Inflationary Cosmology as flow of integrable weights

We identify the algebra of gauge invariant observables in de Sitter as the subalgebra of the type $III_1$ factor $A_{dS}$, associated to de Sitter, defined as the centralizer of any integrable weight on $A_{dS}$. These algebras are for any integrable weight type $II_{\infty}$ factors admitting a crossed product representation with respect to modular automorphisms. In this context we define Inflationary Cosmology as the flow of integrable weights and the dual automorphism as the flow generator. Using some basic properties of integrable weights we show that any type $II_1$ dS algebra cannot be represented as the $\epsilon=0$ limit ( for $\epsilon$ the slow roll parameter ) of the gauge invariant algebra defined by any integrable weight. This strongly indicates that the pure dS algebra defined as the $\epsilon=0$ limit is algebraically non existent.

Duality and Black Hole Evaporation

We construct a model that describes the quantum black hole evaporation unitarily in a Hilbert space of infinite dimension. This construction generalizes Page's finite dimensional approach to infinite dimensions. The basic ingredient is the Murray-von Neumann coupling for finite type II factors. This coupling measures, at each time of the evaporation, the relative continuous dimension of the radiation and the black hole subspaces. The unitary transformation, implementing the quantum evaporation and thus determining the time dependence of the coupling, is identified with the dual modular automorphism. In the appendix we sketch, using von Neumann construction of infinite tensor products of EPR pairs of q-bits, some q-bit holographic correspondences as well as an algebraic definition of ER bridges.

The Algebraic Page Curve

The Page curve describing the process of black hole evaporation is derived in terms of a family, parametrized in terms of the evaporation time, of finite type II_1 factors, associated, respectively, to the entanglement wedges of the black hole and the radiation. The so defined Page curve measures the relative continuous dimension of the black hole and the radiation along the evaporation process. The transfer of information is quantitatively defined in terms of the Murray von Neumann parameter describing the change of the spatial properties of the factors during the evaporation. In the simplest case the generator of the evaporation process is defined in terms of the action of the fundamental group of the hyperfinite type II_1 factor. In this setup the Page curve describes a phase transition with the transfer of information as order parameter. We discuss the limits of either a type I or a type III description of the black hole evaporation.

On the algebraic meaning of quantum gravity for closed Universes

Assuming the von Neumann algebra associated with a generic de Sitter observer is properly infinite (type III) we use Connes cocycle to identify the unique ( up to unitary equivalence) background independent dominant weight on an extended algebra formally including an external observer. The background independent algebra defined as the centralizer of this dominant weight is equipped with a semi finite trace. Quantum gravity effects, as well as an algebraic version of the no boundary Hartle Hawking partition function, can be defined by representing, classically different de Sitter closed Universes, as equivalence classes of finite projections in the background independent algebra. The associated generalized entropy is determined by the value of the semi finite trace on each equivalence class of finite projections.

Traces and Time: a de Sitter Black Hole correspondence

We describe how general covariance for QFT defined on a space-time background with horizons leads to the need of adding an extra quantum degree of freedom. The definition of traces and entropies involves the use of a formally thermal state (weight) on the algebra of observables of the added degree of freedom. This extra degree of freedom is promoted into a physical clock after defining an hermitian and positive clock Hamiltonian. The so modified weight can be used to associate to both dS and the BH a type $II_1$ factor and a finite trace. The Murray-von Neumann dimension ( coupling constant) for this type $II_1$ description of the black hole naturally produces an algebraic version of Page's curve.

Clocks, Algebras and Cosmology

Gauge invariant local observables describing primordial scalar quantum fluctuations in Inflationary Cosmology are identified as elements of a type $II$ de Sitter crossed product algebra. This algebra is defined, after adding a reference frame clock, as the algebra of clock dressed local operators. Clock dressing sets, in the weak gravity limit, the Schrodinger equation for gauge invariant quantum fluctuations. Instead of using a slow roll inflaton potential to define the clock Hamiltonian and the clock state we suggest a natural double de Sitter clock making the whole algebra associated with the planar patch a type $II$ factor. The corresponding clock states are EPR squeezed states. Using this clock to define the needed clock dressing leads to concrete model independent predictions of the inflationary parameters. Some speculative remarks on potential ways to define a type $I$ upgrading are briefly discussed.

