The performance of large-pitch AC-LGAD with different N+ dose

AC-Coupled LGAD (AC-LGAD) is a new 4D detector developed based on the Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) technology, which can accurately measure the time and spatial information of particles. The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) designed a large-size AC-LGAD with a pitch of 2000~\SI{}{\micro\metre} and AC pad of 1000~\SI{}{\micro\metre}, and explored the effect of N+ layer dose on the spatial resolution and time resolution. The spatial resolution varied from 36~\SI{}{\micro\metre} to 16~\SI{}{\micro\metre} depending on N+ dose for a charge corresponding to about 12 minimum ionizing particles. The jitter component of the time resolution does not change significantly with different N+ doses, and it is about 15-17 ps measured by laser. The AC-LGAD with a low N+ dose has a large attenuation factor and better spatial resolution in the central region between pads. In these specific conditions, large signal attenuation factor and low noise level are beneficial to improve the spatial resolution of the AC-LGAD sensor.

DP-Image: Differential Privacy for Image Data in Feature Space

The excessive use of images in social networks, government databases, and industrial applications has posed great privacy risks and raised serious concerns from the public. Even though differential privacy (DP) is a widely accepted criterion that can provide a provable privacy guarantee, the application of DP on unstructured data such as images is not trivial due to the lack of a clear qualification on the meaningful difference between any two images. In this paper, for the first time, we introduce a novel notion of image-aware differential privacy, referred to as DP-image, that can protect user's personal information in images, from both human and AI adversaries. The DP-Image definition is formulated as an extended version of traditional differential privacy, considering the distance measurements between feature space vectors of images. Then we propose a mechanism to achieve DP-Image by adding noise to an image feature vector. Finally, we conduct experiments with a case study on face image privacy. Our results show that the proposed DP-Image method provides excellent DP protection on images, with a controllable distortion to faces.

AdaSelection: Accelerating Deep Learning Training through Data Subsampling

In this paper, we introduce AdaSelection, an adaptive sub-sampling method to identify the most informative sub-samples within each minibatch to speed up the training of large-scale deep learning models without sacrificing model performance. Our method is able to flexibly combines an arbitrary number of baseline sub-sampling methods incorporating the method-level importance and intra-method sample-level importance at each iteration. The standard practice of ad-hoc sampling often leads to continuous training with vast amounts of data from production environments. To improve the selection of data instances during forward and backward passes, we propose recording a constant amount of information per instance from these passes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by testing it across various types of inputs and tasks, including the classification tasks on both image and language datasets, as well as regression tasks. Compared with industry-standard baselines, AdaSelection consistently displays superior performance.

Higher-order link prediction via local information

Link prediction has been widely studied as an important research direction. Higher-order link prediction has gained especially significant attention since higher-order networks provide a more accurate description of real-world complex systems. However, higher-order networks contain more complex information than traditional pairwise networks, making the prediction of higher-order links a formidable challenging task. Recently, researchers have discovered that local features have advantages over long-range features in higher-order link prediction. Therefore, it is necessary to develop more efficient and concise higher-order link prediction algorithms based on local features. In this paper, we proposed two similarity metrics via local information, simplicial decomposition weight (SDW) and closed ratio weight (CRW), to predict possible future higher-order interactions (simplices) in simplicial networks. These two algorithms capture local higher-order information at two aspects: simplex decomposition and cliques' state (closed or open). We tested their performance in eight empirical simplicial networks, and the results show that our proposed metrics outperform other benchmarks in predicting third-order and fourth-order interactions (simplices) in most cases. In addition, we explore the robustness of the proposed algorithms, and the results suggest that the performance of these novel algorithms is advanced under different sizes of training sets.

Deep learning radiomics for assessment of gastroesophageal varices in people with compensated advanced chronic liver disease

Objective: Bleeding from gastroesophageal varices (GEV) is a medical emergency associated with high mortality. We aim to construct an artificial intelligence-based model of two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) of the liver and spleen to precisely assess the risk of GEV and high-risk gastroesophageal varices (HRV). Design: A prospective multicenter study was conducted in patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease. 305 patients were enrolled from 12 hospitals, and finally 265 patients were included, with 1136 liver stiffness measurement (LSM) images and 1042 spleen stiffness measurement (SSM) images generated by 2D-SWE. We leveraged deep learning methods to uncover associations between image features and patient risk, and thus conducted models to predict GEV and HRV. Results: A multi-modality Deep Learning Risk Prediction model (DLRP) was constructed to assess GEV and HRV, based on LSM and SSM images, and clinical information. Validation analysis revealed that the AUCs of DLRP were 0.91 for GEV (95% CI 0.90 to 0.93, p < 0.05) and 0.88 for HRV (95% CI 0.86 to 0.89, p < 0.01), which were significantly and robustly better than canonical risk indicators, including the value of LSM and SSM. Moreover, DLPR was better than the model using individual parameters, including LSM and SSM images. In HRV prediction, the 2D-SWE images of SSM outperform LSM (p < 0.01). Conclusion: DLRP shows excellent performance in predicting GEV and HRV over canonical risk indicators LSM and SSM. Additionally, the 2D-SWE images of SSM provided more information for better accuracy in predicting HRV than the LSM.

