Search for new particles decaying into top quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for new particles decaying to top quark-antiquark pairs is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set recorded with the CMS detector between 2016 and 2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Final states with 0, 1, and 2 leptons are analyzed, covering all decay modes of the top quark-antiquark pairs. Heavy Z' bosons with relative widths of 1, 10, and 30% are excluded for masses in the ranges 0.4$-$4.8, 0.4$-$6.2, and 0.4$-$7.4 TeV, respectively. A Kaluza$-$Klein gluon in the Randall$-$Sundrum model and a dark-matter mediator are excluded for masses between 0.5$-$5.5 and 1.0$-$4.2 TeV, respectively. These results set the most stringent limits to date for the considered models in the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ final state. In addition, in the two-Higgs-doublet models, upper limits are set on the coupling strength modifier for scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons with relative widths of 2.5, 10, and 25% in the mass range of 0.5$-$1.0 TeV.

Measurements of ttW differential cross sections and the leptonic charge asymmetry at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of properties of top quark-antiquark pair production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected based on the presence of either two leptons with the same electric charge or three leptons, and multiple jets and b-tagged jets. We present measurements of differential production cross sections as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to different aspects of the process modeling, using a multivariate discriminator in the two-lepton selection region and a simple selection-based method in the three-lepton region. The normalized cross section measurements are generally consistent with the standard model expectations, while we observe larger values compared to the expectations in the absolute cross section measurements, consistent with previous inclusive cross section measurements. In addition, we measure the leptonic charge asymmetry of this process, obtaining an observed value of $A_\text{c}^{\ell}$ = $-$0.19 $^{+0.16}_{-0.18}$, consistent with the expectation of $-$0.085 $\pm$ 0.006 predicted by next-to-leading order simulations.

Search for low-mass vector and scalar resonances decaying into a quark-antiquark pair in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for resonances with masses from 50 to 300 GeV decaying into a quark-antiquark pair is presented. The search uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016$-$2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 fb$^{-1}$. Two coupling scenarios are considered, with the resonances coupled either equally to all flavors of quarks or preferentially to bottom quarks. The search targets resonances produced in association with hard initial-state radiation, resulting in a large-radius jet with a two-pronged substructure. The ParticleNet algorithm is used to distinguish resonance decays to bottom quark pairs from lighter quark pairs and to suppress background processes. The invariant jet mass spectrum is scrutinized for peaking excesses over a falling background. No evidence for such resonances is observed. Limits are set on the couplings of new scalar and vector resonances to quarks, representing the most stringent limits to date in the mass range of 50$-$250 GeV.

Model-independent measurement of the Higgs boson associated production with two jets and decaying to a pair of W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A model-independent measurement of the differential production cross section of the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of W bosons, with a final state including two jets produced in association, is presented. In the analysis, events are selected in which the decay products of the two W bosons consist of an electron, a muon, and missing transverse momentum. The model independence of the measurement is maximized by making use of a discriminating variable, developed through machine learning, that is agnostic to the signal hypothesis. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector from 2016$-$2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The production cross section is measured as a function of the difference in azimuthal angle between the two jets. The differential cross section measurements are used to constrain Higgs boson couplings within the standard model effective field theory framework.

Vector boson scattering and anomalous quartic couplings in final states with $\ellν$qq or $\ell\ell$qq plus jets using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement is presented of the electroweak vector boson scattering production of ZV (V = W, Z) boson pairs associated with two jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, were collected at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector during the 2016$-$2018 data-taking period. The analysis targets final states with a pair of isolated electrons or muons from Z boson decays and three or four jets, depending on the momentum of the vector boson that decays into quarks. Signal strength is measured for events characterized by a large invariant mass of two forward jets with a wide pseudorapidity gap between them. The electroweak production of ZV in association with two jets is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 1.3 (1.8) standard deviations. A combination of the analyses of ZV channel and the previously published WV channel in the lepton plus jets final state places constraints on effective field theory parameters that describe anomalous electroweak production of WW, WZ, and ZZ boson pairs in association with two jets. Several world best limits are set on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in terms of dimension-8 standard model effective field theory operators.