Cosmology as a Crossed Product

We suggest a new conceptual frame where inflationary Cosmology is quantum mechanically described using the Hilbert space representation of the crossed product of the type $III$ factor associated with the algebra of local operators on the de Sitter static patch and the automorphism of translations in the emergent conformal time. In this formal framework scalar curvature fluctuations are determined by the gravitational potential induced by the quantum variance of the generator of the conformal time automorphisms. Choosing as representative, in the Hilbert space of the crossed product, the effective vacuum state for each mode and conformal time, we evaluate the quantum variance and the induced scalar curvature fluctuations. This leads to a model independent characterization of the inflationary parameters (1-n_s) \sim 0.0318 and \epsilon\sim 0.0027 in good agreement with Planck experimental results. In this formal frame inflation extends the algebra of observables in a primordial dS expanding Universe. In this extension time evolution becomes an inner automorphism and the conjugated energy fluctuations manifest as the observable scalar curvature fluctuations.

The quantum de Sitter root of quasi de Sitter observables: a pedagogical review

In inflationary cosmology the quasi de Sitter graceful exit allows us to measure the quantum features of the primordial dS phase, in particular, the lack of scale invariance parametrized by the spectral index $n_s$. In this review we summarize previous work on how the underlying primordial scaling law is implemented in the dS quantum Fisher information of the dS planar ground state (dSQFI). At large scales the dSQFI unequivocally sets, without any qdS input, the value of $n_s$ to be $0.9672$. This value is independent of the tensor to scalar ratio whose value requires model dependent input. In addition the dSQFI predicts, at large scales, a small running compatible with the current experimental results. Other phenomenological consequences of the dSQFI for small scales, will be discussed in a future review.

Quantum Fisher Cosmology: Confronting Observations and the Trans-Planckian Problem

The aim of Quantum Fisher Cosmology is to use the quantum Fisher information about pure de Sitter states to derive model independent observational consequences of the existence of a primordial phase of the Universe of de Sitter accelerated expansion. These quantum features are encoded in a scale dependent quantum cosmological tilt that defines what we can call the de Sitter universality class. The experimental predictions are: i) A phase transition from red into blue tilt at a scale order $k= 1$ Mpc$^{-1}$ that naturally solves the cosmological trans-Planckian problem, ii) A spectral index for curvature fluctuations at CMB scales $k= 0.05$ Mpc$^{-1}$ equal to $0.0328$, iii) A tilt running at scale $k=0.002$ Mpc$^{-1}$ equal to $-0.0019$, iv) An enhancement of the amplitude of CMB peaks for extremely high multipoles ($l > 10^5$) that can provide a natural mechanism for primordial black hole formation as a source of dark matter, v) A lack of power at scales of $8$ Mpc with respect to the CMB scale that can explain the $\sigma_8$ tension.

Model Independent Prediction of the Spectral Index of Primordial Quantum Fluctuations

One of the most important achievements of inflationary cosmology is to predict a departure from scale invariance of the power spectrum for scalar curvature cosmological fluctuations. This tilt is understood as a consequence of a quasi de Sitter classical equation of state describing the inflationary dark energy dominated era. Here, following previous work, we find a departure of scale invariance for the quantum Fisher information associated to de Sitter vacuum for scalar quantum spectator modes. This gives rise to a purely quantum cosmological tilt with a well defined dependence on energy scale. This quantum tilt is imprinted, in a scale dependent energy uncertainty for the spectator modes. The effective quasi de Sitter description of this model independent energy uncertainty uniquely sets the effective quasi de Sitter parameters at all energy scales. In particular, in the slow-roll regime characterized by an almost constant $\epsilon$, the quantum Fisher -- model independent -- prediction for the spectral index is $(1-n_s) = 0.0328$ ($n_s=0.9672$). Moreover, the energy scale dependence of the quantum cosmological tilt implies the existence of a cosmological phase transition at energies higher than the CMB scale where the tilt goes from red into blue. This strongly suggest the existence of a pre-inflationary phase where the effective scalaron contributes to the spectral index as normal relativistic matter and where the corresponding growth of the power spectrum can result in dark matter in the form of small mass primordial black holes. The source and features of the quantum cosmological tilt leading to these predictions are determined by the entanglement features of the de Sitter vacuum states.

The quantum cosmological tilt and the origin of dark matter

A promising candidate for cold dark matter is primordial black holes (PBH) formed from strong primordial quantum fluctuations. A necessary condition for the formation of PBH's is a change of sign in the tilt governing the anomalous scale invariance of the power spectrum from red at large scales into blue at small scales. Non-perturbative information on the dependence of the power spectrum tilt on energy scale can be extracted from the quantum Fisher information measuring the energy dependence of the quantum phases defining the de Sitter vacua. We show that this non-perturbative quantum tilt goes from a red tilted phase, at large scales, into a blue tilted phase at small scales converging to $n_s=2$ in the UV. This allows the formation of PBH's in the range of masses $\lesssim 10^{20} gr$.

