Edge burst effect and scale-free localization

The non-Hermitian edge burst is a phenomenon observed in non-Hermitian quantum dynamics, characterized by a significant accumulation of loss at the boundaries of a system. We present an example of the edge burst effect in a lossy lattice with bipolar non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). By introducing a weak coupling between two such non-Hermitian lattices, we demonstrate that the system exhibits bipolar scale-free localization. Through an analysis of local decay distributions and their sensitivity to system parameters, we confirm the occurrence of the edge burst effect in the system displaying scale-free localization. Our findings support the notion that the skin effect is not a necessary condition for the edge burst effect.

Subskin modes in a nonlinear non-Hermitian system

Subskin modes are distinct from conventional skin modes as they localize not at the system's edge but rather below the edge. Unlike skin modes, where a substantial number of them can accumulate at the boundaries of a system due to the non-Hermitian skin effect, subskin modes are typically limited to one or a few and emerge only when the size of the system and the couplings are related in a very specific way. The nonlinear interaction can lift the restrictions on the couplings for the formation of these modes. The findings reveal the potential of subskin modes for practical applications and new research in non-Hermitian systems.

Nonlinear skin modes and fixed points

We investigate a one-dimensional tight-binding lattice with asymmetrical couplings and various type of nonlinearities to study nonlinear non-Hermitian skin effect. Our focus is on the exploration of nonlinear skin modes through a fixed-point perspective. The nonlinear interactions are shown to have no impact on the spectral region in the semi-infinite system; however, they induce considerable changes when boundaries are present. The spectrum under open boundary conditions is found not to be a subset of the corresponding spectrum under the semi-infinite boundary conditions. We identify distinctive features of nonlinear skin modes, such as degeneracy, and power-energy discontinuity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a family of localized modes that are neither skin nor scale-free localized modes is formed with the introduction of a coupling impurity. Additionally, we show that an impurity can induce discrete dark and anti-dark solitons.

Non-Hermitian edge burst without skin localizations

In a class of non-Hermitian quantum walk in lossy lattices with open boundary conditions, an unexpected peak in the distribution of the decay probabilities appears at the edge, dubbed edge burst. It is proposed that the edge burst is originated jointly from the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) and the imaginary gaplessness of the spectrum [Wen-Tan Xue et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 120401 (2022)]. Using a particular one-dimensional lossy lattice with a nonuniform loss rate, we show that the edge burst can occur even in the absence of skin localization. Furthermore, we discuss that the edge burst may not appear if the spectrum satisfies the imaginary gaplesness condition. Aside from its fundamental importance, by removing the restrictions on observing the edge burst effect, our results open the door to broader design space for future applications of the edge burst effect.

Quantum inverted harmonic potential

We consider a non-interacting gas under the inverted harmonic potential and present infinitely degenerate non-stationary orthogonal states. We discuss that it has an infinite entropy at the absolute zero temperature. We show that uncertainty in position of a particle under the inverted harmonic potential can be zero as there exists a solution which asymptotes to a Dirac delta function. We obtain a new free particle wave packet using the eigenstates for the inverted harmonic potential. It has unique self-focusing feature and can be used as focusing beam without a lens in optical systems where paraxial approximation is used.

Nonlinear non-Hermitian skin effect

Distant boundaries in linear non-Hermitian lattices can dramatically change energy eigenvalues and corresponding eigenstates in a nonlocal way. This effect is known as non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). Combining non-Hermitian skin effect with nonlinear effects can give rise to a host of novel phenomenas, which may be used for nonlinear structure designs. Here we study nonlinear non-Hermitian skin effect and explore nonlocal and substantial effects of edges on stationary nonlinear solutions. We show that fractal and continuum bands arise in a long lattice governed by a nonreciprocal discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We show that stationary solutions are localized at the edge in the continuum band. We consider a non-Hermitian Ablowitz-Ladik model and show that nonlinear exceptional point disappears if the lattice is infinitely long.

Quasi-stationary solutions in non-Hermitian systems

Eigenstates exhibit localization at an open edge in a non-Hermitian lattice due to non-Hermitian skin effect. We here explore another interesting feature of non-Hermitian skin effect and predict quasi-stationary solutions, which are approximately time-independent. We show that the transition from such states to eigenstates is dramatically non-perturbative. We discuss that mathematically extending the boundary of a long non-Hermitian lattice to infinity can lead to nontrivial solution. We consider a non-Hermitian variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and predict non-topological but robust quasi-stationary zero energy modes.

