Measurements of Higgs boson production cross section in the four-lepton final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

The measurements of the Higgs boson (H) production cross sections performed by the CMS Collaboration in the four-lepton (4$\ell$, $\ell$ = e, $μ$) final state at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV are presented. These measurements are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb$^{-1}$. Cross sections are measured in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute value of the rapidity of the four-lepton system. The H $\to$ ZZ $\to$ 4$\ell$ inclusive fiducial cross section is measured to be 2.89 $^{+0.53}_{-0.49}$ (stat) $^{+0.29}_{-0.21}$ (syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 3.09 $^{+0.27}_{-0.24}$ fb.

Measurements of inclusive and differential cross sections for the Higgs boson production and decay to four-leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections for the Higgs boson production in the H $\to$ ZZ $\to$ 4$\ell$ ($\ell$ = e,$μ$) decay channel are presented. The results are obtained from the analysis of proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section is 2.73 $\pm$ 0.26 fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 2.86 $\pm$ 0.1 fb. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of several kinematic observables sensitive to the Higgs boson production and decay to four leptons. A set of double-differential measurements is also performed, yielding a comprehensive characterization of the four leptons final state. Constraints on the Higgs boson trilinear coupling and on the bottom and charm quark coupling modifiers are derived from its transverse momentum distribution. All results are consistent with theoretical predictions from the standard model.

Measurement of the $Υ$(1S), $Υ$(2S), and $Υ$(3S) differential cross sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

The production cross sections of the $Υ$(1S), $Υ$(2S), and $Υ$(3S) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV, using a data sample collected in 2022 by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37.4 fb$^{-1}$. The measurement is performed in the $μ^+μ^-$ decay channels, differentially as a function of transverse momentum in the 20$-$200 GeV range, in the $\lvert y \rvert$ $\lt$ 0.6 and 0.6 $\lt$ $\lvert y \rvert$ $\lt$ 1.2 rapidity intervals.

System-size dependence of charged-particle suppression in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

High-energy partons lose energy while propagating through the hot, strongly interacting medium produced in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, leading to a suppression of particle production at high transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$). The dependence of this energy loss on the size of the colliding nuclear system has yet to be firmly established experimentally. This Letter presents a systematic study of charged-particle suppression across four different nucleus-nucleus collision systems using nuclear modification factors ($R_\mathrm{AA}$) measured by the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC. Previous CMS measurements of $R_\mathrm{AA}$ in oxygen-oxygen, xenon-xenon, and lead-lead collisions are recast with identical $p_\mathrm{T}$ intervals and are complemented by the first measurement of the charged-particle $R_\mathrm{AA}$ in neon-neon collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.36 TeV. The neon-neon data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 0.76 nb$^{-1}$. The $R_\mathrm{AA}$ in all collision systems examined show similar qualitative trends as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}$, but have a magnitude which is ordered with the nucleon number A. The $R_\mathrm{AA}$ feature a downward slope at low $p_\mathrm{T}$, a local minimum at around 5$-$7 GeV, and an upward slope with increasing $p_\mathrm{T}$. The $R_\mathrm{AA}$ are also compared in terms of A$^{1/3}$, which is proportional to the nuclear radius. Models including only initial-state nuclear effects fail to reproduce the observed trends, whereas energy loss models reproduce the trends in the region $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\gt$ 9.6 GeV.

Measurement of the $γγ\to ττ$ cross section and constraints on the anomalous magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of $τ$ lepton pairs via photon-photon fusion, $γγ\to ττ$, is studied in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The dataset, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.70 nb$^{-1}$. Four different $τ^+τ^-$ decay final states are analyzed. A simultaneous likelihood fit to the measured lepton transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) distributions, which incorporates information from both spectral shape and normalization, is used to constrain the anomalous magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton, $a_τ$, and to extract the cross section of the process. The measured 95% CL interval for $a_τ$ is $-$0.039 $\lt$ $a_τ$ $\lt$ 0.032. The fiducial cross section, $σ_{γγ\to ττ}^\text{fid}$ = 555$^{+60}_{-14}$ $μ$b for tau leptons with $p_\mathrm{T}^τ$ $\gt$ 1 GeV and pseudorapidity $\lvertη^τ\rvert$ $\lt$ 3, is the most precise measurement for this process at the LHC to date and is in agreement with next-to-leading-order quantum electrodynamics predictions.

