Observation of the Meissner effect with ultracold atoms in bosonic ladders

We report on the observation of the Meissner effect in bosonic flux ladders of ultracold atoms. Using artificial gauge fields induced by laser-assisted tunneling, we realize arrays of decoupled ladder systems that are exposed to a uniform magnetic field. By suddenly decoupling the ladders and projecting into isolated double wells, we are able to measure the currents on each side of the ladder. For large coupling strengths along the rungs of the ladder, we find a saturated maximum chiral current corresponding to a full screening of the artificial magnetic field. For lower coupling strengths, the chiral current decreases in good agreement with expectations of a vortex lattice phase. Our work marks the first realization of a low-dimensional Meissner effect and, furthermore, it opens the path to exploring interacting particles in low dimensions exposed to a uniform magnetic field.

Realization of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian with ultracold atoms in optical lattices

We demonstrate the experimental implementation of an optical lattice that allows for the generation of large homogeneous and tunable artificial magnetic fields with ultracold atoms. Using laser-assisted tunneling in a tilted optical potential we engineer spatially dependent complex tunneling amplitudes. Thereby atoms hopping in the lattice accumulate a phase shift equivalent to the Aharonov-Bohm phase of charged particles in a magnetic field. We determine the local distribution of fluxes through the observation of cyclotron orbits of the atoms on lattice plaquettes, showing that the system is described by the Hofstadter model. Furthermore, we show that for two atomic spin states with opposite magnetic moments, our system naturally realizes the time-reversal symmetric Hamiltonian underlying the quantum spin Hall effect, i.e., two different spin components experience opposite directions of the magnetic field.

Free fermion antibunching in a degenerate atomic Fermi gas released from an optical lattice

Noise in a quantum system is fundamentally governed by the statistics and the many-body state of the underlying particles. Whereas for bosonic particles the correlated noise observed for e.g. photons or bosonic neutral atoms can still be explained within a classical field description with fluctuating phases, the anticorrelations in the detection of fermionic particles have no classical analogue. The observation of such fermionic antibunching is so far scarce and has been confined to electrons and neutrons. Here we report on the first direct observation of antibunching of neutral fermionic atoms. Through an analysis of the atomic shot noise in a set of standard absorption images, of a gas of fermionic 40K atoms released from an optical lattice, we find reduced correlations for distances related to the original spacing of the trapped atoms. The detection of such quantum statistical correlations has allowed us to characterise the ordering and temperature of the Fermi gas in the lattice. Moreover, our findings are an important step towards revealing fundamental fermionic many-body quantum phases in periodic potentials, which are at the focus of current research.

Pfaffian-like ground state for 3-body-hard-core bosons in 1D lattices

We propose a Pfaffian-like Ansatz for the ground state of bosons subject to 3-body infinite repulsive interactions in a 1D lattice. Our Ansatz consists of the symmetrization over all possible ways of distributing the particles in two identical Tonks-Girardeau gases. We support the quality of our Ansatz with numerical calculations and propose an experimental scheme based on mixtures of bosonic atoms and molecules in 1D optical lattices in which this Pfaffian-like state could be realized. Our findings may open the way for the creation of non-abelian anyons in 1D systems.

Exploiting Quantum Parallelism To Simulate Quantum Random Many-Body Systems

We present an algorithm that exploits quantum parallelism to simulate randomness in a quantum system. In our scheme, all possible realizations of the random parameters are encoded quantum mechanically in a superposition state of an auxiliary system. We show how our algorithm allows for the efficient simulation of dynamics of quantum random spin chains with known numerical methods. We also propose an experimental realization based on atoms in optical lattices in which disorder could be simulated in parallel and in a controlled way through the interaction with another atomic species.

Quantum information processing using localized ensembles of nuclear spins

We describe a technique for quantum information processing based on localized en sembles of nuclear spins. A qubit is identified as the presence or absence of a collective excitation of a mesoscopic ensemble of nuclear spins surrounding a single quantum dot. All single and two-qubit operations can be effected using hyperfine interactions and single-electron spin rotations, hence the proposed scheme avoids gate errors arising from entanglement between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Ultra-long coherence times of nuclear spins suggest that this scheme could be particularly well suited for applications where long lived memory is essential.

Adiabatic Path to Fractional Quantum Hall States of a Few Bosonic Atoms

We propose a realistic scheme to create motional entangled states of a few bosonic atoms. It can experimentally be realized with a gas of ultra cold bosonic atoms trapped in a deep optical lattice potential. By simultaneously deforming and rotating the trapping potential on each lattice site it is feasible to adiabatically create a variety of entangled states on each lattice well. We fully address the case of N=2 and N=4 atoms per well and identify a sequence of fractional quantum Hall states: the Pfaffian state, the 1/2-Laughlin quasiparticle and the 1/2-Laughlin state. Exact knowledge of the spectrum has allowed us to design adiabatic paths to these states, with all times and parameters well within the reach of current experimental setups. We further discuss the detection of these states by measuring different properties as their density profile, angular momentum or correlation functions.

