Single-crystal elastic moduli, anisotropy and the B1-B2 phase transition of NaCl at high pressures: Experiment vs. ab-initio calculations

Single-crystal elastic moduli, Cij, and the B1-B2 phase transition of NaCl were investigated experimentally, using time-domain Brillouin scattering (TDBS), and theoretically, via density-functional-theory (DFT), to 41 GPa. Thus, we largely extended pressure range where Cij and elastic anisotropy of the solid are measured, including the first experimental data for the high-pressure B2 phase, NaCl-B2. NaCl-B1 exhibits a strong and growing with pressure anisotropy, in contrast to NaCl-B2. Theoretical values obtained using different advanced DFT functionals were compared with our measurements but no one could satisfactorily reproduce our experimental data for NaCl-B1 and NaCl-B2 simultaneously. For all available DFT results on the principal shear moduli and anisotropy, the deviation became pronounced when the degree of compression increased significantly. Similar deviations could be also recognized for other cubic solids having the same B1-type structure and similar bonding, such as CaO, MgO, or (Mg1-x,Fex)O. Furthermore, the available experimental data suggest that the B1-B2 phase transition of NaCl and the above mentioned compounds are governed by the Born stability criterion C44(P) - P > 0.

Elastic and magnetoelastic properties of TbMnO3 single crystal by nanosecond time resolved acoustics and first-principles calculations

Time resolved pump and probe acoustics and first-principles calculations were employed to assess elastic properties of the TbMnO3 perovskite manganite having orthorhombic symmetry. Measuring sound velocities of bulk longitudinal and shear acoustic waves propagating along at least two different directions in the high symmetry planes (100), (010) and (001), provided a powerful mean to selectively determine the six diagonal elastic constants C11= 227 GPa, C22= 349 GPa, C33= 274 GPa, C44= 71 GPa, C55= 57 GPa, C66= 62 GPa. Among the three remaining off-diagonal ones, C23= 103 GPa was determined with a bissectrice direction. Density functional theory calculations with colinear spin-polarized provided complementary insights on their optical, elastic and magnetoelastic properties.

Elastic properties assessment in the multiferroic BiFeO3 by pump and probe method

We have performed elasticity measurements in the bulk multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) using acoustical pump and probe spectroscopy. The sound velocities of the (quasi)-longitudinal and of the two (quasi)-transverse acoustic waves along three independent directions of the (110) surface have been measured. Moreover, one surface wave and one longitudinal wave propagating perpendicular to the surface have been detected. Based on initial input values of the six independent Cij elastic constants determined by our density functional theory calculations and our eleven experimental velocities, the numerical resolution of the acoustic equations allows to determine all the Cij elastic constants of BFO. The propagation direction dependence of volume and surface waves phase velocities allows the unambiguously assignment of the waves, hence the polarization of phonons.

High spectral resolution of GaAs/AlAs phononic cavities by subharmonic resonant pump-probe excitation

We present here precise measurement of the resonance frequency, lifetime and shape of confined acoustic modes in the tens of GHz regime in GaAs/AlAs superlattice planar and micropillar cavities at low temperature ($\sim 20\,\textrm{K}$). The subharmonic resonant pump-probe technique, where the repetition rate of the pump laser is tuned to a subharmonic of the cavity resonance to maximize the amplitude of the acoustic resonance, in combination with a Sagnac interferometer technique for high sensitivity ($\sim 10 \,\textrm{fm}$) to the surface displacement, has been used. The cavity fundamental mode at $\sim 20\,\textrm{GHz}$ and the higher order cavity harmonics up to $\sim 180\,\textrm{GHz}$ have been clearly resolved. Mechanical Q-values up to $2.7 \times 10^4$ have been measured in a planar superlattice, and direct spatial mapping of confined acoustic modes in a superlattice cavity micropillar has been demonstrated. The Q-frequency product obtained is $ \sim 5 \times 10^{14}$ demonstrating the suitability of these superlattice cavities for optomechanical applications.

Breakdown of Herring's processes in cubic semiconductors for sub-terahertz longitudinal acoustic phonons

In the present work we explain the anomalous behavior of the attenuation of the longitudinal acoustic phonon in GaAs as a function of the phonon energy $\omega$ in the sub-THz domain. These attenuations along the [100] direction show a plateau between 0.6 and 1 GHz at low temperatures. We found an excellent agreement between measurements performed by some of us, and new \textit{ab initio} calculations of third-order anharmonic processes. The formation of the plateau is explained by the competition between different phonon-phonon scattering processes as Herring's mechanism, which dominates at low frequencies, saturates and disappears. The plateau is shown to be determined by the phononic final-state phase-space available at a given temperature. We predict that a change of scattering mechanism should also show up in the attenuation of silicon around 1.2-1.7 THz, and argue that the attenuation plateau is a general feature of cubic semiconductors.

