Femtoscopy Measurement with S$π$RIT TPC in Radioactive BeamHeavy-ion Collisions

Femtoscopy is a powerful tool for exploring the dynamic emitting structure in heavy-ion collisions, while radioactive beam heavy-ion collisions enable the investigation of nuclear matter under extreme isospin conditions. Here, we successfully perform femtoscopy measurements using the S$π$RIT Time Projection Chamber (TPC). A dedicated correction scheme for track merging and splitting is proposed, which is well applicable to rectangular TPCs housed inside dipole magnets and effectively improves the reconstructed correlation functions at small relative momenta. Focusing on the proton-proton (p-p) correlation function in the 270 MeV/u $^{132}\text{Sn}+^{124}\text{Sn}$ system, we successfully apply the track merging and splitting correction; additionally, the TPC angular acceptance exhibits a negligible impact on the correlation function. A systematic uncertainty quantification framework is established. The experimental results of the p-p correlation function confirm the feasibility of the S$π$RIT TPC for femtoscopy measurements and provide technical support for high-precision femtoscopy studies using rectangular TPCs in radioactive beam heavy-ion collisions.

Spectroscopy of $^{11}$Be from the $^{10}$Be($d,p$) reaction measured in inverse kinematics by the AT-TPC in SOLARIS

The spectroscopy of $^{11}$Be is explored using the $^{10}$Be$(d,p)$$^{11}$Be transfer reaction performed in inverse kinematics at $9.6\,\MeV/u$ using the Active Target Time Projection Chamber (AT-TPC) inside the SOLARIS solenoid. This experiment is the first attempt at coupling the AT-TPC with SOLARIS to perform a high luminosity transfer reaction measurement without compromising excitation energy and scattering angle resolutions. The angular momentum transfer for states up to $3.40\,\MeV$ are determined from distorted-wave Born approximation analysis of the measured angular distributions, from which the corresponding spectroscopic factors are deduced. These factors are compared with those from various shell model interactions, and those for the $3.40\,\MeV$ state are consistent with a positive parity assignment. Recent \textit{ab initio} no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculations with various nucleon-nucleon interactions are presented for the low-lying positive parity states of $^{11}$Be. The excitation energies produced using the Daejeon16 interaction are in good agreement with those found from both this experiment and the literature, thus supporting a positive parity assignment. The $3.40\,\MeV$ state, if assigned a tentative $J^π=3/2^+$, would then correspond to the second excited state of the $K^P=1/2^+$ one-neutron halo ground state rotational band also predicted from such NCCI calculations.

Large amplification of the isospin-dependence of proton emitting source size in radioactive heavy-ion collisions: a signal of n-p correlation

We report proton-proton correlation function measurements in central $^{132}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn and $^{108}$Sn+$^{112}$Sn collisions at 270 MeV/nucleon. The proton emitting source sizes are extracted for the systems by using femtoscopic imaging technique. The fast dynamic core radius for the neutron-rich system is found to be $2.22 \pm 0.13\ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.07\ \text{(syst.)}$ fm, which is approximately 24\% larger than that for the neutron-deficient system, $1.74 \pm 0.08\ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.05\ \text{(syst.)}$ fm. This difference is an order of magnitude larger than the $\sim$3\% difference in the ground-state charge radii of the projectile nuclei. Transport model simulations based on mean-field dynamics cannot reproduce this amplification. The observation reveals a beyond-mean-field mechanism associated to short-range neutron-proton correlations, which dynamically enhance the proton emitting source in the neutron-rich environment. Our results demonstrate that heavy-ion collisions induced by radioactive beam, combined with femtoscopic precision, provide a new hadronic probe of short-range correlation, and that careful treatment of the beyond-mean-field interactions are required in modeling such processes.

