Learning to Look: A Foundation for Visual Understanding

Vision-language models (VLMs) suffer from visual hallucination, such as saying an object that is not present in an image. We ask a more fundamental question: whether a VLM is even aware of where it is looking before understanding the semantic meaning in the image. We formulate this question as a LOOK task: identifying which parts of its visual input were available to the model. We construct the task in a self-supervised way without manually labeling the available region to the model. Our experiments show that existing VLMs fail to localize the visible region. We further show that fine-tuning VLMs on the proposed LOOK task improves a model's awareness of visual input.

LeAVJEPA: A Minimalist Architecture for Audio-Visual Self-Supervised Learning

Prior audio-visual self-supervised learning methods rely on mechanisms such as EMA target encoders, prediction heads, reconstruction decoders, and contrastive losses. We introduce LeAVJEPA, the first audio-visual encoder trained under LeJEPA's collapse-free objective. A single early-fusion Vision Transformer processes audio, video, and joint audio-video inputs. Modality dropout treats a missing modality as another view of the same event, making cross-modal alignment implicit in the objective. The model aligns global embeddings with modality-specific local embeddings, and SIGReg prevents representational collapse. A controlled ablation identifies modality dropout as the key mechanism for audio-visual alignment. Despite the architectural simplicity, LeAVJEPA reaches 36.0 mAP on AudioSet-20K and 91.3% accuracy on ESC-50 under frozen evaluation. After fine-tuning, it reaches 61.1% accuracy on VGGSound, and its embeddings support zero-shot audio-visual retrieval.

AV-JEPA: Extending LeJEPA to Audio-Visual Self-Supervised Learning

We present AV-JEPA, an elegant multimodal extension of LeJEPA to audio-visual self-supervised learning. Using an early-fusion Vision Transformer and modality dropout as masking, the model is trained to align the embeddings of global and per-modality local views, while the SIGReg objective encourages a theoretically optimal distribution. This achieves cross-modal alignment in the latent space, resulting in a remarkably clean architecture with no decoder, EMA teacher, complex multi-term losses, or contrastive negatives. The proposed AV-JEPA backbone delivers competitive classification performance on VGGSound (57.1% top-1) and AudioSet (32.7 mAP) and supports zero-shot audio-video retrieval out of the box.
