TactileAR: Active Tactile Pattern Reconstruction

High-resolution (HR) contact surface information is essential for robotic grasping and precise manipulation tasks. However, it remains a challenge for current taxel-based sensors to obtain HR tactile information. In this paper, we focus on utilizing low-resolution (LR) tactile sensors to reconstruct the localized, dense, and HR representation of contact surfaces. In particular, we build a Gaussian triaxial tactile sensor degradation model and propose a tactile pattern reconstruction framework based on the Kalman filter. This framework enables the reconstruction of 2-D HR contact surface shapes using collected LR tactile sequences. In addition, we present an active exploration strategy to enhance the reconstruction efficiency. We evaluate the proposed method in real-world scenarios with comparison to existing prior-information-based approaches. Experimental results confirm the efficiency of the proposed approach and demonstrate satisfactory reconstructions of complex contact surface shapes. Code: https://github.com/wmtlab/tactileAR

Near-Field Coupling Coil System: A Novel Radiofrequency Coil Solution for MRI

The performance of radiofrequency (RF) coils has a significant impact on the quality and speed of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Consequently, rigid coils with attached cables are commonly employed to achieve optimal SNR performance and parallel imaging capability. However, since the adoption of MRI in clinical imaging, both patients and doctors have long suffered from the poor examination experience and physical strain caused by the bulky housings and cumbersome cables of traditional coils. This paper presents a new architectural concept, the Near-Field Coupling (NFC) coil system, which integrates a pickup coil array within the magnet with an NFC coil worn by the patient. In contrast to conventional coils, the NFC coil system obviates the necessity for bed-mounted connectors. It provides a lightweight, cost-effective solution that enhances patient comfort and supports disposable, custom designs for the NFC coils. The paper also derives the SNR expression for the NFC coil system, proposes two key design principles, and demonstrates the system's potential in SNR and parallel imaging through an implementation case.

CMD: A Cache-assisted GPU Memory Deduplication Architecture

Massive off-chip accesses in GPUs are the main performance bottleneck, and we divided these accesses into three types: (1) Write, (2) Data-Read, and (3) Read-Only. Besides, We find that many writes are duplicate, and the duplication can be inter-dup and intra-dup. While inter-dup means different memory blocks are identical, and intra-dup means all the 4B elements in a line are the same. In this work, we propose a cache-assisted GPU memory deduplication architecture named CMD to reduce the off-chip accesses via utilizing the data duplication in GPU applications. CMD includes three key design contributions which aim to reduce the three kinds of accesses: (1) A novel GPU memory deduplication architecture that removes the inter-dup and inter-dup lines. As for the inter-dup detection, we reduce the extra read requests caused by the traditional read-verify hash process. Besides, we design several techniques to manage duplicate blocks. (2) We propose a cache-assisted read scheme to reduce the reads to duplicate data. When an L2 cache miss wants to read the duplicate block, if the reference block has been fetched to L2 and it is clean, we can copy it to the L2 missed block without accessing off-chip DRAM. As for the reads to intra-dup data, CMD uses the on-chip metadata cache to get the data. (3) When a cache line is evicted, the clean sectors in the line are invalidated while the dirty sectors are written back. However, most read-only victims are re-referenced from DRAM more than twice. Therefore, we add a full-associate FIFO to accommodate the read-only (it is also clean) victims to reduce the re-reference counts. Experiments show that CMD can decrease the off-chip accesses by 31.01%, reduce the energy by 32.78% and improve performance by 37.79%. Besides, CMD can improve the performance of memory-intensive workloads by 50.18%.

Possible $Σ_c^* \barΣ$ molecular states

We investigate the possibility of deuteron-like $Σ_c^*\barΣ$ bound states within the one-boson-exchange model and systematically analyze the effects of the contact-range $δ^{3}(\vec{r}\,)$ potential, the tensor term from the vector-meson exchange, and nonlocal potentials due to the dependence on the sum of the initial and final state center-of-mass momenta. We find that the pion-exchange potential including the $δ^{3}(\vec{r}\,)$ term and the tensor term of the $ρ$-exchange potential exhibit comparable magnitudes but opposite signs for any $S$-wave baryon-antibaryon systems. For the $Σ_c^*\barΣ$ system, it is most likely to form bound states with mass around 3.7 GeV in the $I(J^P)=0(2^-)$ and $1(2^-)$ channels.

