A partial permutation of $[n] := \{1,\dots,n\}$ is a bijection $g: I \to J$ between two subsets $I,J \subseteq [n]$. Given a partial permutation $g$ of $[n]$, let $a_g \in \mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ be the group algebra sum of those permutations $w \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ which extend $g$. Informally, a partial permutation $g$ is obtained by forgetting some data in a genuine permutation. The forgotten symmetric functions are the least-studied of the six `standard' bases for the ring of symmetric functions. We show that forgotten symmetric functions arise naturally in class function evaluations on partial permutations.

Derangement permutation matrices and orbit harmonics

Let $\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}$ be an $n \times n$ matrix of variables and let $S = \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ be the polynomial ring over these variables where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic zero. Regard $S$ as the coordinate ring of the affine space $\mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ of $n \times n$ $\mathbb{F}$-matrices. Let $\mathfrak{D}_n \subseteq \mathbb{F}^{n \times n}$ be the locus of derangement permutation matrices. We study the orbit harmonics quotient ring ${\bf R}(\mathfrak{D}_n) = S/\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ where $\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ is the associated graded ideal of the vanishing ideal $\mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n) \subseteq S$. We give an explicit generating set of $\mathrm{gr} \, \mathbf{I}(\mathfrak{D}_n),$ relate the Hilbert series of $\mathbf{R}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$ to the Foata transformation and the longest increasing subsequence statistic on $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and give an alternating sum formula for the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-character of $\mathbf{R}(\mathfrak{D}_n)$. Our proofs make heavy use of the mapping cone construction of homological algebra.

Superspace coinvariants for wreath products

Let $\Omega$ be the superspace ring of regular differential forms on the affine space $\mathbb{C}^n$. If $G \subseteq GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ is a complex reflection group, the {\em $G$-superspace coinvariant ring} is the quotient $SR_G := \Omega_n/SI_G$ where $SI_G \subseteq \Omega$ is the ideal generated by $G$-invariants with vanishing constant term. We study this ring when $G = \mathbb{Z}_r \wr \mathfrak{S}_n$ is the group of $r$-colored permutation matrices. We prove a conjecture of Sagan and Swanson on a monomial basis for $SR_G$ and give an Operator Theorem description of its inverse system. We also give a combinatorial model for the ungraded and exterior-graded structure of $SR_G$ as a $G$-module.

Superspace coinvariants and inverse systems for $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$

Let $q$ be a prime power and write $\Omega$ for the bigraded algebra of regular differential forms over $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. The general linear group $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ acts on $\Omega$; write $SI \subseteq \Omega$ for the ideal generated by $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$-invariants with vanishing constant term. The {\em $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$-superspace coinvariant ring} is the quotient $SR := \Omega/SI$. We calculate the bigraded Hilbert series of $SR$ and give an operator-theoretic characterization of the inverse system $SI^\perp$. Our results extend to subgroups $G$ of $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ which contain $SL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$.

Big Varchenko-Gelfand rings and orbit harmonics

Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a conditional oriented matroid. We define a graded algebra $\widehat{\mathscr{VG}}_\mathscr{M}$ with vector space dimension given by the number of covectors in $\mathscr{M}$ which admits a distinguished filtration indexed by the poset $\mathscr{L}(\mathscr{M})$ of flats of $\mathscr{M}$. The subquotients of this filtration are isomorphic to graded Varchenko-Gelfand rings of contractions of $\mathscr{M}$, so we call $\widehat{\mathscr{VG}}_\mathscr{M}$ the {\em graded big Varchenko-Gelfand ring of $\mathscr{M}$.} We describe a no broken circuit type basis of $\widehat{\mathscr{VG}}_\mathscr{M}$ and study its equivariant structure under the action of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathscr{M})$. Our key technique is the orbit harmonics deformation which encodes $\widehat{\mathscr{VG}}_\mathscr{M}$ (as well as the classical Varchenko-Gelfand ring) in terms of a locus of points.

A proof of the Fields Conjectures

The {\em superspace ring} of rank $n$ is the algebra $\Omega_n$ of differential forms on affine $n$-space. The algebra $\Omega_n$ is bigraded with respect to polynomial and exterior degree and carries a natural action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Modding out by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term yields the {\em superspace coinvariant ring} $SR_n$. We prove that, as an ungraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module, the space $SR_n$ is isomorphic to the sign-twisted permutation action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on ordered set partitions of $\{1,\dots,n\}$. We refine this result by calculating the bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-isomorphism type of $SR_n$. This proves the Fields Conjectures of N. Bergeron, L. Colmenarejo, S.-X. Li, J. Machacek, R. Sulzgruber, and M. Zabrocki as well as a related conjecture of V. Reiner.

