A Model of Fast Radio Bursts: Collisions Between Episodic Magnetic Blobs

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright radio pulses from the sky with millisecond durations and Jansky-level flux densities. Their origins are still largely uncertain. Here we suggest a new model for FRBs. We argue that the collision of a white dwarf with a black hole can give birth to a transient accretion disk, from which powerful episodic magnetic blobs will be launched. The collision between two consecutive magnetic blobs can result in a catastrophic magnetic reconnection, which releases a large amount of free magnetic energy and forms a forward shock. The shock propagates through the cold magnetized plasma within the blob in the collision region, radiating through synchrotron maser mechanism, which is responsible for a non-repeating FRB signal. Our calculations show that the theoretical energetics, radiation frequency, duration timescale, and event rate can be well consistent with the observational characteristic of FRBs.

Automatic Detection of Public Development Projects in Large Open Source Ecosystems: An Exploratory Study on GitHub

Hosting over 10 million of software projects, GitHub is one of the most important data sources to study behavior of developers and software projects. However, with the increase of the size of open source datasets, the potential threats to mining these datasets have also grown. As the dataset grows, it becomes gradually unrealistic for human to confirm quality of all samples. Some studies have investigated this problem and provided solutions to avoid threats in sample selection, but some of these solutions (e.g., finding development projects) require human intervention. When the amount of data to be processed increases, these semi-automatic solutions become less useful since the effort in need for human intervention is far beyond affordable. To solve this problem, we investigated the GHTorrent dataset and proposed a method to detect public development projects. The results show that our method can effectively improve the sample selection process in two ways: (1) We provide a simple model to automatically select samples (with 0.827 precision and 0.947 recall); (2) We also offer a complex model to help researchers carefully screen samples (with 63.2% less effort than manually confirming all samples, and can achieve 0.926 precision and 0.959 recall).

Continued Brightening of the Afterglow of GW170817/GRB 170817A as due to a Delayed Energy Injection

The brightness of the multi-wavelength afterglow of GRB 170817A is increasing unexpectedly even $\sim$ 160 days after the associated gravitational burst. Here we suggest that the brightening can be caused by a late-time energy injection process. We use an empirical expression to mimic the evolution of the injection luminosity, which is consisted of a power-law rising phase and a power-law decreasing phase. It is found that the power-law indices of the two phases are $0.92$ and $-2.8$, respectively, with the peak time of the injection being $\sim 110$ days. The energy injection could be due to some kind of accretion, with the total accreted mass being $\sim 0.006 M_\odot$. However, normal fall-back accretion, which usually lasts for a much shorter period, cannot provide a natural explanation. Our best-fit decaying index of $-2.8$ is also at odds with the expected value of $-5/3$ for normal fall-back accretion. Noting that the expansion velocities of the kilonova components associated with GW170817 is $0.1-0.3\,c$, we argue that there should also be some ejecta with correspondingly lower velocities during the coalescence of the double neutron star system. They are bound by the gravitational well of the remnant central compact object and might be accreted at a timescale of about 100 days, providing a reasonable explanation for the energy injection. Detailed studies on the long-lasting brightening of GRB 170817A thus may provide useful information on the matter ejection during the merger process of binary neutron stars.

Instability of the solitary wave solutions for the generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the endpoint case

We consider the stability theory of solitary wave solutions for the generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ i\partial_{t}u+\partial_{x}^{2}u+i|u|^{2σ}\partial_x u=0, $$ where $1<σ<2$. The equation has a two-parameter family of solitary wave solutions of the form $$ u_{ω,c}(t,x)=e^{iωt+i\frac c2(x-ct)-\frac{i}{2σ+2}\int_{-\infty}^{x-ct}φ^{2σ}_{ω,c}(y)dy}φ_{ω,c}(x-ct). $$ The stability theory in the frequency region of $|c|<2\sqrtω$ was studied previously. In this paper, we prove the instability of the solitary wave solutions in the endpoint case $c=2\sqrtω$.

Distinct pressure evolution of coupled nematic and magnetic order in FeSe

FeSe, despite being the structurally simplest compound in the family of iron-based superconductors, shows an astoundingly rich interplay of physical phenomena including nematicity and pressure-induced magnetism. Here, we present a microscopic study of these two phenomena by high-energy x-ray diffraction and time-domain Mössbauer spectroscopy on FeSe single crystals over a wide temperature and pressure range. The topology of the pressure-temperature phase diagram is a surprisingly close parallel to the well-known doping-temperature phase diagram of BaFe2As2 generated through partial Fe/Co and Ba/Na substitution. In FeSe with pressure p as a control parameter, the magneto-structural ground state can be tuned from "pure" nematic - paramagnetic with an orthorhombic lattice distortion - through a strongly coupled magnetically ordered and orthorhombic state to a magnetically ordered state without an orthorhombic lattice distortion. The magnetic hyperfine field increases monotonically over a wide pressure range. However, the orthorhombic distortion initially decreases under increasing pressure, but is stabilized by cooperative coupling to the pressure-induced magnetic order. Close to the reported maximum of the superconducting critical temperature Tc (occuring at p = 6.8 GPa), the orthorhombic distortion suddenly disappears and FeSe remains tetragonal down to the lowest temperature measured. Analysis of the structural and magnetic order parameters suggests an independent origin of the structural and magnetic ordering phenomena, and their cooperative coupling leads to the similarity with the canonical phase diagram of iron pnictides.

