Probing small Bjorken-$x$ nuclear gluonic structure via coherent J/$ψ$ photoproduction in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Quasireal photons exchanged in relativistic heavy ion interactions are powerful probes of the gluonic structure of nuclei. The coherent J/$ψ$ photoproduction cross section in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions is measured as a function of photon-nucleus center-of-mass energies per nucleon (W$^\text{Pb}_{γ\text{N}}$), over a wide range of 40 $\lt$ W$^\text{Pb}_{γ\text{N}}$ $\lt$ 400 GeV. Results are obtained using data at the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.52 nb$^{-1}$. The cross section is observed to rise rapidly at low W$^\text{Pb}_{γ\text{N}}$, and plateau above W$^\text{Pb}_{γ\text{N}}$ $\approx$ 40 GeV, up to 400 GeV, a new regime of small Bjorken-$x$ ($\approx$ 6 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$) gluons being probed in a heavy nucleus. The observed energy dependence is not predicted by current quantum chromodynamic models.

Search for Z' bosons decaying to pairs of heavy Majorana neutrinos in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the production of pairs of heavy Majorana neutrinos (N$_\ell$) from the decays of Z' bosons is performed using the CMS detector at the LHC. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The signature for the search is an excess in the invariant mass distribution of the final-state objects, two same-flavor leptons (e or $μ$) and at least two jets. No significant excess of events beyond the expected background is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the Z' production cross section and its branching fraction to a pair of N$_\ell$, as functions of N$_\ell$ and Z' boson masses ($m_{\mathrm{N}_\ell}$ and $m_\mathrm{Z'}$, respectively) for $m_\mathrm{Z'}$ from 0.4 to 4.6 TeV and $m_{\mathrm{N}_\ell}$ from 0.1 TeV to $m_\mathrm{Z'}$/2. In the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, exclusion bounds in the $m_{\mathrm{N}_\ell}-m_\mathrm{Z'}$ plane are presented in both the electron and muon channels. The observed upper limit on $m_\mathrm{Z'}$ reaches up to 4.42 TeV. These are the most restrictive limits to date on the mass of N$_\ell$ as a function of the Z' boson mass.

Measurement of the top quark mass using a profile likelihood approach with the lepton+jets final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The mass of the top quark is measured in 36.3 fb$^{-1}$ of LHC proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The measurement uses a sample of top quark pair candidate events containing one isolated electron or muon and at least four jets in the final state. For each event, the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a top quark pair hypothesis. A profile likelihood method is applied using up to four observables to extract the top quark mass. The top quark mass is measured to be 171.77 $\pm$ 0.37 GeV. This approach significantly improves the precision over previous measurements.

First measurement of the forward rapidity gap distribution in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

For the first time at LHC energies, the forward rapidity gap spectra from proton-lead collisions for both proton and lead dissociation processes are presented. The analysis is performed over 10.4 units of pseudorapidity at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV, almost 300 times higher than in previous measurements of diffractive production in proton-nucleus collisions. For lead dissociation processes, which correspond to the pomeron-lead event topology, the EPOS-LHC generator predictions are a factor of two below the data, but the model gives a reasonable description of the rapidity gap spectrum shape. For the pomeron-proton topology, the EPOS-LHC, QGSJET II, and HIJING predictions are all at least a factor of five lower than the data. The latter effect might be explained by a significant contribution of ultra-peripheral photoproduction events mimicking the signature of diffractive processes. These data may be of significant help in understanding the high energy limit of quantum chromodynamics and for modeling cosmic ray air showers.

Performance of the local reconstruction algorithms for the CMS hadron calorimeter with Run 2 data

A description is presented of the algorithms used to reconstruct energy deposited in the CMS hadron calorimeter during Run 2 (2015-2018) of the LHC. During Run 2, the characteristic bunch-crossing spacing for proton-proton collisions was 25 ns, which resulted in overlapping signals from adjacent crossings. The energy corresponding to a particular bunch crossing of interest is estimated using the known pulse shapes of energy depositions in the calorimeter, which are measured as functions of both energy and time. A variety of algorithms were developed to mitigate the effects of adjacent bunch crossings on local energy reconstruction in the hadron calorimeter in Run 2, and their performance is compared.

A DNN for CMS track classification and selection

The upgrade of the track classification and selection step of the CMS tracking to a Deep Neural Network is presented. The CMS tracking follows an iterative approach: tracks are reconstructed in multiple passes starting from the ones that are easiest to find and moving to the ones with more complex characteristics (lower transverse momentum, high displacement). The track classification comes into play at the end of each iteration. A classifier using a multivariate analysis is applied after each iteration and several selection criteria are defined. If a track meets the high purity requirement, its hits are removed from the hit collection, thus simplifying the later iterations, and making the track classification an integral part of the reconstruction process. Tracks passing loose selections are also saved for physics analysis usage. The CMS experiment improved the track classification starting from a parametric selection used in Run 1, moving to a Boosted Decision Tree in Run 2, and finally to a Deep Neural Network in Run 3. An overview of the Deep Neural Network training and current performance is shown.

