular pressure law which encodes the effects of congestion. As the intensity of the singular pressure tends to 0, we show the convergence of these profiles towards free-congested traveling front solutions of a two-phase compressible-incompressible Navier-Stokes system and we provide a refined description of the profiles in the vicinity of the transition between the free domain and the congested domain. In the second part of the paper, we prove that the profiles are asymptotically nonlinearly stable under small perturbations with zero integral, and we quantify the size of the admissible perturbations in terms of the intensity of the singular pressure.

Soft congestion approximation to the one-dimensional constrained Euler equations

This article is concerned with the analysis of the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with a singular pressure law, the so-called hard sphere equation of state. The result is twofold. First, we establish the existence of bounded weak solutions by means of a viscous regularization and refined compensated compactness arguments. Second, we investigate the smooth setting by providing a detailed description of the impact of the singular pressure on the breakdown of the solutions. In this smooth framework, we rigorously justify the singular limit towards the free-congested Euler equations, where the compressible (free) dynamics is coupled with the incompressible one in the constrained (i.e. congested) domain.

A convergent FV-FEM scheme for the stationary compressible Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we propose a discretization of the multi-dimensional stationary compressible Navier-Stokes equations combining finite element and finite volume techniques. As the mesh size tends to 0, the numerical solutions are shown to converge (up to a subsequence) towards a weak solution of the continuous problem for ideal gas pressure laws p($ρ$) = a$ρ$ $γ$ , with $γ$ > 3/2 in the three-dimensional case. It is the first convergence result for a numerical method with adiabatic exponents $γ$ less than 3 when the space dimension is three. The present convergence result can be seen as a discrete counterpart of the construction of weak solutions established by P.-L. Lions and by S. Novo, A. Novotn{ý}.

One-dimensional granular system with memory effects

We consider a hybrid compressible/incompressible system with memory effects introduced by Lefebvre Lepot and Maury (2011) for the description of one-dimensional granular flows. We prove a first global existence result for this system without additional viscous dissipation. Our approach extends the one by Cavalletti, Sedjro, Westdickenberg (2015) for the pressureless Euler system to the constraint granular case with memory effects. We construct Lagrangian solutions based on an explicit formula of the monotone rearrangement associated to the density and explain how the memory effects are linked to the external constraints imposed on the flow. This result is finally extended to a heterogeneous maximal density constraint depending on time and space.

Pressure Dependent Viscosity Model for Granular Media Obtained from Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

The aim of this article is to justify mathematically, in the two-dimensional periodic setting, a generalization of a two-phase model with pressure dependent viscosity first proposed by A. Lefebvre-Lepot and B. Maury to describe a system in one dimension of aligned spheres interacting through lubrication forces. This model involves an adhesion potential, apparent only on the congested domain, which keeps track of history of the flow. The solutions are constructed (through a singular limit) from a compressible Navier-Stokes system with viscosity and pressure both singular close to a maximal volume fraction. Interestingly, this study can be seen as the first mathematical connection between models of granular flows and models of suspensions. As a by-product of this result, we also obtain global existence of weak solutions for a system of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with pressure dependent viscosity, the adhesion potential playing a crucial role in this result.

Free/Congested Two-Phase Model from Weak Solutions to Multi-Dimensional Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

We approximate a two--phase model by the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a singular pressure term. Up to a subsequence, these solutions are shown to converge to a global weak solution of the compressible system with the congestion constraint studied for instance by P.L. Lions and N. Masmoudi [ Annales I.H.P., 1999]. The paper is an extension of the previous result obtained in one-dimensional setting by D. Bresch et al. [ C. R. Acad. Sciences Paris, 2014] to the multi-dimensional case with heterogeneous barrier for the density.