Search for the pair production of long-lived supersymmetric partners of the tau lepton in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Gauge-mediated supersymmetry-breaking models provide a strong motivation to search for a supersymmetric partner of the tau lepton (stau) with a macroscopic lifetime. Long-lived stau decays produce tau leptons that are displaced from the primary proton-proton interaction vertex, leading to an unconventional signature. This paper presents a search for the direct production of long-lived staus decaying within the CMS tracker volume in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, performed for the first time with an identification algorithm based on a graph neural network dedicated to displaced tau leptons. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC between 2016 and 2018. This search excludes, at 95% confidence level, stau masses, $m_\tildeτ$, in the 126$-$260 (90$-$425) GeV range for a proper decay length of 50 mm in the maximally mixed (mass-degenerate) scenario, while for $m_\tildeτ $ = 200 GeV, stau proper decay lengths are excluded in the range 21$-$94 (6$-$333) mm. These results improve the exclusion limits compared to previous searches, and extend the parameter space explored in the context of supersymmetry.

Measurement of B meson production fraction ratios in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using open-charm and charmonium decays

Production fraction ratios of B$^+$, B$^0$, and B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using a special data set recorded in 2018 with high-rate triggers designed to collect an unbiased sample of $10^{10}$ b hadrons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. These data allow the study of the open-charm decays of B mesons (B$_\mathrm{(s)}$ $\to$ $π$D$_\mathrm{(s)}$) where the D meson decays into fully hadronic final states. By utilizing known branching fractions and precise theoretical calculations, production fraction ratios as functions of B meson transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) and rapidity ($y$) are measured using the open-charm decays in the kinematic range of 8 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 60 GeV and $\lvert y \rvert$ $\lt$ 2.25. In addition, the same data set is used to measure the relative production fraction ratios with the charmonium decay channels (B$_\mathrm{(s)}$ $\to$ X$\,$J/$ψ$ with X indicating a K$^+$, K$^*$(892)$^0$, or $ϕ$(1020) meson) where the J/$ψ$ meson decays into a pair of muons. The open-charm results are used to normalize the relative production fraction ratios obtained from the charmonium samples. Measurements of the ratios of branching fractions of B meson decays to charmonium and open-charm final states are also reported, which will improve the world-average values of these ratios. Finally, we test isospin invariance in B meson production in proton-proton collisions and observe that it holds within the experimental precision.

Study of $χ_{\mathrm{c}}$ production in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV

Production of prompt P-wave charmonium states $χ_\mathrm{c1}$(1P) and $χ_\mathrm{c2}$(1P) is studied in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{\smash[b]{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}}$ = 8.16 TeV. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The $χ_\mathrm{c}$ states are measured via their decay $χ_\mathrm{c}$ $\to$ J$/ψ\,γ$. The J$/ψ$ meson is reconstructed via its decay to a muon pair, while the photon is reconstructed through its conversion to an electron-positron pair. The ratio of production cross sections times branching fractions for the two charmonium states, [$σ(χ_\mathrm{c2}) \mathcal{B}(χ_\mathrm{c2}$ $\to$ J$/ψ\, γ$)] / [$σ(χ_\mathrm{c1}) \mathcal{B}(χ_\mathrm{c1}$ $\to$ J$/ψ\, γ)$], is reported in the rapidity range $\vert y($J$/ψ)\vert$ $\lt$ 2.4 for the transverse momentum range 6.5 $\lt$ $p_{\mathrm{T}}$(J$/ψ$) $\lt$ 30 GeV. The $χ_\mathrm{c2}$-to-$χ_\mathrm{c1}$ ratio is found to be independent of event charged-particle multiplicity, as well as of the rapidity and $p_\mathrm{T}$ of the J$/ψ$. The consistency of this ratio with proton-proton measurements at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV indicates an absence of strong relative modification for $χ_\mathrm{c}$ states in pPb collisions, in contrast to the behavior observed in the $ψ$(2S)-to-J$/ψ$ ratio.

