Extreme value methods for estimating rare events in Utopia

To capture the extremal behaviour of complex environmental phenomena in practice, flexi\-ble techniques for modelling tail behaviour are required. In this paper, we introduce a variety of such methods, which were used by the Lancopula Utopiversity team to tackle the EVA (2023) Conference Data Challenge. This data challenge was split into four challenges, labelled C1-C4. Challenges C1 and C2 comprise univariate problems, where the goal is to estimate extreme quantiles for a non-stationary time series exhibiting several complex features. For these, we propose a flexible modelling technique, based on generalised additive models, with diagnostics indicating generally good performance for the observed data. Challenges C3 and C4 concern multivariate problems where the focus is on estimating joint extremal probabilities. For challenge C3, we propose an extension of available models in the multivariate literature and use this framework to estimate extreme probabilities in the presence of non-stationary dependence. Finally, for challenge C4, which concerns a 50 dimensional random vector, we employ a clustering technique to achieve dimension reduction and use a conditional modelling approach to estimate extremal probabilities across independent groups of variables.

Laser Driven Nuclear physics at ELINP

High power lasers have proven being capable to produce high energy gamma rays, charged particles and neutrons to induce all kinds of nuclear reactions. At ELI, the studies with high power lasers will enter for the first time into new domains of power and intensities.

$B$-flavor tagging at Belle II

We report on new flavor tagging algorithms developed to determine the quark-flavor content of bottom ($B$) mesons at Belle II. The algorithms provide essential inputs for measurements of quark-flavor mixing and charge-parity violation. We validate and evaluate the performance of the algorithms using hadronic $B$ decays with flavor-specific final states reconstructed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$, collected at the $\Upsilon$(4$S$) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We measure the total effective tagging efficiency to be $\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(30.0 \pm 1.2(\text{stat}) \pm 0.4(\text{syst})\big)\%$ for a category-based algorithm and $\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(28.8 \pm 1.2(\text{stat}) \pm 0.4(\text{syst})\big)\%$ for a deep-learning-based algorithm.

BSM Benchmarks for Effective Field Theories in Higgs and Electroweak Physics

Effective Field Theories (EFTs) capture effects from heavy dynamics at low energy and represent an essential ingredient in the context of Standard Model (SM) precision tests. This document gathers a number of relevant scenarios for heavy physics beyond the SM and presents explicit expressions for the Wilson coefficients in their low-energy EFT. It includes i) weakly coupled scenarios in which one or a few particles of different spins and quantum numbers interact linearly with the SM and generate EFT effects at tree-level, ii) scenarios where heavy particles interact quadratically whereupon the resulting EFT arises only at loop-level and iii) strongly coupled scenarios where the size of Wilson coefficients is controlled by symmetry arguments. This review aims at motivating experimental EFT studies in which only a subset of all possible EFT interactions is used, as well as facilitating the theoretical interpretation of EFT fits.
