Algebraic models for equivariant rational homotopy theory for discrete groups

We provide a framework which generalizes algebraic models of a homotopy theory of spaces to the genuine equivariant case for a discrete group. We explain how this applies to commutative differential graded algebra (cdga) models and complete differential graded Lie algebra models for rational spaces. We compare the cdga model to other model categories in the literature, correcting some mistakes in previous approaches. As an intermediary result, we get that the injective model structure on the category of non-negative cochain complexes with values in a Grothendieck abelian category is cofibrantly generated, and we provide explicit generating (acyclic) cofibrations.

The motive of a variety with cellular resolution of singularities

A complex variety $X$ admits a cellular resolution of singularities if there exists a resolution of singularities $\widetilde X\to X$ such that its exceptional locus as well as $\widetilde X$ and the singular locus of $X$ admit a cellular decomposition. We give a concrete description of the motive with compact support of $X$ in terms of its Borel-Moore homology, under some mild conditions. We give many examples, including rational projective curves and toric varieties of dimension two and three.

The cotangent complex and Thom spectra

The cotangent complex of a map of commutative rings is a central object in deformation theory. Since the 1990s, it has been generalized to the homotopical setting of $E_\infty$-ring spectra in various ways. In this work we first establish, in the context of $\infty$-categories and using Goodwillie's calculus of functors, that various definitions of the cotangent complex of a map of $E_\infty$-ring spectra that exist in the literature are equivalent. We then turn our attention to a specific example. Let $R$ be an $E_\infty$-ring spectrum and $\mathrm{Pic}(R)$ denote its Picard $E_\infty$-group. Let $Mf$ denote the Thom $E_\infty$-$R$-algebra of a map of $E_\infty$-groups $f:G\to \mathrm{Pic}(R)$; examples of $Mf$ are given by various flavors of cobordism spectra. We prove that the cotangent complex of $R\to Mf$ is equivalent to the smash product of $Mf$ and the connective spectrum associated to $G$.

Higher topological Hochschild homology of periodic complex K-theory

We describe the topological Hochschild homology of the periodic complex $K$-theory spectrum, $THH(KU)$, as a commutative $KU$-algebra: it is equivalent to $KU[K(\mathbb{Z},3)]$ and to $F(ΣKU_{\mathbb{Q}})$, where $F$ is the free commutative $KU$-algebra functor on a $KU$-module. Moreover, $F(ΣKU_{\mathbb{Q}})\simeq KU \vee ΣKU_{\mathbb{Q}}$, a square-zero extension. In order to prove these results, we first establish that topological Hochschild homology commutes, as an algebra, with localization at an element. Then, we prove that $THH^n(KU)$, the $n$-fold iteration of $THH(KU)$, i.e. $T^n\otimes KU$, is equivalent to $KU[G]$ where $G$ is a certain product of integral Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces, and to a free commutative $KU$-algebra on a rational $KU$-module. We prove that $S^n \otimes KU$ is equivalent to $KU[K(\mathbb{Z},n+2)]$ and to $F(Σ^n KU_{\mathbb{Q}})$. We describe the topological André-Quillen homology of $KU$.

Thom spectra, higher $THH$ and tensors in $\infty$-categories

Let $f:G\to \mathrm{Pic}(R)$ be a map of $E_\infty$-groups, where $\mathrm{Pic}(R)$ denotes the Picard space of an $E_\infty$-ring spectrum $R$. We determine the tensor $X\otimes_R Mf$ of the Thom $E_\infty$-$R$-algebra $Mf$ with a space $X$; when $X$ is the circle, the tensor with $X$ is topological Hochschild homology over $R$. We use the theory of localizations of $\infty$-categories as a technical tool: we contribute to this theory an $\infty$-categorical analogue of Day's reflection theorem about closed symmetric monoidal structures on localizations, and we prove that for a smashing localization $L$ of the $\infty$-category of presentable $\infty$-categories, the free $L$-local presentable $\infty$-category on a small simplicial set $K$ is given by presheaves on $K$ valued on the $L$-localization of the $\infty$-category of spaces. If $X$ is a pointed space, a map $g: A\to B$ of $E_\infty$-ring spectra satisfies $X$-base change if $X\otimes B$ is the pushout of $A\to X\otimes A$ along $g$. Building on a result of Mathew, we prove that if $g$ is \'etale then it satisfies $X$-base change provided $X$ is connected. We also prove that $g$ satisfies $X$-base change provided the multiplication map of $B$ is an equivalence. Finally, we prove that, under some hypotheses, the Thom isomorphism of Mahowald cannot be an instance of $S^0$-base change.

Graded multiplications on iterated bar constructions

We define a bar construction endofunctor on the category of commutative augmented monoids $A$ of a symmetric monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$ endowed with a left adjoint monoidal functor $F:s\mathbf{Set}\to \mathcal{V}$. To do this, we need to carefully examine the monoidal properties of the well-known (reduced) simplicial bar construction $B_\bullet(1,A,1)$. We define a geometric realization $|-|$ with respect to the image under $F$ of the canonical cosimplicial simplicial set. This guarantees good monoidal properties of $|-|$: it is monoidal, and given a left adjoint monoidal functor $G:\mathcal{V}\to \mathcal{W}$, there is a monoidal transformation $|G-|\Rightarrow G|-|$. We can then consider $BA=|B_\bullet A|$ and the iterations $B^nA$. We establish the existence of a graded multiplication on these objects, provided the category $\mathcal{V}$ is cartesian and $A$ is a ring object. The examples studied include simplicial sets and modules, topological spaces, chain complexes and spectra.
