First data and preliminary experimental results from a new Doppler Backscattering system on the MAST-U spherical tokamak

A new Doppler backscattering (DBS) system, consisting of Q-band and V-band, has been installed and achieved its first data on the MAST-U spherical tokamak. The Q-band and V-band have separate microwave source systems, but share the same optical front-end components. The Q-band and V-band sources simultaneously generate eight (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48 GHz) and seven (52.5, 55, 57.5, 60, 62.5, 65 and 67.5 GHz) fixed frequency probe beams, respectively. These frequencies provide a large range of radial positions from the low-field-side edge plasma to the core, and possibly to the high-field-side edge, depending on the plasma conditions. The quasi-optical system consists of a remotely-tunable polarizer, a focusing lens and a remotely-steerable mirror. By steering the mirror, the system provides remote control of the probed density fluctuation wavenumber, and allow the launch angle to match the magnetic field. The range of accessible turbulence wavenumbers (k_\theta) is reasonably large with normalized wavenumber k_\theta\rho_s ranging from <0.5 to 9. The first data acquired by this DBS system is validated by comparing with the data from the other DBS system on MAST-U (introduced in Ref. [21]). An example of measuring the velocity profile spanning from the edge to the center in a high-density plasma is presented, indicating the robust capabilities of the integrated Q-band and V-band DBS systems.

Global Alfven Eigenmodes in the H-1 heliac

Recent upgrades in H-1 power supplies have enabled the operation of the H-1 experiment at higher heating powers than previously attainable. A heating power scan in mixed hydrogen/helium plasmas reveals a change in mode activity with increasing heating power. At low power (<50 kW) modes with beta-induced Alfven eigenmode (BAE) frequency scaling are observed. At higher power modes consistent with an analysis of nonconventional Global Alfven Eigenmodes (GAEs) are observed, the subject of this work. We have computed the mode continuum, and identified GAE structures using the ideal MHD solver CKA and the gyrokinetic code EUTERPE. An analytic model for ICRH-heated minority ions is used to estimate the fast ion temperature from the hydrogen species. Linear growth rate scans using a local flux surface stability calculation, LGRO, are performed. These studies demonstrate growth from circulating particles whose speed is significantly less than the Alfven speed, and are resonant with the mode through harmonics of the Fourier decomposition of the strongly-shaped heliac magnetic field. They reveal drive is possible with a small, hot energetic tail of the hydrogen species. Local linear growth rate scans are also complemented with global calculations from CKA and EUTERPE. These qualitatively confirm the findings from the LGRO study, and show that the inclusion of finite Larmor radius effects can reduce the growth rate by a factor of three, but do not affect marginal stability. Finally, a study of damping of the global mode with the thermal plasma is conducted, computing continuum, and the damping arising from parallel electric fields. We find that continuum damping is of order 0.1% for the configuration studied. The inclusion of resistivity lifts the damping to 19%. Such large damping is consistent with experimental observations that in absence of drive the mode decays rapidly (~0.1 ms).

Electron and ion heating characteristics during magnetic reconnection in MAST

Local electron and ion heating characteristics during merging reconnection startup on the MAST spherical tokamak have been revealed for the first time using a 130 channel YAG-TS system and a new 32 chord ion Doppler tomography diagnostic. 2D local profile measurement of $T_e$, $n_e$ and $T_i$ detect highly localized electron heating at the X point and bulk ion heating downstream. For the push merging experiment under high guide field condition, thick layer of closed flux surface formed by reconnected field sustains the heating profile for more than electron and ion energy relaxation time $\tau^E_{ei}\sim4-10$ms, both heating profiles finally form triple peak structure at the X point and downstream. Toroidal guide field mostly contributes the formation of peaked electron heating profile at the X point. The localized heating increases with higher guide field, while bulk downstream ion heating is unaffected by the change in the guide field under MAST conditions ($B_t>3B_{rec}$).

Lattice QCD Study of $B$-meson Decay Constants from ETMC

We discuss a lattice QCD computation of the $B$-meson decay constants by the ETM collaboration where suitable ratios allow to reach the bottom quark sector by combining simulations around the charm-quark mass with an exactly known static limit. The different steps involved in this ratio method are discussed together with an account of the assessment of various systematic effects. A comparison of results from simulations with two and four flavour dynamical quarks is presented.