Fermionic Atoms in Optical Superlattices

Fermionic atoms in an optical superlattice can realize a very peculiar Anderson lattice model in which impurities interact with each other through a discretized set of delocalized levels. We investigate the interplay between Kondo effect and magnetism under these finite-size features. We find that Kondo effect can dominate over magnetism depending on the parity of the number of particles per discretized set. We show how Kondo-induced resonances of measurable size can be observed through the atomic interference pattern.

From Cooper pairs to Luttinger liquids with bosonic atoms in optical lattices

We propose a scheme to observe typical strongly correlated fermionic phenomena with bosonic atoms in optical lattices. For different values of the sign and strength of the scattering lengths it is possible to reach a "superconducting" regime, where the system exhibits atomic pairing, or a Luttinger liquid behavior. We identify the range of parameters where these phenomena appear, illustrate our predictions with numerical calculations, and show how to detect the presence of pairing.

Fermionizing a small gas of ultracold bosons

We study the physics of a rapidly-rotating gas of ultracold atomic bosons, with an internal degree of freedom. We show that in the limit of rapid rotation of the trap the problem exactly maps onto that of non-interacting fermions with spin in the lowest Landau level. The spectrum of the real bosonic system is identical to the one of the effective fermions, with the same eigenvalues and the same density of states. When the ratio of the number of atoms to the spin degeneracy is an integer number, the ground state for the effective fermions is an integer quantum Hall state. The corresponding bosonic state is a fractional quantum Hall liquid whose filling factor ranges in the sequence nu=1/2, 2/3, 3/4, ..., as the spin degeneracy increases. Anyons with 1/2,1/3,1/4, ... statistics can be created by inserting lasers with the appropriate polarizations. A special situation appears when the spin degeneracy equals the number of atoms in the gas. The ground state is then the product of a completely antisymmetric spin state and a nu=1 Laughlin state. In this case the system exhibits fermionic excitations with fermionic statistics though the real components are bosonic atoms.

1/2-Anyons in small atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We discuss a way of creating, manipulating and detecting anyons in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates consisting of a small number of atoms . By achieving a quasidegeneracy in the atomic motional states we drive the system into a 1/2--Laughlin state for fractional quantum Hall bosons. Localized 1/2--quasiholes can be created by focusing lasers at the desired positions. We show how to manipulate these quasiholes in order to probe directly their 1/2--statistics.

Skyrme crystal or Skyrme liquid?

We address the quantum melting phase transition of the Skyrme crystal. Based on generic sum rules for two-dimensional, isotropic electron quantum liquids in the lowest Landau level, we propose analytic expressions for the pair distribution functions of spin-polarized and spin-unpolarized liquid phases at filling factors $2/3\leqν\leq 1$. From the pair distribution functions we calculate the energy of such liquid phases and compare with the energy of the solid phase. The comparison suggests that the quantum melting phase transition may lie much closer to $ν=1$ than ever expected.

Spin-isospin textured excitations in a double layer at filling factor $ν=2$

We study the charged excitations of a double layer at filling factor 2 in the ferromagnetic regime. In a wide range of Zeeman and tunneling splittings we find that the low energy charged excitations are spin-isospin textures with the charge mostly located in one of the layers. As tunneling increases, the parent spin texture in one layer becomes larger and it induces, in the other layer, a shadow spin texture antiferromagnetically coupled to the parent texture. These new quasiparticles should be observable by measuring the strong dependence of its spin on tunneling and Zeeman couplings.

Skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets as spin-waves bound to unbalanced magnetic flux quanta

A microscopic description of (baby)skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets is derived from a scattering theory of collective (neutral) spin modes by a bare quasiparticle. We start by mapping the low lying spectrum of spin waves in the uniform ferromagnet onto that of free moving spin excitons, and then we study their scattering by the defect of charge. In the presence of this disturbance, the local spin stiffness varies in space, and we translate it into an inhomogeneus metric in the Hilbert space supporting the excitons. An attractive potencial is then required to preserve the symmetry under global spin rotations, and it traps the excitons around the charged defect. The quasiparticle now carries a spin texture. Textures containing more than one exciton are described within a mean-field theory, the interaction among the excitons being taken into account through a new renormalization of the metric. The number of excitons actually bound depends on the Zeeman coupling, that plays the same role as a chemical potencial. For small Zeeman energies, the defect binds many excitons which condensate. As the bound excitons have a unit of angular momentum, provided by the quantum of magnetic flux left unbalanced by the defect of charge, the resulting texture turns out to be a topological excitation of charge 1. Its energy is that given by the non-linear sigma model for the ground state in this topological sector, i.e. the texture is a skyrmion.