Zigzags, contingency tables, and quotient rings

Let $\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}$ be a $k \times p$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables. Given two weak compositions $\alpha,\beta \models_0 n$ of lengths $\ell(\alpha) = k$ and $\ell(\beta) = p$, we study the ideal $I_{\alpha,\beta} \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]$ generated by row sums, column sums, monomials in row $i$ of degree $> \alpha_i$, and monomials in column $j$ of degree $> \beta_j$. We prove results connecting algebraic properties of the quotient ring $R_{\alpha,\beta} := \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]/I_{\alpha,\beta}$ with the set $C_{\alpha,\beta}$ of $\alpha,\beta$-contingency tables. The standard monomial basis of $R_{\alpha,\beta}$ with respect to a diagonal term order is encoded by the matrix-ball avatar of the RSK correspondence. We describe the Hilbert series of $R_{\alpha,\beta}$ in terms of a zigzag statistic on contingency tables. The ring $R_{\alpha,\beta}$ carries a graded action of the product $\mathrm{Stab}(\alpha) \times \mathrm{Stab}(\beta)$ of symmetry groups of the sequences $\alpha = (\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_k)$ and $\beta = (\beta_1,\dots,\beta_p)$; we describe how to calculate the isomorphism type of this graded action. Our analysis regards the set $C_{\alpha,\beta}$ as a locus in the affine space $\mathrm{Mat}_{k \times p}(\mathbb{F})$ and applies orbit harmonics to this locus.

Partial permutations and character evaluations

Let $I = (i_1, \dots, i_k)$ and $J = (j_1, \dots, j_k)$ be two length $k$ sequences drawn from $\{1, \dots, n \}$. We have the group algebra element $[I,J] := \sum_{w(I) = J} w \in \mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ where the sum is over permutations $w \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ which satisfy $w(i_p) = j_p$ for $p = 1, \dots, k$. We give an algorithm for evaluating irreducible characters $\chi^\lambda: \mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n] \to \mathbb{C}$ of the symmetric group on the elements $[I,J]$. This algorithm is a hybrid of the classical Murnaghan--Nakayama rule and a new path Murnaghan--Nakayama rule which reflects the decomposition of a partial permutation into paths and cycles. These results first appeared in arXiv:2206.06567, which is no longer intended for publication. We originally used the character theoretic results in this paper to prove asymptotic results on moments of certain permutation statistics restricted to conjugacy classes. A referee generously shared a combinatorial argument which is strong enough to prove these results without recourse to character theory. These results now appear in our companion paper~\cite{HRMoment}. However, the approach in this paper is more explicit, as we demonstrate with several examples.

Moments of permutation statistics by cycle type

Beginning with work of Zeilberger on classical pattern counts, there are a variety of structural results for moments of permutation statistics applied to random permutations. Using tools from representation theory, Gaetz and Ryba generalized Zeilberger's results to uniformly random permutations of a given cycle type. We introduce regular statistics and characterize their moments for all cycle types, generalizing all results in this literature that we are aware of. Our approach splits into two steps: first characterize such statistics as linear combinations of indicator functions for partial permutations, then identifying the moments of such indicators. As an application, we show that many regular statistics exhibit a law of large numbers depending only on fixed point counts and a similar variance property that depends also on two--cycle counts. These results first appeared in arXiv:2206.06567, which is no longer intended for publication. Our original proof of the moment result for indicators of partial permutations relied on representation theory and symmetric functions. A referee generously shared a combinatorial argument, allowing us to give a self-contained treatment of these results that does not rely on representation theory.

Equivariant cohomology of Grassmannian spanning lines

Given integers $n \geq k \geq d$, let $X_{n,k,d}$ be the moduli space of $n$-tuples of lines $(\ell_1, \dots, \ell_n)$ in $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $\ell_1 + \cdots + \ell_n$ has dimension $d$. We give a quotient presentation of the torus-equivariant cohomology of $X_{n,k,d}$. The form of this presentation, and in particular the torus parameters appearing therein, will arise from the orbit harmonics method of combinatorial deformation theory.

Involution matrix loci and orbit harmonics

Let $\mathrm{Mat}_{n \times n}(\mathbb{C})$ be the affine space of $n \times n$ complex matrices with coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$. We define graded quotients of $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ which carry an action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ by simultaneous permutation of rows and columns. These quotient rings are obtained by applying the orbit harmonics method to matrix loci corresponding to all involutions in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the conjugacy classes of involutions in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with a given number of fixed points. In the case of perfect matchings on $\{1, \dots, n\}$ with $n$ even, the Hilbert series of our quotient ring is related to Tracy-Widom distributions and its graded Frobenius image gives a refinement of the plethysm $s_{n/2}[s_2]$.

Harmonics and graded Ehrhart theory

The Ehrhart polynomial and Ehrhart series count lattice points in integer dilations of a lattice polytope. We introduce and study a $q$-deformation of the Ehrhart series, based on the notions of harmonic spaces and Macaulay's inverse systems for coordinate rings of finite point configurations. We conjecture that this $q$-Ehrhart series is a rational function, and introduce and study a bigraded algebra whose Hilbert series matches the $q$-Ehrhart series. Defining this algebra requires a new result on Macaulay inverse systems for Minkowski sums of point configurations.

