A Measurement of the Branching Ratio of $π^0$ Dalitz Decay using $K_L \rightarrow π^0π^0π^0$ Decays

We present a measurement of $B(π^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- γ)/B(π^0 \rightarrow γγ)$, the Dalitz branching ratio, using data taken in 1999 by the E832 KTeV experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We use neutral pions from fully reconstructed $K_L$ decays in flight; the measurement is based on about 60 thousand $K_L \rightarrow π^0π^0π^0 \rightarrow γγ~γγ~e^+e^-γ$ decays. We normalize to $K_L \rightarrow π^0π^0π^0 \rightarrow 6γ$ decays. We find $B(π^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- γ)/B(π^0 \rightarrow γγ)$ $(m_{e^+e^-}$ > 15 MeV/$c^2)$ = $[3.920 \pm 0.016(stat) \pm 0.036 (syst)] \times 10^{-3}$. Using the Mikaelian and Smith prediction for the $e^+e^-$ mass spectrum, we correct the result to the full $e^+e^-$ mass range. The corrected result is $B(π^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- γ)/B(π^0 \rightarrow γγ) = [1.1559 \pm 0.0047(stat) \pm 0.0106 (syst)]$%. This result is consistent with previous measurements and the uncertainty is a factor of three smaller than any previous measurement.

The QUIET Instrument

The Q/U Imaging ExperimenT (QUIET) is designed to measure polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background, targeting the imprint of inflationary gravitational waves at large angular scales (~ 1 degree). Between 2008 October and 2010 December, two independent receiver arrays were deployed sequentially on a 1.4 m side-fed Dragonian telescope. The polarimeters which form the focal planes use a highly compact design based on High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) that provides simultaneous measurements of the Stokes parameters Q, U, and I in a single module. The 17-element Q-band polarimeter array, with a central frequency of 43.1 GHz, has the best sensitivity (69 uK sqrt(s)) and the lowest instrumental systematic errors ever achieved in this band, contributing to the tensor-to-scalar ratio at r < 0.1. The 84-element W-band polarimeter array has a sensitivity of 87 uK sqrt(s) at a central frequency of 94.5 GHz. It has the lowest systematic errors to date, contributing at r < 0.01. The two arrays together cover multipoles in the range l= 25-975. These are the largest HEMT-based arrays deployed to date. This article describes the design, calibration, performance of, and sources of systematic error for the instrument.

First Season QUIET Observations: Measurements of CMB Polarization Power Spectra at 43 GHz in the Multipole Range 25 <= ell <= 475

The Q/U Imaging ExperimenT (QUIET) employs coherent receivers at 43GHz and 95GHz, operating on the Chajnantor plateau in the Atacama Desert in Chile, to measure the anisotropy in the polarization of the CMB. QUIET primarily targets the B modes from primordial gravitational waves. The combination of these frequencies gives sensitivity to foreground contributions from diffuse Galactic synchrotron radiation. Between 2008 October and 2010 December, >10,000hours of data were collected, first with the 19-element 43GHz array (3458hours) and then with the 90-element 95GHz array. Each array observes the same four fields, selected for low foregrounds, together covering ~1000deg^2. This paper reports initial results from the 43GHz receiver which has an array sensitivity to CMB fluctuations of 69uK sqrt(s). The data were extensively studied with a large suite of null tests before the power spectra, determined with two independent pipelines, were examined. Analysis choices, including data selection, were modified until the null tests passed. Cross correlating maps with different telescope pointings is used to eliminate a bias. This paper reports the EE, BB and EB power spectra in the multipole range ell=25-475. With the exception of the lowest multipole bin for one of the fields, where a polarized foreground, consistent with Galactic synchrotron radiation, is detected with 3sigma significance, the E-mode spectrum is consistent with the LCDM model, confirming the only previous detection of the first acoustic peak. The B-mode spectrum is consistent with zero, leading to a measurement of the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r=0.35+1.06-0.87. The combination of a new time-stream double-demodulation technique, Mizuguchi-Dragone optics, natural sky rotation, and frequent boresight rotation leads to the lowest level of systematic contamination in the B-mode power so far reported, below the level of r=0.1

