Distribution of points near the origin in the $d$-dimensional Lagrange spectrum

We develop a new framework, inspired by Schmidt's games, to study the Lagrange spectrum for simultaneous Diophantine approximation in dimension $d\geq 2$. We show the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ whose best approximation constant lies in $[\varepsilon,\varepsilon(1+\delta\varepsilon^{d})]$, for some constant $\delta>0$, is positive, and for a slightly larger set approaches full dimension as $\varepsilon \to 0$. The proof combines a novel application of the Simplex lemma near rational points with the game-theoretic framework. We also use an elementary observation to show that the naturally defined Lagrange spectrum for systems of linear forms is uncountable in the case of square matrices.

A quantitative framework for sets of exact approximation order by rational numbers

In this paper we study a quantitative notion of exactness within Diophantine approximation. Given $\Psi:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$ and $\omega:(0,\infty)\to (0,1)$ satisfying $\lim_{q\to\infty}\omega(q)=0$, we study the set of points, which we call $E(\Psi,\omega)$, that are $\Psi$-well approximable but not $\Psi(1-\omega)$-well approximable. We prove results on the cardinality and dimension of $E(\Psi,\omega)$. In particular we obtain the following general statements: (i) For any $\omega:(0,\infty)\to (0,1)$ and $\tau>2$ there exists $\Psi:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$ such that $\lim_{q\to\infty}\frac{-\log \Psi(q)}{\log q}=\tau$ and $E(\Psi,\omega)\neq\emptyset.$ (ii) Under natural monotonicity assumptions on $\Psi$ and $\omega,$ we prove that if $\omega$ decays to zero sufficiently slowly (in a way that depends upon $\Psi$) then $E(\Psi,\omega)$ is uncountable. Moreover, under further natural assumptions on $\Psi$ we can calculate the Hausdorff dimension of $E(\Psi,\omega)$. Our main result demonstrates a new threshold for the behaviour of $E(\Psi,\omega)$. A particular instance of this threshold is illustrated by considering functions of the form $\Psi_{\tau}(q)=q^{-\tau}$ when $\tau\in \mathbb{N}_{\geq 3}$. For these functions we prove the following: (iii) If $\omega(q)= Cq^{-\tau(\tau-1)}$ for some sufficiently large $C$ or $\omega(q)=q^{-\tau'}$ for some $\tau'<\tau(\tau-1),$ then $E(\Psi_{\tau},\omega)$ is uncountable and we calculate its Hausdorff dimension. (iv) If $\omega(q)< cq^{-\tau(\tau-1)}$ for some $c\in (0,1)$ for all $q$ sufficiently large then $E(\Psi_{\tau},\omega)=\emptyset.$

Rectangular Shrinking Targets on Self-Similar Carpets

Since the introduction of the shrinking target problem by Hill and Velani in 1995 there has been a surge of interest in the area. In this paper we consider the case where the target is a rectangle, rather than a ball, and the underlying space is a self-similar carpet. We calculate the exact Hausdorff dimension of the resulting shrinking target set. Interestingly the Hausdorff dimension depends on the centre of the target, a condition uncommon in most other shrinking target type problems. This extends a theorem of Wang and Wu [Theorem 12.1, Math. Ann. 2021].

Continued fractions with large prime partial quotients

We determine the Lebesgue measure and Hausdorff dimension of various sets of real numbers with infinitely many partial quotients that are both large and prime, thus extending the well-known theorems by {\L}uczak (1997) and Huang-Wu-Xu (2020). To this end, we obtain new asymptotics on the tail end of the almost prime zeta function. Our results include some recent work by Schindler-Zweim{\"u}ller (2023).

Approximation by uniformly distributed sequences

We consider approximation properties of real points by uniformly distributed sequences. Under some assumptions on the approximation functions, we prove a Khintchine-type $0$-$1$ dichotomy law. We establish a new connection between uniform distribution and the ubiquity property. Namely, we show that a bound on the discrepancy of the sequence implies the ubiquity property, which helps to obtain divergence results. We further obtain Hausdorff dimension results for weighted sets. The key tools in proving these results are the weighted ubiquitous systems and weighted mass transference principle introduced recently by Kleinbock \& Wang, and Wang \& Wu respectively.

