Thermodynamics curvature in phase transitions for AdS black hole

We investigate the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition and the second-order phase transition of the AdS black hole. It is shown that the thermodynamic curvature has the same behavior in these two different phase transitions. Specifically, the thermodynamic curvature in the Hawking-Page phase transition is the power function of the Hawking-Page phase transition temperature with exponent related to the spacetime dimension, or is invariably proportional to the reciprocal of the Hawking-Page phase transition entropy. For the thermodynamic curvature in the second-order phase transition, the conclusion is similar. The more enlightening result is that the ratio of thermodynamic curvatures along the two different phase transitions tends to the natural constant in the limit that the number of spacetime dimensions is infinite. The universal and novel result provides an essential difference between the Hawking-Page phase transition and the second-order phase transition of the AdS black hole in the large dimension paradigm.

van der Waals fluid and charged AdS black hole in the Landau theory

By introducing the general construction of Landau functional of the van der Waals system and charged AdS black hole system, we have preliminarily realized the Landau continuous phase transition theory in black hole thermodynamics. The results show that the Landau functional constructed in present paper can directly reflect the physical process of black hole phase transition. Specifically, the splitting of the global minimum of the Landau functional corresponds to the second-order phase transition of the black hole, and the transformation of the global minimum reflects the first-order phase transition of the black hole.

A shell of Bosons in Spherically Symmetric spacetimes

The thermodynamic properties of a shell of bosons with the inner surface locating at Planck length away from the horizon of Schwarzschild black holes by using statistical mechanics are studied. The covariant partition function of bosons is obtained, from which the Bose-Einstein condensation of bosons is found at a non-zero temperature in the curved spacetimes. As a special case of bosons, we analyze the entropy of photon gas near the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole, which shows an area dependence similar to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The results may offer new perspectives on the study of black hole thermodynamics. All these are extended to the $D+1$ dimensional spherically symmetric static spacetimes.

Ruppeiner geometry and thermodynamic phase transition of the black hole in massive gravity

The phase transition and thermodynamic geometry of a 4-dimensional AdS topological charged black hole in de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity have been studied. After introducing a normalized thermodynamic scalar curvature, it is speculated that its value is related to the interaction between the underlying black hole molecules if the black hole molecules exist. We show that there does exist a crucial parameter given in terms of the topology, charge, and massive parameters of the black hole, which characterizes the thermodynamic properties of the black hole. It is found that when the parameter is positive, the singlet large black hole phase does not exist for sufficient low temperature and there is a weak repulsive interaction dominating for the small black hole which is similar to the Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole; when the parameter is negative, an additional phase region describing large black holes also implies a dominant repulsive interaction. These constitute the distinguishable features of dRGT massive topological black hole from those of the Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole as well as the Van der Waals fluid system.

Payoff Control in Repeated Games

Evolutionary game theory is a powerful mathematical framework to study how intelligent individuals adjust their strategies in collective interactions. It has been widely believed that it is impossible to unilaterally control players' payoffs in games, since payoffs are jointly determined by all players. Until recently, a class of so-called zero-determinant strategies are revealed, which enables a player to make a unilateral payoff control over her partners in two-action repeated games with a constant continuation probability. The existing methods, however, lead to the curse of dimensionality when the complexity of games increases. In this paper, we propose a new mathematical framework to study ruling strategies (with which a player unilaterally makes a linear relation rule on players' payoffs) in repeated games with an arbitrary number of actions or players, and arbitrary continuation probability. We establish an existence theorem of ruling strategies and develop an algorithm to find them. In particular, we prove that strict Markov ruling strategy exists only if either the repeated game proceeds for an infinite number of rounds, or every round is repeated with the same probability. The proposed mathematical framework also enables the search of collaborative ruling strategies for an alliance to control outsiders. Our method provides novel theoretical insights into payoff control in complex repeated games, which overcomes the curse of dimensionality.

