A class of port-Hamiltonian systems with general time delays

We define a class of infinite dimensional linear port-Hamiltonian delay systems, give a characterization for such systems, and provide an easily verifiable sufficient condition to belong to this class, thereby extending the study by Breiten, Hinsen and Unger in [IEEE Trans. Autom. Control vol. 69, no. 12 (2024), pp. 8924-8930, doi: 10.1109/TAC.2024.3464332]. The results rely on the operator semigroup theoretic treatment of linear delay PDEs.

Feedback approaches for set-point stabilization of interacting particle systems

We explore the problem of asymptotically stabilizing a class of interacting particle systems to a prescribed particle configuration with zero velocity. The class of interacting particle systems is motivated by the Cucker-Smale model on the mean-field level. Rather than designing a feedback by manually solving an IDA-PBC matching equation, we derive a feedback using an instantaneous rolling horizon control algorithm. We show that this feedback preserves the port-Hamiltonian structure of the interacting particle system and therefore allows for an interpretation in the IDA-PBC framework. Additionally, the energy balance of the closed-loop Hamiltonian provides an important tool to prove convergence of the particles' velocities and interaction forces in discrete and continuous time. If the control operator is surjective, we additionally prove convergence of the particle positions to the prescribed configuration.

On the Hautus test for exact observability of normal semigroups

Let $T$ be an exponentially stable strongly continuous semigroup on a Hilbert space $X$, $A$ its generator, $X_1$ the domain of $A$ with the norm $\|v\|_1 := \|Av\|$, and $C$ an admissible observation operator taking values in a Hilbert space $Y$. Russell and Weiss conjectured that if $(A,C)$ satisfies the infinite-dimensional Hautus test, then $(A,C)$ is exactly observable. After a counterexample was found their conjecture was modified to include the additional assumption that $T$ is similar to a contraction semigroup. We disprove this modified conjecture by constructing a counterexample in which $A$ is normal, $X$ has an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors of $A$ and $C: X_1 \to Y$ is Hilbert-Schmidt. Since $A$ is normal and $T$ is exponentially stable, it follows that $T$ is a contraction semigroup. In contrast, we prove that the Hautus test implies exact observability for self-adjoint $A$. Finally, we show that if $A$ is normal and $C:X_1 \to Y$ is compact, then the Hautus test implies that $A$ has compact resolvent. Consequently, for normal $A$ and finite-dimensional $Y$ the Hautus test implies exact observability.

Real and complex stability radii for a class of transport networks

We characterize stability and its robustness for a class of boundary controlled, boundary observed hyperbolic partial differential equations. In particular, we show that asymptotic and exponential stability coincide for this class. Furthermore, we introduce the real and complex stability radii for which we give explicit formulas. In addition, we consider the dual system and its application to controllability and observability. Our main results are illustrated with two examples.

Well-posedness and controllability of hyperbolic boundary control systems on a one-dimensional spatial domain

The aim of this paper is to investigate the well-posedness of a class of boundary control and observation systems on a one dimensional spatial domain. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition characterizing the well-posedness of these systems. Furthermore, we show that the well-posedness and full control and observation implies exact controllability and exact observability. The theoretical results are illustrated using Euler-Bernoulli beam models.

Unknown input observer design for a class of coupled wave PDE systems

This paper deals with the problem of designing unknown input observers for a class of coupled semilinear wave partial differential equations (PDE) systems. A state observer is designed to estimate the uncertain coupled wave PDE systems. Then, the analysis of the asymptotic stability and $H_{\infty}$ performance for the observer design of coupled wave PDE systems is investigated. Some sufficient conditions of asymptotic stability for the observer error system with disturbance attenuation level are derived via matrix inequalities based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, a numerical simulation is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the obtained result.

Differential algebraic system nodes

Infinite-dimensional differential algebraic equations (short DAEs) with input and output are studied. The concepts of operator nodes and system nodes are extended to systems which additionally may include algebraic constraints. Extrapolation spaces are investigated for differential-algebraic equations, and solutions of the extrapolated DAE are characterized using augmented Wong sequences. The resulting theory is then applied to characterize infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian DAEs.

Integrated Semigroups for abstract differential-algebraic equations

We study integrated semigroups for infinite-dimensional differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) admitting a resolvent index. Building on the notion of integrated semigroups for the abstract Cauchy problem $\frac{d}{d t}x=Ax$, we extend this concept to the DAE setting. The resulting framework is used to analyze inhomogeneous DAEs and plays a central role in characterizing their solutions.

Dissipativity-based time domain decomposition for optimal control of hyperbolic PDEs

We propose a time domain decomposition approach to optimal control of partial differential equations (PDEs) based on semigroup theoretic methods. We formulate the optimality system consisting of two coupled forward-backward PDEs, the state and adjoint equation, as a sum of dissipative operators, which enables a Peaceman-Rachford-type fixed-point iteration. The iteration steps may be understood and implemented as solutions of many decoupled, and therefore highly parallelizable, time-distributed optimal control problems. We prove the convergence of the state, the control, and the corresponding adjoint state in function space. Due to the general framework of $C_0$-(semi)groups, the results are particularly well applicable, e.g., to hyperbolic equations, such as beam or wave equations. We illustrate the convergence and efficiency of the proposed method by means of two numerical examples subject to a 2D wave equation and a 3D heat equation.

