Effects of MiFID II on stock price formation

This paper examines effects of MiFID II on European stock markets. We study the effects of the new tick size regime, both intraday and in the closing auction. An increase (decrease) in tick size is associated with a decrease (increase) in intraday liquidity, but a more (less) stable market. In the closing auction an increase in tick size has a positive effect on liquidity. Moreover, we report a positive relationship between tick size and transacted volume, in particular in the closing auction. Finally, closing auction volumes increased heavily since MiFID II and price formation in closing auctions became more efficient.

The semi-parametric Bernstein-von Mises theorem for regression models with symmetric errors

In a smooth semi-parametric model, the marginal posterior distribution for a finite dimensional parameter of interest is expected to be asymptotically equivalent to the sampling distribution of any efficient point-estimator. The assertion leads to asymptotic equivalence of credible and confidence sets for the parameter of interest and is known as the semi-parametric Bernstein-von Mises theorem. In recent years, it has received much attention and has been applied in many examples. We consider models in which errors with symmetric densities play a role; more specifically, it is shown that the marginal posterior distributions of regression coefficients in the linear regression and linear mixed effect models satisfy the semi-parametric Bernstein-von Mises assertion. As a consequence, Bayes estimators in these models achieve frequentist inferential optimality, as expressed e.g. through Hajek's convolution and asymptotic minimax theorems. Conditions for the prior on the space of error densities are relatively mild and well-known constructions like the Dirichlet process mixture of normal densities and random series priors constitute valid choices. Particularly, the result provides an efficient estimate of regression coefficients in the linear mixed effect model, for which no other efficient point-estimator was known previously.

Semiparametric posterior limits under local asymptotic exponentiality

Consider semiparametric models that display local asymptotic exponentiality (Ibragimov and Has'minskii (1981)), an asymptotic property of the likelihood associated with discontinuities of densities. Our interest goes to estimation of the location of such discontinuities while other aspects of the density form a nuisance parameter. It is shown that under certain conditions on model and prior, the posterior distribution displays Bernstein-von Mises-type asymptotic behaviour, with exponential distributions as the limiting sequence. In contrast to regular settings, the maximum likelihood estimator is inefficient under this form of irregularity. However, Bayesian point estimators based on the limiting posterior distribution attain the minimax risk. Therefore, the limiting behaviour of the posterior is used to advocate efficiency of Bayesian point estimation rather than compare it to frequentist estimation procedures based on the maximum likelihood estimator. Results are applied to semiparametric LAE location and scaling examples.

Event Weighted Tests for Detecting Periodicity in Photon Arrival Times

This paper treats the problem of detecting periodicity in a sequence of photon arrival times, which occurs, for example, in attempting to detect gamma-ray pulsars. A particular focus is on how auxiliary information, typically source intensity, background intensity, and incidence angles and energies associated with each photon arrival should be used to maximize the detection power. We construct a class of likelihood-based tests, score tests, which give rise to event weighting in a principled and natural way, and derive expressions quantifying the power of the tests. These results can be used to compare the efficacies of different weight functions, including cuts in energy and incidence angle. The test is targeted toward a template for the periodic lightcurve, and we quantify how deviation from that template affects the power of detection.

Superconformal Hypermultiplets

We present theories of N=2 hypermultiplets in four spacetime dimensions that are invariant under rigid or local superconformal symmetries. The target spaces of theories with rigid superconformal invariance are (4n)-dimensional {\it special} hyper-Kähler manifolds. Such manifolds can be described as cones over tri-Sasakian metrics and are locally the product of a flat four-dimensional space and a quaternionic manifold. The latter manifolds appear in the coupling of hypermultiplets to N=2 supergravity. We employ local sections of an Sp$(n)\times{\rm Sp}(1)$ bundle in the formulation of the Lagrangian and transformation rules, thus allowing for arbitrary coordinatizations of the hyper-Kähler and quaternionic manifolds.
