Analysis on fibred cusp spaces

We give a survey of analytic and geometric results on `fibred cusp spaces', a large class of non-compact Riemannian manifolds which include the regular parts of singular spaces with incomplete cusp singularities as well as complete spaces with asymptotically hyperbolic cusp or asymptotically Euclidean structures at infinity. These results cover topics in spectral geometry, in particular analytic torsion and index theory, and boundary value problems. The underlying tools include a careful microlocal analysis of the resolvent and the heat kernel. We include an exposition of the geometric and analytic foundations and sketch the ideas of the proofs of the main theorems. Special emphasis is put on the common features of and the differences between the incomplete and various kinds of complete settings.

Scattering theory for difference equations with operator coefficients

We consider a second order difference equation with operator-valued coefficients. More precisely, we study either compact or trace class perturbations of the discrete Laplacian in the Hilbert space of bi-infinite square-summable sequence with entries in a fixed Hilbert space. We discuss its continuous and discrete spectrum, as well as properties of the associated scattering matrix.

Generalized Yamabe Flows

In this work we introduce a family of conformal flows generalizing the classical Yamabe flow. We prove that for a large class of such flows long-time existence holds, and the arguments are in fact simpler than in the classical case. Moreover, we establish convergence for the case of negative scalar curvature and expect a similar statement for the positive and the flat cases as well.

Phase transitions and minimal interfaces on manifolds with conical singularities

Using $\Gamma$-convergence, we study the Cahn-Hilliard problem with interface width parameter $\varepsilon > 0$ for phase transitions on manifolds with conical singularities. We prove that minimizers of the corresponding energy functional exist and converge, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, to a function that takes only two values with an interface along a hypersurface that has minimal area among those satisfying a volume constraint. In a numerical example, we use continuation and bifurcation methods to study families of critical points at small $\varepsilon > 0$ on 2D elliptical cones, parameterized by height and ellipticity of the base. Some of these critical points are minimizers with interfaces crossing the cone tip. On the other hand, we prove that interfaces which are minimizers of the perimeter functional, corresponding to $\varepsilon = 0$, never pass through the cone tip for general cones with angle less than $2\pi$. Thus tip minimizers for finite $\varepsilon > 0$ must become saddles as $\varepsilon \to 0$, and we numerically identify the associated bifurcation, finding a delicate interplay of $\varepsilon > 0$ and the cone parameters in our example.

Analytic torsion for fibred boundary metrics and conic degeneration

We study the renormalized analytic torsion of complete manifolds with fibred boundary metrics, also referred to as $\phi$-metrics. We establish invariance of the torsion under suitable deformations of the metric, and establish a gluing formula. As an application, we relate the analytic torsions for complete $\phi$- and incomplete wedge-metrics. As a simple consequence we recover a result by Sher and Guillarmou about analytic torsion under conic degeneration.

Extremals of determinants for Laplacians on discrete surfaces

In this note we pursue a discrete analogue of a celebrated theorem by Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak, which states that in a fixed conformal class of Riemannian metrics of fixed volume on a closed Riemann surface, the zeta-determinant of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator is maximized on a metric of constant Gaussian curvature. We study the corresponding question for the discrete cotan Laplace operator on triangulated surfaces. We show for some types of triangulations that the determinant (excluding zero eigenvalues) of the discrete cotan-Laplacian is stationary at discrete metrics of constant discrete Gaussian curvature. We present some numerical calculations, which suggest that these stationary points are in fact minima, strangely opposite to the smooth situation. We suggest an explanation of this discrepancy.

Stability of $L^2-$invariants on stratified spaces

Let $\overline{M}$ be a compact smoothly stratified pseudo-manifold endowed with a wedge metric $g$. Let $\overline{M}_\Gamma$ be a Galois $\Gamma$-covering. Under additional assumptions on $\overline{M}$, satisfied for example by Witt pseudo-manifolds, we show that the $L^2$-Betti numbers and the Novikov-Shubin invariants are well defined. We then establish their invariance under a smoothly stratified, strongly stratum preserving homotopy equivalence, thus extending results of Dodziuk, Gromov and Shubin to these pseudo-manifolds.

Cheeger-M\"uller theorem for a wedge singularity along an embedded submanifold

In this paper we equate the analytic and the intersection Reidemeister torsions on spaces with a specific type of wedge singularities, which arise by turning the disc cross-sections in the tubular neighborhood of an embedded submanifold of even co-dimension into cones. Our result is related to a similar equation, in a setting disjoint from ours, which was previously obtained by Albin, Rochon and Sher.

Spectral zeta function on discrete tori and Epstein-Riemann conjecture

We consider the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of discrete tori which approximate the m-dimensional torus. In the special case m=1, Friedli and Karlsson derived an asymptotic expansion of the corresponding spectral zeta function in the critical strip, as the approximation parameter goes to infinity. There, the authors have also formulated a conjecture on this asymptotics, that is equivalent to the Riemann conjecture. In this paper, inspired by the work of Friedli and Karlsson, we prove that a similar asymptotic expansion holds for m=2. Similar argument applies to higher dimensions as well. A conjecture on this asymptotics gives an equivalent formulation of the Epstein-Riemann conjecture, if we replace the standard discrete Laplacian with the $9$-point star discrete Laplacian.

