Kähler-Ricci solitons with almost maximal symmetry

This paper studies a non-trivial gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton, of complex dimension $n$, with an isometry group of dimension at least $n^2-1$. We show that the isometry group acts by cohomogeneity one and, consequently, admits a special ansatz involving a Sasakian model. In complex dimension two, we can actually say more: namely, that every such soliton has maximal symmetry; that is, the isometry group is exactly of dimension $2^2$. In addition, we prove that, if the isometry group acts by cohomogeneity one on a non-trivial gradient Ricci soliton (not necessarily Kähler), the potential function is invariant by the action.

$\mathbb{Z}_p$-torus actions on positively curved manifolds

In this article, we study closed, positively curved $n$-manifolds that admit an effective, isometric $\mathbb{Z}_p^r$-action with a fixed point, where $p$ is an odd prime. For all sufficiently large $n$, we obtain a symmetry-rank bound in Theorem A that improves the $3n/8$ bound of Fang and Rong and of Ghazawneh. We improve on this bound for small odd primes $3\leq p\leq 19$ in Theorem B. One of our main tools comes from the theory of error-correcting codes and is of independent interest: we derive a finite-length Plotkin bound and a finite-length Elias-Bassalygo bound for $q$-ary codes and show that the finite-length Plotkin bound is asymptotically sharper for all primes $p \ge 23$.

Lengths of Orthogonal Geodesic Chords on Riemannian Manifolds

Let $N$ be a closed submanifold of a complete manifold, $M$. Then under certain topological conditions, there exists an orthogonal geodesic chord beginning and ending in $N$. In this paper we establish an upper bound for the length of such a geodesic chord in terms of geometric bounds on $M$. For example, if $N$ is a $2$-dimensional sphere embedded in a closed Riemannian $n$-manifold, then there exists an orthogonal geodesic chord in $M$ with endpoints on $N$ that has length at most $$ (4d+96D +8232\sqrt{A})(2n+1) $$ where $d$ is the diameter of $M$, and $A$ and $D$ are the area and intrinsic diameter of $N$, respectively.

On Fixed-Point Sets of $\Z_2$-Tori in Positive Curvature

In recent work of Kennard, Khalili Samani, and the last author, they generalize the Half-Maximal Symmetry Rank result of Wilking for torus actions on positively curved manifolds to $\mathbb{Z}_2$-tori with a fixed point. They show that if the rank is approximately one-fourth of the dimension of the manifold, then fixed point set components of small co-rank subgroups of the $\Z_2$-torus are homotopy equivalent to spheres, real projective spaces, complex projective spaces, or lens spaces. In this paper, we lower the bound on the rank of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus to approximately $n/6$ and $n/8$ and are able to classify either the integral cohomology ring or the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-cohomology ring, respectively, of the fixed point set of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus.

Linear Bounds for the Lengths of Geodesics on Manifolds With Curvature Bounded Below

Let $M$ be a simply connected Riemannian manifold in $\mathscr{M}_{k,v}^D(n)$, the space of closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension $n$ with sectional curvature bounded below by $k$, volume bounded below by $v$, and diameter bounded above by $D$. Let $c$ be the smallest positive real number such that any closed curve of length at most $2d$ can be contracted to a point over curves of length at most $cd$, where $d$ is the diameter of $M$. In this paper, we show that under these hypotheses there exists a computable rational function, $G(n,k,v,D)$, such that any continuous map of $S^l$ to $Ω_{p,q}M$, the space of piecewise differentiable curves on $M$ connecting $p$ and $q$, is homotopic to a map whose image consists of curves of length at most $\exp(c\exp(G(n,k,v,D))$. In particular, for any points $p,q \in M$ and any integer $m>0$ there exist at least $m$ geodesics connecting $p$ and $q$ of length at most $m\exp(c\exp(G(n,k,v,D))$.

Positive curvature and discrete abelian symmetry

By replacing the torus with an elementary abelian two-group, we generalize the maximal symmetry result of Grove and Searle and the half-maximal symmetry result of Wilking for positively curved manifolds with an isometric torus action.

Almost Isotropy-Maximal Manifolds of Non-negative Curvature

We extend the equivariant classification results of Escher and Searle for closed, simply connected, non-negatively curved Riemannian $n$-manifolds admitting isometric isotropy-maximal torus actions to the class of such manifolds admitting isometric strictly almost isotropy-maximal torus actions. In particular, we prove that such manifolds are equivariantly diffeomorphic to the free, linear quotient by a torus of a product of spheres of dimensions greater than or equal to three.

Positive $(p, n)$-intermediate scalar curvature and cobordism

In this paper we consider a well-known construction due to Gromov and Lawson, Schoen and Yau, Gajer, and Walsh which allows for the extension of a metric of positive scalar curvature over the trace of a surgery in codimension at least $3$ to a metric of positive scalar curvature which is a product near the boundary. We generalize this construction to work for $(p,n)$-intermediate scalar curvature for $0\leq p\leq n-2$ for surgeries in codimension at least $p+3$. We then use it to generalize a well known theorem of Carr. Letting ${\cal R}^{s_{p,n}>0}(M)$ denote the space of positive $(p, n)$-intermediate scalar curvature metrics on an $n$-manifold $M$, we show for $0\leq p\leq 2n-3$ and $n\geq 2$, that for a closed, spin, $(4n-1)$-manifold $M$ admitting a metric of positive $(p,4n-1)$-intermediate scalar curvature, ${\cal R}^{s_{p,4n-1}>0}(M)$ has infinitely many path components.

Non-negative curvature and torus actions

Let $\mathcal{M}_{0}^n$ be the class of closed, simply-connected, non-negatively curved Riemannian manifolds admitting an isometric, effective, isotropy-maximal torus action. We prove that if $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$, then $M$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to the free linear quotient by a torus of a product of spheres of dimensions greater than or equal to three. As an immediate consequence, we prove the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for all $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$. Finally, we show the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for simply-connected, non-negatively curved manifolds holds for dimensions less than or equal to nine without assuming the torus action is almost isotropy-maximal or isotropy-maximal.

Almost non-negatively curved 4-manifolds with torus symmetry

We prove that if a closed, smooth, simply-connected 4-manifold with a circle action admits an almost non-negatively curved sequence of invariant Riemannian metrics, then it also admits a non-negatively curved Riemannian metric invariant with respect to the same action. The same is shown for torus actions of higher rank, giving a classification of closed, smooth, simply-connected 4-manifolds of almost non-negative curvature under the assumption of torus symmetry.

Alexandrov Spaces with Integral Current Structure

We endow each closed, orientable Alexandrov space $(X, d)$ with an integral current $T$ of weight equal to 1, $\partial T = 0 and \set(T) = X$, in other words, we prove that $(X, d, T)$ is an integral current space with no boundary. Combining this result with a result of Li and Perales, we show that non-collapsing sequences of these spaces with uniform lower curvature and diameter bounds admit subsequences whose Gromov-Hausdorff and intrinsic flat limits agree.

How to lift positive Ricci curvature

We show how to lift positive Ricci and almost non-negative curvatures from an orbit space $M/G$ to the corresponding $G$-manifold, $M$. We apply the results to get new examples of Riemannian manifolds that satisfy both curvature conditions simultaneously.
