On the geometry of Coulomb branches

Coulomb branches of 3-dimensional $N=4$ gauge theories, as defined by Braverman--Finkelberg--Nakajima, form a large and interesting class of symplectic singularities. In this paper, we give a geometric description of these varieties in terms of blowups of toric compactifications, uniformly across the rational, $K$-theoretic, and elliptic settings, which in physics are often associated with 3-, 4-, and 5-dimensional versions of these theories. We use the resulting local description to classify the symplectic leaves of Coulomb branches and describe their transverse slices in terms of the classification of zero-dimensional leaves of certain smaller Coulomb branches. We also discuss related topics, including removing an unnecessary hypothesis from a theorem of Gannon and the author on functoriality for Coulomb branches, and clarifying the relationship with transverse Hilbert schemes by refining the approach of Bielawski and Foscolo.

Knot contact homology as a planar limit of Chern-Simons theory

We prove a conjecture relating augmentation varieties to the large $N$ limit of Chern-Simons theory. Although this does not directly establish that the augmentation polynomial of a knot is the classical limit of a deformed $\hat{A}$-polynomial - as suggested by Aganagi\'c and Vafa - it reduces the problem to characterizing certain algebraic properties of a module over the quantum torus, introduced in work of Gaiotto, Kannagi, and Sanjurjo. We term this the \emph{HOMFLYPT difference module}, which captures relations between the colored HOMFLYPT polynomials of different antisymmetric colorings. We demonstrate that the classical limit of this difference module for a knot is precisely the degree 0 abelianized knot contact homology of the knot, and we provide a natural extension of this result to links.

An update on Heisenberg and Kac-Moody categorification

Heisenberg categories act on many Abelian categories appearing in type A representation theory. There is also a general procedure to construct from a Heisenberg action another action of a Kac-Moody 2-category for some associated Cartan matrix. One of the adjunctions on the Kac-Moody side is matched up in an easy way with adjunctions on the Heisenberg side, but the second adjunction is much harder to describe. In this paper, we derive explicit formulae for this difficult adjunction, leading to some further simplifications to the existing theory.

Categorification of quasi-split iquantum groups

We introduce a new family of graded 2-categories generalizing the 2-quantum groups introduced by Khovanov, Lauda and Rouquier. We use them to categorify quasi-split iquantum groups in all symmetric types.

Steadied Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras and local models for blocks

It's known that many different blocks of $\mathbb{F}_pS_n$ for different values of $n$ are equivalent as categories, though the corresponding block algebras are almost never isomorphic. Thus, it is a challenging problem to give one particularly nice representative of this Morita equivalence class of algebras. This has been accomplished for the case of RoCK blocks through work of Chuang--Kessar, Turner, and Evseev--Kleshchev. In this paper, we give a new perspective on this problem, applying not just to RoCK blocks of $S_n$, but also to all blocks of Ariki--Koike algebras. We do this by considering steadied quotients of KLRW algebras: these algebras are a natural generalization of cyclotomic quotients, already related to $S_n$ and Ariki--Koike algebras in work of Brundan--Kleshchev. These algebras are defined by ``tilting'' the cyclotomic relations so that we kill the two-sided ideal defined by certain configurations on the left and right sides of our diagrams. We show a Morita equivalence between these algebras and blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras generalizing the work discussed above.

Functoriality of Coulomb branches

We prove that the affine closure of the cotangent bundle of the parabolic base affine space for $\mathrm{GL}_n$ or $\mathrm{SL}_n$ is a Coulomb branch, which confirms a conjecture of Bourget-Dancer-Grimminger-Hanany-Zhong. In particular, we show that the algebra of functions on the cotangent bundle of the parabolic base affine space of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ or $\mathrm{SL}_n$ is finitely generated. We prove this by showing that, if we are given a map $H \to G$ of complex reductive groups and a representation of $G$ satisfying an assumption we call gluable, then the Coulomb branch for the induced representation of $H$ is obtained from the corresponding Coulomb branch for $G$ by a certain Hamiltonian reduction procedure. In particular, we show that the Coulomb branch associated to any quiver with no loops can be obtained from Coulomb branches associated to quivers with exactly two vertices using this procedure.

