ChartInsighter: An Approach for Mitigating Hallucination in Time-series Chart Summary Generation with A Benchmark Dataset

Effective chart summary can significantly reduce the time and effort decision makers spend interpreting charts, enabling precise and efficient communication of data insights. Previous studies have faced challenges in generating accurate and semantically rich summaries of time-series data charts. In this paper, we identify summary elements and common hallucination types in the generation of time-series chart summaries, which serve as our guidelines for automatic generation. We introduce ChartInsighter, which automatically generates chart summaries of time-series data, effectively reducing hallucinations in chart summary generation. Specifically, we assign multiple agents to generate the initial chart summary and collaborate iteratively, during which they invoke external data analysis modules to extract insights and compile them into a coherent summary. Additionally, we implement a self-consistency test method to validate and correct our summary. We create a high-quality benchmark of charts and summaries, with hallucination types annotated on a sentence-by-sentence basis, facilitating the evaluation of the effectiveness of reducing hallucinations. Our evaluations using our benchmark show that our method surpasses state-of-the-art models, and that our summary hallucination rate is the lowest, which effectively reduces various hallucinations and improves summary quality. The benchmark is available at https://github.com/wangfen01/ChartInsighter.

LAMOST medium-resolution spectroscopic survey of Galactic Open Clusters (LAMOST-MRS-O): An overview of survey plan and preliminary results

As part of the LAMOST medium-resolution spectroscopic survey, the LAMOST-MRS-O is a non-time domain survey that aims to perform medium-resolution spectral observations for member stars in the open cluster area. This survey plans to obtain the spectroscopic parameters such as radial velocity and metal abundances of member stars and provide data support for further study on the chemical and dynamical characteristics and evolution of open clusters in combination with Gaia data. We have completed the observations on ten open cluster fields and obtained 235184 medium-resolution spectra of 133792 stars. Based on the data analyzed of LAMOST DR11V1.1, for some clusters of particular concern, it is found that the sampling ratio of members stars with Gmag < 15 mag can reach 70%, which indicates that the LAMOST-MRS-O has reached our initial design goal.

Half a Million Binary Stars from the low resolution spectra of LAMOST

Binary stars are prevalent yet challenging to detect. We present a novel approach using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to identify binary stars from low-resolution spectra obtained by the LAMOST survey. The CNN is trained on a dataset that distinguishes binaries from single main sequence stars based on their positions on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Specifically, the training data labels stars with mass ratios between approximately 0.71 and 0.93 as intermediate mass ratio binaries, while excluding those beyond this range. The network achieves high accuracy with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.949 on the test set. Its performance is further validated against known eclipsing binaries (97% detection rate) and binary stars identified by radial velocity variations (92% detection rate). Applying the trained CNN to a sample of one million main sequence stars from LAMOST DR10 and Gaia DR3 yields a catalog of 468,634 binary stars, which are mainly intermediate mass ratio binaries given the training data. This catalog includes 115 binary stars located beyond 10 kpc from the Sun and 128 cross-matched with known exoplanet hosts from the NASA Exoplanet Archive. This new catalog provides a valuable resource for future research on the properties, formation, and evolution of binary systems, particularly for statistically characterizing large populations.

BlobGEN-Vid: Compositional Text-to-Video Generation with Blob Video Representations

Existing video generation models struggle to follow complex text prompts and synthesize multiple objects, raising the need for additional grounding input for improved controllability. In this work, we propose to decompose videos into visual primitives - blob video representation, a general representation for controllable video generation. Based on blob conditions, we develop a blob-grounded video diffusion model named BlobGEN-Vid that allows users to control object motions and fine-grained object appearance. In particular, we introduce a masked 3D attention module that effectively improves regional consistency across frames. In addition, we introduce a learnable module to interpolate text embeddings so that users can control semantics in specific frames and obtain smooth object transitions. We show that our framework is model-agnostic and build BlobGEN-Vid based on both U-Net and DiT-based video diffusion models. Extensive experimental results show that BlobGEN-Vid achieves superior zero-shot video generation ability and state-of-the-art layout controllability on multiple benchmarks. When combined with an LLM for layout planning, our framework even outperforms proprietary text-to-video generators in terms of compositional accuracy.