$σ$ exchange in the one-boson exchange model involving the ground state octet baryons

Based on the one-boson-exchange framework that the $σ$ meson serves as an effective parameterization for the correlated scalar-isoscalar $ππ$ interaction, we calculate the coupling constants of the $σ$ to the $\frac{1}{2}^+$ ground state light baryon octet ${\mathbb B}$ by matching the amplitude of ${\mathbb B}\bar{\mathbb B}\toππ\to\bar{\mathbb B}{\mathbb B}$ to that of ${\mathbb B}\bar{\mathbb B}\toσ\to\bar{\mathbb B}{\mathbb B}$. The former is calculated using a dispersion relation, supplemented with chiral perturbation theory results for the ${\mathbb B}{\mathbb B}ππ$ couplings and the Muskhelishvili-Omn\` es representation for the $ππ$ rescattering. Explicitly, the coupling constants are obtained as $g_{NNσ}=8.7_{-1.9}^{+1.7}$, $g_{ΣΣσ}=3.5_{-1.3}^{+1.8}$, $g_{ΞΞσ}=2.5_{-1.4}^{+1.5}$, and $g_{ΛΛσ}=6.8_{-1.7}^{+1.5}$. These coupling constants can be used in the one-boson-exchange model calculations of the interaction of light baryons with other hadrons.

Intelligent trading strategy based on improved directional change and regime change detection

Previous research primarily characterized price movements according to time intervals, resulting in temporal discontinuity and overlooking crucial activities in financial markets. Directional Change (DC) is an alternative approach to sampling price data, highlighting significant points while blurring out noise details in price movements. However, traditional DC treated the thresholds of upward and downward trends with distinct intrinsic patterns as equivalent and preset them as fixed values, which are dependent on the subjective judgment of traders. To enhance the generalization performance of this methodology, we improved DC by introducing a modified threshold selection technique. Specifically, we addressed upward and downward trends distinctly by incorporating a decay coefficient. Further, we simultaneously optimized the threshold and decay coefficient using the Bayesian Optimization Algorithm (BOA). Additionally, we recognized the abnormal market state by regime change detection based on the Hidden Markov Model (RCD-HMM) to reduce the risk. Our Intelligent Trading Algorithm (ITA) was constructed based on above methods and the experiments were carried out on tick data from diverse currency pairs in the forex market. The experimental results showed a significant increase in profit and reduction in risk of DC-based trading strategies, which demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed methods.

Optimal Variable Speed Limit Control Strategy on Freeway Segments under Fog Conditions

Fog is a critical external factor that threatens traffic safety on freeways. Variable speed limit (VSL) control can effectively harmonize vehicle speed and improve safety. However, most existing weather-related VSL controllers are limited to adapt to the dynamic traffic environment. This study developed optimal VSL control strategy under fog conditions with fully consideration of factors that affect traffic safety risks. The crash risk under fog conditions was estimated using a crash risk prediction model based on Bayesian logistic regression. The traffic flow with VSL control was simulated by a modified cell transmission model (MCTM). The optimal factors of VSL control were obtained by solving an optimization problem that coordinated safety and mobility with the help of the genetic algorithm. An example of I-405 in California, USA was designed to simulate and evaluate the effects of the proposed VSL control strategy. The optimal VSL control factors under fog conditions were compared with sunny conditions, and different placements of VSL signs were evaluated. Results showed that the optimal VSL control strategy under fog conditions changed the speed limit more cautiously. The VSL control under fog conditions in this study effectively reduced crash risks without significantly increasing travel time, which is up to 37.15% reduction of risks and only 0.48% increase of total travel time. The proposed VSL control strategy is expected to be of great use in the development of VSL systems to enhance freeway safety under fog conditions.

