Metastability from the large deviations point of view: A $\Gamma$-expansion of the level two large deviations rate functional of non-reversible finite-state Markov chains

Consider a sequence of continuous-time Markov chains $(X^{(n)}_t:t\ge 0)$ evolving on a fixed finite state space $V$. Let $I_n$ be the level two large deviations rate functional for $X^{(n)}_t$, as $t\to\infty$. Under a hypothesis on the jump rates, we prove that $I_n$ can be written as $I_n = I^{(0)} \,+\, \sum_{1\le p\le q} (1/\theta^{(p)}_n) \, I^{(p)}$ for some rate functionals $I^{(p)}$. The weights $\theta^{(p)}_n$ correspond to the time-scales at which the sequence of Markov chains $X^{(n)}_t$ exhibit a metastable behavior, and the zero level sets of the rate functionals $I^{(p)}$ identify the metastable states.

Metastable $\Gamma$-expansion of finite state Markov chains level two large deviations rate functions

We examine two analytical characterisation of the metastable behavior of a Markov chain. The first one expressed in terms of its transition probabilities, and the second one in terms of its large deviations rate functional. Consider a sequence of continuous-time Markov chains $(X^{(n)}_t:t\ge 0)$ evolving on a fixed finite state space $V$. Under a hypothesis on the jump rates, we prove the existence of times-scales $\theta^{(p)}_n$ and probability measures with disjoint supports $\pi^{(p)}_j$, $j\in S_p$, $1\le p \le q$, such that (a) $\theta^{(1)}_n \to \infty$, $\theta^{(k+1)}_n/\theta^{(k)}_n \to \infty$, (b) for all $p$, $x\in V$, $t>0$, starting from $x$, the distribution of $X^{(n)}_{t \theta^{(p)}_n}$ converges, as $n\to\infty$, to a convex combination of the probability measures $\pi^{(p)}_j$. The weights of the convex combination naturally depend on $x$ and $t$. Let $I_n$ be the level two large deviations rate functional for $X^{(n)}_t$, as $t\to\infty$. Under the same hypothesis on the jump rates and assuming, furthermore, that the process is reversible, we prove that $I_n$ can be written as $I_n = I^{(0)} \,+\, \sum_{1\le p\le q} (1/\theta^{(p)}_n) \, I^{(p)}$ for some rate functionals $I^{(p)}$ which take finite values only at convex combinations of the measures $\pi^{(p)}_j$: $I^{(p)}(\mu) < \infty$ if, and only if, $\mu = \sum_{j\in S_p} \omega_j\, \pi^{(p)}_j$ for some probability measure $\omega$ in $S_p$.

Steady state large deviations for one-dimensional, symmetric exclusion processes in weak contact with reservoirs

Consider the symmetric exclusion process evolving on an interval and weakly interacting at the end-points with reservoirs. Denote by $I_{[0,T]} (\cdot)$ its dynamical large deviations functional and by $V(\cdot)$ the associated quasi-potential, defined as $V(\gamma) = \inf_{T>0} \inf_u I_{[0,T]} (u)$, where the infimum is carried over all trajectories $u$ such that $u(0) = \bar\rho$, $u(T) = \gamma$, and $\bar\rho$ is the stationary density profile. We derive the partial differential equation which describes the evolution of the optimal trajectory, and deduce from this result the formula obtained by Derrida, Hirschberg and Sadhu \cite{DHS2021} for the quasi-potential through the representation of the steady state as a product of matrices.

A Resolvent Approach to Metastability

We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the metastability of a Markov chain, expressed in terms of a property of the solutions of the resolvent equation. As an application of this result, we prove the metastability of reversible, critical zero-range processes starting from a configuration.

A one-dimensional non-local singular SPDE

We examine in this article the one-dimensional, non-local, singular SPDE \begin{equation*} \partial_t u \;=\; -\, (-Δ)^{1/2} u \,-\, \sinh(γu) \,+\, ξ\;, \end{equation*} where $γ\in \mathbb{R}$, $(-Δ)^{1/2}$ is the fractional Laplacian of order $1/2$, $ξ$ the space-time white noise in $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}$, and $\mathbb{T}$ the one-dimensional torus. We show that for $0<γ^2<π/7$ the Da Prato--Debussche method applies. One of the main difficulties lies in the derivation of a Schauder estimate for the semi-group associated to the fractional Laplacian due to the lack of smoothness resulting from the long range interaction.

