Finite Index and Do Carmo Question for Constant Mean Curvature Hypersurfaces

We prove that any finite $\delta$-index hypersurface $M$ in ${\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ with constant mean curvature must be minimal, provided either of the following conditions holds: - the volume growth of $M$ is sub-exponential; - the Ricci curvature of $M$ satisfies $\operatorname{Ric}_M\geq -\frac{3(1-\delta)}{n-1}|A|^2g,$ where $A$ is the second fundamental form and $g$ is the metric on $M.$ In the second case, our result further implies that, in addition to being minimal, such an $M$ must be a hyperplane. We emphasize that no restriction on the dimension is imposed. Moreover, the statement in the second case is new even for finite index hypersurfaces ($\delta=0$).

An extension of Liebmann's Theorem to hypersurfaces with boundary

Liebmann's Theorem asserts that a compact, connected, convex surface with constant mean curvature (CMC) in the Euclidean space must be a totally umbilical sphere. In this article we extend Liebmann's result to hypersurfaces with boundary. More precisely, we prove that a locally convex, embedded, compact, connected CMC hypersurface bounded by a closed strictly convex $(n-1)$-dimensional submanifold in a hyperplane $\Pi^n\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ lies in one of the two halfspace determined by $\Pi$ and inherits the symmetries of the boundary. Consequently, spherical caps are the only such hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature bounded by a $(n-1)-$sphere.

Special Weingarten surfaces with planar convex boundary

We prove a Ros-Rosenberg theorem in the setting of Special Weingarten surfaces. We show that a compact, connected, embedded, Special Weingarten surface in $\mathhb{R}^3$ with planar convex boundary is a topological disk under mild suitable assumptions.

The Jenkins-Serrin problem in 3-manifolds with a Killing vector field

We consider a Riemannian submersion from a 3-manifold $\mathbb{E}$ to a surface $M$, both connected and orientable, whose fibers are the integral curves of a Killing vector field without zeros, not necessarily unitary. We solve the Jenkins-Serrin problem for the minimal surface equation in $\mathbb{E}$ over a relatively compact open domain $\Omega\subset M$ with prescribed finite or infinite values on some arcs of the boundary under the only assumption that the same value $+\infty$ or $-\infty$ cannot be prescribed on two adjacent components of $\partial\Omega$ forming a convex angle. The domain $\Omega$ can have reentrant corners as well as closed curves in its boundary. We show that the solution exists if and only if some generalized Jenkins-Serrin conditions (in terms of a conformal metric in $M$) are fulfilled. We develop further the theory of divergence lines to study the convergence of a sequence of minimal graphs. We also provide maximum principles that guarantee the uniqueness of the solution. Finally, we obtain new examples of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and in other homogeneous $3$-manifolds.

On constant higher order mean curvature hypersurfaces in $\mathbb H^n \times \mathbb R$

We classify hypersurfaces with rotational symmetry and positive constant $r$-th mean curvature in $\mathbb H^n \times \mathbb R$. Specific constant higher order mean curvature hypersurfaces invariant under hyperbolic translation are also treated. Some of these invariant hypersurfaces are employed as barriers to prove a Ros--Rosenberg type theorem in $\mathbb H^n \times \mathbb R$: we show that compact connected hypersurfaces of constant $r$-th mean curvature embedded in $\mathbb H^n \times [0,\infty)$ with boundary in the slice $\mathbb H^n \times \{0\}$ are topological disks under suitable assumptions.

On Stability and Isoperimetry of Constant Mean Curvature Spheres of $\mathbb H^n\times\mathbb R$ and $\mathbb S^n\times\mathbb R.$

We approach the one-parameter family of rotational constant mean curvature (CMC) spheres of $\mathbb H^n\times\mathbb R$ and $\mathbb S^n\times\mathbb R$ focusing on their stability and isoperimetry properties. We prove that all rotational CMC spheres of $\mathbb H^n\times\mathbb R$ are stable, and that the ones in $\mathbb S^n\times\mathbb R$ with sufficiently small (resp.~large) mean curvature are unstable (resp.~stable). We also show that there exists a one-parameter family of stable CMC rotational spheres in $\mathbb S^n\times\mathbb R$ which are not isoperimetric (i.e., they do not bound isoperimetric regions). We establish the uniqueness of the regions enclosed by the rotational CMC spheres of $\mathbb H^n\times\mathbb R$ as solutions to the isoperimetric problem, filling in a gap in the original proof given by Hsiang and Hsiang. We establish, as well, a sharp upper bound for the volume of the spherical regions of $\mathbb S^n\times\mathbb R$ which are unique solutions to the isoperimetric problem. In essence, all these results come from the fact that the rotational CMC spheres of $\mathbb H^n\times\mathbb R$, and those of $\mathbb S^n\times\mathbb R$ with sufficiently large mean curvature, are nested.

Uniqueness of Hypersurfaces of Constant Higher Order Mean Curvature in Hyperbolic Space

We study the uniqueness of horospheres and equidistant spheres in hyperbolic space under different conditions. First we generalize the Bernstein theorem by Do Carmo and Lawson to the embedded hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature. Then we prove two Bernstein type results for immersed hypersurfaces under different assumptions. Last, we show the rigidity of horospheres and equidistant spheres in terms of their higher order mean curvatures.

