Soap bubbles on the surface of a liquid: a playful universe in 3+1 dimensions, a real universe in 4+1 dimensions

Very simple experiments based on an analogy between two theories (gravitation and capillarity) allowed us to construct a two dimension space toy-universe composed of the surface of a three-dimensional water tank with floating soap bubbles and bubble clusters. This very simple approach leads to a surprising description of our universe with, in particular, the existence of a fourth dimension inaccessible to us. Such a 4th macroscopic dimension suggests the existence of a huge 4 D tank of heavy fluid (analogous to our 3 D water tank) sitting below our three dimensional universe (which is the surface of the main 4 dimensions universe). Among other consequences:an original interpretation of the event horizon of black holes or a simple answer to the problem of missing dark matter.

Coherent spin dynamics in gadolinium-doped CaWO4 crystal

We report the first observation of Rabi oscillations in the spin-7/2 ensemble of trivalent gadolinium ions hosted in CaWO$_4$ single crystal. A number of transitions within the lowest electronic multiplet $^8S_{7/2}$ of Gd$^{3+}$ ion are studied using a combination of continuous-wave and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The corresponding Rabi damping curves and the spin coherence times are detected at varying strengths of the microwave field. These data are well reproduced by a theoretical model which accounts for the intrinsic inhomogeneity of the microwave field within the microwave resonator and the magnetic dipole interactions in the diluted spin ensemble. The results indicate that the studied 8-level ground manifold of Gd$^{3+}$ ion can represent an effective three qubit quantum system.

Coherent manipulation of dipolar coupled spins in an anisotropic environment

We study coherent dynamics in a system of dipolar coupled spin qubits diluted in solid and subjected to a driving microwave field. In the case of rare earth ions, anisotropic crystal background results in anisotropic g tensor and thus modifies the dipolar coupling. We develop a microscopic theory of spin relaxation in transient regime for the frequently encountered case of axially symmetric crystal field. The calculated decoherence rate is nonlinear in Rabi frequency. We show that the direction of static magnetic field that corresponds to the highest spin g-factor is preferable in order to obtain higher number of coherent qubit operations. The results of calculations are in excellent agreement with our experimental data on Rabi oscillations recorded for a series of CaWO4 crystals with different concentrations of Nd3+ ions.

Anisotropy of the molecular magnet V$_{15}$ spin Hamiltonian detected by high-field electron spin resonance

The molecular compound K$_6$[V$^{IV}_{15}$As$^{III}_6$O$_{42}$(H$_2$O)] $\cdot$ 8H$_2$O, in short V$_{15}$, has shown important quantum effects such as coherent spin oscillations. The details of the spin quantum dynamics depend on the exact form of the spin Hamiltonian. In this study, we present a precise analysis of the intramolecular interactions in V$_{15}$. To that purpose, we performed high-field electron spin resonance measurements at 120 GHz and extracted the resonance fields as a function of crystal orientation and temperature. The data are compared against simulations using exact diagonalization to obtain the parameters of the molecular spin Hamiltonian.

Coherent Magnetism and Spin-Orbit Interaction in Garnet Films Probed with Femtosecond Magneto-Optical Four Wave Mixing

We report about the dephasing of the spins states in a Garnet film excited by femtosecond laser pulses. It is shown that magneto-optical four-wave-mixing signals are efficiently generated and controlled with an external static magnetic field. The self-diffraction of either two or three femtosecond pulses allows us determining independently the coherent response time ($T_2$ < 50 fs) and the population relaxation, which occurs in several steps. After the laser induced demagnetization, the spin-lattice relaxation is the dominant mechanism ($T_{1,spin-lat}$ < 1.35 ps) and the precession of the magnetization takes place at later times ($T_{1,prec}$ < 150 ps). The coherent response of the spins states is modeled with a multi-level hydrogen-like system, taking into account the fundamental relativistic quantum dynamics of the spins. Our experimental approach is general and opens the way to investigating quantum magnetism in ordered magnetic systems useful for applications in information and communications technologies.

Quantum interference oscillations of the superparamagnetic blocking in an Fe8 molecular nanomagnet

We show that the dynamic magnetic susceptibility and the superparamagnetic blocking temperature of an Fe8 single molecule magnet oscillate as a function of the magnetic field Hx applied along its hard magnetic axis. These oscillations are associated with quantum interferences, tuned by Hx, between different spin tunneling paths linking two excited magnetic states. The oscillation period is determined by the quantum mixing between the ground S=10 and excited multiplets. These experiments enable us to quantify such mixing. We find that the weight of excited multiplets in the magnetic ground state of Fe8 amounts to approximately 11.6%.