Eta Form and Spectral Sequence for the Composition of Fibrations

In this paper, inspired by the spectral sequences constructed by signature operators with respect to the composition of fibrations, we define the "spectral sequences" for fiberwise Dirac operators and prove the equivariant family version of the adiabatic limit formula of eta invariants using the heat kernel method and the analytic localization techniques established by Bismut-Lebeau. In our formula, the remainder terms are constructed by "spectral sequences" and completely extend those of Dai and Bunke-Ma.

Multi-task Combinatorial Optimization: Adaptive Multi-modality Knowledge Transfer by an Explicit Inter-task Distance

Scheduling problems are often tackled independently, and rarely solved by leveraging the commonalities across problems. Lack of awareness of this inter-task similarity could impede the search efficacy. A quantifiable relationship between scheduling problems is to-date rather unclear, how to leverage it in combinatorial optimization remains largely unknown, and its effects on search are also undeterminable. This paper addresses these hard questions by delving into quantifiable useful inter-task relationships and, through leveraging the explicit relationship, presenting a speed-up algorithm. After deriving an analytical inter-task distance metric to quantitatively reveal latent similarity across scheduling problems, an adaptive transfer of multi-modality knowledge is devised to promptly adjust the transfer in forms of explicit and implicit knowledge in response to heterogeneity in the inter-task discrepancy. For faintly related problems with disappearing dependences, a problem transformation function is suggested with a matching-feature-based greedy policy, and the function projects faintly related problems into a latent space where these problems gain similarity in a way that creates search speed-ups. Finally, a multi-task scatter search combinatorial algorithm is formed and a large-scale multi-task benchmark is generated serving the purposes of validation. That the algorithm exhibits dramatic speed-ups of 2~3 orders of magnitude, as compared to direct problem solving in strongly related problems and 3 times faster in weakly related ones, suggests leveraging commonality across problems could be successful.

A Syntactic Adaptive Problem Solver Learning Landscape Structures for Scheduling in Clinical Laboratory

This paper attempts to derive a mathematical formulation for real-practice clinical laboratory schedul-ing, and to present a syntactic adaptive problem solver by leveraging landscape structures. After formulating scheduling of medical tests as a distributed scheduling problem in heterogeneous, flexible job shop environment, we establish a mixed integer programming model to minimize mean test turn-around time. Preliminary landscape analysis sustains that these clinics-orientated scheduling instances are difficult to solve. The search difficulty motivates the search for an adaptive problem solver to reduce repetitive algorithm-tuning work, but with a guaranteed convergence. Yet, under a search strategy, relatedness from exploitation competence to landscape topology is not transparent. Under strategies that impose different-magnitude perturbations, we investigate changes in landscape struc-ture and find that disturbance amplitude, local-global optima connectivity, landscape's ruggedness and plateau size fairly predict strategies' efficacy. Medium-size instances of 100 tasks are easier un-der smaller-perturbation strategies that lead to smoother landscapes with smaller plateaus. For large-size instances of 200-500 tasks, existing strategies at hand, having either larger or smaller perturba-tions, face more rugged landscapes with larger plateaus that impede search. Our hypothesis that me-dium perturbations may generate smoother landscapes with smaller plateaus drives our design of this new strategy and its verification by experiments. Composite neighborhoods managed by meta-Lamarckian learning show beyond average performance, implying reliability when prior knowledge of landscape is unknown.

Multi-hop Commonsense Knowledge Injection Framework for Zero-Shot Commonsense Question Answering

Commonsense question answering (QA) research requires machines to answer questions based on commonsense knowledge. However, this research requires expensive labor costs to annotate data as the basis of research, and models that rely on fine-tuning paradigms only apply to specific tasks, rather than learn a general commonsense reasoning ability. As a more robust method, zero-shot commonsense question answering shows a good prospect. The current zero-shot framework tries to convert triples in commonsense knowledge graphs (KGs) into QA-form samples as the pre-trained data source to incorporate commonsense knowledge into the model. However, this method ignores the multi-hop relationship in the KG, which is also an important central problem in commonsense reasoning. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-hop commonsense knowledge injection framework. Specifically, it explores multi-hop reasoning paradigm in KGs that conform to linguistic logic, and we further propose two multi-hop QA generation methods based on KGs. Then, we utilize contrastive learning to pre-train the model with the synthetic QA dataset to inject multi-hop commonsense knowledge. Extensive experiments on five commonsense question answering benchmarks demonstrate that our framework achieves state-of-art performance.