B-physics computations from Nf=2 tmQCD

We present an accurate lattice QCD computation of the b-quark mass, the B and Bs decay constants, the B-mixing bag-parameters for the full four-fermion operator basis, as well as estimates for \xi and f_{Bq}\sqrt{B_q} extrapolated to the continuum limit and the physical pion mass. We have used Nf = 2 dynamical quark gauge configurations at four values of the lattice spacing generated by ETMC. Extrapolation in the heavy quark mass from the charm to the bottom quark region has been carried out using ratios of physical quantities computed at nearby quark masses, having an exactly known infinite mass limit.

B-physics from Nf=2 tmQCD: the Standard Model and beyond

We present a lattice QCD computation of the b-quark mass, the B and B_s decay constants, the B-mixing bag parameters for the full four-fermion operator basis as well as determinations for \xi and f_{Bq}\sqrt{B_i^{(q)}} extrapolated to the continuum limit and to the physical pion mass. We used N_f = 2 twisted mass Wilson fermions at four values of the lattice spacing with pion masses ranging from 280 to 500 MeV. Extrapolation in the heavy quark mass from the charm to the bottom quark region has been carried out on ratios of physical quantities computed at nearby quark masses, exploiting the fact that they have an exactly known infinite mass limit. Our results are m_b(m_b, \overline{\rm{MS}})=4.29(12) GeV, f_{Bs}=228(8) MeV, f_{B}=189(8) MeV and f_{Bs}/f_B=1.206(24). Moreover with our results for the bag-parameters we find \xi=1.225(31), B_1^{(s)}/B_1^{(d)}=1.01(2), f_{Bd}\sqrt{\hat{B}_{1}^{(d)}} = 216(10) MeV and f_{Bs}\sqrt{\hat{B}_{1}^{(s)}} = 262(10) MeV. We also computed the bag parameters for the complete basis of the four-fermion operators which are required in beyond the SM theories. By using these results for the bag parameters we are able to provide a refined Unitarity Triangle analysis in the presence of New Physics, improving the bounds coming from B_{(s)}-\bar B_{(s)} mixing.

B-physics from lattice QCD...with a twist

We present a precise lattice QCD determination of the b-quark mass, of the B and Bs decay constants and first results for the B-meson bag parameters. For our computation we employ the so-called ratio method and our results benefit from the use of improved interpolating operators for the B-mesons. QCD calculations are performed with Nf = 2 dynamical light-quarks at four values of the lattice spacing and the results are extrapolated to the continuum limit. The preliminary results are mb(mb) = 4.35(12) GeV for the MSbar b-quark mass, fBs = 234(6) MeV and fB = 197(10) MeV for the B-meson decay constants, BBs(mb) = 0.90(5) and BB(mb) = 0.87(5) for the B-meson bag parameters.

Local dependence of ion temperature gradient on magnetic configuration, rotational shear and turbulent heat flux in MAST

Experimental data from the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is used to show that the inverse gradient scale length of the ion temperature R/LTi (normalized to the major radius R) has its strongest local correlation with the rotational shear and the pitch angle of the magnetic field (or, equivalently, an inverse correlation with q/ε, the safety factor/the inverse aspect ratio). Furthermore, R/LTi is found to be inversely correlated with the gyro-Bohm-normalized local turbulent heat flux estimated from the density fluctuation level measured using a 2D Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic. These results can be explained in terms of the conjecture that the turbulent system adjusts to keep R/LTi close to a certain critical value (marginal for the excitation of turbulence) determined by local equilibrium parameters (although not necessarily by linear stability).

B-physics from the ratio method with Wilson twisted mass fermions

We present a precise lattice QCD determination of the b-quark mass, of the B and Bs decay constants and first preliminary results for the B-mesons bag parameter. Simulations are performed with Nf = 2 Wilson twisted mass fermions at four values of the lattice spacing and the results are extrapolated to the continuum limit. Our calculation benefits from the use of improved interpolating operators for the B-mesons and employs the so-called ratio method. The latter allows a controlled interpolation at the b-quark mass between the relativistic data around and above the charm quark mass and the exactly known static limit.

{\eta} and {\eta}' mesons from Nf=2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We determine mass and mixing angles of eta and eta' states using Nf=2+1+1 Wilson twisted mass lattice QCD. We describe how those flavour singlet states need to be treated in this lattice formulation. Results are presented for three values of the lattice spacing, a=0.061 fm, a=0.078 fm and a=0.086 fm, with light quark masses corresponding to values of the charged pion mass in a range of 230 to 500 MeV and fixed bare strange and charm quark mass values. We obtain 557(15)(45) MeV for the eta mass (first error statistical, second systematic) and 44(5) degrees for the mixing angle in the quark flavour basis, corresponding to -10(5) degrees in the octet-singlet basis.

