A Note on Moving Frames along Sobolev Maps and the Regularity of Weakly Harmonic Maps

The purpose of this note is twofold. First we show that, for weakly differentiable maps between Riemannian manifolds of any dimension, a smallness condition on a Morrey-norm of the gradient is sufficient to guarantee that the pulled-back tangent bundle is trivialised by a finite-energy frame over simply connected regions in the domain. This is achieved via new structure equations for a connection introduced by Rivi\`ere in the study of weakly harmonic maps, combined with Coulomb-frame methods and the Hardy-BMO duality of Fefferman-Stein. We also prove that for weakly harmonic maps from domains of any dimension into closed homogeneous targets, a smallness condition on the BMO seminorm of the map is sufficient to obtain full regularity.

Low-energy $\alpha$-harmonic maps into the round sphere

We classify low-energy $\alpha$-harmonic maps from a closed non-spherical Riemannian surface $\Sigma$ of constant curvature to the round sphere via their bubble scales and centres. In particular we show that as $1<\alpha\downarrow 1$ and assuming $E_\alpha$ is close to $| \Sigma|+4\pi$ then degree-one $\alpha$-harmonic maps blow a bubble based at a critical point $a_c$ of a an explicit function $\mathcal{J}$ and at scale $\sqrt{ |\mathcal{J}(a_c)|^{-1}(\alpha-1)}$. Up to a constant, $\mathcal{J}$ is the sum of the squares of any $L^2$-orthonormal basis of holomorphic one-forms on the domain.

CMC hypersurfaces with bounded Morse index

We develop a bubble-compactness theory for embedded CMC hypersurfaces with bounded index and area inside closed Riemannian manifolds in low dimensions. In particular we show that convergence always occurs with multiplicity one, which implies that the minimal blow-ups (bubbles) are all catenoids. We also provide bounds on the area of separating CMC surfaces of bounded (Morse) index and use this, together with the previous results, to bound their genus.

{\L}ojasiewicz inequalities near simple bubble trees

In this paper we prove a gap phenomenon for critical points of the $H$-functional on closed non-spherical surfaces when $H$ is constant, and in this setting furthermore prove that sequences of almost critical points satisfy {\L}ojasiewicz inequalities as they approach the first non-trivial bubble tree. To prove these results we derive sufficient conditions for {\L}ojasiewicz inequalities to hold near a finite-dimensional submanifold of almost-critical points for suitable functionals on a Hilbert space.

Bubbling analysis and geometric convergence results for free boundary minimal surfaces

We investigate the limit behaviour of sequences of free boundary minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and volume, by presenting a detailed blow-up analysis near the points where curvature concentration occurs. Thereby, we derive a general quantization identity for the total curvature functional, valid in ambient dimension less than eight and applicable to possibly improper limit hypersurfaces. In dimension three, this identity can be combined with the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to provide a constraint relating the topology of the free boundary minimal surfaces in a converging sequence, of their limit, and of the bubbles or half-bubbles that occur as blow-up models. We present various geometric applications of these tools, including a description of the behaviour of index one free boundary minimal surfaces inside a 3-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature and strictly mean convex boundary. In particular, in the case of compact, simply connected, strictly mean convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ unconditional convergence occurs for all topological types except the disk and the annulus, and in those cases the possible degenerations are classified.

Geometric convergence results for closed minimal surfaces via bubbling analysis

We present some geometric applications, of global character, of the bubbling analysis developed by Buzano and Sharp for closed minimal surfaces, obtaining smooth multiplicity one convergence results under upper bounds on the Morse index and suitable lower bounds on either the genus or the area. For instance, we show that given any Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature on the three-dimensional sphere the class of embedded minimal surfaces of index one and genus $\gamma$ is sequentially compact for any $\gamma\geq 1$. Furthemore, we give a quantitative description of how the genus drops as a sequence of minimal surfaces converges smoothly, with mutiplicity $m\geq 1$, away from finitely many points where curvature concentration may happen. This result exploits a sharp estimate on the multiplicity of convergence in terms of the number of ends of the bubbles that appear in the process.

Compactness analysis for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces

We investigate compactness phenomena involving free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds of dimension less than eight. We provide natural geometric conditions that ensure strong one-sheeted graphical subsequential convergence, discuss the limit behaviour when multi-sheeted convergence happens and derive various consequences in terms of finiteness and topological control.