Superspace coinvariants and hyperplane arrangements

Let $\Omega$ be the {\em superspace ring} of polynomial-valued differential forms on affine $n$-space. The natural action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on $n$-space induces an action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on $\Omega$. The {\em superspace coinvariant ring} is the quotient $SR$ of $\Omega$ by the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term. We give the first explicit basis of $SR$, proving a conjecture of Sagan and Swanson. Our techniques use the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We relate $SR$ to instances of the Solomon-Terao algebras of Abe-Maeno-Murai-Numata and use exact sequences relating the derivation modules of certain `southwest closed' arrangements to obtain the desired basis of $SR$.

Tutte polynomials in superspace

We associate a quotient of superspace to any hyperplane arrangement by considering the differential closure of an ideal generated by powers of certain homogeneous linear forms. This quotient is a superspace analogue of the external zonotopal algebra, and it further contains the central zonotopal algebra in the appropriate grading. We show that an evaluation of the bivariate Tutte polynomial is the bigraded Hilbert series of this quotient. We then use this fact to construct an explicit basis for the Macaulay inverse. These results generalize those of Ardila-Postnikov and Holtz-Ron. We also discuss enumerative consequences of our results in the setting of hyperplane arrangements.

Increasing subsequences, matrix loci, and Viennot shadows

Let $\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}$ be an $n \times n$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables over a field $\mathbb{F}$. We study the ideal $I_n \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ generated by all row and column variable sums and all products of two variables drawn from the same row or column. We show that the quotient $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ admits a standard monomial basis determined by Viennot's shadow line avatar of the Schensted correspondence. As a corollary, the Hilbert series of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ is the generating function of permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ by the length of their longest increasing subsequence. Along the way, we describe a `shadow junta' basis of the vector space of $k$-local permutation statistics. We also calculate the structure of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ as a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n \times \mathfrak{S}_n$-module.

The combinatorics of supertorus sheaf cohomology

Affine superspace $\mathbb{C}^{1 \mid n}$ has a single bosonic coordinate $z$ and $n$ fermionic coordinates $\theta_1, \dots, \theta_n$. Let $M$ be the supertorus obtained by quotienting $\mathbb{C}^{1 \mid n}$ by the abelian group generated by the maps $S: (z,\theta_1, \dots, \theta_n) \mapsto (z + 1, \theta_1, \dots, \theta_n)$ and $T: (z, \theta_1, \dots, \theta_n) \mapsto (z + t, \theta_1 + \alpha_1, \dots, \theta_n + \alpha_n)$ where $t \in \mathbb{C}$ has positive imaginary part and $\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_n$ are independent fermionic parameters. We compute the zeroth and first cohomology groups of the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}$ of $M$ as doubly graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules, exhibiting an instance of Serre duality between these groups. We use skein relations and noncrossing matchings to give a combinatorial presentation of $H^0(M,\mathcal{O})$ in terms of generators and relations.

The Hilbert series of the superspace coinvariant ring

Let $\Omega_n$ be the ring of polynomial-valued holomorphic differential forms on complex $n$-space, referred to in physics as the superspace ring of rank $n$. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts diagonally on $\Omega_n$ by permuting commuting and anticommuting generators simultaneously. We let $SI_n \subseteq \Omega_n$ be the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term and study the quotient $SR_n = \Omega_n / SI_n$ of superspace by this ideal. We calculate the doubly-graded Hilbert series of $SR_n$ and prove an `operator theorem' which characterizes the harmonic space $SH_n \subseteq \Omega_n$ attached to $SR_n$ in terms of the Vandermonde determinant and certain differential operators. Our methods employ commutative algebra results which were used in the study of Hessenberg varieties. Our results prove conjectures of N. Bergeron, Li, Machacek, Sulzgruber, Swanson, Wallach, and Zabrocki.

Zonotopal algebras, orbit harmonics, and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of symmetric quivers

We apply the method of orbit harmonics to the set of break divisors and orientable divisors on graphs to obtain the central and external zonotopal algebras respectively. We then relate a construction of Efimov in the context of cohomological Hall algebras to the central zonotopal algebra of a graph $G_{Q,\gamma}$ constructed from a symmetric quiver $Q$ with enough loops and a dimension vector $\gamma$. This provides a concrete combinatorial perspective on the former work, allowing us to identify the quantum Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the Hilbert series of the space of $S_{\gamma}$-invariants of the Postnikov-Shapiro slim subgraph space attached to $G_{Q,\gamma}$. The connection with orbit harmonics in turn allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative combinatorial interpretation to numerical Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the number of $S_{\gamma}$-orbits under the permutation action on the set of break divisors on $G_{Q,\gamma}$. We conclude with several representation-theoretic consequences, whose combinatorial ramifications may be of independent interest.