Lattice QCD determination of m_b, f_B and f_Bs with twisted mass Wilson fermions

We present a lattice QCD determination of the b quark mass and of the B and B_s decay constants, performed with N_f=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions, by simulating at four values of the lattice spacing. In order to study the b quark on the lattice, two methods are adopted in the present work, respectively based on suitable ratios with exactly known static limit and on the interpolation between relativistic data, evaluated in the charm mass region, and the static point, obtained by simulating the HQET on the lattice. The two methods provide results in good agreement. For the b quark mass in the MSbar scheme and for the decay constants we obtain m_b(m_b)=4.29(14) GeV, f_B=195(12) MeV, f_Bs=232(10) MeV and f_Bs/f_B=1.19(5). As a byproduct of the analysis we also obtain the results for the f_D and f_Ds decay constants: f_D=212(8) MeV, f_Ds=248(6) MeV and f_Ds/f_D=1.17(5).

Magnetic imaging of shipwrecks

The ferromagnetic material in a shipwreck on the seabed causes a modification to the earth's magnetic field which can be measured at the surface. Proton magnetometer measurements at the surface are used to locate wrecks. Here I discuss how to interpret such data to explore the shape and orientation of the shipwreck on the seabed. I give details of how to model shipwrecks and deduce the magnetic signal that results. I also discuss how to analyse data in a more general way. As examples, I present and analyse data on the shipwrecks of YSTROOM and BOUBOULINA (ex COLONEL LAMB).

Light hadrons from Nf=2+1+1 dynamical twisted mass fermions

We present results of lattice QCD simulations with mass-degenerate up and down and mass-split strange and charm (Nf=2+1+1) dynamical quarks using Wilson twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. The tuning of the strange and charm quark masses is performed at three values of the lattice spacing a~0.06 fm, a~0.08 fm and a~0.09 fm with lattice sizes ranging from L~1.9 fm to L~3.9 fm. We perform a preliminary study of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory by combining our lattice data from these three values of the lattice spacing.

ChPT description of the pion mass and decay constant from N_f=2 twisted mass QCD

We study lattice QCD determinations of the pion mass and decay constant by means of chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). The lattice data are obtained from large scale simulations with N_f=2 flavours of twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. We perform a scaling test to the continuum limit of these data and use ChPT to perform both the chiral and the infinite volume extrapolations.

Scaling and ChPT Description of Pions from N_f=2 twisted mass QCD

We study light-quark observables by means of dynamical lattice QCD simulations using two flavours of twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. We employ chiral perturbation theory to describe our data for the pion mass and decay constant. In this way, we extract precise determinations for the low-energy constants of the effective theory as well as for the light-quark mass and the chiral condensate.

First results of ETMC simulations with Nf=2+1+1 maximally twisted mass fermions

We present first results from runs performed with Nf=2+1+1 flavours of dynamical twisted mass fermions at maximal twist: a degenerate light doublet and a mass split heavy doublet. An overview of the input parameters and tuning status of our ensembles is given, together with a comparison with results obtained with Nf=2 flavours. The problem of extracting the mass of the K- and D-mesons is discussed, and the tuning of the strange and charm quark masses examined. Finally we compare two methods of extracting the lattice spacings to check the consistency of our data and we present some first results of ChiPT fits in the light meson sector.

Light Meson Physics from Maximally Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

We present a comprehensive investigation of light meson physics using maximally twisted mass fermions for two mass-degenerate quark flavours. By employing four values of the lattice spacing, spatial lattice extents ranging from 2.0 fm to 2.5 fm and pseudo scalar masses in the range 280 MeV to 650 MeV we control the major systematic effects of our calculation. This enables us to confront our data with chiral perturbation theory and extract low energy constants of the effective chiral Lagrangian and derived quantities, such as the light quark mass, with high precision.

f_B and f_Bs with maximally twisted Wilson fermions

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the heavy-light decay constants f_B and f_Bs performed with Nf=2 maximally twisted Wilson fermions, at four values of the lattice spacing. The decay constants have been also computed in the static limit and the results are used to interpolate the observables between the charm and the infinite-mass sectors, thus obtaining the value of the decay constants at the physical b quark mass. Our preliminary results are f_B=191(14) MeV, f_Bs=243(14) MeV, f_Bs/f_B=1.27(5). They are in good agreement with those obtained with a novel approach, recently proposed by our Collaboration (ETMC), based on the use of suitable ratios having an exactly known static limit.