Observation of a broad $p$-wave resonant state in $^{9}$He

We report on the two-body invariant-mass spectroscopy of $^{9}$He, populated via the 1$p$1$n$ knockout reaction from the two-neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Li at $\sim$250 MeV/nucleon. A broad $p$-wave resonant state of $^{9}$He was observed at 1.28(1) MeV with a width of 0.82(4) MeV.

Valence $1s-0d$ proton vacancy of the $^{32}$Si ground state

The $^{32}$Si($^3$He,$d$)$^{33}$P reaction was studied in inverse kinematics at 6.3~MeV/$u$. States in $^{33}$P corresponding to the proton $1s-0d$ single-particle orbitals were identified up to $\sim$4.5 MeV in excitation energy. The ($^{3}$He,$d$) spectroscopic factors were determined from Distorted Wave Born Approximation calculations. When combined with complementary neutron-adding data, the $1s-0d$ proton vacancies in the $^{32}$Si ground state were extracted. In conjunction with a re-analysis of data from previous single-particle measurements, the trends in proton and neutron vacancy were explored across the $^{28,30,32,34}$Si isotopes. Both proton and neutron vacancy data show gradual changes in their occupancies. The proton $1s_{1/2}$ orbitals in $^{32}$Si and $^{34}$Si are both consistent with being empty. The ground-state nucleon distributions are described by shell-model calculations constrained to the $1s-0d$ model space.

Evolution of two-neutrons configuration from 11Li to 13Li

In this work we investigate the two-neutron decay of 13Li and of the excited states of 11Li populated via one-proton removal from 14Be and 12Be, respectively. A phenomenological model is used to describe the decay of 11Li and 13Li. While the first one displays important sequential components, the second one appears dominated by the direct two-neutron decay. A microscopic three-body model is used to extract information on the spatial configuration of the emitted neutrons before the decay and shows that the average distance between the neutrons increases going from 11Li to 13Li.

Near-threshold dipole strength in {^{10}}Be with isoscalar character

Isoscalar dipole transitions are a distinctive fingerprint of cluster structures. A {1^-} resonance at 7.27(10) MeV, located just below the α-emission threshold, has been observed in the deuteron inelastic scattering reactions off 10Be. The deformation lengths of the excited states in 10Be below 9 MeV have been inferred from the differential cross sections using coupled channel calculations. This observed {1^-} resonance has isoscalar characteristics and exhausts approximately 5{\%}-15{\%} of the isoscalar dipole energy-weighted sum rule, providing evidence for pronounced α cluster structure in 10Be. The Gamow coupled channel approach supports this interpretation and suggests the near-threshold effect might be playing an important role in this excitation energy domain. The α+α+n+n four-body calculation reproduces the observed enhanced dipole strength, implying that the four-body cluster structure is essential to describe the {1^-} states in 10Be.

Evolution of the nuclear spin-orbit splitting explored via the $^{32}$Si($d$,$p$)$^{33}$Si reaction using SOLARIS

The spin-orbit splitting between neutron 1$p$ orbitals at $^{33}$Si has been deduced using the single-neutron-adding ($d$,$p$) reaction in inverse kinematics with a beam of $^{32}$Si, a long-lived radioisotope. Reaction products were analyzed by the newly implemented SOLARIS spectrometer at the reaccelerated-beam facility at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The measurements show reasonable agreement with shell-model calculations that incorporate modern cross-shell interactions, but they contradict the prediction of proton density depletion based on relativistic mean-field theory. The evolution of the neutron 1$p$-shell orbitals is systematically studied using the present and existing data in the isotonic chains of $N=17$, 19, and 21. In each case, a smooth decrease in the separation of the $1p_{3/2}$-$1p_{1/2}$ orbitals is seen as the respective $p$-orbitals approach zero binding, suggesting that the finite nuclear potential strongly influences the evolution of nuclear structure in this region.