On the stability of constant higher mean curvature hypersurfaces in a Riemannian manifold

We propose a notion of stability for constant k-mean curvature hypersurfaces in a general Riemannian manifold and we give some applications. When the ambient manifold is a Space Form, our notion coincides with the known one, given by means of the variational problem. Our approach led us to work with two different stability operators and we are able to relate stability to the study of the respective first eigenvalues. Moreover, we prove that embedded rotational spheres with constant k-mean curvature in Hnx R or in SnxR are not stable.

On the topology of constant mean curvature surfaces in H2 X R with boundary in a plane

A gap in the proof prevents us to show that surfaces with constant mean curvature closed to 1/2 in H2 X R and having boundary with curvature greater than one, contained in a horizontal section P of H2 X R are topological disks, provided they are contained in one of the two halfspaces determined by P. This is the analogue in H2 X R of a result in R3 by A. Ros and H. Rosenberg [13, Theorem 2].

On the structure of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{H}^n\times \mathbb{R}$ with finite strong total curvature

We prove that if $X:M^n\to\mathbb{H}^n\times \mathbb{R}$, $n\geq 3$, is a an orientable, complete immersion with finite strong total curvature, then $X$ is proper and $M$ is diffeomorphic to a compact manifold $\bar M$ minus a finite number of points $q_1, \dots q_k$. Adding some extra hypothesis, including $H_r=0,$ where $H_r$ is a higher order mean curvature, we obtain more information about the geometry of a neighbourhood of each puncture. The reader will also find in this paper a classification result for the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{H}^n\times \mathbb{R}$ which satisfy $H_r=0$ and are invariant by hyperbolic translations and a maximum principle in a half space for these hypersurfaces.

Entire solutions of the degenerateMonge-Ampere equation with a finite number of singularities

We determine the global behavior of every C^2-solution to the two-dimensional degenerate Monge-Ampere equation, u_{xx}u_{yy}-u_{xy}^2=0, over the finitely punctured plane. With this, we classify every solution in the once or twice punctured plane. Moreover, when we have more than two singularities, if the solution u is not linear in a half-strip, we obtain that the singularities are placed at the vertices of a convex polyhedron P and the graph of u is made by pieces of cones outside of P which are suitably glued along the sides of the polyhedron. Finally, if we look for analytic solutions, then there is at most one singularity and the graph of $u$ is either a cylinder (no singularity) or a cone (one singularity).

Minimal Graphs in Nil_3 : existence and non-existence results

We study the minimal surface equation in the Heisenberg space, Nil_3. A geometric proof of non existence of minimal graphs over non convex, bounded and unbounded domains is achieved (our proof holds in the Euclidean space as well). We solve the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface equation over bounded and unbounded convex domains, taking bounded, piecewise continuous boundary value. We are able to construct a Scherk type minimal surface and we use it as a barrier to construct non trivial minimal graphs over a wedge of angle between \pi/2 ,and \pi taking non negative continuous boundary data, having at least quadratic growth. In the case of an half- plane, we are also able to give solutions (with either linear or quadratic growth), provided some geometric hypothesis on the boundary data. Finally, some open problem arising from our work, are posed.

Height and area estimates for constant mean curvature graphs in E(\kappa,\tau)-spaces

We obtain area growth estimates for constant mean curvature graphs in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$-spaces with $\kappa\leq 0$, by finding sharp upper bounds for the volume of geodesic balls in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$. We focus on complete graphs and graphs with zero boundary values. For instance, we prove that entire graphs in $\mathbb{E}(\kappa,\tau)$ with critical mean curvature have at most cubic intrinsic area growth. We also obtain sharp upper bounds for the extrinsic area growth of graphs with zero boundary values, and study distinguished examples in detail such as invariant surfaces, $k$-noids and ideal Scherk graphs. Finally we give a relation between height and area growth of minimal graphs in Heisenberg space ($\kappa=0$), and prove a Collin-Krust type estimate for such minimal graphs.

Hypersurfaces with H_{r+1}=0 in H x R

We prove the existence of rotational hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{H}^n\times \mathbb{R}$ with $H_{r+1}=0$ and we classify them. Then we prove some uniqueness theorems for $r$-minimal hypersurfaces with a given (finite or asymptotic) boundary. In particular, we obtain a Schoen-type Theorem for two ended complete hypersurfaces.

On the Entropies of Hypersurfaces with bounded mean curvature

We are interested in the impact of entropies on the geometry of a hypersurface of a Riemannian manifold. In fact, we will be able to compare the volume entropy of a hypersurface with that of the ambient manifold, provided some geometric assumption are satisfied. This depends on the existence of an embedded tube around such hypersurface. Among the consequences of our study of the entropies, we point out some new answers to a question of do Carmo on stable Euclidean hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature.

Minimal ends in H2xR with finite total curvature and a Schoen type theorem

In this paper we prove that a complete minimal surface immersed in H^2xR, with finite total curvature and two ends, each one asymptotic to a vertical geodesic plane, must be a horizontal catenoid. Moreover, we give a geometric description of minimal ends of finite total curvature in H^2xR. We also prove that a minimal complete end E with finite total curvature is properly immersed and that the Gaussian curvature of E is locally bounded in terms of the geodesic distance to its boundary.
