Space-time geometry of Hele-Shaw flow

We study the dynamic behavior of the free boundary of the Hele-Shaw flow with a nonnegative source, in which the pressure satisfies $-\Delta p=c$ in $\{p>0\}$ and the free boundary moves with normal velocity $V=|\nabla p|$. For initial domains satisfying an interior ball condition, we prove that the patch $\{p>0\}$ expands at a locally positive rate, so that its hitting time is locally Lipschitz; this is optimal, since distinct portions of the patch may collide. We also show that the free boundary is locally either regular, or of collision type, or undergoing parabolic-scale hole closings of various dimensions: such a space-time characterization of singularities is new in Hele-Shaw flow. We further show that, near any time at which no collision occurs, the space-time free boundary is a $C^1$ hypersurface. This implies that at such times every free boundary point has a space-time normal: the space-time unit normal is parallel to the time direction precisely where the spatial free boundary has singular geometry. The results apply in particular to the tumor growth model with nutrients introduced by Perthame, Quir\'os, and V\'azquez, but the analysis of singularities is new even for the classical injection problem.

Rate independent capillary motion on a narrow Wilhelmy plate

We study a rate independent energetic model of the Wilhelmy plate experiment in capillarity. The evolution is driven by vertical motions of the plate. We show stability of energy solutions to the evolution, in the sense used in the rate-independent systems literature, as the ratio between container width and plate width goes to infinity. In particular, we show that the volume-constraint for the finite-ratio problem disappears in the limit. This leads to a volume-unconstrained Dirichlet-forced evolution, a setting where monotonicity, uniqueness, and contact line regularity properties have been established in previous literature. Our result is based on using comparison principle techniques for the prescribed mean curvature equation with capillary contact angle condition that characterizes the liquid surface at equilibrium. Through barrier arguments, we are able to develop asymptotics for the energy which give us control independent of the container-to-plate ratio.

Minimizing movements solutions for a monotone model of droplet motion

We study the uniqueness and regularity of minimizing movements solutions of a droplet model in the case of piecewise monotone forcing. We show that such solutions evolve uniquely on each interval of monotonicity, but branching non-uniqueness may occur where jumps and monotonicity changes coincide. This classification of minimizing movements solutions allows us to reduce the quasi-static evolution to a finite sequence of elliptic problems and establish $L^\infty_tC^{1,1/2-}_x$-regularity of solutions.

Free boundary regularity for tumor growth with nutrients and diffusion

In this paper, we study a tumor growth model where the growth is driven by nutrient availability and the tumor expands according to Darcy's law with a mechanical pressure resulting from the incompressibility of the cells. Our focus is on the free boundary regularity of the tumor patch that holds beyond topological changes. A crucial element in our analysis is establishing the regularity of the hitting time T, which records the first time the tumor patch reaches a given point. We achieve this by introducing a novel Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) interpretation of the pressure, which is of independent interest. The HJB structure is obtained by viewing the model as a limit of the Porous Media Equation (PME) and building upon a new variant of the AB estimate. Using the HJB structure, we establish a new Hopf-Lax type formula for the pressure variable. Combined with barrier arguments, the formula allows us to show that T is C^{\alpha}, where \alpha depends only on the dimension, which translates into a mild nondegeneracy of the tumor patch evolution. Building on this and obstacle problem theory, we show that the tumor patch boundary is regular in spacetime except on a set of Hausdorff dimension at most $d-\alpha$. On the set of regular points, we further show that the tumor patch is locally $C^{1,\alpha}$ in space-time. This conclusively establishes that instabilities in the boundary evolution do not amplify arbitrarily high frequencies.
