Measurement of Z$γ$ production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV and constraints on neutral triple gauge couplings

A measurement of the Z$γ$ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV is presented. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.8 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2022 are used. Events with an oppositely charged pair of muons or electrons, with an invariant mass corresponding to a Z boson, together with an isolated photon are selected. The measured fiducial cross section for the combined electron and muon channels is 1.896 $\pm$ 0.033 (stat) $\pm$ 0.05 (syst) $\pm$ 0.006 (theo) pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 1.922 $\pm$ 0.094 pb. Constraints on neutral triple gauge couplings generated by dimension-8 operators in a recently proposed effective field theory framework are determined for the first time.

Search for heavy pseudoscalar and scalar bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for pseudoscalar or scalar bosons decaying to a top quark pair ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) in final states with one or two charged leptons is presented. The analyzed proton-proton collision data was recorded at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The invariant mass $m_\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ of the reconstructed $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ system and variables sensitive to its spin and parity are used to discriminate against the standard model $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ background. Interference between pseudoscalar or scalar boson production and the standard model $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ continuum is included, leading to peak-dip structures in the $m_\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ distribution. An excess of the data above the background prediction, based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations, is observed near the kinematic $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production threshold, while good agreement is found for high $m_\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$. The data are consistent with the background prediction if the contribution from the production of a color-singlet ${}^1\mathrm{S}_0^{[1]}$ $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ quasi-bound state $η_\mathrm{t}$, predicted by nonrelativistic QCD, is added. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the coupling between the pseudoscalar or scalar bosons and the top quark for boson masses in the range 365$-$1000 GeV, relative widths between 0.5 and 25%, and two background scenarios with or without $η_\mathrm{t}$ contribution.

Search for new physics in jet multiplicity patterns of multilepton events at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A first search for beyond the standard model physics in jet multiplicity patterns of multilepton events is presented, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The search uses observed jet multiplicity distributions in one-, two-, and four-lepton events to explore possible enhancements in jet production rate in three-lepton events with and without bottom quarks. The data are found to be consistent with the standard model expectation. The results are interpreted in terms of supersymmetric production of electroweak chargino-neutralino superpartners with cascade decays terminating in prompt hadronic $R$-parity violating interactions.

Search for $γ$H production and constraints on the Yukawa couplings of light quarks to the Higgs boson

A search for $γ$H production is performed with data from the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ at a proton-proton center-of-mass collision energy of 13 TeV. The analysis focuses on the topology of a boosted Higgs boson recoiling against a high-energy photon. The final states of H $\to$ $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$ and H $\to$ 4$\ell$ are analyzed. This study examines effective HZ$γ$ and H$γγ$ anomalous couplings within the context of an effective field theory. In this approach, the production cross section is constrained to be $σ_{γ\text{H}}$ $\lt$ 16.4 fb at 95% confidence level (CL). Simultaneous constraints on four anomalous couplings involving HZ$γ$ and H$γγ$ are provided. Additionally, the production rate for H $\to$ 4$\ell$ is examined to assess potential enhancements in the Yukawa couplings between light quarks and the Higgs boson. Assuming the standard model values for the Yukawa couplings of the bottom and top quarks, the following simultaneous constraints are obtained: $κ_\text{u}$ = (0.0 $\pm$ 1.5) $\times$ 10$^{3}$, $κ_\text{d}$ = (0.0 $^{+6.7}_{-6.8}$) $\times$ 10$^{2}$, $κ_\text{s}$ = 0 $^{+30}_{-32}$, and $κ_\text{c}$ = 0.0 $^{+2.3}_{-2.8}$. This rules out the hypothesis that up- or down-type quarks in the first or second generation have the same Yukawa couplings as those in the third generation, with a CL greater than 95%.

Development of systematic uncertainty-aware neural network trainings for binned-likelihood analyses at the LHC

We propose a neural network training method capable of accounting for the effects of systematic variations of the data model in the training process and describe its extension towards neural network multiclass classification. The procedure is evaluated on the realistic case of the measurement of Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion in the $ττ$ decay channel at the CMS experiment. The neural network output functions are used to infer the signal strengths for inclusive production of Higgs bosons as well as for their production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. We observe improvements of 12 and 16% in the uncertainty in the signal strengths for gluon and vector-boson fusion, respectively, compared with a conventional neural network training based on cross-entropy.

Search for a cH signal in the associated production of at least one charm quark with a Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This paper presents the first search for a cH signal sensitive to the coupling of the charm quark (c) to the Higgs boson (H) in the associated production of at least one charm quark with a Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The results are based on a data set of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Assuming the standard model (SM) rates for all other Higgs boson production processes, the observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level on the cH signal strength is 243 (355) times the SM prediction. Under the same assumption, the observed (expected) allowed interval on the Higgs boson to charm quark coupling modifier, $κ_\mathrm{c}$, is $\lvert κ_\mathrm{c} \rvert$ $\lt$ 38.1 ($\lvert κ_\mathrm{c} \rvert$ $\lt$ 72.5) at 95% confidence level.