Tilting Generator for the $T^*Gr(2,4)$ Coulomb Branch

Remarkable work of Kaledin, based on earlier joint work with Bezrukavnikov, has constructed a tilting generator of the category of coherent sheaves on a very general class of symplectic resolutions of singularities. In this paper, we give a concrete construction of this tilting generator on the cotangent bundle of $Gr(2,4)$, the Grassmannian of 2-planes in $\mathbb{C}^4$. This construction builds on work of the second author describing these tilting bundles in terms of KLRW algebras, but in this low-dimensional case, we are able to describe our tilting generator as a sum of geometrically natural bundles on $T^*Gr(2,4)$: line bundles and their extensions, as well as the tautological bundle and its perpendicular.

Bubbles in the affine Brauer and Kauffman categories

We introduce a generating function approach to the affine Brauer and Kauffman categories and show how it allows one to efficiently recover important sets of relations in these categories. We use this formalism to deduce restrictions on possible categorical actions and show how this recovers admissibility results that have appeared in the literature on cyclotomic Birman-Murakami-Wenzl (BMW) algebras and their degenerate versions, also known as cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras or VW algebras.

Degenerate twisted traces on quantized Kleinian singularities of type A

We study the space of non-degenerate traces on quantized Kleinian singularities of type A by studying their complement, the degenerate traces. In particular, we find the dimension of the space of twisted traces as a function of the corresponding automorphism and the quantization parameters, encoded in a polynomial $P$.

Twisted traces on abelian quantum Higgs and Coulomb branches

We study twisted traces on the quantum Higgs branches $A_{\operatorname{Higgs}}$ of $3d, \mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories, that is, the quantum Hamiltonian reductions of Weyl algebras. In theories which are good, we define a twisted trace that arises naturally from the correlation functions of the gauge theory. We show that this trace induces an inner product and a short star product on $A_{\operatorname{Higgs}}$. We analyze this trace in the case of an abelian gauge group and show that it has a natural expansion in terms of the twisted traces of Verma modules, confirming a conjecture of the first author and Okazaki. This expansion has a natural interpretation in terms of 3-d mirror symmetry, and we predict that it can be interpreted as an Atiyah-Bott fixed-point formula under the quantum Hikita isomorphism.

3-dimensional mirror symmetry

This expository article discusses recent advances in understanding 3-dimensional mirror symmetry and the mathematical definitions of the Higgs and Coulomb branches. This is a slightly expanded version of an article appearing in the Notices of the AMS.

On the representation theory of Schur algebras in type $B$

We study the representation theory of the type B Schur algebra $\mathcal{L}^n(m)$ with unequal parameters introduced in work of Lai, Nakano and Xiang. For generic values of $q,Q$, this algebra is semi-simple and Morita equivalent to the Hecke algebra, but for special values, its category of modules is more complicated. We study this representation theory by comparison with the cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebra of Dipper, James and Mathas, and use this to construct a cellular algebra structure on $\mathcal{L}^n(m)$. This allows us to index the simple $\mathcal{L}^n(m)$-modules as a subset of the set of bipartitions of $n$. For $m$ large, this will be all bipartitions of $n$ if and only if $\mathcal{L}^n(m)$ is quasi-hereditary, in which case, $\mathcal{L}^n(m)$ is Morita equivalent to the cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebra. We prove a modified version of a conjecture of Lai, Nakano and Xiang giving the values of $(q,Q)$ where this holds: if $m$ is large and odd, $Q\neq -q^k$ for all $k$ satisfying $\frac{4-n}{2}\leq k<n$; if $m$ is large and even, $Q\neq -q^k$ for all $k$ satisfying $-n<k<n.$ We also prove two strengthenings of this result: an indexing of the simple modules when $q$ is not a root of unity, and a characterization of the quasi-hereditary blocks of $\mathcal{L}^n(m)$.

Nil-Brauer categorifies the split iquantum group of rank one

We prove that the Grothendieck ring of the monoidal category of finitely generated graded projective modules for the nil-Brauer category is isomorphic to an integral form of the split iquantum group of rank one. Under this isomorphism, the indecomposable graded projective modules correspond to the icanonical basis. We also derive character formulae for irreducible graded modules and deduce various branching rules.