Wrong Sign Bottom Yukawa in Low Energy Supersymmetry

The study of the Higgs boson properties is one of the most relevant activities in current particle physics. In particular, the Higgs boson couplings to third generation fermions is an important test of the mechanism of mass generation. In spite of their impact on the production and decay properties of the Higgs boson, the values of these couplings are still uncertain and, in models of new physics, they can differ in magnitude as well as in sign with respect to the Standard Model case. In this article, we study the possibility of a wrong sign bottom-quark Yukawa coupling within the framework of the Minimal and Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Possible experimental tests are also discussed, including novel decays of the heavy CP-even and CP-odd Higgs fields that may be probed in the near future and that may lead to an explanation of some intriguing di-boson signatures observed at the ATLAS experiment.

Brightening X-ray/Optical/Radio Emission of GW170817/SGRB 170817A: Results of an Electron-Positron Wind from the Central Engine?

Recent follow-up observations of the binary neutron star (NS) merging event GW170817/SGRB 170817A reveal that its X-ray/optical/radio emissions are brightening continuously up to $\sim 100$ days post-merger. This late-time brightening is unexpected from the kilonova model or the off-axis top-hat jet model for gamma-ray burst afterglows. In this paper, by assuming that the merger remnant is a long-lived NS, we propose that the interaction between an electron-positron-pair ($e^+e^-$) wind from the central NS and the jet could produce a long-lived reverse shock, from which a new emission component would rise and can interpret current observations well. The magnetic-field-induced ellipticity of the NS is taken to be $4 \times 10^{-5}$ in our modeling, so that the braking of the NS is mainly through the gravitational wave (GW) radiation rather than the magnetic dipole radiation, and the emission luminosity at early times would not exceed the observational limits. In our scenario, since the peak time of the brightening is roughly equal to the spin-down time scale of the NS, the accurate peak time may help constrain the ellipticity of the remnant NS. We suggest that radio polarization observations of the brightening would help to distinguish our scenario from other scenarios. Future observations on a large sample of short gamma-ray burst afterglows or detections of GW signals from merger remnants would test our scenario.

Programming Requests/Responses with GreatFree in the Cloud Environment

Programming request with GreatFree is an efficient programming technique to implement distributed polling in the cloud computing environment. GreatFree is a distributed programming environment through which diverse distributed systems can be established through programming rather than configuring or scripting. GreatFree emphasizes the importance of programming since it offers developers the opportunities to leverage their distributed knowledge and programming skills. Additionally, programming is the unique way to construct creative, adaptive and flexible systems to accommodate various distributed computing environments. With the support of GreatFree code-level Distributed Infrastructure Patterns, Distributed Operation Patterns and APIs, the difficult procedure is accomplished in a programmable, rapid and highly-patterned manner, i.e., the programming behaviors are simplified as the repeatable operation of Copy-Paste-Replace. Since distributed polling is one of the fundamental techniques to construct distributed systems, GreatFree provides developers with relevant APIs and patterns to program requests/responses in the novel programming environment.

Spin Quenching Assisted by a Strongly Anisotropic Compression Behavior in MnP

We studied the crystal structure and spin state of MnP under high pressure with synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray emission spectroscopy. MnP has an exceedingly strong anisotropy in compressibility, with the primary compressible direction along the b axis of the Pnma structure. X-ray emission spectroscopy reveals a pressure-driven quenching of the spin state in MnP. Firstprinciples calculations suggest that the strongly anisotropic compression behavior significantly enhances the dispersion of the Mn d-orbitals and the splitting of the d orbital levels compared to the hypothetical isotropic compression behavior. Thus, we propose spin quenching results mainly from the significant enhancement of the itinerancy of d electrons and partly from spin rearrangement occurring in the split d-orbital levels near the Fermi level. This explains the fast suppression of magnetic ordering in MnP under high pressure. The spin quenching lags behind the occurrence of superconductivity at ~8 GPa implying that spin fluctuations govern the electron pairing for superconductivity.