Search for soft unclustered energy patterns produced in association with a W or Z boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a W or Z boson and decaying via a soft unclustered energy pattern (SUEP) is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ collected between 2016 and 2018 at the LHC. Final states with a leptonic W or Z boson decay associated with a high multiplicity of low-momentum charged particles are explored for the first time. The results show no significant excess over the standard model background expectation. Limits are set on the production cross section of a Higgs boson that decays to a SUEP, for a range of parameters of the SUEP model. Material is provided to facilitate further interpretation of the results.

Search for a new neutral gauge boson produced in association with one or two b jets and decaying into a pair of muons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for a new neutral gauge boson, Z', produced in association with one or two jets, including at least one b jet, and decaying into a pair of muons is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. No significant deviation from background expectations is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the product of cross section, branching fraction to dimuons, acceptance, and efficiency, from 0.2 to 2 fb, are set for Z' boson masses between 125 and 350 GeV. Process-dependent products of acceptance and efficiency, and model-independent limits on the signal yield are provided. These are the only results to date in the 125$-$200 GeV mass range and the most stringent for b quark fusion production modes in the 200$-$350 GeV range, complementing inclusive Z' boson searches.

Search for single production of a vector-like T quark decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson in the lepton+jets final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for single production of a vector-like T quark with charge 2$e$/3, decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson is presented. The boson can be a standard model Higgs boson (H) or a new scalar boson ($ϕ$). In the first case, a branching fraction of 25% is assumed for the decay T $\to$ tH, while in the second case the T quark is assumed to decay exclusively to t$ϕ$. The top quark is identified via its lepton+jets decay, and the neutral boson via its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair. Final states with Lorentz-boosted topologies are considered and machine-learning techniques are exploited for optimal event classification. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016$-$2018. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction for a T quark in a narrow-width approximation. They vary between 14.7 and 0.1 fb, for T quark masses in the range 1.3$-$3.0 TeV and $ϕ$ boson masses in the range 25$-$250 GeV. These are the first exclusion limits set on the production of a single T quark decaying into a top quark and a new neutral scalar boson. For the decay channel into a top quark and a standard model Higgs boson, the results provide the best limits on production cross sections to date, for T quark masses above 2 TeV.

Measurement of the jet mass in hadronic decays of boosted W bosons at 13 TeV and extraction of the W boson mass

The jet mass of W bosons decaying to a quark-antiquark pair is measured in W+jets events from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Hadronic decays of W bosons with high momenta produce strongly collimated decay products due to the large Lorentz boost, and are reconstructed as single large-radius jets. These jets have a characteristic substructure that is exploited to distinguish them from the large background of quark- and gluon-initiated jets. The jet mass is computed using the soft-drop algorithm, which suppresses soft wide-angle radiation that leads to a broadening of the jet mass distribution. For the first time, unfolded measurements are presented of the double-differential W+jets cross section as a function of the jet transverse momentum and soft-drop mass. From these distributions, the W boson mass is obtained, with a value of 80.83 $\pm$ 0.55 GeV, achieving the smallest uncertainty available today from an all-jets final state at a hadron collider.

Combination of searches for heavy vector boson resonances in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A combined statistical analysis of searches for heavy vector boson resonances decaying into pairs of W, Z, or Higgs bosons, as well as into quark pairs ($\mathrm{q\bar{q}}$, $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$, $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$, $\mathrm{t\bar{b}}$) or lepton pairs ($\ell^+\ell^-$, $\ell\barν$), with $\ell =$ e, $μ$, $τ$, is presented. The results are based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS experiment from 2016 to 2018. No significant deviation from the expectations of the standard model is observed. The results are interpreted in the simplified heavy vector triplet (HVT) framework, setting 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross sections and coupling strengths of the HVT bosons to standard model particles. The results exclude HVT resonances with masses below 5.5 TeV in a weakly coupled scenario, below 4.8 TeV in a strongly coupled scenario, and up to 2.0 TeV in the case of production via vector boson fusion. The combination provides the most stringent constraints to date on new phenomena predicted by the HVT model.