LQ optimal control for infinite-dimensional passive systems

We study the Linear-Quadratic optimal control problem for a general class of infinite-dimensional passive systems, allowing for unbounded input and output operators. We show that under mild assumptions, the finite cost condition is always satisfied. Moreover, we show that the optimal cost operator is a contraction. In the case where the system is energy preserving, the optimal cost operator is shown to be the identity, which allows to deduce easily the unique stabilizing optimal control. In this case, we derive an explicit solution to an adapted operator Riccati equation. We apply our results to boundary control systems, first-order port-Hamiltonian systems and an Euler-Bernoulli beam with shear force control.

Riccati equations and LQ-optimal control for a class of hyperbolic PDEs

We derive an explicit solution to the operator Riccati equation solving the Linear-Quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem for a class of boundary controlled hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Different descriptions of the system are used to obtain different representations of the operator Riccati equation. By means of an example, we illustrate the importance of considering an extended operator Riccati equation to solve the LQ-optimal control problem for our class of systems.

Well-posedness of a class of infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems with boundary control and observation

We characterize the well-posedness of a class of infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems with boundary control and observation. This class includes in particular the Euler-Bernoulli beam equations and more generally 1D linear infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems with boundary control and observation as well as coupled systems. It is known, that for the Timoshenko beam models internal well-posedness implies well-posedness of the overall system. By means of an example we show that this is not true for the Euler-Bernoulli beam models. An easy verifiable equivalent condition for well-posedness of the overall system will be presented. We will conclude the paper by applying the obtained results to several Euler-Bernoulli beam models.

$H^\infty$-control for a class of boundary controlled hyperbolic PDEs

A solution to the suboptimal $H^\infty$-control problem is given for a class of hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). The first result of this manuscript shows that the considered class of PDEs admits an equivalent representation as an infinite-dimensional discrete-time system. Taking advantage of this, this manuscript shows that it is equivalent to solve the suboptimal $H^\infty$-control problem for a finite-dimensional discrete-time system whose matrices are derived from the PDEs. After computing the solution to this much simpler problem, the solution to the original problem can be deduced easily. In particular, the optimal compensator solution to the suboptimal $H^\infty$-control problem is governed by a set of hyperbolic PDEs, actuated and observed at the boundary. We illustrate our results with a boundary controlled and boundary observed vibrating string.

Spectral analysis of a class of linear hyperbolic partial differential equations

A class of linear hyperbolic partial differential equations, sometimes called networks of waves, is considered. For this class of systems, necessary and sufficient conditions are formulated on the system matrices for the operator dynamics to be a Riesz-spectral operator. In that case, its spectrum is computed explicitly, together with the corresponding eigenfunctions, which constitutes the main result of our note. In particular, this enables to characterize easily many different concepts, such as stability. We apply our results to characterize exponential stability of a co-current heat exchanger.

On the Weierstra{\ss} form of infinite dimensional differential algebraic equations

The solvability for infinite dimensional differential algebraic equations possessing a resolvent index and a Weierstra{\ss} form is studied. In particular, the concept of integrated semigroups is used to determine a subset on which solutions exist and are unique. This information is later used for a important class of systems, namely, port-Hamiltonian differential algebraic equations.

Linear-Quadratic optimal control for boundary controlled networks of waves

Linear-Quadratic optimal controls are computed for a class of boundary controlled, boundary observed hyperbolic infinite-dimensional systems, which may be viewed as networks of waves. The main results of this manuscript consist in converting the infinite-dimensional continuous-time systems into infinite-dimensional discrete-time systems for which the operators dynamics are matrices, in solving the LQ-optimal control problem in discrete-time and then in interpreting the solution in the continuous-time variables, giving rise to the optimal boundary control input. The results are applied to two examples, a small network of three vibrating strings and a co-current heat-exchanger, for which boundary sensors and actuators are considered.

Index concepts for linear differential-algebraic equations in finite and infinite dimensions

Different index concepts for linear differential-algebraic equations are defined in the general Banach space setting, and compared. For regular finite-dimensional linear differential-algebraic equations, all these indices exist and are equivalent. For infinite-dimensional systems, the situation is more complex. It is proven that although some indices imply others, in general they are not equivalent. The situation is illustrated with a number of examples.

Infinite-dimensional linear port-Hamiltonian systems on a one-dimensional spatial domain: An Introduction

We provide an introduction to infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems. As this research field is quite rich, we restrict ourselves to the class of infinite-dimensional linear port-Hamiltonian systems on a one-dimensional spatial domainand we will focus on topics such as Dirac structures, well-posedness, stability and stabilizability, Riesz-bases and dissipativity. We combine the abstract operator theoretic approach with the more physical approach based on Hamiltonians. This enables us to derive easy verifiable conditions for well-posedness and stability.
