Free-space graphene/silicon photodetectors operating at 2 micron

This paper presents the design, the fabrication and the characterization of Schottky graphene/silicon photodetectors, operating at both 2 micron and room temperature. The graphene/silicon junction has been carefully: characterized device shows a non ideal behaviour with the increasing temperature and the interfacial trap density has been measured as 1.1x10^14 eV^-1cm^-2. Photodetectors are characterized by an internal (external) responsivity of 10.3 mA/W (0.16 mA/W) in an excellent agreement with the theory. Our devices pave the way for developing hybrid graphene-Si free-space illuminated PDs operating at 2 micron, for free-space optical communications, optical coherence tomography and light-radars.

Crystallization Inhibitors: Explaining Experimental Data through Mathematical Models

In this paper we propose a new mathematical model describing the effect of phosphocitrate (PC) on sodium sulphate crystallization inside bricks. This model describes salt and water transport, and crystal formation in a one dimensional symmetry. This is the first study that takes into account mathematically the effects of inhibitors inside a porous stone. To this aim, we introduce two model parameters: the crystallization rate, which depends on the nucleation rate, and the specific volume of precipitated salt. These two parameters are determined by numerical calibration of our system model for both the treated and non treated case.

Observation of post-soliton expansion following laser propagation through an underdense plasma

The expansion of electromagnetic post-solitons emerging from the interaction of a 30 ps, $3\times 10^{18}$ W cm$^{-2}$ laser pulse with an underdense deuterium plasma has been observed up to 100 ps after the pulse propagation, when large numbers of post-solitons were seen to remain in the plasma. The temporal evolution of the post-solitons has been accurately characterized with a high spatial and temporal resolution. The observed expansion is compared to analytical models and three dimensional particle-in-cell results providing indication of the polarisation dependence of the post-soliton dynamics.

On the equilibria of the MAPK cascade: cooperativity, modularity and bistability

In this paper we present a discussion of a phenomenological model of the MAPK cascade which was originally proposed by Angeli et al. (PNAS 101, 1822 (2004)). The model and its solution are extended in several respects: a) an analytical solution is given for the cascade equilibria, exploiting a parameter-based symmetry of the rate equations; b) we discuss the cooperativity (Hill coefficients) of the cascade and show that a feedforward loop within the cascade increases its cooperativity. The relevance of this result for the notion of modularity is discussed; c) the feedback model for cascade bistability by Angeli et al. is reconsidered. We argue that care must be taken in modeling the interactions and a biologically realistic phenomenological model cannot be too reductionist. The inclusion of a time-dependent degradation rate is needed to account for a switching of the cascade.

Raman spectroscopy of a single ion coupled to a high-finesse cavity

We describe an ion-based cavity-QED system in which the internal dynamics of an atom is coupled to the modes of an optical cavity by vacuum-stimulated Raman transitions. We observe Raman spectra for different excitation polarizations and find quantitative agreement with theoretical simulations. Residual motion of the ion introduces motional sidebands in the Raman spectrum and leads to ion delocalization. The system offers prospects for cavity-assisted resolved-sideband ground-state cooling and coherent manipulation of ions and photons.

New experimental and theoretical approach to the 3d D-level lifetimes of 40Ca+

We report measurements of the lifetimes of the 3d $^2$D$_{5/2}$ and 3d $^2$D$_{3/2}$ metastable states of a single laser-cooled $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion in a linear Paul trap. We introduce a new measurement technique based on high-efficiency quantum state detection after coherent excitation to the D$_{5/2}$ state or incoherent shelving in the D$_{3/2}$ state, and subsequent free, unperturbed spontaneous decay. The result for the natural lifetime of the D$_{5/2}$ state of 1168(9) ms agrees excellently with the most precise published value. The lifetime of the D$_{3/2}$ state is measured with a single ion for the first time and yields 1176(11) ms which improves the statistical uncertainty of previous results by a factor of four. We compare these experimental lifetimes to high-precision ab initio all order calculations and find a very good agreement. These calculations represent an excellent test of high-precision atomic theory and will serve as a benchmark for the study of parity nonconservation in Ba$^+$ which has similar atomic structure.
