Stable vortex soliton arrays in disclination-fractal systems

Vortex light fields carry orbital angular momentum and have attracted significant attention because of their wide applications in light field manipulations, optical communications, and quantum information processing. In nonlinear media, the balance between diffraction and self-action enables the formation of vortex solitons. However, achieving the stability of vortex solitons remains challenging due to radial and azimuthal modulation instabilities. Here, we report stable vortex solitons and vortex-soliton arrays in disclination-fractal configurations with different rotational symmetries, constructed by applying disclination operations to fractal lattice structures. The stable vortex-soliton arrays---composed of several vortex solitons---can exist along domain walls, resulting from the disclination operation applied to the topologically trivial phase. Their stability is verified through both linear stability analysis and direct simulations of perturbed propagation. For comparison, vortex-soliton arrays in conventional disclination configurations are found to be completely unstable, demonstrating the significance of the fractal configuration in stabilizing these nonlinear states. These findings reveal a new nonlinear excitation mechanism arising from the interplay between fractal geometry and disclination defects, thereby providing theoretical underpinnings for both the improved understanding of multi-field excitation phenomena in complex geometric systems and opening new avenues for the design of photonic devices based on fractal disclination structures.

Orbital Altermagnetic Photonic Crystal

Altermagnetism features momentum-dependent spin splitting without net magnetization, extending spintronics beyond conventional ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. However, the photonic realization of altermagnetism has remained a formidable challenge due to the fundamental differences between fermionic electrons and bosonic photons. Here, we report the first experimental realization of an orbital altermagnetic photonic crystal, based on an antiunitary $C_{4z}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry enforced correspondence between a local $p$-orbital $\sigma/\pi$ doublet and crystal momentum. We experimentally demonstrate that the resulting system exhibits momentum-dependent spin splitting with alternating pseudospin polarization and a $d_{xy}$-wave form factor, as confirmed by measured band structures and iso-frequency contours. Moreover, we show that the orbital altermagnetic photonic crystal supports unique pseudospin-selective transport of electromagnetic waves, including photonic pseudospin splitting and pseudospin filtering. Our results extend the field of alternagnetism to photonic systems, opening a new avenue for designing spinphotonic devices.

Anomalous Topological Bloch Oscillations under Non-Abelian Gauge Fields

Topological Bloch oscillations are a hallmark of quantum transport phenomenon in which wavepackets undergo oscillatory motion driven by the interplay between an external force and topological edge states and serve as a powerful dynamical probe for the geometric properties of topological bands. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has also emerged as a crucial ingredient for manipulating quantum states in materials, with the corresponding gauge fields arising from the Rashba and Dresselhaus interactions. In this work, we investigate the propagation of spinor wavepackets in a honeycomb Zeeman lattice governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By tuning the relative strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus SOC, we engineer a non-Abelian gauge field that drives anomalous topological Bloch oscillations (ATBOs). Unlike conventional topological Bloch oscillation (TBOs), these ATBOs exhibit asymmetric motion, including a freezing effect in one half of the oscillation cycle, which can be tuned by the SOC parameters and external forces. Our findings establish SOC-based non-Abelian gauge fields as a powerful mechanism controlling topological quantum dynamics, with implications for spintronic devices and quantum data processing.

Hybrid Disclination Skin-topological Effects in Non-Hermitian Circuits

The bulk-disclination correspondence (BDC) is a fundamental concept in Hermitian systems that has been widely applied to predict disclination states. Recently, disclination states have also been observed and experimentally verified in non-Hermitian systems with C6 lattice symmetry, where gain and loss are introduced to induce non-Hermiticity. In this Letter, we propose a non-Hermitian two-dimensional (2D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) disclination model with skin-topological (ST) disclination states, and calculate its biorthogonal Zak phase. Together with the real-space disclination index, we predict the emergence of disclination states in a C4-symmetric non-Hermitian lattice and the corresponding fractional charge. We also generalize the symmetry indicator within the biorthogonal framework to predict the anomalous filling near the disclination core. Experimentally, the model is implemented on a nonreciprocal circuit platform, where we analyze the impedance matrix characterized by complex eigenfrequencies and directly observe the ST disclination states. Our work further extends the bulk-disclination correspondence to the non-Hermitian realm.