Prescribed mean curvature flow of non-compact space-like Cauchy hypersurfaces

In this paper we consider the prescribed mean curvature flow of a non-compact space-like Cauchy hypersurface of bounded geometry in a generalized Robertson-Walker space-time. We prove that the flow preserves the space-likeness condition and exists for infinite time. We also prove convergence in the setting of manifolds with boundary. Our discussion generalizes previous work by Ecker, Huisken, Gerhardt and others with respect to a crucial aspects: we consider any non-compact Cauchy hypersurface under the assumption of bounded geometry. Moreover, we specialize the aforementioned works by considering globally hyperbolic Lorentzian space-times equipped with a specific class of warped product metrics.

Convergence of the Yamabe flow on singular spaces with positive Yamabe constant

In this work, we study the convergence of the normalized Yamabe flow with positive Yamabe constant on a class of pseudo-manifolds that includes stratified spaces with iterated cone-edge metrics. We establish convergence under a low energy condition. We also prove a concentration - compactness dichotomy, and investigate what the alternatives to convergence are. We end by investigating a non-convergent example due to Viaclovsky in more detail.

Normalized Yamabe flow on manifolds with bounded geometry

The goal of this paper is to study Yamabe flow on a complete Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry with possibly infinite volume. In the case of infinite volume, standard volume normalization of the Yamabe flow fails and the flow may not converge. Instead, we consider a curvature normalized Yamabe flow, and assuming negative scalar curvature, prove its long-time existence and convergence. This extends the results of Su\'arez-Serrato and Tapie to a non-compact setting. In the appendix, we specify our analysis of a particular example of manifolds with bounded geometry, namely manifolds with fibered boundary metric. In this case, we obtain stronger estimates for the short-time solution using microlocal methods.

Ricci de Turck flow on incomplete manifolds

In this paper we construct a Ricci de Turck flow on any incomplete Riemannian manifold with bounded curvature. The central property of the flow is that it stays uniformly equivalent to the initial incomplete Riemannian metric, and in that sense preserves any given initial singularity structure. Together with the corresponding result by Shi for complete manifolds, this gives that any (complete or incomplete) manifold of bounded curvature can be evolved by the Ricci de Turck flow for a short time.

A Survey on the Ricci flow on Singular Spaces

In this survey we provide an overview of our recent results concerning Ricci de Turck flow on spaces with isolated conical singularities. The crucial characteristic of the flow is that it preserves the conical singularity. Under certain conditions, Ricci flat metrics with isolated conical singularities are stable and positive scalar curvature is preserved under the flow. We also discuss the relation to Perelman's entropies in the singular setting, and outline open questions and future reseach directions.

Spectral geometry on manifolds with fibred boundary metrics II: heat kernel asymptotics

In this paper we continue the analysis of spectral problems in the setting of complete manifolds with fibred boundary metrics, also referred to as $\phi$-metrics, as initiated in our previous work. We consider the Hodge Laplacian for a $\phi$-metric and construct the corresponding heat kernel as a polyhomogeneous conormal distribution on an appropriate manifold with corners. Our discussion is a generalization of an earlier work by Albin and Sher, and provides a fundamental first step towards analysis of Ray-Singer torsion, eta-invariants and index theorems in the setting.

Spectral geometry on manifolds with fibred boundary metrics I: Low energy resolvent

We study the low energy resolvent of the Hodge Laplacian on a manifold equipped with a fibred boundary metric. We determine the precise asymptotic behavior of the resolvent as a fibred boundary (aka $\phi$-) pseudodifferential operator when the resolvent parameter tends to zero. This generalizes previous work by Guillarmou and Sher who considered asymptotically conic metrics, which correspond to the special case when the fibres are points. The new feature in the case of non-trivial fibres is that the resolvent has different asymptotic behavior on the subspace of forms that are fibrewise harmonic and on its orthogonal complement. To deal with this, we introduce an appropriate 'split' pseudodifferential calculus, building on and extending work by Grieser and Hunsicker. Our work sets the basis for the discussion of spectral invariants on $\phi$-manifolds.

Long-time existence of Yamabe flow on singular spaces with positive Yamabe constant

In this work we establish long-time existence of the normalized Yamabe flow with positive Yamabe constant on a class of manifolds that includes spaces with incomplete cone-edge singularities. We formulate our results axiomatically, so that our results extend to general stratified spaces as well, provided certain parabolic Schauder estimates hold. The central analytic tool is a parabolic Moser iteration, which yields uniform upper and lower bounds on both the solution and the scalar curvature.

Signatures of Witt spaces with boundary

Let M be a compact smoothly stratified pseudomanifold with boundary, satisfying the Witt assumption. In this paper we introduce the de Rham signature and the Hodge signature of M, and prove their equality. Next, building also on recent work of Albin and Gell-Redman, we extend the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theory established in our previous work under the hypothesis that M has stratification depth 1 to the general case, establishing in particular a signature formula on Witt spaces with boundary. In a parallel way we also pass to the case of a Galois covering M' of M with Galois group Gamma. Employing von Neumann algebras we introduce the de Rham Gamma-signature and the Hodge Gamma-signature and prove their equality, thus extending to Witt spaces a result proved by Lueck and Schick in the smooth case. Finally, extending work of Vaillant in the smooth case, we establish a formula for the Hodge Gamma-signature. As a consequence we deduce the fundamental result that equates the Cheeger-Gromov rho-invariant of the boundary of M' with the difference of the signatures of M and M'. We end the paper with two geometric applications of our results.