Mass, spectroscopy and two-neutron decay of $^{16}$Be

The structure and decay of the most neutron-rich beryllium isotope, $^{16}$Be, has been investigated following proton knockout from a high-energy $^{17}$B beam. Two relatively narrow resonances were observed for the first time, with energies of $0.84(3)$ and $2.15(5)$ MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold and widths of $0.32(8)$ and $0.95(15)$ MeV respectively. These were assigned to be the ground ($J^π=0^+$) and first excited ($2^+$) state, with $E_x=1.31(6)$ MeV. The mass excess of $^{16}$Be was thus deduced to be $56.93(13)$ MeV, some $0.5$ MeV more bound than the only previous measurement. Both states were observed to decay by direct two-neutron emission. Calculations incorporating the evolution of the wavefunction during the decay as a genuine three-body process reproduced the principal characteristics of the neutron-neutron energy spectra for both levels, indicating that the ground state exhibits a strong spatially compact dineutron component, while the 2$^+$ level presents a far more diffuse neutron-neutron distribution.

Constraining nucleon effective masses with flow and stopping observables from the S$π$RIT experiment

Properties of the nuclear equation of state (EoS) can be probed by measuring the dynamical properties of nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this study, we present the directed flow ($v_1$), elliptic flow ($v_2$) and stopping (VarXZ) measured in fixed target Sn + Sn collisions at 270 AMeV with the S$π$RIT Time Projection Chamber. We perform Bayesian analyses in which EoS parameters are varied simultaneously within the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics-Skyrme (ImQMD-Sky) transport code to obtain a multivariate correlated constraint. The varied parameters include symmetry energy, $S_0$, and slope of the symmetry energy, $L$, at saturation density, isoscalar effective mass, $m_{s}^*/m_{N}$, isovector effective mass, $m_{v}^{*}/m_{N}$ and the in-medium cross-section enhancement factor $η$. We find that the flow and VarXZ observables are sensitive to the splitting of proton and neutron effective masses and the in-medium cross-section. Comparisons of ImQMD-Sky predictions to the S$π$RIT data suggest a narrow range of preferred values for $m_{s}^*/m_{N}$, $m_{v}^{*}/m_{N}$ and $η$.

Strong evidence for 9N and the limits of existence of atomic nuclei

The boundaries of the Chart of Nuclides contain exotic isotopes that possess extreme proton-toneutron asymmetries. Here we report on strong evidence of 9N, one of the most exotic proton-rich isotopes where more than one half of its constitute nucleons are unbound. With seven protons and two neutrons, this extremely proton-rich system would represent the first-known example of a ground-state five-proton emitter. The invariant-mass spectrum of its decay products can be fit with two peaks whose energies are consistent with the theoretical predictions of an open-quantum-system approach, however we cannot rule out the possibility that only a single resonance-like peak is present in the spectrum.

Searching for universality of dineutron correlation at the surface of Borromean nuclei

The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p, pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

Experimental Study of the $^{\textbf{38}}$S Excited Level Scheme

Information on the $^{38}$S level scheme was expanded through experimental work utilizing a fusion-evaporation reaction and in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. Prompt $γ$-ray transitions were detected by the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETINA) and recoiling $^{38}$S residues were selected by the Fragment Mass Analayzer (FMA). Tools based on machine-learning techniques were developed and deployed for the first time in order to enhance the unique selection of $^{38}$S residues and identify any associated $γ$-ray transitions. The new level information, including the extension of the even-spin yrast sequence through $J^π = 8^{(+)}$, was interpreted in terms of a basic single-particle picture as well shell-model calculations which incorporated the empirically derived FSU interaction. A comparison between the properties of the yrast states in the even-$Z$ $N=22$ isotones from $Z=14$ to $20$, and for $^{36}$Si-$^{38}$S in particular, was also presented with an emphasis on the role and influence of the neutron $1p_{3/2}$ orbital on the structure in the region.