The Quantum Origin of Quasi de Sitter: a Model Independent Quantum Cosmological Tilt

The most robust prediction of inflationary cosmology is the existence of a red tilt for the spectrum of curvature fluctuations that is experimentally of order $0.04$. The tilt is derived solving the exact equation for quantum fluctuations in a quasi de Sitter background defined by a equation of state $\epsilon \equiv \frac{(p+\rho)}{\rho}$ with $\epsilon$ small but non vanishing. The experimental data selects among the different quasi de Sitter inflaton potentials. The origin of the lack of scale invariance associated with the tilt is however classical in essence and parametrized by the slow roll of the inflaton potential. Here we present a purely quantum mechanical and model independent derivation of the tilt. This derivation is based on two basic observations: first, the correlator for gauge invariant variables is related to the {\it quantum Fisher function} measuring the quantum dependence of the family of pure de Sitter vacua on the energy scale parameter; second, this quantum Fisher function has a non vanishing scale dependent red tilt that, at the energy scales of physical interest, fits the effective quasi de Sitter prediction as well as the experimental value. This is a result that is model independent and only based on the quantum features of the family of de Sitter vacua.

The information of the information paradox: On the quantum information meaning of Page curve

Page curve for the fine grained entropy of the black hole radiation is obtained once we include the effect of a non vanishing quantum Fisher information in the evaporation data. This quantum Fisher information scales as the inverse of the original black hole entropy. The modified fine grained entropy can be naturally related to a relative entanglement entropy with the quantum Fisher information defining the curvature at Page point.

Topological susceptibility and information theory

In this note we address the question of the $\theta$ dependence in non abelian gauge theories from a pure quantum information point of view. The main result is that the topological susceptibility is the quantum Fisher information of the ground state and that the maximally efficient quantum estimator of $\theta$ can be identified with the physical axion. In this setup the low energy dynamics of the axion is fully determined by quantum estimation theory.

How Gaussian can the Sky be? Primordial Non-Gaussianity from Quantum Information

Using the quantum information picture to describe the early universe as a time dependent quantum density matrix, with time playing the role of a stochastic variable, we compute the non-gaussian features in the distribution of primordial fluctuations. We use a quasi de Sitter model to compute the corresponding quantum Fisher information function as the second derivative of the relative entanglement entropy for the density matrix at two different times. We define the curvature fluctuations in terms of the time quantum estimator. Using standard quantum estimation theory we compute the non-gaussian features in the statistical distribution of primordial fluctuations. Our approach is model independent and only relies on the existence of a quasi de Sitter phase. We show that there are primordial non-gaussianities, both in the form of squeezed and equilateral shapes. The squeezed limit gives a value of $f_{\rm NL} \sim n_s-1$. In the equilateral limit we find that $f_{\rm NL} \sim 0.03$. The equilateral non-gaussianity is due to the non-linearity of Einstein's equation. On the other hand, the squeezed one is due to the quantum nature of clock synchronization and thus real and cannot be gauged away as a global curvature. We identify a new effect: {\it clock bias} which is a pure quantum effect and introduces a bias in the spectral tilt and running of the power spectrum of order $\sim 10^{-4}$, which could be potentially measurable and yield precious information on the quantum nature of the early Universe.

Dark matter from primordial quantum information

We suggest a general relation between the position of the cosmic microwave background temperature power spectrum peaks and the inflationary slow roll parameter $\epsilon$. This relation is based on interpreting the variable setting the position of the peaks as the quantum distance between the end of inflation and recombination. This distance is determined by the primordial cosmological Fisher information introduced in arXiv:2002.04294. The observational constraints set by cosmic microwave background temperature data lead to a very stringent prediction for the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio: $r=0.01 \pm 0.002$. Future polarization data of the cosmic microwave background should be able to measure this signal and corroborate or discard our model.

Cosmology from Quantum Information

We describe inflation in terms of a time dependent quantum density matrix with time playing the role of a stochastic variable. Using a quasi-de Sitter model we compute the corresponding quantum Fisher information function as the second derivative of the relative entanglement entropy for the density matrix at two different times. Employing standard quantum estimation theory we evaluate the minimal variance of quantum scalar fluctuations that reproduces the power spectrum and the corresponding tilt in the slow roll limit. The Jeffreys prior associated with such Fisher information can be used to define the probabilities on the set of initial conditions defined by the slow roll parameter $\epsilon$ and the initial Shannon information.

Thermalization, Ergodicity and Quantum Fisher Information

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis as well as the quantum ergodic theorem are studied in the light of quantum Fisher information. We show how global bounds on quantum Fisher information set the ETH and ergodicity conditions. Complexity and operator growth are briefly discussed in this frame.