Search for heavy H$γ$ and Z$γ$ resonances with a bottom quark-antiquark pair in the final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson (H) or a Z boson and a photon ($γ$), with the H or Z bosons decaying to a bottom quark-antiquark pair ($\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$) is presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The analyzed events contain a photon and a massive large-radius jet originating from a Lorentz-boosted $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$ system. An advanced transformer-based algorithm classifies jets according to their substructure and quark flavors, forming a tagger that identifies jets as candidates from H/Z $\to$ $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$ decays. A set of parametric functions is used to fit the photon-jet invariant mass spectrum and to extract potential signals. No significant excess is observed above the standard model expectations. The results set upper limits at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and the branching fraction for spin-1 H$γ$ resonances and spin-0 Z$γ$ resonances, below 0.1 and 0.3 fb, respectively, representing the most stringent limits to date.

A method for correcting the substructure of multiprong jets using the Lund jet plane

Many analyses at the CERN LHC exploit the substructure of jets to identify heavy resonances produced with high momenta that decay into multiple quarks and/or gluons. This paper presents a new technique for correcting the substructure of simulated large-radius jets from multiprong decays. The technique is based on reclustering the jet constituents into several subjets such that each subjet represents a single prong, and separately correcting the radiation pattern in the Lund jet plane of each subjet using a correction derived from data. The data presented here correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment between 2016$-$2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The correction procedure improves the agreement between data and simulation for several different substructure observables of multiprong jets. This technique establishes, for the first time, a robust calibration for the substructure of jets with four or more prongs, enabling future measurements and searches for new phenomena containing these signatures.

Performance of heavy-flavour jet identification in Lorentz-boosted topologies in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements in the highly Lorentz-boosted regime provoke increased interest in probing the Higgs boson properties and in searching for particles beyond the standard model at the LHC. In the CMS Collaboration, various boosted-object tagging algorithms, designed to identify hadronic jets originating from a massive particle decaying to $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ or $\mathrm{c\overline{c}}$, have been developed and deployed across a range of physics analyses. This paper highlights their performance on simulated events, and summarizes novel calibration techniques using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV during the 2016$-$2018 LHC data-taking period. Three dedicated methods are used for the calibration in multijet events, leveraging either machine learning techniques, the presence of muons within energetic boosted jets, or the reconstruction of hadronically decaying high-energy Z bosons. The calibration results, obtained through a combination of these approaches, are presented and discussed.

Study of same-sign W boson scattering and anomalous couplings in events with one tau lepton from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A first study is presented of the cross section for the scattering of same-sign W boson pairs via the detection of a $τ$ lepton. The data from proton-proton collisions at the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Events were selected that contain two jets with large pseudorapidity and large invariant mass, one $τ$ lepton, one light lepton (e or $μ$), and significant missing transverse momentum. The measured cross section for electroweak same-sign WW scattering is 1.44 $^{+0.63}_{-0.56}$ times the standard model prediction. In addition, a search is presented for the indirect effects of processes beyond the standard model via the effective field theory framework, in terms of dimension-6 and dimension-8 operators.

Search for top squarks in final states with many light-flavor jets and 0, 1, or 2 charged leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Several new physics models including versions of supersymmetry (SUSY) characterized by $R$-parity violation (RPV) or with additional hidden sectors predict the production of events with top quarks, low missing transverse momentum, and many additional quarks or gluons. The results of a search for top squarks decaying to two top quarks and six additional light-flavor quarks or gluons are reported. The search employs a novel machine learning method for background estimation from control samples in data using decorrelated discriminators. The search is performed using events with 0, 1, or 2 electrons or muons in conjunction with at least six jets. No requirement is placed on the magnitude of the missing transverse momentum. The result is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to 138 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016$-$2018. The data are used to determine upper limits on the top squark pair production cross section in the frameworks of RPV and stealth SUSY. Models with top squark masses less than 700 (930) GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for RPV (stealth) SUSY scenarios.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a $τ$ lepton pair in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for dark matter particles produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying into a pair of $τ$ leptons is performed using data collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector. The analysis is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2017$-$2018. No significant excess over the expected standard model background is observed. This result is interpreted within the frameworks of the 2HDM+a and baryonic Z$'$ benchmark simplified models. The 2HDM+a model is a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model featuring a heavy pseudoscalar with an additional light pseudoscalar. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction for each of these two simplified models. Heavy pseudoscalar boson masses between 400 and 700 GeV are excluded for a light pseudoscalar mass of 100 GeV. For the baryonic Z$'$ model, a statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data set of 36 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2016. In this model, Z$'$ boson masses up to 1050 GeV are excluded for a dark matter particle mass of 1 GeV.

