High-Resolution Laser Spectroscopy on the Hyperfine Structure of $^{255}$Fm (Z=100)

We report on high-resolution laser spectroscopy of $^{255}$Fm ($T_{1/2} = 20$h), one of the heaviest nuclides available from reactor breeding. The hyperfine structures in two different atomic ground-state transitions at 398.4~nm and 398.2~nm were probed by in-source laser spectroscopy at the RISIKO mass separator in Mainz, using the PI-LIST high-resolution ion source. Experimental results were combined with hyperfine fields from various atomic ab-initio calculations, in particular using MultiConfigurational Dirac-Hartree-Fock theory, as implemented in GRASP18. In this manner, the nuclear magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments were derived to be $\mu = -0.75(5)~ \mu_\textrm{N}$ and $Q_\textrm{S} = +5.84(13)$~eb, respectively. The magnetic moment indicates occupation of the $\nu$~7/2[613] Nilsson orbital, while the large quadrupole moment confirms strong, stable prolate deformation consistent with systematics in the heavy actinides. Comparisons with available expectation values from nuclear theory show good agreement, providing a stringent benchmark for the used theoretical models. These results revise earlier data and establish $^{255}$Fm as a reference isotope for future high-resolution studies.

Ab initio nuclear shape coexistence and emergence of island of inversion around $N=20$

We extend a nuclear ab initio framework based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions to investigate shape coexistence and the degradation of the $N=20$ magic number in both even-even and odd-even magnesium isotopes. The quantum-number projected generator coordinate method, combined with the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG), is employed to compute their low-lying states. This approach reasonably reproduces the coexistence of weakly and strongly deformed states at comparable energies, and allows us to track the emergence of the $N=20$ island of inversion through the continuous IMSRG evolution of the chiral Hamiltonian. Our results indicate that the ground state of $^{33}$Mg with spin-parity $3/2^-$ is predominantly a strongly deformed configuration with $K^\pi = 3/2^-$, while the lowest $7/2^-$ state is predicted to be a shape isomer, consisting of a mixture of weakly deformed configurations with different $K$ values. The results highlight the essential roles of both dynamical and static collective correlations in reproducing the ordering of nuclear states with distinct shapes.

Mean-field approximation on steroids: exact description of the deuteron

The present article demonstrates that the deuteron, i.e. the lightest bound nuclear system made of a single proton and a single neutron, can be accurately described within a mean-field-based framework. Although paradoxical at first glance, the deuteron ground-state binding energy, magnetic dipole moment, electric quadrupole moment and root-mean-square proton radius are indeed reproduced with sub-percent accuracy via a low-dimensional linear combination of non-orthogonal Bogoliubov states, i.e. with a method whose numerical cost scales as $n_{\text{dim}}^4$, where $n_{\text{dim}}$ is the dimension of the basis of the one-body Hilbert space. By further putting the system into a harmonic trap, the neutron-proton scattering length and effective range in the ${}^{3}S_1$ channel are also accurately reproduced. To achieve this task, (i) the inclusion of proton-neutron pairing through the mixing of proton and neutron single-particle states in the Bogoliubov transformation and (ii) the restoration of proton and neutron numbers before variation are shown to be mandatory ingredients. This unexpected result has implications regarding the most efficient way to capture necessary correlations as a function of nuclear mass and regarding the possibility to ensure order-by-order renormalizability of many-body calculations based on chiral or pionless effective field theories beyond light nuclei. In this context, the present study will be extended to $^{3}$H and $^{3,4}$He in the near future as well as to the leading order of pionless effective field theory.

Ab initio uncertainty quantification of neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{76}$Ge

The observation of neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay would offer proof of lepton number violation, demonstrating that neutrinos are Majorana particles, while also helping us understand why there is more matter than antimatter in the Universe. If the decay is driven by the exchange of the three known light neutrinos, a discovery would, in addition, link the observed decay rate to the neutrino mass scale through a theoretical quantity known as the nuclear matrix element (NME). Accurate values of the NMEs for all nuclei considered for use in $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiments are therefore crucial for designing and interpreting those experiments. Here, we report the first comprehensive ab initio uncertainty quantification of the $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay NME, in the key nucleus $^{76}$Ge. Our method employs nuclear strong and weak interactions derived within chiral effective field theory and recently developed many-body emulators. Our result, with a conservative treatment of uncertainty, is an NME of $2.60^{+1.28}_{-1.36}$, which, together with the best-existing half-life sensitivity and phase-space factor, sets an upper limit for effective neutrino mass of $187^{+205}_{-62}$ meV. The result is important for designing next-generation germanium detectors aiming to cover the entire inverted hierarchy region of neutrino masses.