Autonomous Alignment with Human Value on Altruism through Considerate Self-imagination and Theory of Mind

With the widespread application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in human society, enabling AI to autonomously align with human values has become a pressing issue to ensure its sustainable development and benefit to humanity. One of the most important aspects of aligning with human values is the necessity for agents to autonomously make altruistic, safe, and ethical decisions, considering and caring for human well-being. Current AI extremely pursues absolute superiority in certain tasks, remaining indifferent to the surrounding environment and other agents, which has led to numerous safety risks. Altruistic behavior in human society originates from humans' capacity for empathizing others, known as Theory of Mind (ToM), combined with predictive imaginative interactions before taking action to produce thoughtful and altruistic behaviors. Inspired by this, we are committed to endow agents with considerate self-imagination and ToM capabilities, driving them through implicit intrinsic motivations to autonomously align with human altruistic values. By integrating ToM within the imaginative space, agents keep an eye on the well-being of other agents in real time, proactively anticipate potential risks to themselves and others, and make thoughtful altruistic decisions that balance negative effects on the environment. The ancient Chinese story of Sima Guang Smashes the Vat illustrates the moral behavior of the young Sima Guang smashed a vat to save a child who had accidentally fallen into it, which is an excellent reference scenario for this paper. We design an experimental scenario similar to Sima Guang Smashes the Vat and its variants with different complexities, which reflects the trade-offs and comprehensive considerations between self-goals, altruistic rescue, and avoiding negative side effects.

TPAoI: Ensuring Fresh Service Status at the Network Edge in Compute-First Networking

In compute-first networking, maintaining fresh and accurate status information at the network edge is crucial for effective access to remote services. This process typically involves three phases: Status updating, user accessing, and user requesting. However, current studies on status effectiveness, such as Age of Information at Query (QAoI), do not comprehensively cover all these phases. Therefore, this paper introduces a novel metric, TPAoI, aimed at optimizing update decisions by measuring the freshness of service status. The stochastic nature of edge environments, characterized by unpredictable communication delays in updating, requesting, and user access times, poses a significant challenge when modeling. To address this, we model the problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and employ a Dueling Double Deep Q-Network (D3QN) algorithm for optimization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed TPAoI metric effectively minimizes AoI, ensuring timely and reliable service updates in dynamic edge environments. Results indicate that TPAoI reduces AoI by an average of 47\% compared to QAoI metrics and decreases update frequency by an average of 48\% relative to conventional AoI metrics, showing significant improvement.

Who Saves us From Risk? Altruists Promote Cooperation in a Public Investment Game

Providing commons in the risky world is crucial for human survival, however, suffers more from the "free-riding" problem. Here, we proposed a solution that limits the access of the resource to an agent and tested its efficiency with a novel public investment game. On each trial, all group members invest in an agent responsible for a gamble and distribution. Resources are distributed evenly between non-agent group members after the agent extracts for him/herself. In 3 laboratory experiments (n = 704), we found that, as an agent, many participants extracted fewer resources than others. This altruistic distribution strategy improved cooperation levels. Furthermore, this cooperation-promoting effect could be spread to selfish agents who are in the same group as the altruistic agent and was replicated in a one-shot setting. We proposed that, when the commons are under risk, this distribution solution serves as a better alternative to the well-documented sanction solutions.

