Nonequilibrium Dynamics of the Chiral Quark Condensate under a Strong Magnetic Field

Strong magnetic fields impact quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) properties in several situations; examples include the early universe, magnetars, and heavy-ion collisions. These examples share a common trait: time evolution. A prominent QCD property impacted by a strong magnetic field is the quark condensate, an approximate order parameter of the QCD transition between a high-temperature quark-gluon phase and a low-temperature hadronic phase. We use the linear sigma model with quarks to address the quark condensate time evolution under a strong magnetic field. We use the closed time path formalism of nonequilibrium quantum field theory to integrate out the quarks and obtain a mean-field Langevin equation for the condensate. The Langevin equation features dissipation and noise kernels controlled by a damping coefficient. We compute the damping coefficient for magnetic field and temperature values achieved in peripheral relativistic heavy-ion collisions and solve the Langevin equation for a temperature quench scenario. The magnetic field changes the dissipation and noise pattern by increasing the damping coefficient compared to the zero-field case. An increased damping coefficient increases fluctuations and time scales controlling condensate's short-time evolution, a feature that can impact hadron formation at the QCD transition. The formalism developed here can be extended to include other order parameters, hydrodynamic modes, and system's expansion to address magnetic field effects in complex settings as heavy-ion collisions, the early universe, and magnetars.

A dimension five Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling for mesons in the KLZ model

We investigate a dimension five Lorentz-violating (LV) nonminimal coupling between the neutral vector meson field strength and the pion current in the context of the Kroll-Lee-Zumino (KLZ) model. In this modified model we study the vector meson dominance (VMD) through of the imposing of new universality conditions between the couplings that comes from LV contributions. We also show that the LV nonminimal coupling leads to a linear momentum dependence in the timelike pion form factor, that is used to evaluate LV corrections for the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The experimental imprecision of such quantity allows us to obtain upper bound $\bar{g}\xi_{0} < 1.0 \mathbf{~}\mathrm{{GeV}}^{-1}.$ In addition, we also use the LV nonminimal coupling in the KLZ model to recalculate the $\rho$ decay rate. In this case the experimental imprecision is used to constrain the magnitude of the LV parameter at the level of $\bar{g}\xi_{0} < 1.9\times10^{-2}\mathbf{~}\mathrm{{GeV}}^{-1}$.

Strong couplings and form factors of charmed mesons in holographic QCD

We extend the two-flavor hard-wall holographic model of Erlich, Katz, Son and Stephanov [Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 95}, 261602 (2005)] to four flavors to incorporate strange and charm quarks. The model incorporates chiral and flavor symmetry breaking and provides a reasonable description of masses and weak decay constants of a variety of scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector strange and charmed mesons. In particular, we examine flavor symmetry breaking in the strong couplings of the $\rho$ meson to the charmed $D$ and $D^{*}$ mesons. We also compute electromagnetic form factors of the $\pi$, $\rho$, $K$, $K^*$, $D$ and $D^*$ mesons. We compare our results for the $D$ and $D^*$ mesons with lattice QCD data and other nonperturbative approaches.

Inverse Magnetic Catalysis in Bottom-Up Holographic QCD

We explore the effect of magnetic field on chiral condensation in QCD via a simple bottom up holographic model which inputs QCD dynamics through the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark bilinear. Bottom up holography is a form of effective field theory and we use it to explore the dependence on the coefficients of the two lowest order terms linking the magnetic field and the quark condensate. In the massless theory, we identify a region of parameter space where magnetic catalysis occurs at zero temperature but inverse magnetic catalysis at temperatures of order the thermal phase transition. The model shows similar non-monotonic behaviour in the condensate with B at intermediate T as the lattice data. This behaviour is due to the separation of the meson melting and chiral transitions in the holographic framework. The introduction of quark mass raises the scale of B where inverse catalysis takes over from catalysis until the inverse catalysis lies outside the regime of validity of the effective description leaving just catalysis.

Decay constants of the pion and its excitations in holographic QCD

We investigate the leptonic decay constants of the pion and its excitations with a 5-d holographic model for quantum chromodynamics. We prove numerically that the leptonic decay constants of the excited states of the pion vanish in the chiral limit when chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. This nontrivial result is in agreement with a solid prediction of quantum chromodynamics and is based on a generalized Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relationship involving the decay constants and masses of the excited states of the pion. We also obtain an extended partially conserved axial-vector current relation that includes the fields of the excited states of the pion, a relation that was proposed long ago in the context of current algebra.