Observation of Custodial Chiral Symmetry in Memristive Topological Insulators

The concept of custodial symmetry, a residual symmetry that protects physical observables from large quantum corrections, has been a cornerstone of high-energy physics, but its experimental observation has remained unexplored. Building on recent theoretical work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 097701 (2022)], we report the first experimental observation of classical analog of custodial chiral symmetry in a memristive Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) circuit. We provide direct experimental evidence for custodial symmetry through the measurement of the correction to the Lagrangian. This Lagrangian correction, which mimics a mass term in field theory, vanishes smoothly as the perturbation is reduced. We also demonstrate that topological edge states in the memristive SSH circuit remain localized at the boundary, protected by custodial chiral symmetry. This work opens new avenues for emulating field-theoretic symmetries and nonlinear dynamics in memristive platforms.

Observation of nonlinear higher-order topological insulators with unconventional boundary truncations

In higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), topologically nontrivial phases are usually associated with the shift of Wannier centers to topologically nontrivial positions on the edges of the unit cells, and the emergence of fractional spectral charges in the corners of the lattice upon its truncation that keeps the number of its unit cells integer. Here we propose theoretically and illustrate experimentally a different approach to the construction of HOTIs. This approach utilizes lattices with incomplete unit cells and achieves localized modes of topological origin across a broader parameter space. When truncation disrupts translational symmetry by cutting through the interior of multiple unit cells, boundary modes in our system emerge for both trivial and topologically nontrivial positions of the Wannier centers. We link these modes to the appearance of fractional Wannier centers. We also demonstrate that linear boundary states give rise to rich families of stable solitons bifurcating from them in the presence of focusing nonlinearity. Multiple types of thresholdless topological solitons with different internal symmetries are observed in waveguide arrays with triangular configurations featuring incomplete unit cells for any dimerization of waveguide spacings. Our results expand the family of HOTIs and pave the way for the observation of boundary states with different symmetries.

Deep-Learning-Empowered Programmable Topolectrical Circuits

Topolectrical circuits provide a versatile platform for exploring and simulating modern physical models. However, existing approaches suffer from incomplete programmability and ineffective feature prediction and control mechanisms, hindering the investigation of physical phenomena on an integrated platform and limiting their translation into practical applications. Here, we present a deep learning empowered programmable topolectrical circuits (DLPTCs) platform for physical modeling and analysis. By integrating fully independent, continuous tuning of both on site and off site terms of the lattice Hamiltonian, physics graph informed inverse state design, and immediate hardware verification, our system bridges the gap between theoretical modeling and practical realization. Through flexible control and adiabatic path engineering, we experimentally observe the boundary states without global symmetry in higher order topological systems, their adiabatic phase transitions, and the flat band like characteristic corresponding to Landau levels in the circuit. Incorporating a physics graph informed mechanism with a generative AI model for physics exploration, we realize arbitrary, position controllable on board Anderson localization, surpassing conventional random localization. Utilizing this unique capability with high fidelity hardware implementation, we further demonstrate a compelling cryptographic application: hash based probabilistic information encryption by leveraging Anderson localization with extensive disorder configurations, enabling secure delivery of full ASCII messages.

Observation of nonlinear topological corner states originating from different spectral charges

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) are unique topological materials supporting edge states with the dimensionality at least by two lower than the dimensionality of the underlying structure. HOTIs were observed on lattices with different symmetries, but only in geometries, where truncation of HOTI produces a finite structure with the same order of discrete rotational symmetry as that of the unit cell, thereby setting the geometry of insulator edge. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new type of two-dimensional (2D) HOTI based on the Kekule-patterned lattice, whose order of discrete rotational symmetry differs from that of the unit cells of the constituent honeycomb lattice, with hybrid boundaries that help to produce all three possible corners that support effectively 0D corner states of topological origin, especially the one associated with spectral charge 5/6. We also show that linear corner states give rise to rich families of stable hybrid nonlinear corner states bifurcating from them in the presence of focusing nonlinearity of the material. Such new types of nonlinear corner states are observed in hybrid HOTI inscribed in transparent nonlinear dielectric using fs-laser writing technique. Our results complete the class of HOTIs and open the way to observation of topological states with new internal structure and symmetry.

Free Extension of Topological States via Double-zero-index Media

Topological states, known for their robustness against disorder, offer promising avenues for disorder-resistant devices. However, their intrinsic spatial confinement at interfaces imposes geometric constraints that limit the scalability of topological functionalities. Here, we propose a strategy to overcome this limitation by using double-zero-index media to expand topological interfaces. Although occupying finite space, these media are optically equivalent to infinitesimal points, effectively altering the geometry of topological interfaces and breaking conventional bulk-edge correspondence. This strategy enables the spatial expansion of uniform topological states beyond their native interface, offering new possibilities for topological photonic devices. We have verified this behavior through numerical simulations and microwave experiments in a two-dimensional photonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice. Our findings offer a universal framework to overcome the inherent dimensional limitations of topological states, with implications extending to general wave systems such as acoustic metamaterials.

