Are Giant Planets Forming Around HR 4796A?

We have obtained FUSE and HST STIS spectra of HR 4796A, a nearby 8 Myr old main sequence star that possesses a dusty circumstellar disk whose inclination has been constrained from high resolution near-infrared observations to be ~17 deg from edge-on. We searched for circumstellar absorption in the ground states of C II at 1036.3 A, O I at 1039.2 A, Zn II at 2026.1 A, Lyman series H2, and CO (A-X) and failed to detect any of these species. We place upper limits on the column densities and infer upper limits on the gas masses assuming that the gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium, is well-mixed, and has a temperature, Tgas ~ 65 K. Our measurements suggest that this system possesses very little molecular gas. Therefore, we infer an upper limit for the gas:dust ratio (<4.0) assuming that the gas is atomic. We measure less gas in this system than is required to form the envelope of Jupiter.

The Low Velocity Wind from the Circumstellar Matter Around the B9V Star sigma Herculis

We have obtained FUSE spectra of sigma Her, a nearby binary system, with a main sequence primary, that has a Vega-like infrared excess. We observe absorption in the excited fine structure lines C II* at 1037 A, N II* at 1085 A, and N II** at 1086 A that are blueshifted by as much as ~30 km/sec with respect to the star. Since these features are considerably narrower than the stellar lines and broader than interstellar features, the C II and N II are circumstellar. We suggest that there is a radiatively driven wind, arising from the circumstellar matter, rather than accretion as occurs around beta Pic, because of sigma Her's high luminosity. Assuming that the gas is liberated by collisions between parent bodies at 20 AU, the approximate distance at which blackbody grains are in radiative equilibrium with the star and at which 3-body orbits become unstable, we infer dM/dt ~ 6 * 10^-12 M_{sun}/yr. This wind depletes the minimum mass of parent bodies in less than the estimated age of the system.

A Possible Massive Asteroid Belt Around zeta Lep

We have used the Keck I telescope to image at 11.7 microns and 17.9 microns the dust emission around zeta Lep, a main sequence A-type star at 21.5 pc from the Sun with an infrared excess. The excess is at most marginally resolved at 17.9 microns. The dust distance from the star is probably less than or equal to 6 AU, although some dust may extend to 9 AU. The mass of observed dust is \~10^22 g. Since the lifetime of dust particles is about 10,000 years because of the Poytning-Robertson effect, we robustly estimate at least 4 10^26 g must reside in parent bodies which may be asteroids if the system is in a steady state and has an age of ~300 Myr. This mass is approximately 200 times that contained within the main asteroid belt in our solar system.

Mesoscopic, Non-equilibrium Fluctuations of Inhomogeneous Electronic States in Manganites

By using the dark-field real-space imaging technique of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we have observed slow 200 A-scale fluctuations of charge-ordered (CO) phase in mixed-valent manganites under a strong electron beam irradiation. In addition to these unusual fluctuations of the CO phase, we observed the switching-type fluctuations of electrical resistivity in the same sample, which were found to be as large as several percents. Systematic analysis indicates that these two different types of fluctuations with a similar time scale of the order of seconds are interconnected through a meta-stable insulating charge-disordered state. Current dependence of the fluctuations suggests a non-equilibrium nature of this slow dynamics.

Symmetric Versus Nonsymmetric Structure of the Phosphorus Vacancy on InP(110)

The atomic and electronic structure of positively charged P vacancies on InP(110) surfaces is determined by combining scanning tunneling microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, and density-functional theory calculations. The vacancy exhibits a nonsymmetric rebonded atomic configuration with a charge transfer level 0.75+-0.1 eV above the valence band maximum. The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images show only a time average of two degenerate geometries, due to a thermal flip motion between the mirror configurations. This leads to an apparently symmetric STM image, although the ground state atomic structure is nonsymmetric.

T Violating Muon Polarization in $K^+\to μ^+νγ$

We study the T violating transverse muon polarization in the decay of $K^+\to μ^+νγ$ due to CP violation in theories beyond the standard model. We find that the polarization asymmetry could be large in some CP violation models and it may be detectable at the ongoing KEK experiment of E246 as well as the proposed BNL experiment.

Report of the Supersymmetry Theory Working Group

We provide a mini-guide to some of the possible manifestations of weak scale supersymmetry. For each of six scenarios we provide a brief description of the theoretical underpinnings, the adjustable parameters, a qualitative description of the associated phenomenology at future colliders, comments on how to simulate each scenario with existing event generators.

Impact of Charge Ordering on Magnetic Correlations in Perovskite (Bi,Ca)MnO_3

Single crystalline (Bi,Ca)MnO3 (74< %Ca <82) were studied with neutron scattering, electron diffraction and bulk magnetic measurement. We discovered dynamic ferromagnetic spin correlations at high temperatures, which are replaced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at a concomitant charge ordering and structural transition. Our results indicate that thermal-activated hopping of the Jahn-Teller active e_g electrons in these insulating materials, nevertheless, induce ferromagnetic interaction through double-exchange mechanism. It is the ordering of these charges competing with the double-exchange ferromagnetic metallic state.