On guided circumferential waves in soft electroactive tubes under radially inhomogeneous biasing fields

In this paper, we present an analysis of the guided circumferential elastic waves in soft EA tube actuators, which has potential applications in the in-situ non-destructive evaluation or online structural health monitoring (SHM) to detect structural defects or fatigue cracks in soft EA tube actuators and in the self-sensing of soft EA tube actuators based on the concept of guided circumferential elastic waves. Both circumferential SH and Lamb-type waves in an incompressible soft EA cylindrical tube under inhomogeneous biasing fields are considered. The biasing fields, induced by the application of an electric voltage difference to the electrodes on the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces of the EA tube in addition to an axial pre-stretch, are inhomogeneous in the radial direction. Dorfmann and Ogden's theory of nonlinear electroelasticity and the associated linear theory for small incremental motion constitute the basis of our analysis. By means of the state-space formalism for the incremental wave motion along with the approximate laminate technique, dispersion relations are derived in a particularly efficient way. For a neo-Hookean ideal dielectric model, the proposed approach is first validated numerically. Numerical examples are then given to show that the guided circumferential wave propagation characteristics are significantly affected by the inhomogeneous biasing fields and the geometrical parameters. Some particular phenomena such as the frequency veering and the nonlinear dependence of the phase velocity on the radial electric voltage are discussed. Our numerical findings demonstrate that it is feasible to use guided circumferential elastic waves for the ultrasonic non-destructive online SHM to detect interior structural defects or fatigue cracks and for the self-sensing of the actual state of the soft EA tube actuator.

Surface effects on anti-plane shear waves propagating in magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates

Material surface may have a remarkable effect on the mechanical behavior of magneto-electro-elastic (or multiferroic) structures at nano-scale. In this paper, a surface magneto-electro-elasticity theory (or effective boundary condition formulation), which governs the motion of the material surface of magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates, is established by employing the state-space formalism. The properties of anti-plane shear (SH) waves propagating in a transversely isotropic magneto-electro-elastic plate with nano-thickness are investigated by taking surface effects into account. The size-dependent dispersion relations of both antisymmetric and symmetric SH waves are presented. The thickness-shear frequencies and the asymptotic characteristics of the dispersion relations considering surface effects are determined analytically as well. Numerical results show that surface effects play a very pronounced role in elastic wave propagation in magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates, and the dispersion properties depend strongly on the chosen surface material parameters of magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates. As a consequence, it is possible to modulate the waves in magneto-electro-elastic nano-plates through surface engineering.

On free vibration of piezoelectric nanospheres with surface effect

Surface effect responsible for some size-dependent characteristics can become distinctly important for piezoelectric nanomaterials with inherent large surface-to-volume ratio. In this paper, we investigate the surface effect on the free vibration behavior of a spherically isotropic piezoelectric nanosphere. Instead of directly using the well-known Huang-Yu surface piezoelectricity theory (HY theory), another general framework based on a thin shell layer model is proposed. A novel approach is developed to establish the surface piezoelectricity theory or the effective boundary conditions for piezoelectric nanospheres employing the state-space formalism. Three different sources of surface effect can be identified in the first-order surface piezoelectricity, i.e. the electroelastic effect, the inertia effect, and the thickness effect. It is found that the proposed theory becomes identical to the HY theory for a spherical material boundary if the transverse stress (TS) components are discarded and the electromechanical properties are properly defined. The nonaxisymmetric free vibration of a piezoelectric nanosphere with surface effect is then studied and an exact solution is obtained. In order to investigate the surface effect on the natural frequencies of piezoelectric nanospheres, numerical calculations are finally performed. Our numerical findings demonstrate that the surface effect, especially the thickness effect, may have a particularly significant influence on the free vibration of piezoelectric nanospheres. This work provides a more accurate prediction of the dynamic characteristics of piezoelectric nanospherical devices in Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (NEMS).