Independent component analysis for multivariate functional data

We extend two methods of independent component analysis, fourth order blind identification and joint approximate diagonalization of eigen-matrices, to vector-valued functional data. Multivariate functional data occur naturally and frequently in modern applications, and extending independent component analysis to this setting allows us to distill important information from this type of data, going a step further than the functional principal component analysis. To allow the inversion of the covariance operator we make the assumption that the dependency between the component functions lies in a finite-dimensional subspace. In this subspace we define fourth cross-cumulant operators and use them to construct the two novel, Fisher consistent methods for solving the independent component problem for vector-valued functions. Both simulations and an application on a hand gesture data set show the usefulness and advantages of the proposed methods over functional principal component analysis.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

On the density of intermediate β-shifts of finite type

We determine the structure of the set of intermediate $β$-shifts of finite type. Specifically, we show that this set is dense in the parameter space $Δ= \{ (β, α) \in \mathbb{R}^{2} \colon β\in (1, 2) \; \text{and} \; 0 \leq α\leq 2 - β\}$. This generalises the classical result of Parry from 1960 for greedy and (normalised) lazy $β$-shifts.

Independent component analysis for tensor-valued data

In preprocessing tensor-valued data, e.g. images and videos, a common procedure is to vectorize the observations and subject the resulting vectors to one of the many methods used for independent component analysis (ICA). However, the tensor structure of the original data is lost in the vectorization and, as a more suitable alternative, we propose the matrix- and tensor fourth order blind identification (MFOBI and TFOBI). In these tensorial extensions of the classic fourth order blind identification (FOBI) we assume a Kronecker structure for the mixing and perform FOBI simultaneously on each direction of the observed tensors. We discuss the theory and assumptions behind MFOBI and TFOBI and provide two different algorithms and related estimates of the unmixing matrices along with their asymptotic properties. Finally, simulations are used to compare the method's performance with that of classical FOBI for vectorized data and we end with a real data clustering example.

Testing Microfluidic Fully Programmable Valve Arrays (FPVAs)

Fully Programmable Valve Array (FPVA) has emerged as a new architecture for the next-generation flow-based microfluidic biochips. This 2D-array consists of regularly-arranged valves, which can be dynamically configured by users to realize microfluidic devices of different shapes and sizes as well as interconnections. Additionally, the regularity of the underlying structure renders FPVAs easier to integrate on a tiny chip. However, these arrays may suffer from various manufacturing defects such as blockage and leakage in control and flow channels. Unfortunately, no efficient method is yet known for testing such a general-purpose architecture. In this paper, we present a novel formulation using the concept of flow paths and cut-sets, and describe an ILP-based hierarchical strategy for generating compact test sets that can detect multiple faults in FPVAs. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in detecting manufacturing faults with only a small number of test vectors.

Transport or Store? Synthesizing Flow-based Microfluidic Biochips using Distributed Channel Storage

Flow-based microfluidic biochips have attracted much atten- tion in the EDA community due to their miniaturized size and execution efficiency. Previous research, however, still follows the traditional computing model with a dedicated storage unit, which actually becomes a bottleneck of the performance of bio- chips. In this paper, we propose the first architectural synthe- sis framework considering distributed storage constructed tem- porarily from transportation channels to cache fluid samples. Since distributed storage can be accessed more efficiently than a dedicated storage unit and channels can switch between the roles of transportation and storage easily, biochips with this dis- tributed computing architecture can achieve a higher execution efficiency even with fewer resources. Experimental results con- firm that the execution efficiency of a bioassay can be improved by up to 28% while the number of valves in the biochip can be reduced effectively.

On Hierarchical Statistical Static Timing Analysis

Statistical static timing analysis deals with the increasing variations in manufacturing processes to reduce the pessimism in the worst case timing analysis. Because of the correlation between delays of circuit components, timing model generation and hierarchical timing analysis face more challenges than in static timing analysis. In this paper, a novel method to generate timing models for combinational circuits considering variations is proposed. The resulting timing models have accurate input-output delays and are about 80% smaller than the original circuits. Additionally, an accurate hierarchical timing analysis method at design level using pre-characterized timing models is proposed. This method incorporates the correlation between modules by replacing independent random variables to improve timing accuracy. Experimental results show that the correlation between modules strongly affects the delay distribution of the hierarchical design and the proposed method has good accuracy compared with Monte Carlo simulation, but is faster by three orders of magnitude.

Fast Statistical Timing Analysis for Circuits with Post-Silicon Tunable Clock Buffers

Post-Silicon Tunable (PST) clock buffers are widely used in high performance designs to counter process variations. By allowing delay compensation between consecutive register stages, PST buffers can effectively improve the yield of digital circuits. To date, the evaluation of manufacturing yield in the presence of PST buffers is only possible using Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we propose an alternative method based on graph transformations, which is much faster, more than 1000 times, and computes a parametric minimum clock period. It also identifies the gates which are most critical to the circuit performance, therefore enabling a fast analysis-optimization flow.