Probing the flavour structure of dimension-6 EFT operators in multilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

An analysis of the flavour structure of dimension-6 effective field theory (EFT) operators in multilepton final states is presented, focusing on the interactions of quarks with Z bosons. For the first time, the flavour structure of these operators is disentangled by simultaneously probing the interactions with different quark generations. The analysis targets the associated production of a top quark pair and a Z boson, as well as diboson processes in final states with at least three leptons, which can be electrons or muons. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment in the years 2016$-$2018 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Consistency with the standard model of particle physics is observed and limits are set on the selected Wilson coefficients, split into couplings to light- and heavy-quark generations.

Characterization of the quantum state of top quark pairs produced in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using the beam and helicity bases

Measurements of the spin correlation coefficients in the beam basis are presented for top quark-antiquark ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) systems produced in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment in 2016$-$2018, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ system is reconstructed from final states containing an electron or muon, and jets. Together with the previously reported results in the helicity basis, these measurements are used to decompose the system into the Bell and spin eigenstates in various kinematic regions. The spin correlation coefficients are also used to evaluate properties of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ quantum state, such as the purity, von Neumann entropy, and entanglement. All results are consistent with standard model predictions.

Jet peak shapes based on two-particle angular correlations in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The longitudinal invariance of jet-induced peaks in two-particle correlation functions from relativistic lead-lead collisions is experimentally explored. The data were collected at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV in 2018 using the CMS detector. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb$^{-1}$. Long- and short-range correlations are studied through two-dimensional distributions of the separations in pseudorapidity and azimuth between particles in an event. Jets manifest as a well-defined peak at small angular separations, and the shape of this peak provides insight into jet medium interactions. This Letter examines the evolution of the jet peak shape, focusing on the dependence of its width and longitudinal asymmetry on the transverse momentum, collision centrality, and pseudorapidity of the associated charged particles. The jet-peak distributions of lower transverse momentum particles broaden in both pseudorapidity and azimuth with increasing collision overlap, with the broadening in pseudorapidity being more pronounced. The longitudinal asymmetry of the peaks is also found to increase as the average pseudorapidity increases. These results are compared to proton-proton collision data that were obtained at the same nucleon-nucleon collision center-of-mass energy with an integrated luminosity of 252 nb$^{-1}$.

Search for Z' bosons decaying into charginos in final states with two oppositely charged leptons and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Massive leptophobic Z' bosons decaying to a pair of charginos are searched for in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, using data samples collected by the CMS experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The Z' bosons originate from an additional U(1)' gauge symmetry extended to the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The final state consists of two oppositely charged leptons and missing transverse momentum. The signal extraction is performed with a parametrized neural network. The measurements are found to be consistent with the standard model expectations. Upper limits are set on the Z' boson production cross sections as a function of the Z' and chargino masses. The analysis excludes Z' boson masses up to about 3.5 TeV for the specific case of Z' bosons decaying exclusively to charginos, with the charginos decaying to W bosons and neutralinos.

Measurement of angular correlations inside jets induced by gluon polarization in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

A study of angular correlations inside jets induced by gluon polarization is performed using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb$^{-1}$, collected in 2022 with the CMS detector at the LHC. The details of the parton shower are investigated using jets reconstructed with the anti-$k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm and subsequently declustered with the Cambridge$-$Aachen algorithm. A novel analysis technique is developed to identify characteristic features of the jet substructure and to select intermediate gluon splittings into quark-antiquark pairs. An observable sensitive to gluon polarization in the parton shower is measured and compared with PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7 model predictions, with and without angular correlations induced by the gluon spin. The results are consistent with models that incorporate gluon polarization and strongly disfavor those that neglect them.