Adversarial Code Learning for Image Generation

We introduce the "adversarial code learning" (ACL) module that improves overall image generation performance to several types of deep models. Instead of performing a posterior distribution modeling in the pixel spaces of generators, ACLs aim to jointly learn a latent code with another image encoder/inference net, with a prior noise as its input. We conduct the learning in an adversarial learning process, which bears a close resemblance to the original GAN but again shifts the learning from image spaces to prior and latent code spaces. ACL is a portable module that brings up much more flexibility and possibilities in generative model designs. First, it allows flexibility to convert non-generative models like Autoencoders and standard classification models to decent generative models. Second, it enhances existing GANs' performance by generating meaningful codes and images from any part of the prior. We have incorporated our ACL module with the aforementioned frameworks and have performed experiments on synthetic, MNIST, CIFAR-10, and CelebA datasets. Our models have achieved significant improvements which demonstrated the generality for image generation tasks.

Observation of orbital ordering and origin of the nematic order in FeSe

To elucidate the origin of nematic order in FeSe, we performed field-dependent 77Se-NMR measurements on single crystals of FeSe. We observed orbital ordering from the splitting of the NMR spectra and Knight shift and a suppression of it with magnetic field B0 up to 16 T applied parallel to the Fe-planes. There is a significant change in the distribution and magnitude of the internal magnetic field across the orbital ordering temperature Torb while stripe-type antiferromagnetism is absent. Giant antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations measured by the NMR spin-lattice relaxation are gradually developed starting at ~ 40 K, which is far below the nematic ordering temperature Tnem. These results demonstrate that orbital ordering is the origin of the nematic order, and the AFM spin fluctuation is the driving mechanism of superconductivity in FeSe under the presence of the nematic order.

In this paper, we introduce attribute-aware fashion-editing, a novel task, to the fashion domain. We re-define the overall objectives in AttGAN and propose the Fashion-AttGAN model for this new task. A dataset is constructed for this task with 14,221 and 22 attributes, which has been made publically available. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our Fashion-AttGAN on fashion editing over the original AttGAN.

Probing Carrier Transport and Structure-property Relationship of Highly Ordered Organic Semiconductors at Two-dimensional Limit

One of the basic assumptions in organic field-effect transistors, the most fundamental device unit in organic electronics, is that charge transport occurs two-dimensionally in the first few molecular layers near the dielectric interface. Although the mobility of bulk organic semiconductors has increased dramatically, direct probing of intrinsic charge transport in the two-dimensional limit has not been possible due to excessive disorders and traps in ultrathin organic thin films. Here, highly ordered mono- to tetra-layer pentacene crystals are realized by van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy on hexagonal BN. We find that the charge transport is dominated by hopping in the first conductive layer, but transforms to band-like in subsequent layers. Such abrupt phase transition is attributed to strong modulation of the molecular packing by interfacial vdW interactions, as corroborated by quantitative structural characterization and density functional theory calculations. The structural modulation becomes negligible beyond the second conductive layer, leading to a mobility saturation thickness of only ~3nm. Highly ordered organic ultrathin films provide a platform for new physics and device structures (such as heterostructures and quantum wells) that are not possible in conventional bulk crystals.

A van der Waals pn heterojunction with organic/inorganic semiconductors

van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions formed by two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent electrical/optical properties and device applications. However, current 2D heterojunctions are largely limited to atomic crystals, and hybrid organic/inorganic structures are rarely explored. Here, we fabricate hybrid 2D heterostructures with p-type dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene (C8-BTBT) and n-type MoS2. We find that few-layer C8-BTBT molecular crystals can be grown on monolayer MoS2 by vdW epitaxy, with pristine interface and controllable thickness down to monolayer. The operation of the C8-BTBT/MoS2 vertical heterojunction devices is highly tunable by bias and gate voltages between three different regimes: interfacial recombination, tunneling and blocking. The pn junction shows diode-like behavior with rectifying ratio up to 105 at the room temperature. Our devices also exhibit photovoltaic responses with power conversion efficiency of 0.31% and photoresponsivity of 22mA/W. With wide material combinations, such hybrid 2D structures will offer possibilities for opto-electronic devices that are not possible from individual constituents.