Observation of four top quark production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The observation of the production of four top quarks in proton-proton collisions is reported, based on a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016-2018 at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Events with two same-sign, three, or four charged leptons (electrons and muons) and additional jets are analyzed. Compared to previous results in these channels, updated identification techniques for charged leptons and jets originating from the hadronization of b quarks, as well as a revised multivariate analysis strategy to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds, lead to an improved expected signal significance of 4.9 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis. Four top quark production is observed with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations, and its cross section is measured to be 17.7 $^{+3.7}_{-3.5}$ (stat) $^{+2.3}_{-1.9}$ (syst) fb, in agreement with the available standard model predictions.

Measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt charmonia in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The second-order ($v_2$) and third-order ($v_3$) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/$ψ$, as well as prompt $ψ$(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb$^{-1}$ recorded with the CMS detector. The J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. The $v_2$ and $v_3$ coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measured $v_2$ values for prompt J/$ψ$ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/$ψ$ mesons. The prompt J/$ψ$ $v_2$ values at high $p_\mathrm{T}$ are found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/$ψ$ meson $v_3$ and prompt $ψ$(2S) $v_2$ and $v_3$ values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Search for pair-produced vector-like leptons in final states with third-generation leptons and at least three b quark jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The first search is presented for vector-like leptons (VLLs) in the context of the "4321 model", an ultraviolet-complete model with the potential to explain existing B physics measurements that are in tension with standard model predictions. The analyzed data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 96.5 fb$^{-1}$, were recorded in 2017 and 2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. Final states with ${\geq}$ 3 b-tagged jets and two third-generation leptons ($ττ$, $τν_τ$, or $ν_τν_τ$) are considered. Upper limits are derived on the VLL production cross section in the VLL mass range 500-1050 GeV. The maximum likelihood fit prefers the presence of signal at the level of 2.8 standard deviations, for a representative VLL mass point of 600 GeV. As a consequence, the observed upper limits are approximately double the expected limits.

Observation of $τ$ lepton pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

We present an observation of photon-photon production of $τ$ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404 $μ$b$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The $γγ$ $\to$ $τ^+τ^-$ process is observed for $ττ$ events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is $σ(γγ$ $\to$ $τ^+τ^-)$ = 4.8 $\pm$ 0.6 (stat) $\pm$ 0.5 (syst) $μ$b, in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using $σ(γγ$ $\to$ $τ^+τ^-)$, we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton of $a_τ$ = 0.001 $^{+0.055}_{-0.089}$.

A search for decays of the Higgs boson to invisible particles in events with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for decays to invisible particles of Higgs bosons produced in association with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson, which both decay to a fully hadronic final state, has been performed using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The 95% confidence level upper limit set on the branching fraction of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to invisible particles, $\mathcal{B}$(H $\to$ inv), is 0.54 (0.39 expected), assuming standard model production cross sections. The results of this analysis are combined with previous $\mathcal{B}$(H $\to$ inv) searches carried out at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8, and 13 TeV in complementary production modes. The combined upper limit at 95% confidence level on $\mathcal{B}$(H $\to$ inv) is 0.15 (0.08 expected).

Search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and additional Higgs bosons in the e$μ$ final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and potential additional Higgs bosons with a mass in the range 110-160 GeV to an e$^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ pair is presented. The search is performed with a proton-proton collision dataset at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. No excess is observed for the Higgs boson. The observed (expected) upper limit on the e$^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ branching fraction for it is determined to be 4.4 (4.7) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ at 95% confidence level, the most stringent limit set thus far from direct searches. The largest excess of events over the expected background in the full mass range of the search is observed at an e$^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ invariant mass of approximately 146 GeV with a local (global) significance of 3.8 (2.8) standard deviations.