Machine-learning techniques for model-independent searches in dijet final states

Anomaly detection methods used in a recent search for new phenomena by CMS at the CERN LHC are presented. The methods use machine learning to detect anomalous jets produced in the decay of new massive particles without depending on a specific theory model. The effectiveness of these approaches in enhancing sensitivity to various signal samples is studied and compared using data collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In an example analysis, the capabilities of anomaly detection methods are further demonstrated by identifying large-radius jets consistent with Lorentz-boosted hadronically decaying top quarks in a model-agnostic framework.

Measurement and effective field theory interpretation of the photon-fusion production cross section of a pair of W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This analysis presents an observation of the photon-fusion production of W boson pairs using the CMS detector at the LHC. The total cross section of the W$^+$W$^-$ production in photon fusion is measured using proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector in 2016$-$2018 at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. Events are selected in the final state with one isolated electron and one isolated muon, and no additional tracks associated with the electron-muon production vertex. The total and fiducial production cross sections are 643 $^{+82}_{-78}$ fb and 3.96 $^{+0.53}_{-0.51}$ fb, respectively, in agreement with the standard model predictions of 631 $\pm$ 126 fb and 3.87 $\pm$ 0.77 fb. This agreement enables stringent constraints to be imposed on anomalous quartic gauge couplings within a dimension-8 effective field theory framework.

Observation of electroweak production of pairs of Z bosons in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

The first evidence of electroweak (EW) production of pairs of Z bosons in association with two jets (jj) in the final state ZZjj $\to$ $\ell\ellνν$jj, where $\ell$ = e, $μ$, is reported by the CMS experiment. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Events are selected by requiring exactly two leptons of same flavor and opposite charge, large missing transverse momentum, and two jets with a large rapidity separation and large invariant mass. The EW production cross section in a fiducial volume is $σ_{\mathrm{EW}}$(pp $\to$ ZZjj $\to$ $\ell\ellνν$jj) = 0.37$^{+0.14}_{-0.12}$ (stat)$^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ (syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 0.39 $\pm$ 0.06 fb. The observed (expected) significance of the signal is 3.1 (2.8) standard deviations. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are derived in terms of dimension-8 effective field theory operators. A combination with the previously reported result from the ZZ decay channel with four charged leptons yields an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.5) standard deviations for the EW production of Z boson pairs.

Search for dark matter production in association with bottom quarks and a lepton pair in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is performed for dark matter produced in association with bottom quarks and a pair of electrons or muons in data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to 138 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. For the first time at the LHC, the associated production of a bottom quark-antiquark pair and a new heavy neutral Higgs boson (H) that subsequently decays into a leptonically decaying Z boson and a pseudoscalar (a) is explored. The latter acts as a dark matter mediator in the context of the two Higgs doublet model plus a pseudoscalar (2HDM+a). Multivariate techniques that target a wide range of mass configurations for the H and a particles are used. The observations are consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction of the new particles, ranging from 10$^{-2}$ pb for an H mass of 400 GeV to 10$^{-3}$ pb for an H mass of 2000 GeV. Constraints on the parameter space of a benchmark 2HDM+a model are derived and compared with expectations in the context of cosmological predictions.

Search for pair production of heavy resonances in final states with a photon and large-radius jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the pair production of heavy spin-1/2 or spin-3/2 resonances (t$^*$) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. Data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC from 2016 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ are used. The analysis targets benchmark signal scenarios where one t$^*$ decays into a top quark (t) and a photon ($γ$), and the other into a t quark and a gluon (g), i.e., pp $\to$ t$^*\bar{\mathrm{t}}^*$ $\to$ tt$γ$g. All-hadronic final states from the t pair decay chain are selected using jet substructure techniques. The signal is probed as a function of the t$^*$ candidate mass, which is reconstructed using the photon and a top quark candidate jet. No significant deviation from the background-only hypothesis is found. Observed (expected) upper limits on the signal cross section at 95% confidence level are set, excluding masses of spin-1/2 t$^*$ particles below 930 (930) GeV and spin-3/2 t$^*$ particles below 1330 (1390) GeV. This analysis marks the first search for heavy resonances in the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}γ$g channel. Exploiting the high-energy photon to reduce the backgrounds, this search achieves sensitivity competitive with pp $\to$ t$^*\mathrm{\bar{t}}^*$ $\to$ $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$gg searches for spin-1/2 t$^*$ despite the small expected t$^*$ $\to$ t$γ$ branching fraction.