Metastable Markov chains

We review recent results on the metastable behavior of continuous-time Markov chains derived through the characterization of Markov chains as unique solutions of martingale problems.

Dirichlet's and Thomson's principles for non-selfadjoint elliptic operators with application to non-reversible metastable diffusion processes

We present two variational formulae for the capacity in the context of non-selfadjoint elliptic operators. The minimizers of these variational problems are expressed as solutions of boundary-value elliptic equations. We use these principles to provide a sharp estimate for the transition times between two different wells for non-reversible diffusion processes. This estimate permits to describe the metastable behavior of the system.

From coalescing random walks on a torus to Kingman's coalescent

Let $\mathbb{T}^d_N$, $d\ge 2$, be the discrete $d$-dimensional torus with $N^d$ points. Place a particle at each site of $\mathbb{T}^d_N$ and let them evolve as independent, nearest-neighbor, symmetric, continuous-time random walks. Each time two particles meet, they coalesce into one. Denote by $C_N$ the first time the set of particles is reduced to a singleton. Cox [6] proved the existence of a time-scale $θ_N$ for which $C_N/θ_N$ converges to the sum of independent exponential random variables. Denote by $Z^N_t$ the total number of particles at time $t$. We prove that the sequence of Markov chains $(Z^N_{tθ_N})_{t\ge 0}$ converges to the total number of partitions in Kingman's coalescent.

Metastability of one-dimensional, non-reversible diffusions with periodic boundary conditions

We consider small perturbations of a dynamical system on the one-dimensional torus. We derive sharp estimates for the pre-factor of the stationary state, we examine the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the pre-factor, we compute the capacities between disjoint sets, and we prove the metastable behavior of the process among the deepest wells following the martingale approach. We also present a bound for the probability that a Markov process hits a set before some fixed time in terms of the capacity of an enlarged process.

Metastability of finite state Markov chains: a recursive procedure to identify slow variables for model reduction

Consider a sequence $(η^N(t) :t\ge 0)$ of continuous-time, irreducible Markov chains evolving on a fixed finite set $E$, indexed by a parameter $N$. Denote by $R_N(η,ξ)$ the jump rates of the Markov chain $η^N_t$, and assume that for any pair of bonds $(η,ξ)$, $(η',ξ')$ $\arctan \{R_N(η,ξ)/R_N(η',ξ')\}$ converges as $N\uparrow\infty$. Under a hypothesis slightly more restrictive (cf. \eqref{mhyp} below), we present a recursive procedure which provides a sequence of increasing time-scales $θ^1_N, \dots, θ^{\mf p}_N$, $θ^j_N \ll θ^{j+1}_N$, and of coarsening partitions $\{\ms E^j_1, \dots, \ms E^j_{\mf n_j}, Δ^j\}$, $1\le j\le \mf p$, of the set $E$. Let $ϕ_j: E \to \{0,1, \dots, \mf n_j\}$ be the projection defined by $ ϕ_j(η) = \sum_{x=1}^{\mf n_j} x \, \mb 1\{η\in \ms E^j_x\}$. For each $1\le j\le \mf p$, we prove that the hidden Markov chain $X^j_N(t) = ϕ_j(η^N(tθ^j_N))$ converges to a Markov chain on $\{1, \dots, \mf n_j\}$.

Quantitative analysis of Clausius inequality

In the context of driven diffusive systems, for thermodynamic transformations over a large but finite time window, we derive an expansion of the energy balance. In particular, we characterize the transformations which minimize the energy dissipation and describe the optimal correction to the quasi-static limit. Surprisingly, in the case of transformations between homogeneous equilibrium states of an ideal gas, the optimal transformation is a sequence of inhomogeneous equilibrium states.

A correction to the hydrodynamic limit of boundary driven exclusion processes in a super-diffusive time scale

We consider a one-dimensional, weakly asymmetric, boundary driven exclusion process on the interval $[0,N]\cap Z$ in the super-diffusive time scale $N^2 ε^{-1}_N$, where $1\ll ε^{-1}_N \ll N^{1/4}$. We assume that the external field and the chemical potentials, which fix the density at the boundaries, evolve smoothly in the macroscopic time scale. We derive an equation which describes the evolution of the density up to the order $ε_N$.