Investigation of the magnetic dipole field at the atomic scale in quasi-one-dimensional paramagnetic conductor Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_{6}$O$_{17}$

We report magnetic dipole field investigation at the atomic scale in a single crystal of quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) paramagnetic conductor Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_{6}$O$_{17}$, using a paramagnetic electron model and $^{7}$Li-NMR spectroscopy measurements with an externally applied magnetic field $B_{0}$ = 9 T. We find that the magnetic dipole field component ($B_{||}^{\text{dip}}$) parallel to $B_{0}$ at the Li site from the Mo electrons has no lattice axial symmetry; it is small around the middle between the lattice $c$ and $a$ axes in the $ac$-plane with the minimum at the field orientation angle $θ$ = +52.5$^{\circ}$, while the $B_{||}^{\text{dip}}$ maximum is at $θ$ = +142.5$^{\circ}$ when $B_{0}$ is applied perpendicular to $b$ ($B_{0}$ $\perp$ $b$), where $θ$ = 0$^{\circ}$ represents the direction of $B_{0}$ $\parallel$ $c$. Further estimate indicates that $B_{||}^{\text{dip}}$ has a maximum value of 0.35 G at $B_{0}$ = 9 T, and the Mo ions have a possible effective magnetic dipole moment 0.015 $μ_{\text{B}}$ per ion, which is significantly smaller than that of a spin 1/2 free electron. By minimizing potential magnetic contributions to the NMR spectrum satellites with the NMR spectroscopy measurements at the direction where the value of the magnetic dipole field is the smallest, the behavior of the independent charge contributions is observed. This work demonstrates that the magnetic dipole field from the Mo electrons is the dominant source of the local magnetic fields at the Li site, and it suggests that the mysterious "metal-insulator" crossover at low temperatures is not a charge effect. The work also reveals valuable local field information for further NMR investigation which is suggested recently [Phys. Rev. B $\bf{85}$, 235128 (2012)] to be key important to the understanding of many mysterious properties of this Q1D material of particular interest.

Unveiling the Structural Origin of the High Carrier Mobility of a Molecular Monolayer on Boron Nitride

Very recently, it was demonstrated that the carrier mobility of a molecular monolayer dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene (C8-BTBT) on boron nitride can reach 10 cm2/Vs, the highest among the previously reported monolayer molecular field-effect transistors. Here we show that the high-quality single crystal of the C8-BTBT monolayer may be the key origin of the record-high carrier mobility. We discover that the C8-BTBT molecules prefer layer-by-layer growth on both hexagonal boron nitride and graphene. The flatness of these substrates substantially decreases the C8-BTBT nucleation density and enables repeatable growth of large-area single crystal of the C8-BTBT monolayer. Our experimental result indicates that only out-of-plane roughness greater than 0.6 nm of the substrates could induce disturbance in the crystal growth and consequently affect the charge transport. This information would be important in guiding the growth of high-quality epitaxy molecular film.

Superconducting anisotropy in the electron-doped high-T$_{c}$ superconductors Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-y}$

We report superconducting anisotropy measurements in the electron-doped high-$T_{c}$ superconductors (HTSCs) Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-y}$ (PCCO, $x$ = 0.15 and 0.17) with applied magnetic field ($H_{0}$) up to 28 T. Our results show that the upper critical field [$H_{c2}(T)$] is highly anisotropic, and as temperature $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0 the value of it at $H_{0}$ $\parallel$ $c$ [$H_{c2,\parallel c}$(0)] is far less than the Pauli limit, which is very different from that at $H_{0}$ $\perp$ $c$. The $H_{c2}(0)$ character along with the evaluated zero $T$ coherence length $[ξ_{ab(c)}(0)]$ and penetration depth $[λ_{ab(c)}(0)]$ is compared with those of the hole-doped cuprate HTSCs and typical Fe-based superconductors. We find that the low temperature anisotropic character of PCCO is rather similar to that of hole-doped cuprate HTSCs, but apparently larger than that of typical Fe-based superconductors. This study also proves a new sensitive probe of detecting rich properties of unconventional superconductors with the use of the resonant frequency of a NMR probe circuit.
