How Temporal Dispersion of Radio Channels Depends on Signal Bandwidth

The degree of temporal dispersion of a radio channel is the basis for assessing its transmission capabilities. This paper addresses the practical issue of measuring the temporal parameters of a signal transmitted in the millimeter-wave (38 GHz) range. These parameters provide the basis for assessing the degree of dispersion of the received signal. The measurement results show that both the mean and RMS values of the delay spread depend on the distance between the transmitter and receiver as well as the bandwidth of the transmitted signals. The function description of these relationships (model) is determined based on a statistical analysis of the obtained measurement data obtained in a selected indoor corridor under line-of-sight conditions.

Assessing Temporal Dispersion of Time-Varying Channel at 38 GHz for Different Reference Signals

This paper investigates the influence of reference waveform selection on temporal dispersion estimation in a time-varying radio channel at 38 GHz. Three reference waveforms-numerically generated in MATLAB, measured through a conducted connection, and recorded in an anechoic chamber -are compared using the same wideband channel measurements conducted in a dynamic road environment. Their effects on the estimated power delay profiles (PDPs), mean delay, and root mean square (RMS) delay spread are evaluated. Despite noticeable differences in the time-domain and spectral characteristics of the reference waveforms, the resulting PDPs exhibit similar multipath structures, while the estimated temporal dispersion parameters show relatively small differences. The results indicate limited sensitivity to reference waveform selection under the investigated measurement conditions.

Sensitivity of RMS Delay Spread Estimation to Power Delay Profile Thresholding in Time-Varying Channels at 33 GHz

Root mean square (RMS) delay spread is a key parameter characterizing temporal dispersion in radio propagation channels. Its estimation from measured power delay profiles (PDPs), however, depends strongly on the adopted power threshold. This paper investigates the sensitivity of RMS delay spread estimates to relative PDP thresholding in a time-varying millimeter-wave channel at 33 GHz. The analysis uses wideband channel sounding measurements conducted in a dynamic road environment with moving vehicles. The temporal evolution and empirical cumulative distributions of RMS delay spread are evaluated for thresholds ranging from -20 to -50 dB. Reducing the threshold increases the median RMS delay spread from approximately 140 to 168 ns and the 90th percentile from 200 to 210 ns. Both statistics converge at lower thresholds, with -40 dB providing a practical convergence level. The results emphasize the importance of threshold selection for reliable channel characterization and consistent comparison of measurements.

Static Multipath Suppression in Power Delay Profile of Time-Varying Channel at 28 GHz

This paper investigates static multipath suppression in a time-varying radio channel at 28 GHz using wideband measurements conducted in a dynamic road environment. Two temporal differencing filters and three Doppler-domain notch filtering configurations are compared in terms of their effects on power delay profiles (PDPs) and root mean square (RMS) delay spread. The results demonstrate that all investigated methods effectively suppress stationary multipath components, improving the visibility of vehicle-related reflections. However, differences in filter frequency responses influence the relative powers of dynamic multipath components and the resulting RMS delay spread distributions. The findings highlight the importance of static multipath suppression and filter selection in characterizing time-varying propagation channels.