Application of efficient generator-coordinate subspace-selection algorithm to neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay

The generator coordinate method begins with the variational construction of a set of non-orthogonal mean-field states that span a subspace of the full many-body Hilbert space. These states are then often projected onto states with good quantum numbers to restore symmetries, leading to a set with members that can be similar to one another, and it is sometimes possible to reduce this set without greatly affecting results. Here we propose a greedy algorithm that we call the energy-transition-orthogonality procedure (ENTROP) to select subsets of important states. As applied here, the approach selects on the basis of diagonal energy, orthogonality, and contribution to the matrix element that governs neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay. We present both shell-model and preliminary ab initio calculations of this matrix element for the decay of $^{76}$Ge, with quadrupole deformation parameters and the isoscalar pairing strength as generator coordinates. ENTROP converges quickly, reducing significantly the number of basis states needed for an accurate calculation.

In-beam gamma-ray and electron spectroscopy of $^{249,251}$Md

The odd-$Z$ $^{251}$Md nucleus was studied using combined $γ$-ray and conversion-electron in-beam spectroscopy. Besides the previously observed rotational band based on the $[521]1/2^-$ configuration, another rotational structure has been identified using $γ$-$γ$ coincidences. The use of electron spectroscopy allowed the rotational bands to be observed over a larger rotational frequency range. Using the transition intensities that depend on the gyromagnetic factor, a $[514]7/2^-$ single-particle configuration has been inferred for this band, i.e., the ground-state band. A physical background that dominates the electron spectrum with an intensity of $\simeq$ 60% was well reproduced by simulating a set of unresolved excited bands. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the intensity profile as a function of the angular momentum provided a method for deriving the orbital gyromagnetic factor, namely $g_K = 0.69^{+0.19}_{-0.16}$ for the ground-state band. The odd-$Z$ $^{249}$Md was studied using $γ$-ray in-beam spectroscopy. Evidence for octupole correlations resulting from the mixing of the $Δl = Δj = 3$ $[521]3/2^-$ and $[633]7/2^+$ Nilsson orbitals were found in both $^{249,251}$Md. A surprising similarity of the $^{251}$Md ground-state band transition energies with those of the excited band of $^{255}$Lr has been discussed in terms of identical bands. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations were performed to investigate the origin of the similarities between these bands.

Zero-pairing limit of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov reference states

The variational Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) mean-field theory is the starting point of various (ab initio) many-body methods dedicated to superfluid systems. While taking the zero-pairing limit of HFB equations constitutes a text-book problem when the system is of closed-(sub)shell character, it is typically, although wrongly, thought to be ill-defined whenever the naive filling of single-particle levels corresponds to an open-shell system. The present work demonstrates that the zero-pairing limit of an HFB state is mathematically well-defined, independently of the closed- or open-shell character of the system in the limit. Still, the nature of the limit state strongly depends on the underlying shell structure and on the associated naive filling reached in the zero-pairing limit for the particle number A of interest. All the analytical findings are confirmed and illustrated numerically. While HFB theory has been intensively scrutinized formally and numerically over the last decades, it still uncovers unknown and somewhat unexpected features. From this general perspective, the present analysis demonstrates that HFB theory does not reduce to Hartree-Fock theory even when the pairing field is driven to zero in the HFB Hamiltonian matrix.

Ab Initio Treatment of Collective Correlations and the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of $^{48}$Ca

Working with Hamiltonians from chiral effective field theory, we develop a novel framework for describing arbitrary deformed medium-mass nuclei by combining the in-medium similarity renormalization group with the generator coordinate method. The approach leverages the ability of the first method to capture dynamic correlations and the second to include collective correlations without violating symmetries. We use our scheme to compute the matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca to $^{48}$Ti, and find it to have the value $0.61$, near or below the predictions of most phenomenological methods. The result opens the door to ab initio calculations of the matrix elements for the decay of heavier nuclei such as $^{76}$Ge, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe.

Variational approximations to exact solutions in shell-model valence spaces: calcium isotopes in the pf-shell

We study the performance of self-consistent mean-field and beyond-mean-field approximations in shell-model valence spaces. In particular, Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov, particle-number variation after projection and projected generator coordinate methods are applied to obtain ground-state and excitation energies for even-even and odd-even Calcium isotopes in the pf-shell. The standard (and non-trivial) KB3G nuclear effective interaction has been used. The comparison with the exact solutions -- provided by the full diagonalization of the Hamiltonian -- shows an outstanding agreement when particle-number and angular-momentum restorations are performed and both quadrupole and neutron-neutron pairing degrees of freedom are explicitly explored as collective coordinates.