MM-Tracker: Motion Mamba with Margin Loss for UAV-platform Multiple Object Tracking

Multiple object tracking (MOT) from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms requires efficient motion modeling. This is because UAV-MOT faces both local object motion and global camera motion. Motion blur also increases the difficulty of detecting large moving objects. Previous UAV motion modeling approaches either focus only on local motion or ignore motion blurring effects, thus limiting their tracking performance and speed. To address these issues, we propose the Motion Mamba Module, which explores both local and global motion features through cross-correlation and bi-directional Mamba Modules for better motion modeling. To address the detection difficulties caused by motion blur, we also design motion margin loss to effectively improve the detection accuracy of motion blurred objects. Based on the Motion Mamba module and motion margin loss, our proposed MM-Tracker surpasses the state-of-the-art in two widely open-source UAV-MOT datasets. Code will be available.

Coherent3D: Coherent 3D Portrait Video Reconstruction via Triplane Fusion

Recent breakthroughs in single-image 3D portrait reconstruction have enabled telepresence systems to stream 3D portrait videos from a single camera in real-time, democratizing telepresence. However, per-frame 3D reconstruction exhibits temporal inconsistency and forgets the user's appearance. On the other hand, self-reenactment methods can render coherent 3D portraits by driving a 3D avatar built from a single reference image, but fail to faithfully preserve the user's per-frame appearance (e.g., instantaneous facial expression and lighting). As a result, none of these two frameworks is an ideal solution for democratized 3D telepresence. In this work, we address this dilemma and propose a novel solution that maintains both coherent identity and dynamic per-frame appearance to enable the best possible realism. To this end, we propose a new fusion-based method that takes the best of both worlds by fusing a canonical 3D prior from a reference view with dynamic appearance from per-frame input views, producing temporally stable 3D videos with faithful reconstruction of the user's per-frame appearance. Trained only using synthetic data produced by an expression-conditioned 3D GAN, our encoder-based method achieves both state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction and temporal consistency on in-studio and in-the-wild datasets. https://research.nvidia.com/labs/amri/projects/coherent3d

Temporal-spatial distribution of YSOs nearby Taurus region

The Taurus region is one of the most extensively studied star-forming regions. Surveys indicate that the young stars in this region are comprised of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) that cluster in groups associated with the molecular cloud (Grouped Young Stellar Objects, GYSOs), and some older ones that are sparsely distributed throughout the region (Distributed Young Stellar Objects, DYSOs). To bridge the age gap between the GYSOs ($\le$5 Myr) and the DYSOs (10-20 Myr), we conducted a survey to search for new YSOs in this direction. Based on infrared color excesses and Li I absorption lines, we identified 145 new YSOs. Combining these with the previously identified GYSOs and DYSOs, we constructed a sample of 519 YSOs that encompasses the entire region. Subsequently, we calculated the ages of the sample based on their proximity to the local bubble. The age versus Distance to the Local Bubble ($D_{\rm LB}$) relationship for the DYSOs shows a clear trend: the farther they are from the Local Bubble, the younger they are, which is consistent with the supernovae-driven formation scenario of the Local Bubble. The GYSOs also exhibit a mild age versus $D_{\rm LB}$ trend. However, they are significantly younger and are mostly confined to distances of 120 to 220 pc. Considering their distribution in the age versus $D_{\rm LB}$ space is well separated from the older DYSOs, they may also be products of the Local Bubble but formed in more recent and localized events.

Fine-Tuning Pre-trained Large Time Series Models for Prediction of Wind Turbine SCADA Data

The remarkable achievements of large models in the fields of natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV) have sparked interest in their application to time series forecasting within industrial contexts. This paper explores the application of a pre-trained large time series model, Timer, which was initially trained on a wide range of time series data from multiple domains, in the prediction of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data collected from wind turbines. The model was fine-tuned on SCADA datasets sourced from two wind farms, which exhibited differing characteristics, and its accuracy was subsequently evaluated. Additionally, the impact of data volume was studied to evaluate the few-shot ability of the Timer. Finally, an application study on one-turbine fine-tuning for whole-plant prediction was implemented where both few-shot and cross-turbine generalization capacity is required. The results reveal that the pre-trained large model does not consistently outperform other baseline models in terms of prediction accuracy whenever the data is abundant or not, but demonstrates superior performance in the application study. This result underscores the distinctive advantages of the pre-trained large time series model in facilitating swift deployment.