Ruppeiner Geometry of the RN-AdS Black Hole Using Shadow Formalism

The connection between the shadow radius and the Ruppeiner geometry of a charged static spherically symmetric black hole is investigated. The normalized curvature scalar is adopted, and its close relation to the Van der Waals-like and Hawking-Page phase transition of Reissner-Nordström AdS black hole is studied. The results show that the shadow radius is a useful tool to reveal the correct information of the phase structure and the underlying microstructure of the black hole, which opens a new window to investigate the strong gravity system from the observational point of view.

Wrinkling of soft magneto-active plates

Coupled magneto-mechanical wrinkling has appeared in many scenarios of engineering and biology. Hence, soft magneto-active (SMA) plates buckle when subject to critical uniform magnetic field normal to their wide surface. Here, we provide a systematic analysis of the wrinkling of SMA plates subject to an in-plane mechanical load and a transverse magnetic field?. We consider two loading modes: plane-strain loading and uni-axial loading, and two models of magneto-sensitive plates: the neo-Hookean ideal magneto-elastic model and the neo-Hookean magnetization saturation Langevin model. Our analysis relies on the theory of nonlinear magneto-elasticity and the associated linearized theory for superimposed perturbations. We derive the Stroh formulation of the governing equations of wrinkling, and combine it with the surface impedance method to obtain explicitly the bifurcation equations identifying the onset of symmetric and antisymmetric wrinkles. We also obtain analytical expressions of instability in the thin- and thick-plate limits. For thin plates, we make the link with classical Euler buckling solutions. We also perform an exhaustive numerical analysis to elucidate the effects of loading mode, load amplitude, and saturation magnetization on the nonlinear static response and bifurcation diagrams. We find that antisymmetric wrinkling modes always occur before symmetric modes. Increasing the pre-compression or heightening the magnetic field has a destabilizing effect for SMA plates, while the saturation magnetization enhances their stability. We show that the Euler buckling solutions are a good approximation to the exact bifurcation curves for thin plates.

Effects of strain stiffening and electrostriction on tunable elastic waves in compressible dielectric elastomer laminates

This paper presents an electromechanical analysis of the nonlinear static response and the superimposed small-amplitude wave characteristics in an infinite periodic compressible dielectric elastomer (DE) laminate subjected to electrostatic excitations and prestress in the thickness direction. The enriched Gent material model is employed to account for the effects of strain stiffening and electrostriction of the DE laminate. The theory of nonlinear electroelasticity and related linearized incremental theory are exploited to derive the governing equations of nonlinear response and the dispersion relations of incremental shear and longitudinal waves. Numerical results reveal that the snap-through instability of a Gent DE laminate resulting from geometrical and material nonlinearities can be used to achieve a sharp transition in the position and width of wave band gaps. Furthermore, the influence of material properties (including Gent constants, the second strain invariant and electrostrictive parameters) and that of prestress on the snap-through instability and the electrostatic tunability of band gaps for both shear and longitudinal waves are discussed in detail. The electrostrictive effect and prestress are beneficial to stabilizing the periodic DE laminate. Depending on whether the snap-through instability occurs or not, a continuous variation or a sharp transition in wave band gaps can be realized by varying the electric stimuli. Our numerical findings are expected to provide a solid guidance for the design and manufacture of soft DE wave devices with tunable band structures.

Tuning Elastic Waves in Soft Phononic Crystal Cylinders via Large Deformation and Electromechanical Coupling

Soft electroactive materials can undergo large deformation subjected to either mechanical or electrical stimulus, and hence they can be excellent candidates for designing extremely flexible and adaptive structures and devices. This paper proposes a simple one-dimensional soft phononic crystal cylinder made of dielectric elastomer to show how large deformation and electric field can be used jointly to tune the longitudinal waves propagating in the PC. A series of soft electrodes are placed periodically along the dielectric elastomer cylinder, and hence the material can be regarded as uniform in the undeformed state. This is also the case for the uniformly pre-stretched state induced by a static axial force only. The effective periodicity of the structure is then achieved through two loading paths, i.e. by maintaining the longitudinal stretch and applying an electric voltage over any two neighbouring electrodes, or by holding the axial force and applying the voltage. All physical field variables for both configurations can be determined exactly based on the nonlinear theory of electroelasticity. An infinitesimal wave motion is further superimposed on the pre-deformed configurations and the corresponding dispersion equations are derived analytically by invoking the linearized theory for incremental motions. Numerical examples are finally considered to show the tunability of wave propagation behavior in the soft PC cylinder. The outstanding performance regarding the band gap (BG) property of the proposed soft dielectric PC is clearly demonstrated by comparing with the conventional design adopting the hard piezoelectric material. Note that soft dielectric PCs are susceptible to various kinds of failure (buckling, electromechanical instability, electric breakdown, etc.), imposing corresponding limits on the external stimuli.