Dealing With Heterogeneous 3D MR Knee Images: A Federated Few-Shot Learning Method With Dual Knowledge Distillation

Federated Learning has gained popularity among medical institutions since it enables collaborative training between clients (e.g., hospitals) without aggregating data. However, due to the high cost associated with creating annotations, especially for large 3D image datasets, clinical institutions do not have enough supervised data for training locally. Thus, the performance of the collaborative model is subpar under limited supervision. On the other hand, large institutions have the resources to compile data repositories with high-resolution images and labels. Therefore, individual clients can utilize the knowledge acquired in the public data repositories to mitigate the shortage of private annotated images. In this paper, we propose a federated few-shot learning method with dual knowledge distillation. This method allows joint training with limited annotations across clients without jeopardizing privacy. The supervised learning of the proposed method extracts features from limited labeled data in each client, while the unsupervised data is used to distill both feature and response-based knowledge from a national data repository to further improve the accuracy of the collaborative model and reduce the communication cost. Extensive evaluations are conducted on 3D magnetic resonance knee images from a private clinical dataset. Our proposed method shows superior performance and less training time than other semi-supervised federated learning methods. Self-referenced Spectral Interferometry for Single-shot Characterization of Ultrashort Free-electron Laser Pulses

Attosecond x-ray pulse with known spectro-temporal information is an essential tool for the investigation of ultrafast electron dynamics in quantum systems. Ultrafast free-electron lasers (FELs) have the unique advantage on unprecedented high-intensity at x-ray wavelengths. However, no suitable method has been established so far for the spectro-temporal characterization of these ultrashort x-ray pulses. In this letter, a simple method has been proposed based on self-referenced spectral interferometry for reconstructing ultrashort FEL pulses both in temporal and spectral domains. We have demonstrated that the proposed method is reliable to reconstruct the temporal profile and phase of attosecond x-ray FEL pulses with an error of only a few-percent-level. Moreover, the first proof-of-principle experiment has been performed to achieve single-shot spectro-temporal characterization of ultrashort pulses from a high-gain FEL. The precision of the proposed method will be enhanced with the decrease of the pulse duration, paving a new way for complete attosecond pulse characterization at x-ray FELs.

PStrata: An R Package for Principal Stratification

Post-treatment confounding is a common problem in causal inference, including special cases of noncompliance, truncation by death, surrogate endpoint, etc. Principal stratification (Frangakis and Rubin 2002) is a general framework for defining and estimating causal effects in the presence of post-treatment confounding. A prominent special case is the instrumental variable approach to noncompliance in randomized experiments (Angrist, Imbens, and Rubin 1996). Despite its versatility, principal stratification is not accessible to the vast majority of applied researchers because its inherent latent mixture structure requires complex inference tools and highly customized programming. We develop the R package PStrata to automatize statistical analysis of principal stratification for several common scenarios. PStrata supports both Bayesian and frequentist paradigms. For the Bayesian paradigm, the computing architecture combines R, C++, Stan, where R provides user-interface, Stan automatizes posterior sampling, and C++ bridges the two by automatically generating Stan code. For the Frequentist paradigm, PStrata implements a triply-robust weighting estimator. PStrata accommodates regular outcomes and time-to-event outcomes with both unstructured and clustered data.

Practical Lessons on Optimizing Sponsored Products in eCommerce

In this paper, we study multiple problems from sponsored product optimization in ad system, including position-based de-biasing, click-conversion multi-task learning, and calibration on predicted click-through-rate (pCTR). We propose a practical machine learning framework that provides the solutions to such problems without structural change to existing machine learning models, thus can be combined with most machine learning models including shallow models (e.g. gradient boosting decision trees, support vector machines). In this paper, we first propose data and feature engineering techniques to handle the aforementioned problems in ad system; after that, we evaluate the benefit of our practical framework on real-world data sets from our traffic logs from online shopping site. We show that our proposed practical framework with data and feature engineering can also handle the perennial problems in ad systems and bring increments to multiple evaluation metrics.