Index estimates for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces

We show that the Morse index of a properly embedded free boundary minimal hypersurface in a strictly mean convex domain of the Euclidean space grows linearly with the dimension of its first relative homology group (which is at least as big as the number of its boundary components, minus one). In ambient dimension three, this implies a lower bound for the index of a free boundary minimal surface which is linear both with respect to the genus and the number of boundary components. Thereby, the compactness theorem by Fraser and Li implies a strong compactness theorem for the space of free boundary minimal surfaces with uniformly bounded Morse index inside a convex domain. Our estimates also imply that the examples constructed, in the unit ball, by Fraser-Schoen and Folha-Pacard-Zolotareva have arbitrarily large index. Extensions of our results to more general settings (including various classes of positively curved Riemannian manifolds and other convexity assumptions) are discussed.

Comparing the Morse index and the first Betti number of minimal hypersurfaces

By extending and generalising previous work by Ros and Savo, we describe a method to show that the Morse index of every closed minimal hypersurface on certain positively curved ambient manifolds is bounded from below by a linear function of its first Betti number. The technique is flexible enough to prove that such a relation between the index and the topology of minimal hypersurfaces holds, for example, on all compact rank one symmetric spaces, on products of the circle with spheres of arbitrary dimension and on suitably pinched submanifolds of the Euclidean spaces. These results confirm a general conjecture due to Schoen and Marques-Neves for a wide class of ambient spaces.

Qualitative and quantitative estimates for minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and area

We prove qualitative estimates on the total curvature of closed minimal hypersurfaces in closed Riemannian manifolds in terms of their index and area, restricting to the case where the hypersurface has dimension less than seven. In particular, we prove that if we are given a sequence of closed minimal hypersurfaces of bounded area and index, the total curvature along the sequence is quantised in terms of the total curvature of some limit surface, plus a sum of total curvatures of complete properly embedded minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space - all of which are finite. Thus, we obtain qualitative control on the topology of minimal hypersurfaces in terms of index and area as a corollary.

Compactness of the space of minimal hypersurfaces with bounded volume and p-th Jacobi eigenvalue

Given a closed Riemannian manifold of dimenion less than eight, we prove a compactness result for the space of closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces satisfying a volume bound and a uniform lower bound on the first eigenvalue of the stability operator. When the latter assumption is replaced by a uniform lower bound on the p-th Jacobi eigenvalue for p greater or equal than 2 one gains strong convergence to a smooth limit submanifold away from at most p-1 points.

Smooth compactness of $f$-minimal hypersurfaces with bounded $f$-index

Let $(M^{n+1},g,e^{-f}d\mu)$ be a complete smooth metric measure space with $2\leq n\leq 6$ and Bakry-\'{E}mery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of complete embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces in $M$ with uniform upper bounds on $f$-index and weighted volume. As a corollary, we obtain a smooth compactness theorem for the space of embedded self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with $2\leq n\leq 6$. We also prove some estimates on the $f$-index of $f$-minimal hypersurfaces, and give a conformal structure of $f$-minimal surface with finite $f$-index in three-dimensional smooth metric measure space.

Global estimates and energy identities for elliptic systems with antisymmetric potentials

We derive global estimates in critical scale invariant norms for solutions of elliptic systems with antisymmetric potentials and almost holomorphic Hopf differential in two dimensions. Moreover we obtain new energy identities in such norms for sequences of solutions of these systems. The results apply to harmonic maps into general target manifolds and surfaces with prescribed mean curvature. In particular our results confirm a conjecture of Rivi\`ere in the two-dimensional setting.

Regularity at the free boundary for Dirac-harmonic maps from surfaces

We establish the regularity theory for certain critical elliptic systems with an anti-symmetric structure under inhomogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet boundary constraints. As applications, we prove full regularity and smooth estimates at the free boundary for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps from spin Riemann surfaces. Our methods also lead to the full interior $\epsilon$-regularity and smooth estimates for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps in all dimensions.

Critical $\bar{\partial}$ problems in one complex dimension and some remarks on conformally invariant variational problems in two real dimensions

We will study a linear first order system, a connection $\db$ problem, on a vector bundle equipped with a connection, over a Riemann surface. We show optimal conditions on the connection forms which allow one to find a holomorphic frame, or in other words to prove the optimal regularity of our solution. The underlying geometric principle, Theorem \ref{theorem KM}, is classical and well known \cite[Theorem 1]{KM}; it gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a connection to induce a holomorphic structure on a vector bundle over a complex manifold. Here we explore the limits of this statement when the connection is not smooth and our findings lead to a very short proof of the regularity of harmonic maps in two dimensions as well as re-proving a recent estimate of Lamm and Lin \cite{lamm_lin} concerning conformally invariant variational problems in two dimensions.