Precise Measurements of Direct CP Violation, CPT Symmetry, and Other Parameters in the Neutral Kaon System

We present precise tests of CP and CPT symmetry based on the full dataset of K to pipi decays collected by the KTeV experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory during 1996, 1997, and 1999. This dataset contains 16 million K to 2pi0 and 69 million K to pi+pi- decays. We measure the direct CP violation parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (19.2 pm 2.1)x10-4. We find the KL-KS mass difference Deltam = (5270 pm 12)x10^6 hbar/s and the KS lifetime tauS = (89.62 pm 0.05)x10-12 s. We also measure several parameters that test CPT invariance. We find the difference between the phase of the indirect CP violation parameter, epsilon, and the superweak phase, phi_epsilon - phi_SW = (0.40 pm 0.56) degrees. We measure the difference of the relative phases between the CP violating and CP conserving decay amplitudes for K to pi+pi- (phi+-) and for K to 2pi0 (phi00), Delta phi = (0.30 pm 0.35) degrees. From these phase measurements, we place a limit on the mass difference between K0 and K0bar, DeltaM < 4.8 x 10-19 GeV/c^2 at 95% C.L. These results are consistent with those of other experiments, our own earlier measurements, and CPT symmetry.

Observation of the Decay Xi^0 --> Sigma^+ mu^- nu(bar)

The Xi^0 muon semi-leptonic decay has been observed for the first time with nine identified events using the KTeV beam line and detector at Fermilab. The decay is normalized to the Xi^0 beta decay mode and yields a value for the ratio of decay rates of $(1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.5}(stat.)\pm0.2(syst.))\times 10^{-2}$. This is in agreement with the SU(3) flavor symmetric quark model.

Final Results from the KTeV Experiment on the Decay KL -> pi0 gamma gamma

We report on a new measurement of the branching ratio B(KL->pi0 gamma gamma)using the KTeV detector. We reconstruct 1982 events with an estimated background of 608, that results in B(KL -> pi0 gamma gamma) = (1.29 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.05(syst)) x 10**-6. We also measure the parameter, aV, which characterizes the strength of vector meson exchange terms in this decay. We find aV = -0.31 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.07(syst). These results utilize the full KTeV data set collected from 1997 to 2000 and supersede earlier KTeV measurements of the branching ratio and aV.

Determination of the Parity of the Neutral Pion via the Four-Electron Decay

We present a new determination of the parity of the neutral pion via the double Dalitz decay pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e-. Our sample, which consists of 30511 candidate decays, was collected from K_L -> pi0 pi0 pi0 decays in flight at the KTeV-E799 experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We confirm the negative pi^0 parity, and place a limit on scalar contributions to the pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e- decay amplitude of less than 3.3% assuming CPT conservation. The pi^0 gamma* gamma* form factor is well described by a momentum-dependent model with a slope parameter fit to the final state phase space distribution. Additionally, we have measured the branching ratio of this mode to be B(pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e-) = (3.26 +- 0.18) x 10^(-5).

New Measurements of Fine-Scale CMB Polarization Power Spectra from CAPMAP at Both 40 and 90 GHz

We present new measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization from the final season of the Cosmic Anisotropy Polarization MAPper (CAPMAP). The data set was obtained in winter 2004-2005 with the 7 m antenna in Crawford Hill, New Jersey, from 12 W-band (84-100 GHz) and 4 Q-band (36-45 GHz) correlation polarimeters with 3.3' and 6.5' beamsizes, respectively. After selection criteria were applied, 956 (939) hours of data survived for analysis of W-band (Q-band) data. Two independent and complementary pipelines produced results in excellent agreement with each other. A broad suite of null tests as well as extensive simulations showed that systematic errors were minimal, and a comparison of the W-band and Q-band sky maps revealed no contamination from galactic foregrounds. We report the E-mode and B-mode power spectra in 7 bands in the range 200 < l < 3000, extending the range of previous measurements to higher l. The E-mode spectrum, which is detected at 11 sigma significance, is in agreement with cosmological predictions and with previous work at other frequencies and angular resolutions. The BB power spectrum provides one of the best limits to date on B-mode power at 4.8 uK^2 (95% confidence).