The nil-Brauer category

We introduce the nil-Brauer category and prove a basis theorem for its morphism spaces. This basis theorem is an essential ingredient required to prove that nil-Brauer categorifies the split iquantum group of rank one. As this iquantum group is a basic building block for $\imath$-quantum groups of higher rank, we expect that the nil-Brauer category will play a role in future developments related to the categorification of quantum symmetric pairs.

RoCK blocks for affine categorical representations

Given a categorical action of a Lie algebra, a celebrated theorem of Chuang and Rouquier proves that the blocks corresponding to weight spaces in the same orbit of the Weyl group are derived equivalent, proving an even more celebrated conjecture of Brou\'e for the case of the symmetric group. In many cases, these derived equivalences are $t$-exact, and thus induce equivalences of abelian categories between different blocks. We call two such blocks ``Scopes equivalent.'' In this paper, we describe how Scopes equivalence classes for any affine categorification can be classified by the chambers of a finite hyperplane arrangement, which can be found through simple Lie theoretic calculations. We pay special attention to the largest equivalence classes, which we call RoCK, and show how this matches with recent work of Lyle on Rouquier blocks for Ariki-Koike algebras. We also provide Sage code that tests whether blocks are RoCK and finds RoCK blocks for Ariki-Koike algebras.

Coherent sheaves and quantum Coulomb branches II: quiver gauge theories and knot homology

We continue our study of noncommutative resolutions of Coulomb branches in the case of quiver gauge theories. These include the Slodowy slices in type A and symmetric powers in $\mathbb{C}^2$ as special cases. These resolutions are based on vortex line defects in quantum field theory, but have a precise mathematical description, which in the quiver case is a modification of the formalism of KLRW algebras. While best understood in a context which depends on the geometry of the affine Grassmannian and representation theory in characteristic $p$, we give a description of the Coulomb branches and their commutative and non-commutative resolutions which can be understood purely in terms of algebra. This allows us to construct a purely algebraic version of the knot homology theory defined using string theory by Aganagi\'c, categorifying the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants for minuscule representations of type ADE Lie algebras. We show that this homological invariant agrees with the categorification of these invariants previously defined by the author, and thus with Khovanov-Rozansky homology in type A.

Lie algebra actions on module categories for truncated shifted Yangians

We develop a theory of parabolic induction and restriction functors relating modules over Coulomb branch algebras, in the sense of Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima. Our functors generalize Bezrukavnikov-Etingof's induction and restriction functors for Cherednik algebras, but their definition uses different tools. After this general definition, we focus on quiver gauge theories attached to a quiver $\Gamma$. The induction and restriction functors allow us to define a categorical action of the corresponding symmetric Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}_{\Gamma}$ on category $ \mathcal O $ for these Coulomb branch algebras. When $ \Gamma $ is of Dynkin type, the Coulomb branch algebras are truncated shifted Yangians and quantize generalized affine Grassmannian slices. Thus, we regard our action as a categorification of the geometric Satake correspondence. To establish this categorical action, we define a new class of "flavoured" KLRW algebras, which are similar to the diagrammatic algebras originally constructed by the second author for the purpose of tensor product categorification. We prove an equivalence between the category of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over a Coulomb branch algebra and the modules over a flavoured KLRW algebra. This equivalence relates the categorical action by induction and restriction functors to the usual categorical action on modules over a KLRW algebra.

Gelfand-Tsetlin modules: canonicity and calculations

In this paper, we give a more down-to-earth introduction to the connection between Gelfand-Tsetlin modules over $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and diagrammatic KLRW algebras, and develop some of its consequences. In addition to a new proof of this description of the category Gelfand-Tsetlin modules appearing in earlier work, we show three new results of independent interest: (1) we show that every simple Gelfand-Tsetlin module is a canonical module in the sense of Early, Mazorchuk and Vishnyakova, and characterize when two maximal ideals have isomorphic canonical modules, (2) we show that the dimensions of Gelfand-Tsetlin weight spaces in simple modules can be computed using an appropriate modification of Leclerc's algorithm for computing dual canonical bases, and (3) we construct a basis of the Verma modules of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ which consists of generalized eigenvectors for the Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebra. Furthermore, we present computations of multiplicities and Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions for all integral Gelfand-Tsetlin modules in ranks 3 and 4; unfortunately, for ranks $>4$, our computers are not adequate to perform these computations.