On the norm overlap between many-body states. I. Uncorrelated overlap between arbitrary Bogoliubov product states

State-of-the-art multi-reference energy density functional calculations require the computation of norm overlaps between different Bogoliubov quasiparticle many-body states. It is only recently that the efficient and unambiguous calculation of such norm kernels has become available under the form of Pfaffians~[L. M. Robledo, Phys. Rev. C79, 021302 (2009)]. The goals of this work is (i) to propose and implement an alternative to the Pfaffian method to compute unambiguously the norm overlap between arbitrary Bogoliubov quasiparticle states and (ii) to extend the first point to explicitly correlated norm kernels at play in recently developped particle-number-restored Bogoliubov coupled-cluster (PNR-BCC) and particle-number-restored many-body perturbation (PNR-BMBPT) ab initio theories~[T. Duguet and A. Signoracci, J. Phys. G44, 015103 (2017)]. Point (i) constitutes the purpose of the present paper while point (ii) is addressed in a forthcoming companion paper. We generalize the method used in~[T. Duguet and A. Signoracci, J. Phys. G44, 015103 (2017)] to obtain the norm overlap between arbitrary Bogoliubov product states under a closed-form expression. The formula is physically intuitive, accurate, versatile and relies on elementary linear algebra operations. It equally applies to norm overlaps between Bogoliubov states of even or odd number parity. Numerical applications illustrate these features and provide a transparent representation of the content of the norm overlaps. Furthermore, the closed-form expression extends naturally to correlated overlaps at play in PNR-BCC and PNR-BMBPT. As such, the straight overlap between Bogoliubov states is the zeroth-order reduction of more involved norm kernels to be studied in the forthcoming paper.

Calculating the norm matrix to solve the A-body Schrödinger equation within a set of non-orthogonal many-body states

There are efficient many-body methods, such as the (symmetry-restored) generator coordinate method in nuclear physics, that formulate the A-body Schrödinger equation within a set of nonorthogonal many-body states. Solving the corresponding secular equation requires the evaluation of the norm matrix and thus the capacity to compute its entries consistently and without any phase ambiguity. This is not always a trivial task, e.g. it remained a long-standing problem for methods based on general Bogoliubov product states. While a solution to this problem was found recently in Ref. [L. M. Robledo, Phys. Rev. C79, 021302 (2009)], the present work introduces an alternative method that can be generically applied to other classes of states of interest in many-body physics. The method is presently exemplified in the case of Bogoliubov states and numerically illustrated on the basis of a toy model.

Beyond Mean-Field Calculations for Odd-A Nuclei

Beyond mean-field methods are very successful tools for the description of large-amplitude collective motion for even-even atomic nuclei. The state-of-the-art framework of these methods consists in a Generator Coordinate Method based on angular-momentum and particle-number projected triaxially deformed Hatree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) states. The extension of this scheme to odd-mass nuclei is a long-standing challenge. We present for the first time such an extension, where the Generator Coordinate space is built from self-consistently blocked one-quasiparticle HFB states. One of the key points for this success is that the same Skyrme interaction is used for the mean-field and the pairing channels, thus avoiding problems related to the violation of the Pauli principle. An application to 25Mg illustrates the power of our method, as agreement with experiment is obtained for the spectrum, electromagnetic moments, and transition strengths, for both positive and negative parity states and without the necessity for effective charges or effective moments. Although the effective interaction still requires improvement, our study opens the way to systematically describe odd-A nuclei throughout the nuclear chart.

Symmetry restoration for odd-mass nuclei with a Skyrme energy density functional

In these proceedings, we report first results for particle-number and angular-momentum projection of self-consistently blocked triaxial one-quasiparticle HFB states for the description of odd-A nuclei in the context of regularized multi-reference energy density functionals, using the entire model space of occupied single-particle states. The SIII parameterization of the Skyrme energy functional and a volume-type pairing interaction are used.

Shell evolution and nuclear forces

We present a quantitative study of the role played by different components characterizing the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the evolution of the nuclear shell structure. It is based on the spin-tensor decomposition of an effective two-body shell-model interaction and the subsequent study of effective single-particle energy variations in a series of isotopes or isotones. The technique allows to separate unambiguously contributions of the central, vector and tensor components of the realistic effective interaction. We show that while the global variation of the single-particle energies is due to the central component of the effective interaction, the characteristic behavior of spin-orbit partners, noticed recently, is mainly due to its tensor part. Based on the analysis of a well-fitted realistic interaction in sdpf-shell model space, we analyze in detail the role played by the different terms in the formation and/or disappearance of N=16, N=20 and N=28 shell gaps in neutron-rich nuclei.