Empirical color correction to MIST and PARSEC isochrones on Gaia BR-RP and G-RP with benchmark open clusters

Recent literature reports a color deviation between observed Gaia color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and theoretical model isochrone predictions, particularly in the very low-mass regime. To assess its impact on cluster age determination via isochrone fitting, we quantified the color deviations for three benchmark clusters, Hyades, Pleiades, and Praesepe, both for the Gaia color (BP-RP) and (G-RP). In general, the (G-RP) color deviations are smaller than the (BP-RP) ones. Empirical color correction functions based on these benchmarks are derived for the currently available MIST and PARSEC 1.2S isochrone models. Applying the correction functions to 31 additional open clusters and 3 moving groups results in a significantly improved alignment between the isochrones and observed CMDs. With our empirical corrections, isochrones provide age estimates consistent with literature values obtained through the spectral Lithium Depletion Boundary method, validating the effectiveness of our approach. The corresponding metallicities with PARSEC 1.2S also show a good agreement with the spectroscopic results. The empirical color correction function we present in this work offers a tool for a consistent age determination within the full mass range of stellar clusters using the isochrone fitting method.

100 years of plastic -- using the past to guide the future

Robust and credible material flow data are required to support the ongoing efforts to reconcile the economic and social benefits of plastics with their human and environmental health impacts. This study presents a global, but regionalized, life cycle material flow analysis (MFA) of all plastic polymers and applications for the period 1950-2020. It also illustrates how this dataset can be used to generate possible scenarios for the next 30 years. The historical account documents how the relentless growth of plastic production and use has consistently outpaced waste management systems worldwide and currently generates on the order of 60 Mt of mismanaged plastic waste annually. The scenarios show that robust interventions are needed to avoid annual plastic waste mismanagement from doubling by 2050.

The Blue Horizontal-Branch Stars From the LAMOST Survey: Atmospheric Parameters

Blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars are crucial for studying the structure of the Galactic halo. Accurate atmospheric parameters of BHB stars are essential for investigating the formation and evolution of the Galaxy. In this work, a data-driven technique named stellar label machine (SLAM) is used to estimate the atmospheric parameters of Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope low-resolution spectra (LAMOST-LRS) for BHB stars with a set of A-type theoretical spectra as the training dataset. We add color indexes ($(BP-G), (G-RP), (BP-RP), (J-H)$) during the training process to constrain the stellar temperature further. Finally, we derive the atmospheric parameters ($T_\mathrm{eff}$, log\, $g$, [Fe/H]) for 5,355 BHB stars. Compared to existing literature results, our results are more robust, after taking the color index into account, the resulted precisoin of $T_\mathrm{eff}$, log\, $g$ is significantly improved, especially for the spectrum with low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). Based on the duplicate observations with a S/N difference $< 20\%$, the random errors are around 30\,K, 0.1~dex, and 0.12~dex for $T_\mathrm{eff}$, log\,$g$, [Fe/H], respectively. The stellar labels provided by SLAM are also compared to those from the high-resolution spectra in literature. The standard deviation between the predicted star labels and the published values from the high-resolution spectra is adopted as \sout{to} the statistical uncertainty of our results. They are $σ$($T_\mathrm{eff}$) = 76\,K, $σ$(log\,$g$) = 0.04~dex, and $σ$([Fe/H]) = 0.09~dex, respectively.