Search for a high-mass dimuon resonance produced in association with b quark jets at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for high-mass dimuon resonance production in association with one or more b quark jets is presented. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Model-independent limits are derived on the number of signal events with exactly one or more than one b quark jet. Results are also interpreted in a lepton-flavor-universal model with Z$'$ boson couplings to a bb quark pair ($g_\mathrm{b}$), an sb quark pair ($g_\mathrm{b}δ_\mathrm{bs}$), and any same-flavor charged lepton ($g_\ell$) or neutrino pair ($g_ν$), with $\left|g_ν\right| = \left|g_\ell\right|$. For a Z$'$ boson with a mass $m_{\mathrm{Z}'}$ = 350 GeV (2 TeV) and $\left|δ_\mathrm{bs}\right|$ $\lt$ 0.25, the majority of the parameter space with 0.0057 $\lt$ $\left|g_\ell\right|$ $\lt$ 0.35 (0.25 $\lt$ $\left|g_\ell\right|$ $\lt$ 0.43) and 0.0079 $\lt$ $\left|g_\mathrm{b}\right|$ $\lt$ 0.46 (0.34 $\lt$ $\left|g_\mathrm{b}\right|$ $\lt$ 0.57) is excluded at 95% confidence level. Finally, constraints are set on a Z$'$ model with parameters consistent with low-energy b $\to$ s$\ell\ell$ measurements. In this scenario, most of the allowed parameter space is excluded for a Z$'$ boson with 350 $\lt m_{\mathrm{Z}'}$ $\lt$ 500 GeV, while the constraints are less stringent for higher $m_{\mathrm{Z}'}$ hypotheses. This is the first dedicated search at the LHC for a high-mass dimuon resonance produced in association with multiple b quark jets, and the constraints obtained on models with this signature are the most stringent to date.

Search for new physics in multijet events with at least one photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

A search for new physics in final states consisting of at least one photon, multiple jets, and large missing transverse momentum is presented, using proton-proton collision events at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC from 2016 to 2018. The events are divided into mutually exclusive bins characterized by the missing transverse momentum, the number of jets, the number of b-tagged jets, and jets consistent with the presence of hadronically decaying W, Z, or Higgs bosons. The observed data are found to be consistent with the prediction from standard model processes. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of pair production of supersymmetric particles via strong and electroweak interactions. Depending on the details of the signal models, gluinos and squarks of masses up to 2.35 and 1.43 TeV, respectively, and electroweakinos of masses up to 1.23 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Measurement and QCD analysis of double-differential inclusive jet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}$ and the absolute jet rapidity $\lvert y \rvert$. The anti-$k_\mathrm{T}$ clustering algorithm is used with distance parameter of 0.4 (0.7) in a phase space region with jet $p_\mathrm{T}$ from 97 GeV up to 3.1 TeV and $\lvert y \rvert$ $\lt$ 2.0. Data collected with the CMS detector are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb$^{-1}$ (33.5 fb$^{-1}$). The measurement is used in a comprehensive QCD analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order, which results in significant improvement in the accuracy of the parton distributions in the proton. Simultaneously, the value of the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass is extracted as $α_\mathrm{S}$(Z) = 0.1170 $\pm$ 0.0019. For the first time, these data are used in a standard model effective field theory analysis at next-to-leading order, where parton distributions and the QCD parameters are extracted simultaneously with imposed constraints on the Wilson coefficient $c_1$ of 4-quark contact interactions. Note added: in the Addendum to this paper, available as Appendix B in this document, an improved value of $α_\mathrm{S}$(Z) = 0.1166 $\pm$ 0.0017 has been extracted. This result supersedes the number in the above abstract of the original publication.

Measurement of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ charge asymmetry in events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks decaying to a single lepton and jets is presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The selection is optimized for top quarks produced with large Lorentz boosts, resulting in nonisolated leptons and overlapping jets. The top quark charge asymmetry is measured for events with a $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ invariant mass larger than 750 GeV and corrected for detector and acceptance effects using a binned maximum likelihood fit. The measured top quark charge asymmetry of (0.42 $_{-0.69}^{+0.64}$)% is in good agreement with the standard model prediction at next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamic perturbation theory with next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections. The result is also presented for two invariant mass ranges, 750-900 and $\gt$ 900 GeV.

Search for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of electrons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of electrons (e$^+$e$^-$) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The data set was collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis uses event categories targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. The observed upper limit on the Higgs boson branching fraction to an electron pair is 3.0 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ (3.0 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ expected) at the 95% confidence level, which is the most stringent limit on this branching fraction to date.

Search for exotic Higgs boson decays H $\to$ $\mathcal{A}\mathcal{A}$ $\to$ 4$γ$ with events containing two merged diphotons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

We present the first direct search for exotic Higgs boson decays H $\to$ $\mathcal{A}\mathcal{A}$, $\mathcal{A}$ $\to$ $γγ$ in events with two photonlike objects. The hypothetical particle $\mathcal{A}$ is a low-mass spin-0 particle decaying promptly to a merged diphoton reconstructed as a single photonlike object. We analyze the data collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb$^{-1}$. No excess above the estimated background is found. We set upper limits on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$(H $\to$ $\mathcal{A}\mathcal{A}$ $\to$ 4$γ$) of (0.9-3.3) $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ at 95% confidence level for masses of $\mathcal{A}$ in the range 0.1-1.2 GeV.