Search for a heavy pseudoscalar Higgs boson decaying to a 125 GeV Higgs boson and a Z boson in final states with two tau and two light leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for a heavy pseudoscalar Higgs boson, A, decaying to a 125 GeV Higgs boson h and a Z boson is presented. The h boson is identified via its decay to a pair of tau leptons, while the Z boson is identified via its decay to a pair of electrons or muons. The search targets the production of the A boson via the gluon-gluon fusion process, gg $\to$ A, and in association with bottom quarks, $\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$A. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. Constraints are set on the product of the cross sections of the A production mechanisms and the A $\to$ Zh decay branching fraction. The observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level ranges from 0.049 (0.060) pb to 1.02 (0.79) pb for the gg $\to$ A process and from 0.053 (0.059) pb to 0.79 (0.61) pb for the $\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$A process in the probed range of the A boson mass, $m_\text{A}$, from 225 GeV to 1 TeV. The results of the search are used to constrain parameters within the ${\text{M}_{\text{h,EFT}}^{\text{125}}}$ benchmark scenario of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. Values of $\tanβ$ below 2.2 are excluded in this scenario at 95% confidence level for all $m_\text{A}$ values in the range from 225 to 350 GeV.

Search for the rare decay D$^0$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

A search for the rare decay D$^0$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-$ is reported using proton-proton collision events at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV collected by the CMS detector in 2022$-$2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 64.5 fb$^{-1}$. This is the first analysis to use a newly developed inclusive dimuon trigger, expanding the scope of the CMS flavor physics program. The search uses D$^0$ mesons obtained from D$^{*+}$ $\to$ D$^0π^+$ decays. No significant excess is observed. A limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}$(D$^0$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-$) $\lt$ 2.4 $\times$ 10$^{-9}$ at 95% confidence level is set. This is the most stringent upper limit set on any flavor changing neutral current decay in the charm sector.

Search for dark matter production in association with a single top quark in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the production of a single top quark in association with invisible particles is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. In this search, a flavor-changing neutral current produces a single top quark or antiquark and an invisible state nonresonantly. The invisible state consists of a hypothetical spin-1 particle acting as a new mediator and decaying to two spin-1/2 dark matter candidates. The analysis searches for events in which the top quark or antiquark decays hadronically. No significant excess of events compatible with that signature is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the masses of the spin-1 mediator and the dark matter candidates, and are compared to constraints from the dark matter relic density measurements. In a vector (axial-vector) coupling scenario, masses of the spin-1 mediator are excluded up to 1.85 (1.85) TeV with an expectation of 2.0 (2.0) TeV, whereas masses of the dark matter candidates are excluded up to 0.75 (0.55) TeV with an expectation of 0.85 (0.65) TeV.

Observation of $Λ$ hyperon local polarization in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The polarization of the $Λ$ and $\overlineΛ$ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data were obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 186.0 $\pm$ 6.5 nb$^{-1}$. A significant azimuthal dependence of the hyperon polarization, characterized by the second-order Fourier sine coefficient $P_{z,s2}$, is observed. The $P_{z,s2}$ values decrease as a function of charged particle multiplicity, but increase with transverse momentum. A hydrodynamic model that describes the observed $P_{z,s2}$ values in nucleus-nucleus collisions by introducing vorticity effects does not reproduce either the sign or the magnitude of the pPb results. These observations pose a challenge to the current theoretical implementation of spin polarization in heavy ion collisions and offer new insights into the origin of spin polarization in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Measurements of inclusive and differential Higgs boson production cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV in the H $\to$ $γγ$ decay channel

Inclusive and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV are measured using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb$^{-1}$. Events with the diphoton final state are selected, and the measured inclusive fiducial cross section is $σ_\text{fid}$ = 74 $\pm$ 11 (stat) $^{+5}_{-4}$ (syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 67.8 $\pm$ 3.8 fb. Differential cross sections are measured as functions of several observables: the Higgs boson transverse momentum and rapidity, the number of associated jets, and the transverse momentum of the leading jet in the event. Within the uncertainties, the differential cross sections agree with the standard model predictions.

Probing gluon fluctuations in nuclei with the first energy-dependent measurement of incoherent J/$ψ$ photoproduction in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions

Incoherent J/$ψ$ photoproduction in heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) provides a sensitive probe of localized, fluctuating gluonic structures within heavy nuclei. This study reports the first measurement of the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy ($W_{γ\mathrm{N}}$) dependence of this process in PbPb UPCs at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, using 1.52 nb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the CMS experiment. The measurement covers a wide $W_{γ\mathrm{N}}$ range of $\approx$ 40-400 GeV, probing gluons carrying a fraction $x$ of nucleon momentum down to an unexplored region of 6.5 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$. Compared to baseline predictions neglecting nuclear effects, the measured cross sections exhibit significantly greater suppression at lower $x$. Additionally, the ratio of incoherent to coherent photoproduction is found to be constant across the probed $W_{γ\mathrm{N}}$ and $x$ range, disfavoring the establishment of the black disk limit. This study provides critical insights into the $x$-dependent evolution of fluctuating gluonic structures within nuclei and calls for further advancements in theoretical models incorporating nuclear shadowing and gluon saturation.