Electrostatically tunable small-amplitude free vibrations of pressurized electro-active spherical balloons

Designing tunable resonators is of practical importance in active/adaptive sound generation, noise control, vibration isolation and damping. In this paper, we propose to exploit the biasing fields (induced by internal pressure and radial electric voltage) to tune the three-dimensional and small-amplitude free vibration of a thick-walled soft electro-active (SEA) spherical balloon. The incompressible isotropic SEA balloon is characterized by both neo-Hookean and Gent ideal dielectric models. The equations governing small-amplitude vibrations under inhomogeneous biasing fields can be linearized and solved in spherical coordinates using the state-space formalism, which establishes two separate transfer relations correlating the state vectors at the inner surface with those at the outer surface of the SEA balloon. By imposing the mechanical and electric boundary conditions, two separate analytical frequency equations are derived, which characterize two independent classes of vibration for torsional and spheroidal modes, respectively. Numerical examples are finally conducted to validate the theoretical derivation as well as to investigate the effects of both radial electric voltage and internal pressure on the resonant frequency of the SEA balloon. The reported analytical solution is truly and fully three-dimensional, covering from the purely radial breathing mode to torsional mode to any general spheroidal mode, and hence provides a more accurate prediction of the vibration characteristics of tunable resonant devices that incorporate the SEA spherical balloon as the tuning element.

On propagation of axisymmetric waves in pressurized functionally graded elastomeric hollow cylinders

Soft materials can be designed with a functionally graded (FG) property for specific applications. In this paper, we analyze the axisymmetric guided wave propagation in a pressurized FG elastomeric hollow cylinder. The cylinder is subjected to a combined action of axial pre-stretch and pressure difference applied to the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces. We consider both torsional waves and longitudinal waves propagating in the FG cylinder made of incompressible isotropic elastomer, which is characterized by the Mooney-Rivlin strain energy function but with the material parameters varying with the radial coordinate in an affine way. The pressure difference generates an inhomogeneous deformation field in the FG cylinder, which dramatically complicates the superimposed wave problem described by the small-on-large theory. A particularly efficient approach is hence employed which combines the state-space formalism for the incremental wave motion with the approximate laminate or multi-layer technique. Dispersion relations for the two types of axisymmetric guided waves are then derived analytically. The accuracy and convergence of the proposed approach is validated numerically. The effects of the pressure difference, material gradient, and axial pre-stretch on both the torsional and the longitudinal wave propagation characteristics are discussed in detail through numerical examples. It is found that the frequency of axisymmetric waves depends nonlinearly on the pressure difference and the material gradient, and an increase in the material gradient enhances the capability of the pressure difference to adjust the wave behavior in the FG cylinder.

Low-frequency tunable topological interface states in soft phononic crystal cylinders