Terahertz frequency conversion at plasma-induced time boundary

We report on the frequency conversions of terahertz (THz) waves at ultrafast time boundaries created via femtosecond laser-induced air-to-plasma phase transitions. Our combined experimental and theoretical approach reveals that the abrupt change in refractive index at the ultrafast time boundaries drives both the red and blue shifts over the broadband THz spectrum due to the dispersive plasma, with distinctive amplitude variations. The present study contrasts these effects with those from spatial boundaries, highlighting the superior efficacy of temporal manipulations for spectral engineering. These findings not only deepen the understanding of light-matter interactions in time-varying media but also pave the way for innovative applications in THz technology and lay the groundwork for the observation of temporal reflection effects, photonic time crystals, and spatio-temporally modulated matter.

Three-dimensional topological disclination in acoustic crystals

Topological disclinations, crystallographic defects that break rotation lattice symmetry, have attracted great interest and exhibited wide applications in cavities, waveguides, and lasers. However, topological disclinations have thus far been predominantly restricted to two-dimensional (2D) systems owing to the substantial challenges in constructing such defects in three-dimensional (3D) systems and characterizing their topological features. Here we report the theoretical proposal and experimental demonstration of a 3D topological disclination that exhibits fractional (1/2) charge and zero-dimensional (0D) topological bound states, realized by cutting-and-gluing a 3D acoustic topological crystalline insulator. Using acoustic pump-probe measurements, we directly observe 0D topological disclination states at the disclination core, consistent with the tight-binding model and full-wave simulation results. Our results extend the research frontier of topological disclinations and open a new paradigm for exploring the interplay between momentum-space band topology and the real-space defect topology in 3D and higher dimensions.

Nonlinear topological edge states, topological gap solitons, and self-induced topological edge states in nonlinear Su-Schrieffer-Heeger circuit lattices

Topological edge states typically arise at the boundaries of topologically nontrivial structures or at interfaces between regions with different topological invariants. When topological systems are extended into the nonlinear regime, linear topological edge states bifurcate into nonlinear counterparts, and topological gap solitons emerge in the bulk of the structures. Extensive studies of nonlinear topological edge states and topological gap solitons have been carried out. Following recent experimental observations in photonic systems, we leverage the strong and tunable nonlinearity of electric circuits and systematically investigate the localized states in nonlinear Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) circuit lattices. Besides revisiting the nonlinear topological edge states and topological gap solitons, we uncover a new type of self-induced topological edge states which exhibit the hallmark features of linear topological edge states, including sublattice polarization, phase jumps, and decaying tails that approach zero. A distinctive feature of these states is the boundary-induced power threshold for existence. Our work unveils new opportunities for exploring novel nonlinear topological states, and paves the way for the development of nonlinear topological circuits.

Octupole topological insulating phase in Brillouin three-dimensional real projective space

Recent advancements in quantum polarization theory have propelled the exploration of topological insulators (TIs) into the realm of higher-order systems, leading to the study of the celebrated two-dimensional (2D) quadrupole and three-dimensional (3D) octupole TIs. Traditionally, these topological phases have been associated with the toroidal topology of the conventional Brillouin zone (BZ). This Letter reports on the discovery of a novel octupole topological insulating phase emerging within the framework of the Brillouin 3D real projective space ($\mathbb{RP}^3$). We theoretically propose the model and its corresponding topological invariant, experimentally construct this insulator within a topological circuit framework, and capture the octupole insulating phase as a localized impedance peak at the circuit's corner. Furthermore, our $\mathbb{RP}^3$ circuit stands out as a pioneering 3D model to simultaneously exhibit both intrinsic, termination-independent symmetry-protected topological phases (SPTPs) and extrinsic, termination-dependent boundary-obstructed topological phases (BOTPs), which broadly encompass 2D surface-obstructed topological phases (SOTPs) and 1D hinge-obstructed topological phases (HOTPs). Our results broaden the topological landscape and provide insights into the band theory within the manifold of the Brillouin $\mathbb{RP}^3$.