LOW ENERGY SUPERSYMMETRY PHENOMENOLOGY

We summarize the current status and future prospects for low energy (weak scale) supersymmetry. In particular, we evaluate the capabilities of various $e^+e^-$, $p\bar p$ and $pp$ colliders to discover evidence for supersymmetric particles. Furthermore, assuming supersymmetry is discovered, we discuss capabilities of future facilities to dis-entangle the anticipated spectrum of super-particles, and, via precision measurements, to test mass and coupling parameters for comparison with various theoretical expectations. We comment upon the complementarity of proposed hadron and $e^+e^-$ machines for a comprehensive study of low energy supersymmetry.

SIGNALS FOR MINIMAL SUPERGRAVITY AT THE CERN LARGE HADRON COLLIDER: MULTI-JET PLUS MISSING ENERGY CHANNEL,

We use ISAJET to perform a detailed study of the missing transverse energy $\eslt$ plus multi-jet signal expected from superparticle production at the CERN LHC. Our analysis is performed within the framework of the minimal supergravity model with gauge coupling unification and radiative electroweak symmetry breaking. We delineate the region of parameter space where the $\eslt$ supersymmetry signal should be observable at the LHC and compare it to the regions explorable via searches for sleptons and for chargino/neutralino production. We confirm that, given a data sample of 10~$\fb^{-1}$, $m_{\tg}\sim 1300$ GeV can be explored if $m_{\tq}\gg m_{\tg}$, while $m_{\tg}\sim 2000$ GeV can be probed if $m_{\tq}\simeq m_{\tg}$. We further examine what information can be gleaned from scrutinizing this event sample. For instance, the multi-jet multiplicity yields information on whether squark production makes a significant contribution to the observed $\eslt$ sample. Furthermore, reconstructing hemispheric masses may yield a measure of $m_{\tg}$ to $\sim 15-25\%$. Finally, for favourable ranges of parameters, by reconstructing masses of tagged $b\bar{b}$ jet pairs, it may be possible to detect Higgs bosons produced via sparticle cascade decay chains.

Inverted Pairing and Excitation Induced by Quadrupole-Quadrupole Interaction

In this paper, eit is shown for a single-$j$ shell that the intrinsic excitations induced by the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction can be viewed as that due to the inverted surface-delta interaction whose multipole-pairing component with the largest spin is the dominant term and is attractive. This allow us to trace the origin of the recently introduced optimum pair description of rotation and leads naturally to analytical expressions for the rotational energies for the various bands in a single $j$-shell with the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction.

Multi-Channel Search for Minimal Supergravity at $p\bar p$ and $e^+e^-$ Colliders

We examine the phenomenology of minimal supergravity models, assuming only that the low energy theory has the minimal particle content, that electroweak symmetry is radiatively broken, and that R-parity is essentially conserved. After delineating regions of supergravity parameter space currently excluded by direct particle searches at LEP and the Tevatron, we quantify how this search region will be expanded when LEP~II and the Tevatron Main Injector upgrades become operational. We describe how various experimental analyses can be consistently combined within a single framework, resulting in a multi-channel search for supersymmetry, but note that this analysis is sensitive to specific assumptions about physics at the unification scale.

Trileptons from Chargino-Neutralino Production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We study direct production of charginos and neutralinos at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We simulate all channels of chargino and neutralino production using ISAJET 7.07. The best mode for observing such processes appears to be $pp\to\tw_1\tz_2\to 3\ell +\eslt$. We evaluate signal expectations and background levels, and suggest cuts to optimize the signal. The trilepton mode should be viable provided $m_{\tg}\alt 500-600$~GeV; above this mass, the decay modes $\tz_2\to\tz_1 Z$ and $\tz_2\to H_{\ell}\tz_1$ become dominant, spoiling the signal. In the first case, the leptonic branching fraction for $Z$ decay is small and additional background from $WZ$ is present, while in the second case, the trilepton signal is essentially absent. For smaller values of $m_{\tg}$, the trilepton signal should be visible above background, especially if $|μ|\simeq m_{\tg}$ and $m_{\tell}\ll m_{\tq}$, in which case the leptonic decays of $\tz_2$ are enhanced. Distributions in dilepton mass $m(\ell\bar{\ell})$ can yield direct information on neutralino masses due to the distribution cutoff at $m_{\tz_2}-m_{\tz_1}$. Other distributions that may lead to an additional constraint amongst the chargino and neutralino masses are also examined.

An Estimate of Jet Activity in $t\bar t$ Events

We present a calculation of jet activity associated with pair production of top quarks at hadron colliders and supercolliders. Our approach is based upon a merger of $2\rightarrow 3$ matrix elements with initial and final state parton showers. We tabulate expected multi-jet rates in $t\bar t$ events, and compare with ${\cal O}(α_s^3 )$ matrix element results and parton showers based upon $2\rightarrow 2$ subprocesses. The merged calculation includes the correct matrix element for the first leg of the parton shower, but also includes the effects of approximate all-orders quark and gluon emission. We also evaluate expected jet activity in top pair events at hadron supercolliders; in particular, a comparison of the jet activity in the far forward region is made. It is found that the merged calculation yields more jet activity in the forward region than pure matrix element estimates, but also more jet activity in the central region. This can be important for background calculations to $H\rightarrow WW$ and strong $WW$ scattering processes.