Bulk Crystal Growth and Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Phase Transitions in the Averievite CsClCu5V2O10

Quasi-two-dimensional averievites with triangle-kagome-triangle trilayers are of interest due to their rich structural and magnetic transitions and strong spin frustration that are expected to host quantum spin liquid ground state with suitable substitution or doping. Herein, we report growth of bulk single crystals of averievite CsClCu5V2O10 with dimensions of several millimeters on edge in order to (1) address the open question whether the room temperature crystal structure is P-3m1, P-3, P21/c or else, (2) to elucidate the nature of phase transitions, and (3) to study direction-dependent physical properties. Single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transitions at ~305 K and ~127 K were observed in the averievite CsClCu5V2O10 single crystals. The nature of the transition at ~305 K, which was reported as P-3m1-P21/c transition, was found to be a structural transition from high temperature P-3m1 to low temperature P-3 by combining variable temperature synchrotron X-ray single crystal and high-resolution powder diffraction. In-plane and out-of-plane magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements confirm a first-order transition at 305 K, a structural transition at 127 K and an antiferromagnetic transition at 24 K. These averievites are thus ideal model systems for a deeper understanding of structural transitions and magnetism.

Robust multimode interference and conversion in topological unidirectional surface magnetoplasmons

We have theoretically investigated surface magnetoplasmons (SMPs) in a yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) sandwiched waveguide. The dispersion demonstated that this waveguide can support topological unidirectional SMPs. Based on unidirectional SMPs, magnetically controllable multimode interference (MMI) is verified in both symmetric and asymmetric waveguides. Due to the coupling between the modes along two YIG-air interfaces, the asymmetric waveguide supports a unidirectional even mode within a single-mode frequency range. Moreover, these modes are topological protected when disorder is introduced. Utilizing robust unidirectional SMPs MMI (USMMI), tunable splitters have been achieved. It has been demonstrated that mode conversion between different modes can be realized. These results provide many degrees of freedom to manipulate topological waves.

Assessing the Association between the Globular Cluster NGC 4147 and the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy

The potential association of the globular cluster (GC) NGC 4147 with the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy has been proposed due to their comparable locations and radial velocities. However, there are still debates about this connection. In this study, we use data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Legacy Imaging Surveys to assess their association. We redetermine thefundamental parameters of NGC 4147 and find that the cluster is 11.0 Gyr old, has a metallicity of Z=0.0006, and is located 18.5 kpc from the Sun. We utilize the matched filter algorithm to identify extratidal structures in the surrounding sky of NGC 4147. The multiarmed tidal structures we find align more closely with the result of internal two-body relaxation processes within the cluster itself. The orientations of the dispersed tidal structures, the orbital direction of the cluster, and the mean orbital direction of Sgr do not show any apparent connection to each other. It seems to challenge the hypothesis of a common origin between the cluster and Sgr. To further investigate the association, we study the kinematics of NGC 4147 with the newly determined fundamental parameters. We find that the orbit, orbital energy, and angular momentum of NGC 4147 are not compatible with those of Sgr or its streams. This suggests that the cluster is not dynamically associated with Sgr. The morphology and dynamics of NGC 4147 are more consistent with it being a GC that formed with other origin rather than being accreted from the Sgr dwarf galaxy.

The Star Formation History of Nearby Galaxies: A Machine Learning Approach

Reproducing color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of star-resolved galaxies is one of the most precise methods for measuring the star formation history (SFH) of nearby galaxies back to the earliest time. The upcoming big data era poses challenges to the traditional numerical technique in its capacity to deal with vast amounts of data, which motivates us to explore the feasibility of employing machine learning networks in this field. In this study, we refine the synthetic CMD method with a state-of-the-art theoretical stellar evolution model to simulate the properties of stellar populations, incorporate the convolutional neural network (CNN) in the fitting process to enhance the efficiency, and innovate the initial stellar mass estimation to improve the flexibility. The fine-tuned deep learning network, named \texttt{SFHNet}, has been tested with synthetic data and further validated with photometric data collected from the Hubble Space Telescope (\textit{HST}). The derived SFHs are largely in accordance with those reported in the literature. Furthermore, the network provides detailed insights into the distribution of stellar density, initial stellar mass, and star formation rate (SFR) over the age-metallicity map. The application of the deep learning network not only measures the SFH accurately but also enhances the synthetic CMD method's efficiency and flexibility, thereby facilitating a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of nearby galaxies.