Anomalous features of non-Hermitian topological states

Topological states in non-Hermitian systems are known to exhibit some anomalous features. Here, we find two new anomalous features of non-Hermitian topological states. We consider a one dimensional nonreciprocal Hamiltonian and show that topological robustness can be practically lost for a linear combination of topological eigenstates in non-Hermitian systems due to the non-Hermitian skin effect. We consider a two dimensional non-Hermitian Chern insulator and show that chirality of topological states can be broken at some parameters of the Hamiltonan. This implies that the topological states are no longer immune to backscattering in 2D.

Nonlinear waves in an anti-Hermitian lattice with cubic nonlinearity

In an anti-Hermitian linear system, all energy eigenvalues are purely imaginary and the corresponding eigenvectors are orthogonal. This implies that no stationary state is available in such systems. We consider an anti-Hermitian lattice with cubic nonlinearity and explore novel nonlinear stationary modes. We discuss that relative population is conserved in a nonreciprocal tight binding lattice with periodical boundary conditions as opposed to parity-time (PT) symmetric lattices. We study nonlinear nonrecipocal dimer, triple and quadrimer models and construct stationary nonlinear modes.

Topological states in non-Hermitian two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

A non-Hermitian topological insulator with real spectrum is interesting in the theory of non-Hermitian extension of topological systems. We find an experimentally realizable example of a two dimensional non-Hermitian topological insulator with real spectrum. We consider two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with gain and loss. We introduce non-Hermitian polarization vector to explore topological phase and show that topological edge states in the band gap exist in the system.

Topological states at exceptional points

We consider an N-level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with an exceptional point of order N. We define adiabatic equivalence in such systems and explore topological phase. We show that the topological exceptional states appear at the interface of topologically distinct systems. We discuss that topological states appear even in closed systems. We explore dynamical robustness of exceptional edge states.

Non-Hermitian anomalous skin effect

A non-Hermitian topological insulator is fundamentally different from conventional topological insulators. The non-Hermitian skin effect arises in a nonreciprocal tight binding lattice with open edges. In this case, not only topological states but also bulk states are localized around the edges of the nonreciprocal system. We discuss that controllable switching from topological edge states into topological extended states in a chiral symmetric non-Hermitian system is possible. We show that the skin depth decreases with non-reciprocity for bulk states but increases with it for topological zero energy states.

State conversions around exceptional points

We study state conversion in parity-time (PT) symmetry broken non-Hermitian two level system. We construct a theory and explain underlying mechanism for state conversion and define adiabatic evolutions in non-Hermitian systems. The adiabatic theorem can be used if initial state is an instantaneous eigenstate in Hermitian systems. We show that the system can adiabatically follow the modulationally stable instantaneous eigenstate sooner or later, regardless of initial state if the system parameters are varied slowly in non-Hermitian systems. We discuss the topological feature of dynamical circling in the parameter space.

Spontaneous topological pumping in non-Hermitian systems

We introduce modulational instability in non-Hermitian systems to study state conversion of topological edge states. We show that state conversion in non-Hermitian systems leads to topological pumping, which is a way of transferring topological edge state from one edge to the opposite edge. In contrast to Hermitian systems, topological pumping can occur spontaneously in non-Hermitian systems.

Robust Bulk States

We predict topologically robust zero energy bulk states in a disordered tight binding lattice. We explore a new kind of order and discuss that zero energy states exist in a system iff its Hamiltonian is noninvertible. We show that they are robust against any kind of disorder as long as the disordered Hamiltonian is noninvertible, too.

Pseudo topological insulators

We predict pseudo topological insulators that have been previously overlooked. We determine some conditions under which robust pseudo topological edge states appear and illustrate our idea on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with extra chiral symmetry breaking potentials. We discuss that pseudo topological insulating phase transition occurs without band gap closing.

Spontaneously Broken Particle-Hole Symmetry in Photonic Graphene with Gain and Loss

We consider particle-hole symmetric photonic graphene with balanced gain and loss. We show that edge states with purely imaginary eigenvalues appear along the zigzag edge. We propose an idea that these edge states are protected by spontaneously broken particle-hole symmetry. We discuss that the edge states are topological in the sense that the exceptional rings are robust against symmetry protecting disorder. If the disorder is too strong to restore the spontaneously broken particle-hole symmetry, then such protection of the edge states is lost.

Stable topological edge states in a non-Hermitian four-band model

We introduce a one dimensional non-Hermitian four band tight binding lattice system. We find stable topological edge states protected by particle-hole and parity-time symmetries. We show that topological phase appears in the system. We discuss that the system can also be used as a topological laser if the gain and loss positions in a unit cell are judiciously arranged.