Muon diffusion and electronic magnetism in Y$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report a $\mu$SR study in a Y$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ single crystal. We observe slow local field fluctuations at low temperature which become faster as the temperature is increased. Our analysis suggests that muon diffusion is present in this system and becomes small below 40 K and therefore incoherent. A surprisingly strong electronic magnetic signal is observed with features typical for muons thermally diffusing towards magnetic traps below $\approx 100$ K and released from them above this temperature. We attribute the traps to Ti$^{3+}$ defects in the diluted limit. Our observations are highly relevant to the persistent spin dynamics debate on $R_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores and their crystal quality.

Evolution of spin relaxation processes in LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$F$_4$ with increasing x studied via AC-susceptibility and muon spin relaxation

We present measurements of magnetic field and frequency dependences of the low temperature (T = 1.8 K) AC-susceptibility, and temperature and field dependences of the longitudinal field positive muon spin relaxation ({\mu}SR) for LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$F$_4$ with x = 0.0017, 0.0085, 0.0408, and 0.0855. The fits of numerical simulations to the susceptibility data for the x = 0.0017, 0.0085 and 0.0408 show that Ho-Ho cross-relaxation processes become more important at higher concentrations, signaling the crossover from single-ion to correlated behavior. We simulate the muon spin depolarization using the parameters extracted from the susceptibility, and the simulations agree well with our data for samples with x = 0.0017 and 0.0085. The {\mu}SR data for samples with x = 0.0408 and 0.0855 at low temperatures (T < 10 K) cannot be described within a single-ion picture of magnetic field fluctuations and give evidence for additional mechanisms of depolarization due to Ho$^{3+}$ correlations. We also observe an unusual peak in the magnetic field dependence of the muon relaxation rate in the temperature interval 10 - 20 K that we ascribe to a modification of the Ho$^{3+}$ fluctuation rate due to a field induced shift of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited doublet crystal field states relative to a peak in the phonon density of states centered near 63 cm$^{-1}$.

Proposal for an interference experiment to test the applicability of quantum theory to event-based processes

We analyze a single-particle Mach-Zehnder interferometer experiment in which the path length of one arm may change (randomly or systematically) according to the value of an external two-valued variable $x$, for each passage of a particle through the interferometer. Quantum theory predicts an interference pattern that is independent of the sequence of the values of $x$. On the other hand, corpuscular models that reproduce the results of quantum optics experiments carried out up to this date show a reduced visibility and a shift of the interference pattern depending on the details of the sequence of the values of $x$. The proposed experiment will show that: (1) it can be described by quantum theory, and thus not by the current corpuscular models, or (2) it cannot be described by quantum theory but can be described by the corpuscular models or variations thereof, or (3) it can neither be described by quantum theory nor by corpuscular models. Therefore, the proposed experiment can be used to determine to what extent quantum theory provides a description of observed events beyond the usual statistical level.

Quantum simulations and experiments on Rabi oscillations of spin qubits: intrinsic {\sl vs} extrinsic damping

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance experiments show that the decay of Rabi oscillations of ensembles of spin qubits depends noticeably on the microwave power and more precisely on the Rabi frequency, an effect recently called "driven decoherence". By direct numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of the associated many-body system, we scrutinize the different mechanisms that may lead to this type of decoherence. Assuming the effects of dissipation to be negligible ($T_1=\infty$), it is shown that a system of dipolar-coupled spins with -- even weak-- random inhomogeneities is sufficient to explain the salient features of the experimental observations. Some experimental examples are given to illustrate the potential of the numerical simulation approach.

Absence of Ferromagnetism in Mn-doped Tetragonal Zirconia

In a recent letter, it has been predicted within first principle studies that Mn-doped ZrO2 compounds could be good candidate for spintronics application because expected to exhibit ferromagnetism far beyond room temperature. Our purpose is to address this issue experimentally for Mn-doped tetragonal zirconia. We have prepared polycrystalline samples of Y0.15(Zr0.85-yMny)O2 (y=0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 & 0.20) by using standard solid state method at equilibrium. The obtained samples were carefully characterized by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, elemental color mapping, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. From the detailed structural analyses, we have observed that the 5% Mn doped compound crystallized into two symmetries (dominating tetragonal & monoclinic), whereas higher Mn doped compounds are found to be in the tetragonal symmetry only. The spectral splitting of the Mn 3s core-level x-ray photoelectron spectra confirms that Mn ions are in the Mn3+ oxidation state and indicate a local magnetic moment of about 4.5 μB/Mn. Magnetic measurements showed that compounds up to 10% of Mn doping are paramagnetic with antiferromagnetic interactions. However, higher Mn doped compound exhibits local ferrimagnetic ordering. Thus, no ferromagnetism has been observed for all Mn-doped tetragonal ZrO2 samples.

