Debiasing physico-chemical models in air quality monitoring by combining different pollutant concentration measures

Air quality monitoring requires to produce accurate estimation of nitrogen dioxide or fine particulate matter concentration maps, at different moments. A typical strategy is to combine different types of data. On the one hand, concentration maps produced by deterministic physicochemical models at urban scale, and on the other hand, concentration measures made at different points, different moments, and by different devices. These measures are provided first by a small number of reference stations, which give reliable measurements of the concentration, and second by a larger number of micro-sensors, which give biased and noisier measurements. The proposed approach consists in modeling the bias of the physicochemical model and estimating the parameters of this bias using all the available concentration measures. Our model relies on a partition of the geographical space of interest into different zones within which the bias is assumed to be modeled by a single affine transformation of the actual concentration. Our approach allows to improve the concentration maps provided by the deterministic models but also to understand the behavior of micro-sensors and their contribution in improving air quality monitoring. We introduce the model, detail its implementation and experiment it through numerical results using datasets collected in Grenoble (France).

Least squares moment identification of binary regression mixtures models

We consider finite mixtures of generalized linear models with binary output. We prove that cross moment (between the output and the regression variables) until order 3 are sufficient to identify all parameters of the model. We propose a least-squares estimation method based on those moments and we prove the consistency and the Gaussian asymptotic behavior of the estimator. We provide simulation results and comparisons with likelihood methods. Numerical experiments were conducted using the R-package Morpheus that we developed for our least-squares moment method and with the R-package flexmix for likelihood methods. We then give some possible extensions to finite mixtures of regressions with binary output including both continuous and categorical covariates, and possibly longitudinal data.

Screening and metamodeling of computer experiments with functional outputs. Application to thermal-hydraulic computations

To perform uncertainty, sensitivity or optimization analysis on scalar variables calculated by a cpu time expensive computer code, a widely accepted methodology consists in first identifying the most influential uncertain inputs (by screening techniques), and then in replacing the cpu time expensive model by a cpu inexpensive mathematical function, called a metamodel. This paper extends this methodology to the functional output case, for instance when the model output variables are curves. The screening approach is based on the analysis of variance and principal component analysis of output curves. The functional metamodeling consists in a curve classification step, a dimension reduction step, then a classical metamodeling step. An industrial nuclear reactor application (dealing with uncertainties in the pressurized thermal shock analysis) illustrates all these steps.