Chiral bulk solitons in photonic graphene with decorated boundaries

We propose a chiral bulk soliton in a nonlinear photonic lattice with decorated boundaries, presenting a novel approach to manipulate photonic transport without extensive bulk modifications. Unlike traditional methods that rely on topological edge and corner modes, our strategy leverages the robust chiral propagation of bulk modes. By introducing nonlinearity into the system, we find a stable bulk soliton, akin to the topological valley Hall effects. The chiral bulk soliton exhibits remarkable stability; the energy does not decay even after a long-distance propagation; and the corresponding Fourier spectrum confirms the absence of inter-valley scattering indicating a valley-locking property. Our findings not only contribute to the fundamental understanding of nonlinear photonic systems but also hold significant practical implications for the design and optimization of photonic devices.

Observation of tunable topological polaritons in a cavity waveguide

Topological polaritons characterized by light-matter interactions have become a pivotal platform in exploring new topological phases of matter. Recent theoretical advances unveiled a novel mechanism for tuning topological phases of polaritons by modifying the surrounding photonic environment (light-matter interactions) without altering the lattice structure. Here, by embedding a dimerized chain of microwave helical resonators (electric dipole emitters) in a metallic cavity waveguide, we report the pioneering observation of tunable topological phases of polaritons by varying the cavity width which governs the surrounding photonic environment and the strength of light-matter interactions. Moreover, we experimentally identified a new type of topological phase transition which includes three non-coincident critical points in the parameter space: the closure of the polaritonic bandgap, the transition of the Zak phase, and the hybridization of the topological edge states with the bulk states. These results reveal some remarkable and uncharted properties of topological matter when strongly coupled to light and provide an innovative design principle for tunable topological photonic devices.

Observation of period-doubling Bloch oscillations

Bloch oscillations refer to the periodic oscillation of a wavepacket in a lattice under a constant force. Typically, the oscillation has a fundamental period that corresponds to the wavepacket traversing the first Brillouin zone once. Here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, the optical Bloch oscillations where the wavepacket must traverse the first Brillouin zone twice to complete a full cycle, resulting in a period of oscillation that is two times longer than that of usual Bloch oscillations. The unusual Bloch oscillations arise due to the band crossing of valley-Hall topological edge states at the Brillouin boundary for zigzag domain walls between two staggered honeycomb lattices with inverted on-site energy detuning, which are protected by the glide-reflection symmetry of the underlying structures. Our work sheds light on the direct detection of band crossings resulting from intrinsic symmetries that extend beyond the fundamental translational symmetry in topological systems.

Vortex solitons in topological disclination lattices

The existence of thresholdless vortex solitons trapped at the core of disclination lattices that realize higher-order topological insulators is reported. The study demonstrates the interplay between nonlinearity and higher-order topology in these systems, as the vortex state in the disclination lattice bifurcates from its linear topological counterpart, while the position of its propagation constant within the bandgap and localization can be controlled by its power. It is shown that vortex solitons are characterized by strong field confinement at the disclination core due to their topological nature, leading to enhanced stability. Simultaneously, the global discrete rotational symmetry of the disclination lattice imposes restrictions on the maximal possible topological charge of such vortex solitons. The results illustrate the strong stabilizing action that topologically nontrivial structures may exert on excited soliton states, opening new prospects for soliton-related applications.

Brillouin Klein space and half-turn space in three-dimensional acoustic crystals

The Bloch band theory and Brillouin zone (BZ) that characterize wave behaviors in periodic mediums are two cornerstones of contemporary physics ranging from condensed matter to topological physics. Recent theoretical breakthrough revealed that, under the projective symmetry algebra enforced by artificial gauge fields, the usual two-dimensional (2D) BZ (orientable Brillouin two-torus) can be fundamentally modified to a non-orientable Brillouin Klein bottle with radically distinct topology and novel topological phases. However, the physical consequence of artificial gauge fields on the more general three-dimensional (3D) BZ (orientable Brillouin three-torus) was so far missing. Here, we report the first theoretical discovery and experimental observation of non-orientable Brillouin Klein space and orientable Brillouin half-turn space in a 3D acoustic crystal with artificial gauge fields. We experimentally identify peculiar 3D momentum-space non-symmorphic screw rotation and glide reflection symmetries in the measured band structures. Moreover, we demonstrate a novel 3D Klein bottle insulator featuring a nonzero Z_2 topological invariant and self-collimated topological surface states at two opposite surfaces related by a nonlocal twist, radically distinct from all previous topological insulators. Our discovery not only fundamentally modifies the 3D Bloch band theory and 3D BZ, but also opens the door towards a wealth of previously overlooked momentum-space topologies and unexplored topological physics with gauge symmetry beyond the existing paradigms.