μSR Study of Spin Dynamics in LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_{x}$F$_{4}$

We present zero-field μSR measurements for LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_{x}$F$_{4}$ samples with x = 0.0017, 0.0085, 0.0406, and 0.0855. We characterize the dynamics associated with the formation of the (F-μ-F)$^{-1}$ complex by comparing our data to Monte Carlo simulations to determine the concentration range over which the spin dynamics are determined primarily by the Ho$^{3+}$-μ interaction rather than the F-μ interaction. Simulations show that F-μ-F oscillations should evolve into a Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe decay for an increasing static magnetic field distribution Γ (i.e., increasing x), but the data do not show this behavior, consistent with the recently reported existence of strong magnetic fluctuations in this system at low temperatures. Anisotropy in the field distribution is shown to cause small errors of order 10% from behavior predicted for an isotropic distribution. Finally, numerical calculations show that values of Γ calculated in the single ion limit greatly exceed the values extracted from curve fits, suggesting that strong correlations play an important role in this system.

Magnetic dipolar ordering and quantum phase transition in Fe8 molecular magnet

We show that a crystal of mesoscopic Fe8 single molecule magnets is an experimental realization of the Quantum Ising Phase Transition (QIPT) model in a transverse field, with dipolar interactions. Quantum annealing has enabled us to explore the QIPT at thermodynamical equilibrium. The phase diagram and critical exponents we obtain are compared to expectations for the mean-field QIPT Universality class.

Is room temperature ferromagnetism possible in K-doped SnO2?

Ab initio studies have theoretically predicted room temperature ferromagnetism in crystalline SnO2, ZrO2 and TiO2 doped with non magnetic element from the 1A column as K and Na. Our purpose is to address experimentally the possibility of magnetism in both Sn1-xKxO2 and Sn1-xCaxO2 compounds. The samples have been prepared using equilibrium methods of standard solid state route. Our study has shown that both Sn1-xCaxO2 and Sn1-xKxO2 structure is thermodynamically unstable and leads to a phase separation, as shown by X-ray diffraction and detailed micro-structural analyses with high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, the crystalline SnO2 grains are surrounded by K-based amorphous phase. In contrast to Ca: SnO2 samples we have obtained a magnetic phase in K: SnO2 ones, but no long range ferromagnetic order. The K: SnO2 samples exhibit a moments of the order of 0.2 μB/K /ion, in contrast to ab-initio calculations which predict 3μB, where K atoms are on the Sn crystallographic site. The apparent contradictions between our experiments and first principle studies are discussed.

Spin-Orbit Qubits of Rare-Earth-Metal Ions in Axially Symmetric Crystal Fields

Contrary to the well known spin qubits, rare-earth qubits are characterized by a strong influence of crystal field due to large spin-orbit coupling. At low temperature and in the presence of resonance microwaves, it is the magnetic moment of the crystal-field ground-state which nutates (for several $μ$s) and the Rabi frequency $Ω_R$ is anisotropic. Here, we present a study of the variations of $Ω_R(\vec{H}_{0})$ with the magnitude and direction of the static magnetic field $\vec{H_{0}}$ for the odd $^{167}$Er isotope in a single crystal CaWO$_4$:Er$^{3+}$. The hyperfine interactions split the $Ω_R(\vec{H}_{0})$ curve into eight different curves which are fitted numerically and described analytically. These "spin-orbit qubits" should allow detailed studies of decoherence mechanisms which become relevant at high temperature and open new ways for qubit addressing using properly oriented magnetic fields.

Cross-relaxation and phonon bottleneck effects on magnetization dynamics in LiYF4:Ho3+

Frequency and dc magnetic field dependences of dynamic susceptibility in diluted paramagnets LiYF$_4$:Ho$^{3+}$ have been measured at liquid helium temperatures in the ac and dc magnetic fields parallel to the symmetry axis of a tetragonal crystal lattice. Experimental data are analyzed in the framework of microscopic theory of relaxation rates in the manifold of 24 electron-nuclear sublevels of the lowest non-Kramers doublet and the first excited singlet in the Ho$^{3+}$ ground multiplet $^5I_8$ split by the crystal field of S$_4$ symmetry. The one-phonon transition probabilities were computed using electron-phonon coupling constants calculated in the framework of exchange charge model and were checked by optical piezospectroscopic measurements. The specific features observed in field dependences of the in- and out-of-phase susceptibilities (humps and dips, respectively) at the crossings (anti-crossings) of the electron-nuclear sublevels are well reproduced by simulations when the phonon bottleneck effect and the cross-spin relaxation are taken into account.

19F nuclear spin relaxation and spin diffusion effects in the single ion magnet LiYF4:Ho3+

Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the 19F nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in a single crystal of LiYF4 doped with holmium are described by an approach based on a detailed consideration of the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between nuclei and impurity paramagnetic ions and nuclear spin diffusion processes. The observed non-exponential long time recovery of the nuclear magnetization after saturation at intermediate temperatures is in agreement with predictions of the spin-diffusion theory in a case of the diffusion limited relaxation. At avoided level crossings in the spectrum of electron-nuclear states of the Ho3+ ion, rates of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation increase due to quasi-resonant energy exchange between nuclei and paramagnetic ions, in contrast to the predominant role played by electronic cross-relaxation processes in the low-frequency ac-susceptibility.