CMB Polarimetry using Correlation Receivers with the PIQUE and CAPMAP Experiments

The Princeton IQU Experiment (PIQUE) and the Cosmic Anisotropy Polarization MAPper (CAPMAP) are experiments designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on sub-degree scales in an area within 1 degree of the North Celestial Pole using heterodyne correlation polarimeters and off-axis telescopes located in central New Jersey. PIQUE produced the tightest limit on the CMB polarization prior to its detection by DASI, while CAPMAP has recently detected polarization at l~1000. The experimental methods and instrumentation for these two projects are described in detail with emphasis on the particular challenges involved in measuring the tiny polarized component of the CMB.

First measurements of the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation at small angular scales from CAPMAP

Polarization results from the Cosmic Anisotropy Polarization MAPper (CAPMAP) experiment are reported. These are based upon 433 hours, after cuts, observing a 2 square degree patch around the North Celestial Pole (NCP) with four 90 GHz correlation polarimeters coupled to optics defining $4\arcmin$ beams. The E-mode flat bandpower anisotropy within $\ell=940^{+330}_{-300}$ is measured as 66$^{+69}_{-29} μ$K$^2$; the 95% Confidence level upper limit for B-mode power within $\ell=1050^{+590}_{-520}$ is measured as 38 $μ$K$^2$.

Measurements of the Branching Fractions and Decay Distributions for KL->πμνγand KL->πeνγ

We present measurements of R_Kl3rad = Gamma(KL->π\ellνγ; Egcm > 10 MeV)/Gamma(KL->π\ellν), where ell = mu or e, and Egcm is the photon energy in the kaon rest frame. These measurements are based on KL decays collected in 1997 by the KTeV (E832) experiment at Fermilab. With samples of 1385 KL->πμνγand 14221 KL->π\eνγcandidates, we find R_Km3rad = (0.530 +- 0.019)% and R_Ke3rad = (4.942 +- 0.062)%. We also examine distributions of photon energy and lepton-photon angle.

New Limits on the Polarized Anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background at Subdegree Angular Scales

We update the limit from the 90 GHz PIQUE ground-based polarimeter on the magnitude of any polarized anisotropy of the cosmic microwave radiation. With a second year of data, we have now limited both Q and U on a ring of 1 degree radius. The window functions are broad: for E-mode polarization, the effective l is = 191 +143 -132. We find that the E-mode signal can be no greater than 8.4 microK (95% CL), assuming no B-mode polarization. Limits on a possible B-mode signal are also presented.

A Limit on the Polarized Anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background at Subdegree Angular Scales

A ground-based polarimeter, PIQUE, operating at 90 GHz has set a new limit on the magnitude of any polarized anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background. The combination of the scan strategy and full width half maximum beam of 0.235 degrees gives broad window functions with average multipoles, l = 211+294-146 and l = 212+229-135 for the E- and B-mode window functions, respectively. A joint likelihood analysis yields simultaneous 95% confidence level flat band power limits of 14 and 13 microkelvin on the amplitudes of the E- and B-mode angular power spectra, respectively. Assuming no B-modes, a 95% confidence limit of 10 microkelvin is placed on the amplitude of the E-mode angular power spectrum alone.

CP Violation in K0 Decays

In this lecture, I will review results on the study of direct CP violation- where the violation occurs in a particle decay rather than in particle-anti particle mixing. Brief comments on rare decays, particularly those with a CP reach, will be made. Finally, I will indicate how the community would like to see the field evolve.