Search for nonresonant new physics signals in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for nonresonant new physics phenomena in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets is performed using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016$-$2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis considers two effective field theory models with dimension-six operators; involving four-fermion contact interactions between two leptons ($\ell\ell$, electrons or muons) and b or s quarks (bb$\ell\ell$ and bs$\ell\ell$). Two lepton flavor combinations (ee and $μμ$) are required and events are classified as having 0, 1, and $\geq$ 2 b-tagged jets in the final state. No significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set on the production cross section of the new physics signals. These translate into lower limits on the energy scale $Λ$ of 6.9 to 9.0 TeV in the bb$\ell\ell$ model, depending on model parameters, and on the ratio of energy scale and effective coupling, $Λ/g_*$, of 2.0 to 2.6 TeV in the bs$\ell\ell$ model. Lepton flavor universality is also tested by comparing the dielectron and dimuon mass spectra for different b-tagged jet multiplicities. No significant deviation from the standard model expectation of unity is observed.

Observation of tWZ production at the CMS experiment

The first observation of single top quark production in association with a W and a Z boson in proton-proton collisions is reported. The analysis uses data at center-of-mass energies of 13 and 13.6 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 200 fb$^{-1}$. Events with three or four charged leptons, which can be electrons or muons, are selected. Advanced machine-learning algorithms and improved reconstruction methods, compared to an earlier analysis, result in an unprecedented sensitivity to tWZ production. The measured cross sections for tWZ production are 248 $\pm$ 52 fb and 242 $\pm$ 77 fb for $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 and 13.6 TeV, respectively. The signal is established with a statistical significance of 5.8 standard deviations, with 3.5 expected, compared to the background-only hypothesis.

Evidence of medium response to hard probes using correlations of Z bosons with hadrons in heavy ion collisions

The first measurement of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle distributions relative to the momentum vector of a Z boson for low transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) charged hadrons in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions is presented. By studying the hadrons produced in an event with a high-$p_\mathrm{T}$ Z boson (40 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 350 GeV), the analysis probes how the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium created in these collisions affects the parton recoiling opposite to the Z boson. Utilizing PbPb data at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV from 2018 with an integrated luminosity of 1.67 nb$^{-1}$ and proton-proton (pp) data at the same energy from 2017 with 301 pb$^{-1}$, the distributions are examined in bins of charged-hadron $p_\mathrm{T}$. A significant modification of the distributions for charged hadrons in the range 1 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 2 GeV in PbPb collisions is observed when compared to reference measurements from pp collisions. The data provide new information about the correlation between hard and soft particles in heavy ion collisions, which can be used to test predictions of various jet quenching models. When compared to theoretical predictions, the results are consistent with expectations of a hydrodynamic wake created when the QGP is depleted of energy by the parton propagating through it. Therefore, this Letter presents the first evidence of probe-induced energy depletion and the resulting response by the QGP medium.

First measurement of jet axis decorrelation with photon-tagged jets in pp and PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV

The first measurement of the jet axis decorrelation in events with jets recoiling from an isolated photon is presented for lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The jet axis decorrelation is the angular difference ($Δ{j}$) between two definitions of the jet axis. This quantity is expected to be sensitive to the scattering of jet constituents in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Events which have a leading isolated photon with transverse momentum 60 $\lt$ $p_{\mathrm{T}}^γ$ $\lt$ 200 GeV and recoiling jets with 30 $\lt$ $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\text{jet}}$ $\lt$ 100 GeV are selected for the analysis. The PbPb result is reported as a function of collision centrality and compared to pp reference data. Jets with $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\text{jet}}$ $\lt$ 60 GeV have consistent $Δ{j}$ shapes for pp and PbPb collisions. However, a narrowing is observed for jets with $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\text{jet}}$ $\gt$ 60 GeV in central PbPb collisions. The results are compared to predictions from the JEWEL, PYQUEN, and HYBRID theoretical models, which include different descriptions of parton energy loss in the QGP.

