Inequivalence of the various notions of completeness for Cartan geometries

We demonstrate that the three prevailing notions of completeness for Cartan geometries are not actually equivalent and provide methods for constructing many examples in the affine case, modernizing and extending results due to Yeaton Clifton. In an effort to rectify the folklore on the topic, we also provide detailed explanations of how specious proofs in the literature that would claim that these types of completeness are equivalent break down.

Hyperbolic contact symplectic lifts

Consider a holomorphic contact manifold. Holomorphic discs tangent to the contact planes define a pseudometric on the manifold. This pseudometric integrates to a pseudodistance. When the pseudodistance is a distance, we call the contact manifold \emph{contact-hyperbolic}, by analogy with Kobayashi hyperbolicity. The goal of this paper is to construct explicit examples of contact-hyperbolic contact manifolds with large automorphism groups. We study Reeb manifolds: holomorphic contact structures equipped with a Reeb vector field whose flow acts freely. Our first main theorem shows that every proper Reeb manifold admits a holomorphic symplectic quotient. It also identifies which symplectic manifolds arise this way. The isomorphism classes of proper Reeb manifolds over a fixed symplectic base manifold are parameterised by the first cohomology. Our second main theorem: a proper Reeb manifold is (complete) contact-hyperbolic if and only if its symplectic quotient manifold is (complete) Kobayashi hyperbolic. This theorem allows us to construct many new explicit examples of contact-hyperbolic contact manifolds. Finally, we study the group of contact biholomorphisms. Contact hyperbolicity implies that this group is a finite-dimensional Lie group. For contact $3$-manifolds, we sharply bound the dimension of the automorphism group. We give examples with automorphism groups reaching every possible dimension. Our third main theorem: the unique maximally symmetric example, up to isomorphism, is the contact manifold $\mathbb B^2_{z,w}\times\mathbb C_y$ with contact form $dy+(1-z)^{-2}dw$.

Holomorphic parabolic geometries on smooth projective varieties

We classify the holomorphic parabolic geometries on compact complex manifolds of general type. We accomplish this by bounding the numerical dimension of any smooth projective variety in terms of geometric invariants of the flag variety model of any holomorphic parabolic geometry on that variety. Along the way, we uncover foliations and fibrations on smooth projective varieties that admit holomorphic parabolic geometries.

Characteristic forms of complex Cartan geometries III: G-structures

Characteristic class relations in Dolbeault cohomology follow from the existence of a holomorphic geometric structure (for example, holomorphic conformal structures, holomorphic Engel distributions, holomorphic projective connections, and holomorphic foliations). These relations can be calculated directly from the representation theory of the structure group, without selecting any metric or connection or having any knowledge of the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the manifold. This paper improves on its predecessor [17] by allowing infinite type geometric structures.

Characteristic forms of complex Cartan geometries II

Characteristic class relations in Dolbeault cohomology follow from the existence of a holomorphic Cartan geometry (for example, a holomorphic conformal structure or a holomorphic projective connection). These relations can be calculated directly from the representation theory of the structure group, without selecting any metric or connection or having any knowledge of the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the manifold. This paper improves on its predecessor by allowing noncompact and non-K\"ahler manifolds and by deriving invariants in cohomology of vector bundles, not just in scalar Dolbeault cohomology, and computing relations involving Chern--Simons invariants in Dolbeault cohomology. For the geometric structures previously considered in its predecessor, this paper gives stronger results and simplifies the computations. It gives the first results on Chern--Simons invariants of Cartan geometries.

Cominuscule subvarieties of flag varieties

We show that every flag variety contains a naturally defined homogeneous cominuscule subvariety. From the Dynkin diagram of the flag variety, we compute the Dynkin diagram of that subvariety.

Cartan geometries on complex manifolds of algebraic dimension zero

We show that compact complex manifolds of algebraic dimension zero bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry of algebraic type have infinite fundamental group. This generalizes the main Theorem in [DM] where the same result was proved for the special cases of holomorphic affine connections and holomorphic conformal structures.

Logarithmic Cartan geometry on complex manifolds

We pursue the study of holomorphic Cartan geometry with singularities. We introduce the notion of logarithmic Cartan geometry on a complex manifold, with polar part supported on a normal crossing divisor. In particular, we show that the push-forward of a Cartan geometry constructed using a finite Galois ramified covering is a logarithmic Cartan geometry (the polar part is supported on the ramification locus). We also study the specific case of the logarithmic Cartan geometry with the model being the complex affine space.

Summary of progress on the Blaschke conjecture

The Blaschke conjecture claims that every compact Riemannian manifold whose injectivity radius equals its diameter is, up to constant rescaling, a compact rank one symmetric space. We summarize the intuition behind this problem, the proof that such manifolds have the cohomology of compact rank one symmetric spaces, and the proof of the conjecture for homology spheres and homology real projective spaces. We also summarize what is known on the diffeomorphism, homeomorphism and homotopy types of such manifolds.

The Hartogs extension phenomenon for holomorphic parabolic and reductive geometries

Every holomorphic effective parabolic or reductive geometry on a domain over a Stein manifold extends uniquely to the envelope of holomorphy of the domain. This result completes the open problems of my earlier paper on extension of holomorphic geometric structures on complex manifolds. We use this result to classify the Hopf manifolds which admit holomorphic reductive geometries, and to classify the Hopf manifolds which admit holomorphic parabolic geometries. Every Hopf manifold which admits a holomorphic parabolic geometry with a given model admits a flat one. We classify flat holomorphic parabolic geometries on Hopf manifolds.

Holomorphic Cartan geometries and rational curves

We prove that any compact Kähler manifold bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry contains a rational curve just when the Cartan geometry is inherited from a holomorphic Cartan geometry on a lower dimensional compact Kähler manifold.

Symmetries of holomorphic geometric structures on tori

We prove that any holomorphic locally homogeneous geometric structure on a complex torus, modelled on a complex homogeneous surface, is translation invariant. We conjecture that this result is true is any dimension. In higher dimension we prove it here for nilpotent models. We also prove that in any dimension the translation invariant $(X, G)$-structures form a union of connected components in the deformation space of $(X, G)$-structures.