Topological phononic crystals have attracted intensive attention due to their peculiar topologically protected interface or edge states. Their operating frequency, however, is generally fixed once designed and fabricated. Here, we propose to overcome this limitation by utilizing soft topological phononic crystals. In particular, we design a simple one-dimensional periodic system of soft cylindrical waveguides to realize mechanically tunable topological interface states for longitudinal waves. To this end, we employ the nonlinear elasticity theory and its linearized incremental version to fully account for both geometric and material nonlinearities of the system. We derive the dispersion relation for small-amplitude longitudinal motions superimposed on the finitely deformed state. In addition, our analytical results provide information about the corresponding Bloch wave modes, displacement field distributions, and signal transmission coefficients for finite cylindrical waveguides with identical or various unit-cell topologies. Our numerical results illustrate the low-frequency topological interface state occurring at the interface between two topologically distinct soft phononic cylinders. Moreover, we show that the corresponding frequency in the overlapped band gap can be continuously adjusted by an external force. This analytical result is also validated by the finite element simulations. Finally, we provide the topological phase diagrams to demonstrate the tunable position and existence condition of the topological interface states when tuning the external loading. The low-frequency tunable topological interface states with remarkable field enhancement may find a wide range of potential applications such as tunable energy harvesters, low-pass filters and high-sensitivity detectors for biomedical applications.

Factorization and transverse phase-space parton distributions

We first revisit impact-parameter dependent collisions of ultra-relativistic particles in quantum field theory. Two conditions sufficient for defining an impact-parameter dependent cross section are given, which could be violated in proton-proton collisions. By imposing these conditions, a general formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section is derived. Then, using soft-collinear effective theory, we derive a factorization formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section for inclusive hard processes with only colorless final-state products in hadron and nuclear collisions. It entails defining thickness beam functions, which are Fourier transforms of transverse phase-space parton distribution functions. By modelling non-perturbative modes in thickness beam functions of large nuclei in heavy-ion collisions, the factorization formula confirms the cross section in the Glauber model for hard processes. Besides, the factorization formula is verified up to one loop in perturbative QCD for the inclusive Drell-Yan process in quark-antiquark collisions at a finite impact parameter.

Relation-aware Hierarchical Attention Framework for Video Question Answering

Video Question Answering (VideoQA) is a challenging video understanding task since it requires a deep understanding of both question and video. Previous studies mainly focus on extracting sophisticated visual and language embeddings, fusing them by delicate hand-crafted networks. However, the relevance of different frames, objects, and modalities to the question are varied along with the time, which is ignored in most of existing methods. Lacking understanding of the the dynamic relationships and interactions among objects brings a great challenge to VideoQA task. To address this problem, we propose a novel Relation-aware Hierarchical Attention (RHA) framework to learn both the static and dynamic relations of the objects in videos. In particular, videos and questions are embedded by pre-trained models firstly to obtain the visual and textual features. Then a graph-based relation encoder is utilized to extract the static relationship between visual objects. To capture the dynamic changes of multimodal objects in different video frames, we consider the temporal, spatial, and semantic relations, and fuse the multimodal features by hierarchical attention mechanism to predict the answer. We conduct extensive experiments on a large scale VideoQA dataset, and the experimental results demonstrate that our RHA outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Coherence Scaling of Noisy Second-Order Scale-Free Consensus Networks

A striking discovery in the field of network science is that the majority of real networked systems have some universal structural properties. In generally, they are simultaneously sparse, scale-free, small-world, and loopy. In this paper, we investigate the second-order consensus of dynamic networks with such universal structures subject to white noise at vertices. We focus on the network coherence $H_{\rm SO}$ characterized in terms of the $\mathcal{H}_2$-norm of the vertex systems, which measures the mean deviation of vertex states from their average value. We first study numerically the coherence of some representative real-world networks. We find that their coherence $H_{\rm SO}$ scales sublinearly with the vertex number $N$. We then study analytically $H_{\rm SO}$ for a class of iteratively growing networks -- pseudofractal scale-free webs (PSFWs), and obtain an exact solution to $H_{\rm SO}$, which also increases sublinearly in $N$, with an exponent much smaller than 1. To explain the reasons for this sublinear behavior, we finally study $H_{\rm SO}$ for Sierpinśki gaskets, for which $H_{\rm SO}$ grows superlinearly in $N$, with a power exponent much larger than 1. Sierpinśki gaskets have the same number of vertices and edges as the PSFWs, but do not display the scale-free and small-world properties. We thus conclude that the scale-free and small-world, and loopy topologies are jointly responsible for the observed sublinear scaling of $H_{\rm SO}$.