Measurement of event shape variables using charged particles inside jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Event shape variables, constructed from the four-momenta of the final-state objects in an event, are sensitive to the predictions of quantum chromodynamics in multijet production. A measurement of five event shape variables is presented, using proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector during 2016$-$2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The variables are evaluated using the charged particles inside jets. After correcting for detector effects, their distributions are compared with the results from the predictions from a number of models for multijet production. Overall, there is general agreement between several theoretical predictions and the data.

Influence of strangeness on the anisotropic flow of prompt D$^\pm_\mathrm{s}$ mesons in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The azimuthal anisotropy of prompt D$^\pm_\mathrm{s}$ mesons produced in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV is measured using data obtained with the CMS detector. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.58 nb$^{-1}$. The azimuthal anisotropy of heavy charmed mesons provides a key constraint on the interactions of charm quarks with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium. These interactions include coalescence mechanisms and parton energy loss in the QGP. The anisotropy is quantified by the second- ($v_2$) and third-order ($v_3$) Fourier coefficients of the azimuthal distribution of the D$^\pm_\mathrm{s}$ mesons. The $v_2$ coefficient is determined in the transverse momentum range 4 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 40 GeV for three event centrality classes, while the $v_3$ coefficient is measured in the range 4 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 20 GeV for a single event centrality class. The results for the D$^\pm_\mathrm{s}$ mesons are compared to those previously measured for D$^0$ mesons. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficients for D$^\pm_\mathrm{s}$ and D$^0$ mesons are found to be consistent within the precision of this measurement, suggesting that the strangeness content of the D$^\pm_\mathrm{s}$ meson does not significantly alter its azimuthal distribution within the measured $p_\mathrm{T}$ range.

Search for resonances decaying to an anomalous jet and a Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This paper presents a search for new physics through the process where a new massive particle, X, decays into a Higgs boson and a second particle, Y. The Higgs boson subsequently decays into a bottom quark-antiquark pair, which is reconstructed as a single large-radius jet. The decay products of Y are also assumed to produce a single large-radius jet. The identification of the Y particle is enhanced by computing the anomaly score of its candidate jet using an autoencoder, which measures deviations from typical quark- or gluon-induced jets. This allows a simultaneous search for multiple Y decay scenarios within a single analysis. In the main benchmark process, Y is a scalar particle that decays into a W boson pair. Two other scalar Y decay processes are also considered as benchmarks: decays to a light quark-antiquark pair, and decays to a top quark-antiquark pair. A fourth benchmark process considers Y as a hadronically decaying top quark, arising from the decay of a vector-like quark into a top quark and a Higgs boson. Data recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016$-$2018, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, are analyzed. The search covers X masses between 1.4 and 3.0 TeV and Y masses between 90 and 400 GeV, with all simulated signals produced in the narrow-width approximation. No significant excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. The most stringent upper limits to date are placed on benchmark signal cross section for various masses of X and Y.

Probing early parton emissions in heavy ion collisions using the Lund jet plane

In scattering experiments, high-virtuality partons, i.e., quarks and gluons, initiate a series of additional parton emissions to create collimated sprays of particles known as jets. This paper presents a measurement of the Lund jet plane (LJP) of high-energy jets produced in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions and compares the results to data for proton-proton (pp) collisions. The LJP is formed by iteratively declustering the constituents of a jet into consecutive emissions and recording the relative transverse momentum ($k_\mathrm{T}$) and angle of the resulting emission with respect to its emitter. The angular distributions of two different $k_\mathrm{T}$ slices of the LJP are investigated for jets with radius parameter of 0.4 and transverse momentum in the range 200$-$1000 GeV. The PbPb (pp) data were recorded by the CMS experiment in 2018 (2017) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb$^{-1}$ (301 pb$^{-1}$) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The measurement was designed to test whether the earliest jet emissions are produced before the formation of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in PbPb collisions. Within the experimental uncertainties, no significant difference is observed between the angular distribution of high-$k_\mathrm{T}$ emissions in \pp and PbPb collisions, which is consistent with these emissions occurring early in the jet evolution, before substantial interaction with the QGP.