A note on limsup sets of annuli

We consider the set of points in infinitely many max-norm annuli centred at rational points in $\mathbb R^{n}$. We give Jarn\'ik-Besicovitch type theorems for this set in terms of Hausdorff dimension. Interestingly, we find that if the outer radii are decreasing sufficiently slowly, dependent only on the dimension $n$, and the thickness of the annuli is decreasing rapidly then the dimension of the set tends towards $n-1$. We also consider various other forms of annuli including rectangular annuli and quasi-annuli described by the difference between balls of two different norms. Our results are deduced through a novel combination of a version of Cassel's Scaling Lemma and a generalisation of the Mass Transference Principle, namely the Mass transference principle from rectangles to rectangles due to Wang and Wu (Math. Ann. 2021).

On the Folklore set and Dirichlet spectrum for matrices

We study the Folklore set of Dirichlet improvable matrices in $\mathbb R^{m\times n}$ which are neither singular nor badly approximable. We prove the non-emptiness for all positive integer pairs $m,n$ apart from $\{m,n\}=\{ 1,1\}$ and $\{m,n\}=\{ 2,3\}$ in a constructive manner. For a wide range of integer pairs $(m,n)$ we construct subsets of the Folklore set with an exact prescribed Dirichlet constant (in some right neighbourhood of $0$). This enables us to provide information on the Dirichlet Spectrum of matrices. The key technique of our construction is to build first vectors of a given Diophantine type, and then to show that most `liftings' to matrices will preserve this Diophantine type. This is a variant of a method introduced by Moshchevitin for uniform approximation. Our technique is often also applicable to arbitrary norms. As a corollary, we obtain lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of these sets. These statements complement previous results of the middle-named author (Selecta Math. 2023), Beresnevich et. al. (Adv. Math. 2023), and Das et. al. (Adv. Math. 2024).

The dimension of the set of $\psi$-badly approximable points in all ambient dimensions; on a question of Beresnevich and Velani

Let $\psi:\mathbb{N} \to [0,\infty)$, $\psi(q)=q^{-(1+\tau)}$ and let $\psi$-badly approximable points be those vectors in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ that are $\psi$-well approximable, but not $c\psi$-well approximable for arbitrarily small constants $c>0$. We establish that the $\psi$-badly approximable points have the Hausdorff dimension of the $\psi$-well approximable points, the dimension taking the value $(d+1)/(\tau+1)$ familiar from theorems of Besicovitch and Jarn\'ik. The method of proof is an entirely new take on the Mass Transference Principle by Beresnevich and Velani (Annals, 2006); namely, we use the colloquially named `delayed pruning' to construct a sufficiently large $\liminf$ set and combine this with ideas inspired by the proof of the Mass Transference Principle to find a large $\limsup$ subset of the $\liminf$ set. Our results are a generalisation of some $1$-dimensional results due to Bugeaud and Moreira (Acta Arith, 2011), but our method of proof is nothing alike.

Weighted approximation for limsup sets

Theorems of Khintchine, Groshev, Jarn\'ik, and Besicovitch in Diophantine approximation are fundamental results on the metric properties of $\Psi$-well approximable sets. These foundational results have since been generalised to the framework of weighted Diophantine approximation for systems of real linear forms (matrices). In this article, we prove analogues of these weighted results in a range of settings including the $p$-adics (Theorems 7 and 8), complex numbers (Theorems 9 and 10), quaternions (Theorems 11 and 12), and formal power series (Theorems 13 and 14). The key tools in proving the main parts of these results are the weighted ubiquitous systems and weighted mass transference principle introduced recently by Kleinbock--Wang [Adv. Math. (2023)] and Wang--Wu [Math. Ann. (2021)].

Dual $p$-adic Diophantine approximation on manifolds

The Generalised Baker-Schmidt Problem (1970) concerns the Hausdorff measure of the set of $\psi$-approximable points on a nondegenerate manifold. Beresnevich-Dickinson-Velani (in 2006, for the homogeneous setting) and Badziahin-Beresnevich-Velani (in 2013, for the inhomogeneous setting) proved the divergence part of this problem for dual approximation on arbitrary nondegenerate manifolds. The divergence part has also been resolved for the $p$-adic setting by Datta-Ghosh in 2022 for the inhomogeneous setting. The corresponding convergence counterpart represents a challenging open problem. In this paper, we prove the homogeneous $p$-adic convergence result for hypersurfaces of dimension at least three with some mild regularity condition, as well as for some other classes of manifolds satisfying certain conditions. We provide similar, slightly weaker results for the inhomogeneous setting. We do not restrict to monotonic approximation functions.