Isoscaling in central Sn+Sn collisions at 270 MeV/u

Experimental information on fragment emissions is important in understanding the dynamics of nuclear collisions and in the development of transport model simulating heavy-ion collisions. The composition of complex fragments emitted in the heavy-ion collisions can be explained by statistical models, which assume that thermal equilibrium is achieved at collision energies below 100 MeV/u. Our new experimental data together with theoretical analyses for light particles from Sn+Sn collisions at 270 MeV/u, suggest that the hypothesis of thermal equilibrium breaks down for particles emitted with high transfer momentum. To inspect the system's properties in such limit, the scaling features of the yield ratios of particles from two systems, a neutron-rich system of ${}^{132}\mathrm{Sn}+{}^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ and a nearly symmetric system of ${}^{108}\mathrm{Sn}+{}^{112}\mathrm{Sn}$, are examined in the framework of the statistical multifragmentation model and the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model. The isoscaling from low energy particles agree with both models. However the observed breakdown of isoscaling for particles with high transverse momentum cannot be explained by the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model.

Proton and neutron exchange as a prelude to fusion at near-barrier energies

Systematic examination of fusion for $^{39,41,45,47}$K + $^{28}$Si and $^{36,44}$Ar + $^{28}$Si provides insight into the impact of neutron and proton exchange on fusion for nuclei at and near the N=20 and N=28 shells. Comparison of the reduced excitation functions reveals a marked difference between the behavior of open-shell and closed-shell systems. While coupled channels calculations provide a good description for the closed-shell nuclei they significantly under-predict the fusion cross-section for open-shell nuclei. The observed trends are examined in the context of a potential energy surface, including shell effects, and multi-nucleon exchange with consideration of Pauli-blocking.

Evidence of a near-threshold resonance in $^{11}$B relevant to the $β$-delayed proton emission of $^{11}$Be

A narrow near-threshold proton-emitting resonance (Ex = 11.4 MeV, J$^π$ = 1/2$^{+}$ and $Γ_{p}$ = 4.4 keV) was directly observed in $^{11}$B via proton resonance scattering. This resonance was previously inferred in the $β$-delayed proton emission of the neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be. The good agreement between both experimental results serves as a ground to confirm the existence of such exotic decay and the particular behavior of weakly bound nuclei coupled to the continuum. $R$-matrix analysis shows a sizable partial decay width for both, proton and $α$ emission channels.

Using spin alignment of inelastically-excited fast beams to make spin assignments: the spectroscopy of 13O as a test case

Excited states in 13O were investigated using inelastic scattering of an E/A=69.5-MeV 13O beam off of a 9Be target. The excited states were identified in the invariant-mass spectra of the decay products. Both single proton and sequential two-proton decays of the excited states were examined. For a number of the excited states, the protons were emitted with strong anisotropy where emissions transverse to the beam axis are favored. The measured proton-decay angular distributions were compared to predictions from distorted-wave born-approximation (DWBA) calculations of the spin alignment which was shown to be largely independent of the excitation mechanism. The deduced $^{13}$O level scheme is compared to ab initio no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) predictions. The lowest-energy excited states decay isotropically consistent with predictions of strong proton 1s1/2 structure. Above these states in the level scheme, we observed a number of higher-spin states not predicted within the model. Possibly these are associated with rotational bands built on deformed cluster configurations predicted by antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) calculations. The spin alignment mechanism is shown to be useful for making spin assignments and may have widespread use.

Probing the Symmetry Energy with the Spectral Pion Ratio

Many neutron star (NS) properties, such as the proton fraction within a NS, reflect the symmetry energy contributions to the Equation of State that dominate when neutron and proton densities differ strongly. To constrain these contributions at supra-saturation densities, we measure the spectra of charged pions produced by colliding rare isotope tin (Sn) beams with isotopically enriched Sn targets. Using ratios of the charged pion spectra measured at high transverse momenta, we deduce the slope of the symmetry energy to be $42 < L < 117$ MeV. This value is slightly lower but consistent with the $L$ values deduced from a recent measurement of the neutron skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb.