Spatio-Temporal Imaging of the Acoustic Field Emitted by a Single Copper Nanowire Copper Nanowires Fabrication

The monochromatic and geometrically anisotropic acoustic field generated by 400 nm and 120 nm diameter copper nanowires simply dropped on a 10 $\mu$m silicon membrane is investigated in transmission using three-dimensional time-resolved femtosecond pump-probe experiments. Two pump-probe time-resolved experiments are carried out at the same time on both side of the silicon substrate. In reflection, the first radial breathing mode of the nanowire is excited and detected. In transmission, the longitudinal and shear waves are observed. The longitudinal signal is followed by a monochromatic component associated with the relaxation of the nanowire's first radial breathing mode. Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulations are performed and accurately reproduce the diffracted field. A shape anisotropy resulting from the large aspect ratio of the nanowire is detected in the acoustic field. The orientation of the underlying nanowires is thus acoustically deduced.

Acoustic confinement in superlattice cavities

The large coupling rate between the acoustic and optical fields confined in GaAs/AlAs superlattice cavities makes them appealing systems for cavity optomechanics. We have developed a mathematical model based on the scattering matrix that allows the acoustic guided modes to be predicted in nano and micropillar superlattice cavities. We demonstrate here that the reflection at the surface boundary considerably modifies the acoustic quality factor and leads to significant confinement at the micropillar center. Our mathematical model also predicts unprecedented acoustic Fano resonances on nanopillars featuring small mode volumes and very high mechanical quality factors, making them attractive systems for optomechanical applications.

Backward Propagating Acoustic Waves in Single Gold Nanobeams

Femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy has been carried out on suspended gold nanostructures with a rectangular cross section lithographed on a silicon substrate. With a thickness fixed to 110 nm and a width ranging from 200 nm to 800 nm, size dependent measurements are used to distinguish which confined acoustic modes are detected. Furthermore, in order to avoid any ambiguity due to the measurement uncertainties on both the frequency and size, pump and probe beams are also spatially shifted to detect guided acoustic phonons. This leads us to the observation of backward propagating acoustic phonons in the gigahertz range ($\sim$3 GHz) in such nanostructures. While backward wave propagation in elastic waveguides has been predicted and already observed at the macroscale, very few studies have been done at the nanoscale. Here, we show that these backward waves can be used as the unique signature of the width dilatational acoustic mode.

Direct Observation of Propagating Gigahertz Coherent Guided Acoustic Phonons in Free Standing Single Copper Nanowires

We report on gigahertz acoustic phonon waveguiding in free-standing single copper nanowires studied by femtosecond transient reflectivity measurements. The results are discussed on the basis of the semianalytical resolution of the Pochhammer and Chree equation. The spreading of the generated Gaussian wave packet of two different modes is derived analytically and compared with the observed oscillations of the sample reflectivity. These experiments provide a unique way to independently obtain geometrical and material characterization. This direct observation of coherent guided acoustic phonons in a single nano-object is also the first step toward nanolateral size acoustic transducer and comprehensive studies of the thermal properties of nanowires.

Direct measurement of coherent subterahertz acoustic phonons mean free path in GaAs

Phonon mean free path is generally inferred from the measurement of thermal conductivity and we are still lacking precise information on this quantity. Recent advances in the field of high frequency phonons transduction using semiconductor superlattices give the opportunity to fill this gap. We present experimental results on the attenuation of longitudinal acoustic phonons in GaAs in the frequency and temperature ranges 0.2-1THz and 10-80K respectively. Surprisingly, we observe a plateau, in the frequency dependence of the attenuation, above 0.4THz, that we ascribe to a breakdown of Herring processes.

Sub-Terahertz Monochromatic Transduction with Semiconductor Acoustic Nanodevices

We demonstrate semiconductor superlattices or nanocavities as narrow band acoustic transducers in the sub-terahertz range. Using picosecond ultrasonics experiments in the transmission geometry with pump and probe incident on opposite sides of the thick substrate, phonon generation and detection processes are fully decoupled. Generating with the semiconductor device and probing on the metal, we show that both superlattices and nanocavities generate spectrally narrow wavepackets of coherent phonons with frequencies in the vicinity of the zone center and time durations in the nanosecond range, qualitatively different from picosecond broadband pulses usually involved in picosecond acoustics with metal generators. Generating in the metal and probing on the nanoacoustic device, we furthermore evidence that both nanostructured semiconductor devices may be used as very sensitive and spectrally selective detectors.

Sound velocity and absorption measurements under high pressure using picosecond ultrasonics in diamond anvil cell. Application to the stability study of AlPdMn

We report an innovative high pressure method combining the diamond anvil cell device with the technique of picosecond ultrasonics. Such an approach allows to accurately measure sound velocity and attenuation of solids and liquids under pressure of tens of GPa, overcoming all the drawbacks of traditional techniques. The power of this new experimental technique is demonstrated in studies of lattice dynamics, stability domain and relaxation process in a metallic sample, a perfect single-grain AlPdMn quasicrystal, and rare gas, neon and argon. Application to the study of defect-induced lattice stability in AlPdMn up to 30 GPa is proposed. The present work has potential for application in areas ranging from fundamental problems in physics of solid and liquid state, which in turn could be beneficial for various other scientific fields as Earth and planetary science or material research.