Weighted twisted inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation

We prove a multidimensional weighted analogue of the well-known theorem of Kurzweil (1955) in the metric theory of inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation. Let $A$ be matrix of real numbers, $\Psi$ an $n$-tuple of monotonic decreasing functions, and let $W_{A}(\Psi)$ be the set of points that infinitely often lie in a $\Psi(q)$-neighbourhood of the sequence $\{Aq\}_{q\in\mathbb{N}}$. We prove that the set $ W_{A}(\Psi)$ has zero-full Lebesgue measure under convergent-divergent sum conditions with some mild assumptions on $A$ and the approximating functions $\Psi$. We also prove the Hausdorff dimension results for this set. Along with some geometric arguments, the main ingredients are weighted ubiquity and weighted mass transference principle introduced recently by Kleinbock & Wang (Adv. Math. 2023), and Wang & Wu (Math. Ann. 2021) respectively.

Bad is null

In this paper we develop a general framework of badly approximable points in a metric space $X$ equipped with a $\sigma$-finite doubling Borel regular measure $\mu$. We establish that under mild assumptions the $\mu$-measure of the set of badly approximable points is always zero. The framework can be applied to a variety of settings in Diophantine approximation and dynamical systems, which we also consider, including weighted and $S$-arithmetic Diophantine approximations, Diophantine approximation on manifolds and intrinsic approximations on fractals.

Rectangular shrinking targets for $\mathbb{Z}^m$ actions on tori: well and badly approximable systems

In this paper we investigate the shrinking target property for irrational rotations. This was first studied by Kurzweil (1951) and has received considerable interest of late. Using a new approach, we generalize results of Kim (2007) and Shapira (2013) by proving a weighted effective analogue of the shrinking target property. Furthermore, our results are established in the much wider $S$-arithmetic setting.

Weighted approximation in higher-dimensional missing digit sets

In this note, we use the mass transference principle for rectangles, recently obtained by Wang and Wu (Math. Ann., 2021), to study the Hausdorff dimension of sets of "weighted $\Psi$-well-approximable" points in certain self-similar sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. Specifically, we investigate weighted $\Psi$-well-approximable points in "missing digit" sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The sets we consider are natural generalisations of Cantor-type sets in $\mathbb{R}$ to higher dimensions and include, for example, four corner Cantor sets (or Cantor dust) in the plane with contraction ratio $\frac{1}{n}$ with $n \in \mathbb{N}$.

Counting rational points close to $p$-adic integers and applications in Diophantine approximation

We find upper and lower bounds on the number of rational points that are $\psi$-approximations of some $n$-dimensional $p$-adic integer. Lattice point counting techniques are used to find the upper bound result, and a Pigeon-hole principle style argument is used to find the lower bound result. We use these results to find the Hausdorff dimension for the set of $p$-adic weighted simultaneously approximable points intersected with $p$-adic coordinate hyperplanes. For the lower bound result we show that the set of rational points that $\tau$-approximate a $p$-adic integer form a set of resonant points that can be used to construct a local ubiquitous system of rectangles.

Simultaneous p-adic Diophantine approximation

The goal of this paper is to develop the theory of weighted Diophantine approximation of rational numbers to $p$-adic numbers. Firstly, we establish complete analogues of Khintchine's theorem, the Duffin-Schaeffer theorem and the Jarn\'ik-Besicovitch theorem for `weighted' simultaneous Diophantine approximation in the $p$-adic case. Secondly, we obtain a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of weighted simultaneously approximable points lying on $p$-adic manifolds. This is valid for very general classes of curves and manifolds and have natural constraints on the exponents of approximation. The key tools we use in our proofs are the Mass Transference Principle, including its recent extension due to Wang and Wu, and a Zero-One law for weighted $p$-adic approximations established in this paper.

A lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of weighted simultaneously approximable points over manifolds

Given a weight vector $\tau=(\tau_{1}, \dots, \tau_{n}) \in \mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}$ with each $\tau_{i}$ bounded by certain constraints, we obtain a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of $\tau$-approximable points points over a manifold $\mathcal{M}$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is twice continuously differentiable. From this we produce a lower bound for the set of $\psi$-approximable points over a manifold where $\psi$ is a general approximation function with certain limits. The proof is based on a technique developed by Beresnevich et al. in arXiv:1712.03761, but we use an alternative mass transference style theorem.
