Sullivant-Talaska ideal of the cyclic Gaussian Graphical Model

In this paper, we settle a conjecture due to Sturmfels and Uhler concerning generation of the prime ideal of the variety associated to the Gaussian graphical model of any cycle graph. Our methods are general and applicable to a large class of ideals with radical initial ideals.

Polynomial systems admitting a simultaneous solution

We provide a complete description of the ideal that serves as the resultant ideal for n univariate polynomials of degree d. We in particular describe a set of generators of this resultant ideal arising as maximal minors of a set of cascading matrices formed from the coefficients of the polynomials, generalising the classical Sylvester resultant of two polynomials.

Characteristic numbers and chromatic polynomial of a tensor

We introduce the characteristic numbers and the chromatic polynomial of a tensor. Our approach generalizes and unifies the chromatic polynomial of a graph and of a matroid, characteristic numbers of quadrics in Schubert calculus, Betti numbers of complements of hyperplane arrangements and Euler characteristic of complements of determinantal hypersurfaces and the maximum likelihood degree for general linear concentration models in algebraic statistics.

Bad and good news for Strassen's laser method: Border rank of the 3x3 permanent and strict submultiplicativity

We determine the border ranks of tensors that could potentially advance the known upper bound for the exponent $\omega$ of matrix multiplication. The Kronecker square of the small $q=2$ Coppersmith-Winograd tensor equals the $3\times 3$ permanent, and could potentially be used to show $\omega=2$. We prove the negative result for complexity theory that its border rank is $16$, resolving a longstanding problem. Regarding its $q=4$ skew cousin in $ C^5\otimes C^5\otimes C^5$, which could potentially be used to prove $\omega\leq 2.11$, we show the border rank of its Kronecker square is at most $42$, a remarkable sub-multiplicativity result, as the square of its border rank is $64$. We also determine moduli spaces $\underline{VSP}$ for the small Coppersmith-Winograd tensors.

New lower bounds for matrix multiplication and the 3x3 determinant

Let $M_{\langle u,v,w\rangle}\in C^{uv}\otimes C^{vw}\otimes C^{wu}$ denote the matrix multiplication tensor (and write $M_n=M_{\langle n,n,n\rangle}$) and let $det_3\in ( C^9)^{\otimes 3}$ denote the determinant polynomial considered as a tensor. For a tensor $T$, let $\underline R(T)$ denote its border rank. We (i) give the first hand-checkable algebraic proof that $\underline R(M_2)=7$,(ii) prove $\underline R(M_{\langle 223\rangle})=10$, and $\underline R(M_{\langle 233\rangle})=14$, where previously the only nontrivial matrix multiplication tensor whose border rank had been determined was $M_2$,(iii) prove $\underline R( M_3)\geq 17$, (iv) prove $\underline R( det_3)=17$, improving the previous lower bound of $12$, (v) prove $\underline R(M_{\langle 2nn\rangle})\geq n^2+1.32n$ for all $n\geq 25$ (previously only $\underline R(M_{\langle 2nn\rangle})\geq n^2+1$ was known) as well as lower bounds for $4\leq n\leq 25$, and (vi) prove $\underline R(M_{\langle 3nn\rangle})\geq n^2+2 n+1$ for all $ n\geq 21$, where previously only $\underline R(M_{\langle 3nn\rangle})\geq n^2+2$ was known, as well as lower boundsfor $4\leq n\leq 21$. Our results utilize a new technique initiated by Buczy\'{n}ska and Buczy\'{n}ski, called border apolarity. The two key ingredients are: (i) the use of a multi-graded ideal associated to a border rank $r$ decomposition of any tensor, and (ii) the exploitation of the large symmetry group of $T$ to restrict to $B_T$-invariant ideals, where $B_T$ is a maximal solvable subgroup of the symmetry group of $T$.

Tensors with maximal symmetries

We classify tensors with maximal and next to maximal dimensional symmetry groups under a natural genericity assumption (1-genericity), in dimensions greater than 7. In other words, we classify minimal dimensional orbits in the space of (m,m,m) tensors assuming 1-genericity. Our study uncovers new tensors with striking geometry. This paper was motivated by Strassen's laser method for bounding the exponent of matrix multiplication. The best known tensor for the laser method is the large Coppersmith-Winograd tensor, and our study began with the observation that it has a large symmetry group, of dimension m^2/2 +m/2. We show that in odd dimensions, this is the largest possible for a 1-generic tensor, but in even dimensions we exhibit a tensor with a larger dimensional symmetry group. In the course of the proof, we classify nondegenerate bilinear forms with large dimensional stabilizers, which may be of interest in its own right.

Rank and border rank of Kronecker powers of tensors and Strassen's laser method

We prove that the border rank of the Kronecker square of the little Coppersmith-Winograd tensor $T_{cw,q}$ is the square of its border rank for $q > 2$ and that the border rank of its Kronecker cube is the cube of its border rank for $q > 4$. This answers questions raised implicitly in [Coppersmith-Winograd, 1990] and explicitly in [Bl\"aser, 2013] and rules out the possibility of proving new upper bounds on the exponent of matrix multiplication using the square or cube of a little Coppersmith-Winograd tensor in this range. In the positive direction, we enlarge the list of explicit tensors potentially useful for Strassen's laser method, introducing a skew-symmetric version of the Coppersmith-Winograd tensor, $T_{skewcw,q}$. For $q = 2$, the Kronecker square of this tensor coincides with the $3\times 3$ determinant polynomial, $\det_3 \in \mathbb{C}^9\otimes \mathbb{C}^9\otimes \mathbb{C}^9$, regarded as a tensor. We show that this tensor could potentially be used to show that the exponent of matrix multiplication is two. We determine new upper bounds for the (Waring) rank and the (Waring) border rank of $\det_3$, exhibiting a strict submultiplicative behaviour for $T_{skewcw,2}$ which is promising for the laser method. We establish general results regarding border ranks of Kronecker powers of tensors, and make a detailed study of Kronecker squares of tensors in $\mathbb{C}^3\otimes \mathbb{C}^3\otimes \mathbb{C}^3$.

Towards a Geometric Approach to Strassen's Asymptotic Rank Conjecture

We make a first geometric study of three varieties in $\mathbb{C}^m \otimes \mathbb{C}^m \otimes \mathbb{C}^m$ (for each $m$), including the Zariski closure of the set of tight tensors, the tensors with continuous regular symmetry. Our motivation is to develop a geometric framework for Strassen's Asymptotic Rank Conjecture that the asymptotic rank of any tight tensor is minimal. In particular, we determine the dimension of the set of tight tensors. We prove that this dimension equals the dimension of the set of oblique tensors, a less restrictive class introduced by Strassen.

A rank 18 Waring decomposition of $sM_{\langle 3\rangle}$ with 432 symmetries

The recent discovery that the exponent of matrix multiplication is determined by the rank of the symmetrized matrix multiplication tensor has invigorated interest in better understanding symmetrized matrix multiplication. I present an explicit rank 18 Waring decomposition of $sM_{\langle 3\rangle}$ and describe its symmetry group.