No Place to Hide: Dual Deep Interaction Channel Network for Fake News Detection based on Data Augmentation

Online Social Network (OSN) has become a hotbed of fake news due to the low cost of information dissemination. Although the existing methods have made many attempts in news content and propagation structure, the detection of fake news is still facing two challenges: one is how to mine the unique key features and evolution patterns, and the other is how to tackle the problem of small samples to build the high-performance model. Different from popular methods which take full advantage of the propagation topology structure, in this paper, we propose a novel framework for fake news detection from perspectives of semantic, emotion and data enhancement, which excavates the emotional evolution patterns of news participants during the propagation process, and a dual deep interaction channel network of semantic and emotion is designed to obtain a more comprehensive and fine-grained news representation with the consideration of comments. Meanwhile, the framework introduces a data enhancement module to obtain more labeled data with high quality based on confidence which further improves the performance of the classification model. Experiments show that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Deformable Kernel Expansion Model for Efficient Arbitrary-shaped Scene Text Detection

Scene text detection is a challenging computer vision task due to the high variation in text shapes and ratios. In this work, we propose a scene text detector named Deformable Kernel Expansion (DKE), which incorporates the merits of both segmentation and contour-based detectors. DKE employs a segmentation module to segment the shrunken text region as the text kernel, then expands the text kernel contour to obtain text boundary by regressing the vertex-wise offsets. Generating the text kernel by segmentation enables DKE to inherit the arbitrary-shaped text region modeling capability of segmentation-based detectors. Regressing the kernel contour with some sampled vertices enables DKE to avoid the complicated pixel-level post-processing and better learn contour deformation as the contour-based detectors. Moreover, we propose an Optimal Bipartite Graph Matching Loss (OBGML) that measures the matching error between the predicted contour and the ground truth, which efficiently minimizes the global contour matching distance. Extensive experiments on CTW1500, Total-Text, MSRA-TD500, and ICDAR2015 demonstrate that DKE achieves a good tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency in scene text detection.

Low-frequency Image Deep Steganography: Manipulate the Frequency Distribution to Hide Secrets with Tenacious Robustness

Image deep steganography (IDS) is a technique that utilizes deep learning to embed a secret image invisibly into a cover image to generate a container image. However, the container images generated by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are vulnerable to attacks that distort their high-frequency components. To address this problem, we propose a novel method called Low-frequency Image Deep Steganography (LIDS) that allows frequency distribution manipulation in the embedding process. LIDS extracts a feature map from the secret image and adds it to the cover image to yield the container image. The container image is not directly output by the CNNs, and thus, it does not contain high-frequency artifacts. The extracted feature map is regulated by a frequency loss to ensure that its frequency distribution mainly concentrates on the low-frequency domain. To further enhance robustness, an attack layer is inserted to damage the container image. The retrieval network then retrieves a recovered secret image from a damaged container image. Our experiments demonstrate that LIDS outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of robustness, while maintaining high fidelity and specificity. By avoiding high-frequency artifacts and manipulating the frequency distribution of the embedded feature map, LIDS achieves improved robustness against attacks that distort the high-frequency components of container images.

A Critical Review of Inductive Logic Programming Techniques for Explainable AI

Despite recent advances in modern machine learning algorithms, the opaqueness of their underlying mechanisms continues to be an obstacle in adoption. To instill confidence and trust in artificial intelligence systems, Explainable Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a response to improving modern machine learning algorithms' explainability. Inductive Logic Programming (ILP), a subfield of symbolic artificial intelligence, plays a promising role in generating interpretable explanations because of its intuitive logic-driven framework. ILP effectively leverages abductive reasoning to generate explainable first-order clausal theories from examples and background knowledge. However, several challenges in developing methods inspired by ILP need to be addressed for their successful application in practice. For example, existing ILP systems often have a vast solution space, and the induced solutions are very sensitive to noises and disturbances. This survey paper summarizes the recent advances in ILP and a discussion of statistical relational learning and neural-symbolic algorithms, which offer synergistic views to ILP. Following a critical review of the recent advances, we delineate observed challenges and highlight potential avenues of further ILP-motivated research toward developing self-explanatory artificial intelligence systems.

Enhance Local Consistency in Federated Learning: A Multi-Step Inertial Momentum Approach

Federated learning (FL), as a collaborative distributed training paradigm with several edge computing devices under the coordination of a centralized server, is plagued by inconsistent local stationary points due to the heterogeneity of the local partial participation clients, which precipitates the local client-drifts problems and sparks off the unstable and slow convergence, especially on the aggravated heterogeneous dataset. To address these issues, we propose a novel federated learning algorithm, named FedMIM, which adopts the multi-step inertial momentum on the edge devices and enhances the local consistency for free during the training to improve the robustness of the heterogeneity. Specifically, we incorporate the weighted global gradient estimations as the inertial correction terms to guide both the local iterates and stochastic gradient estimation, which can reckon the global objective optimization on the edges' heterogeneous dataset naturally and maintain the demanding consistent iteration locally. Theoretically, we show that FedMIM achieves the $\mathcal{O}(\frac{1}{\sqrt{SKT}})$ convergence rate with a linear speedup property with respect to the number of selected clients $S$ and proper local interval $K$ in communication round $T$ without convex assumption. Empirically, we conduct comprehensive experiments on various real-world datasets and demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed FedMIM against several state-of-the-art baselines.
