Operators near completely polynomially dominated ones and similarity problems

Let T and C be two Hilbert space operators. We prove that if T is near, in a certain sense, to an operator completely polynomially dominated with a finite bound by C, then T is similar to an operator which is completely polynomially dominated by the direct sum of C and a suitable weighted unilateral shift. Among the applications, a refined Banach space version of Rota similarity theorem is given and partial answers to a problem of K. Davidson and V. Paulsen are obtained. The latter problem concerns CAR-valued Foguel-Hankel operators which are generalizations of the operator considered by G. Pisier in his example of a polynomial bounded operator not similar to a contraction.

The stability radius of linear operator pencils

Let T and S be two bounded linear operators from Banach spaces X into Y and suppose that T is Fredholm and the stability number k(T;S) is 0. Let d(T;S) be the supremum of all r > 0 such that dim N(T-λS) and codim R(T-λS) are constant for all λwith |λ| < r. It was proved in 1980 by H. Bart and D.C. Lay that d(T;S) = \lim_{n\to\infty}γ_{n}(T;S)^{1/n}, where γ_{n}(T;S) are some non-negative (extended) real numbers. For X=Y and S = I, the identity operator, we have γ_{n}(T;S) = γ(T^n), where γis the reduced minimum modulus. A different representation of the stability radius is obtained here in terms of the spectral radii of generalized inverses of T. The existence of generalized resolvents for Fredholm linear pencils is also considered.

Compressions of Resolvents and Maximal Radius of Regularity

Suppose that $λ- T$ is left-invertible in $L(H)$ for all $λ\in Ω$, where $Ω$ is an open subset of the complex plane. Then an operator-valued function $L(λ)$ is a left resolvent of $T$ in $Ω$ if and only if $T$ has an extension $\tilde{T}$, the resolvent of which is a dilation of $L(λ)$ of a particular form. Generalized resolvents exist on every open set $U$, with $\bar{U}$ included in the regular domain of $T$. This implies a formula for the maximal radius of regularity of $T$ in terms of the spectral radius of its generalized inverses. A solution to an open problem raised by J. Zemánek is obtained.

Stable Ranks, K-Groups and Witt Groups of some Banach and C-star Algebras

We show that certain dense and spectral invariant subalgebras of a $C^*$-algebra have the same bilateral Bass stable rank. This is a partial answer for (a version of) an open problem raised by R.G. Swan. Then, for certain Banach algebras, we indicate when the homotopy groups $\pi_{i}(GL_{n}(A))$ stabilize for large $n$. This is an improvement of a result due to G. Corach and A. Larotonda. Using some results due to M. Karoubi, we show the isomorphism of the Witt group of a symmetric Banach algebra with the $K_0$-group of its enveloping $C^*$-algebra. The question if this is true for all involutive Banach algebras was raised by A. Connes.

The Stable Rank of Topological Algebras and a Problem of R.G. Swan

Various notions of stable ranks are studied for topological algebras. Some partial answers to R.G. Swan's problem (Have two Banach or good Fréchet algebras as in the density theorem in K-theory the same stable rank ?) are obtained. For example, a Fréchet dense $\ast$-subalgebra $A$ of a $C^\ast$-algebra $B$, closed under $C^\infty$-functional calculus of self-adjoint elements, has the same Bass stable rank as $B$.
