Funicular preorders can be prelinearized without nonprincipal ultrafilters over $\mathbb N$

It is a consequence of the axiom of choice that every preorder can be extended to a total preorder while respecting the strict preorder relation. We call such an extension a prelinearization of the preorder and study the extent to which the axiom of choice is needed to construct prelinearizations. We isolate the class of funicular preorders, and show that these have prelinearizations in models of $\mathsf{ZF+DC}$ containing no nonprincipal ultrafilters over $\omega$. Funicular preorders include coordinatewise domination on $\mathbb{R}^\omega$, Turing reducibility, and various preorders arising in social choice theory. The relevant models are constructed first using tools from the geometric set theory of Larson and Zapletal, which requires an inaccessible cardinal, and then the inaccessible cardinal is eliminated using methods of amalgamation for Cohen reals.

Partitions of $\mathbb{R}^3$ into unit circles with no well-ordering of the reals

Using a well-ordering on the reals, one can prove there exists a partition of the three-dimensional Euclidean space into unit circles (PUC). We show that the converse does not hold: there exist models of $\mathsf{ZF}$ without a well-ordering of the reals in which such partition exists. Specifically, we prove that the Cohen model has a PUC and construct a model satisfying $\mathsf{DC}$ where this is also the case. Furthermore, we present a general framework for constructing similar models for other paradoxical sets, under some conditions of extendability and amalgamation.

The transcendence degree of the reals over certain set-theoretical subfields

It is a well-known result that, after adding one Cohen real, the transcendence degree of the reals over the ground-model reals is continuum. We extend this result for a set $X$ of finitely many Cohen reals, by showing that, in the forcing extension, the transcendence degree of the reals over a combination of the reals in the extension given by each proper subset of $X$ is also maximal. This answers a question of Kanovei and Schindler.
